LATE PICK 4 …
LEG 1: (Race 8: Turf, 1 3/8ths, Man o’ War S. (G1), $700k, 4+)
As we welcome another Belmont Saturday, it is time to get after the Late Pick 4 ticket together! I have an affordable play that is worth a look ... With 3 of the 4 races being “stakes” quality, that makes for some fun ‘capping. This opening leg brings together 6 distance turfers, but let’s make no bones about it … this is a contest between Christophe Clement’s Gufo #2 and Charlie Appleby’s Yibir (GB) #3. Of these, I am all-in on backing Appleby’s classy son of Dubawi (IRE). The Godolphin homebred might have missed in his 2 starts this year, but those were very tough international affairs in Dubai (UAE), and at Newmarket (GB). I know Clement’s son of Declaration of War is going to be tough to handle, but my sense is that he cannot match the late turn-of-foot of the Appleby ace. William Buick makes the trip over, and he is going to have quite a 24hrs … he will be hopping a flight to France to ride Modern Games the next day. This is the perfect spot to “Single,” which will assist us as this sequence begins to take shape.
Selections: 3 (Single)
LEG 2: (Race 9: Dirt, 1 1/8th, Peter Pan S. (G3), $200k, 3)
This year’s edition of the “Pan” is a challenging race to handicap, but I am zeroed in on yet another “Single.” I know Todd Pletcher’s Complete Agenda #3 has potential, and Rudy Brisset has an uncoupled entry that could surprise … However, for my money, I want to support Chad Brown’s Electability #2. The Klaravich colt is coming into Belmont on a 2-race win streak, and he is looking for more. He has shown the ability to go a mile, and I don’t see why he couldn’t get this distance. The rider switch to Irad Ortiz only strengthens the case, as does Brown’s proclivity to score in races like these at NYRA. When this pair team-up, they can roll over almost anyone. Looking over the back half of the LP4, I am going to need to go deeper … I already know that … So, I am somewhat relieved that I have such a strong set of opinions in these 2 races. Let’s move right along, trusting that the son of Quality Road can get the job done. Belmont Stakes bound, if he passes this test? Hmm …
Selections: 2 (Single)
LEG 3: (Race 10: Turf, 1 1/16th, Beaugay S. (G3), $150k, F&M 4+)
It would be pretty simple to just pick one of Chad Brown’s latest acquisitions, and be done with it. Yep, another “Single.” However, I am not so sure that Rougir (FR) #1 is a lock to win the Grade 3 Beaugay S. The 4-yr-old filly by Territories (IRE) sold for a whopping $3.3 million last year to Peter Brant and Michael Tabor … a couple of titans when it comes to Thoroughbred ownership. Even though their new acquisition was 7th in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1), he was coming off a major victory in the Prix de l’Opera (G1) at Longchamp (FR) in early October. With Flavien Prat in the irons, she is going to be tough to tackle. I think I can beat her with either Chad Brown’s own layoff runner in Lemista (IRE) #2, or Jorge Abreu’s long shot, Runaway Rumour #5. The former is totally logical because she was in this exact spot last year, as she made her North American debut for her trainer. Since then, she has only raced a couple of other times (Saratoga/Arlington). The services of Irad Ortiz are a check to Prat’s ability, and she has the potential to exhibit some nice turn-of-foot, late in the game. I want to include Abreu’s runner because of all the entries; this daughter of Flintshire (GB) (a sire who you would think would have a strong turf record, but does not) has the best record at Belmont on the turf. She clearly takes to the grass, and even though her record is sorely lacking, she has some nice class lines that deserve some respect. You never know what kind of magic Jose Lezcano can wield in situations like this … and the price is going to be boxcar-esque. My 2 picks should give us the chance to take home this particular leg, and afford us the ability to go deeper in the nightcap. Wait till you see that race!
Selections: 2/5 (2-Deep)
LEG 4: (Race 11: Turf, 7F, ALLW80n1x, F&M 3+, NY Breds)
Before John’s sign-off, we have a tough sprint-route on the always-challenging Widener Turf Course … not for the faint of heart, folks! When it comes to a top selection, I am pretty interested in the exploits of Tony Dutrow’s Palace Gossip #9. This filly by Palace Malice ran nicely at Aqueduct once they removed the turf blankets from the grass course. She was always in that ALLW race, but just did not have enough in the end to close it out. Eric Cancel knows what this one can do, and she has the tactical ability to either get to the lead or find a spot 2-3 off-the-pace for a ground-saving trip. Let’s use this one, but I also like the ability of Christophe Clement’s Autumn Glory #11, Mike Trombetta’s Dufresne #7, George Weaver’s Finest Work #6, and Mike Maker’s Rigby #4 … each of these is either on-the-make from MSW Co., or is looking to drop out of a more pressure-packed race. I think any one of these runners could win, and that makes me confident that we are covered. Let’s go get this ticket cashed …

Pimlico Picks: Saturday racing a week before Preakness on May 14

Pimlico Race Course Picks - Saturday, May 14, 2022

Race 2: 2-4-3-6
Race 3: 2-5-7-4
Race 4: 7-2-6-3
Race 5: 3-9-6-10
Race 6: 6-1-4-9
Race 7: 2-4-1-5
Race 8: 6-2-3-5
Race 9: 6-3-2-5
**Most Likely: Summer Beauty #4 (Race 1)**
**Best Value: Trikki Nikki #3 (Race 5)**
Most Likely Winner: (Race 1: Summer Beauty #4, 9/2):
We have already had a strong record on the opening race of each PIM card, so hopefully we can keep that going. I found a nice shot in this filly by Carpe Diem for trainer Sarah Nagle. The last time this one hit the track, it was an off-the-turf affair at Gulfstream Park against similar company. This race will be an easy spot, and jockey Jevian Toledo already has a good Meet going. Looks like we might have another winner on our hands at odds of 9/2!
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4
Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Trikki Nikki #3, 8/1):
Here is a mare by Lemon Drop Kid that I suspect is going to be sharp off-the-bench. I think as a 4-yr-old she got tired, and lost interest throughout her summer campaign. If you look at her earlier races, when she was fresh at Penn and then at Pimlico, she turned in some nice performances. Back at it, she is going to be more than a square price on the grass, as Angel Cruz takes the mount.
Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)
Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Turf, 5F, OC50kb, F&M 3+):
Even though the Pimlico Meet does not last long, one of its hallmarks continues to be the 5-furlong turf races … With competitive fields, you can find some nice ones in races just like this one. Of course, it is evident that Brittany Russell’s Adelaide Miss #2 and Mike Trombetta’s Spun Glass #3 are the classiest draws in here. Either has the ability to win going this distance, but I would give preference to the former. Russell is a premier trainer, and one of these days she is going to gain national attention of the “graded” variety. This filly by Vancouver (AUS) is coming off a campaign down at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, and the cutback in distance (compared to what she is used to running) might do the trick. She knows the PIM grass course, and I think if you could get odds somewhere around 3/1, then that qualifies as an overlay. One other runner that I would like to use is Tim Keefe’s Dendrobia #6. This seasoned mare by Denman (AUS) is dropping down after running over at Laurel in the King Leatherbury $100k. This one is classy, and she hasn’t taken a on OC Co. as low as this since 2020. Forest Boyce can get some winners home, so the order of the day is … tote watch. If she ends up the 3rd or even 4th choice, then she is without a doubt the best price on the board. Here is the bet …
Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 2/3/6

Rocket Picks : Churchill Downs, Santa Anita, and Belmont Park for May 14, 2022
By: Jared Welch
It’s time for another weekend of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Belmont Park for the late sequence on the card. We will also have full card selections for Santa Anita and Churchill Downs for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s go!
Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Belmont Park:
Belmont Park May 14, 2022
Race 8: Man o War Stakes (G1)
#3 Yibir returns to the United States today after back to back runner up efforts against tougher international runners. Last year he one twice here, including the Breeders Cup Turf (G1). #2 Gufo is one of our best turf horses; however, he must improve to beat Yibir.
Race 9: Peter Pan Stakes (G3)
freestar
#2 Electability has won two straight races at Aqueduct, which has him ready to take on tougher company in this spot. #5 Golden Glider will be taking a drop down in class for this race after a decent fourth place effort against solid horse in the Blue Grass Stakes (G2).
Race 10: Beaugay Stakes (G3)
#1 Rougir is now in the Chad Brown barn, with Flavien Prat aboard, which reminds you a lot of Speak of the Devil one week ago. Look for this filly to run a big race. #2 Lemista is the other Chad Brown horse in the race with a chance. Her best effort will make her competitive.
Race 11: Allowance
#2 Act of Congress was a five length winner on debut last time out and should fit in well with this group today. #3 Masterof the Tunes has the experience edge over most of this group, while she makes her second start off of the layoff in this spot.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4-$50,000 Guaranteed Pool
May 14, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a 13-race card scheduled featuring Open pacers and Graduate Series action. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 begins in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 6
1-Hail Christian N (7/2)-Raced well in last and was caught late. Comes back versus the same kind and moves in a few slots. TMac should have the 8-year-old forwardly placed.
2-Leon David (4-1)-Similar to #1 coming out of the same race but was used from the 7-hole to drop into the pocket and ended up cashing a 3rd place check. His 3-race win streak was snapped in last, but it wasn't a bad effort. Will respect this winner of 5 races in 18 M1 starts.
6-Bettors Donttell (3-1)-Burke trainee was facing tough foes in the last 2 starts and should be a main threat versus this group. Tried Lasix for the 1st time and Gingras should have the pedal down early and could be in control from gate to wire.
Race 7
1-Mayhem Hanover (9/2)-The 0-12 record at the Big M is cause for pause but comes off a nice try when dropped to this level. Dunn sticks and this post draw could help.
2-Heza Real Diamond (5-1)-Took advantage of a sharp steer and beat easier last week, now Callahan will be in the bike. Steps-up, should compete and have no problem racing near the top of the stack.
4-Motive Hanover (3-1)-Jen B entry has missed a start and has been facing high priced claimers from outside posts in the last 2 tries. Should be able to get a good early seat and could be sitting on a big effort.
5-De Los Cielos Deo (7/2)-Has been in the mix versus better and should be in the hunt here. Gingras could get on the engine and this time he won't be caught down the lane.
Race 8
1-Bella Bellini (9/5)-Comes off a sharp effort last week and trotted the back half in 54.4 with a .26 last quarter. Looks primed for the 1st win of 2022 in the 2nd start off the bench.
Race 9
1-Mikala (5/2)-Has a perfect 2 for 2 record this season and both were convincing wins. This mare should be in control from the word "go" and not look back.
0.50 Early Pick 4
1,2,6/1,2,4,5/1/1

Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Workout Commentary - 5-14-22
May 14, 2022
“What You Need to Know” - Santa Anita
By Jeff Siegel, 1stbet.com Handicapper & Analyst
Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TOC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
*
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100-point takeout.
The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.
Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 3-Hudson Ridge; 6-There Goes Harvard; 1-Sword Zorro
Forecast: Let’s go for a bit of gamble with Hudson Ridge (TOC=8-1; ML=6-1) in this second-level allowance turf miler that came up quite competitive. A stakes winner as a 3-year-old over the local lawn, the son of American Pharoah has been unplaced in his last five starts but continues to train well while stretching out again, removing blinkers, and switching to J. Hernandez. He’s 6-1 on the morning line and is better than that off his best effort, so in a race that projects to have soft early splits the S. McCarthy-trained colt should draft into an ideal stalking position and have every chance from there. There Goes Harvard (TOC=2-1; ML=4-1) earned a huge number when dead-heating in a victory against a softer group on the main track last month. He is just as good if not better on grass, and projects to settle in the second flight outside with dead aim on the leaders every step of the way. Sword Zorro (TOC=6-1; ML=7/2) launches a comeback for J. Sadler (superior stats with layoff runners) and won the Singletary S. over this course and distance last year. His recent workouts indicate fitness, so with some pace up front the Irish-bred colt should be heard from late.
Notable Workouts:
Sword Zorro (May 6, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01h TT). Grade: B
Mild coaxing throughout in solid solo training track work on the comeback trail for Sadler, splits of :24.4, :36.2 and 1:00.4 on our watches. Coming back well at least as well as he left, was a stakes winner over the local lawn last year; still has second-level allowance conditions.
View Workout Video
Vantastic (May 8, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.2h TT). Grade: B+
Looked sharp and eager in solo training track drill for P. Eurton, final three furlongs in :11.4 and :35 flat (may have gone faster than given). Can sprint or route when he’s on his game.
View Workout Video
Hudson Ridge (May 8, Santa Anita, 5f, :59.4h TT). Grade: B
Very light coaxing late in solo training track drill for S. McCarthy, strong throughout with splits of :23.4, :35.4, and :59.4, plenty left late. Seems perked up for an improved try based on this drill.
View Workout Video
Moody Jim (May 4, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.4h). Grade: B-
Mild urging through the lane in solo training track drill for J. Mullins, splits of :24.3, :36.3 and 1:01 flat on our watches, okay work, nothing scintillating. May not be quite as sharp now as he’s been in the past.

RACE 2: Post: 1:35 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 2-Royal Halo; 1-Knockout Guy
Forecast: Royal Halo may not be as quick as his :34 3/5 gate drill shows – he was asked pretty hard and went a few ticks slower than given while second best of a team – but in a maiden state-bred sprint for juveniles that came up weaker than normal the son of Curlin to Mischief probably deserves top billing by default. The barn generally does well with its young stock, so we’ll put this homebred colt on top while also including Knockout Guy, a debuting son of Ministers Wild Cat with a reasonable series of workouts on his resume. He might be able to run some but will need to leave cleanly from the rail. Tread lightly here.
Notable Workouts:
Royal Halo (May 11, Santa Anita, 3f, :34.3hg). Grade: B-
Ridden aggressively every step of the way while second best with Helladic (5f, 1:01.1hg) for L. Mendez, a couple of lengths behind workmate went eased up after three furlongs and going slower than given on our watches, :23.2 and :35 flat. Has bit of run but not as good as inflated final time might lead one to believe, though he’s likely good enough to act with soft maiden Cal-bred juveniles in upcoming debut.
View Workout Video
Good N Thirsty (May 7, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4h). Grade: C+
Asked and ridden in the final furlong in solo five furlong drill for Solis, splits of :36.2 and 1:02.1 on our watches, a couple of ticks slower and not visually impressive. From cold barn, probably would prefer to see one first.

RACE 3: Post: 2:09 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 4-Aventapp; 1-Stressed; 5-Girl Ranger
Forecast: Aventapp (TOC=9/5; ML=5-1) wired a maiden $50,000 field in a confidence-building score over this course and distance last month and appears well-spotted for a possible repeat in this starter’s allowance sprint for fillies and mares. The main concern is that she will have to contend with a quicker early pace today, especially if Stressed is gunned from the rail. Stressed (TOC=5-1; ML=4-1) returns to the claiming ranks for the first time since beating a maiden $80,000 field more than a year ago on dirt. This will be her second outing following a layoff, and the daughter of Goldencents seems likely to produce a forward move. Girl Ranger is turning back from a couple of route tries and might be a late threat if patiently ridden. In a race that we’ll otherwise pass, all three should be included in rolling exotic play.
Notable Workouts:
Girl Ranger (May 7, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.4h). Grade: C+
Mild urging through the lane while inside Cinnamon Cat (same time) while working from three furlong pole to the seven furlong pole, splits of :11.4, :36.2 and :49 flat on our watches. Nothing special on dirt, probably prefers the lawn.

RACE 4: Post: 2:43 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference: 1-Golf Drama; 4-Fordy G; 5-Thirsty John
Forecast: Here’s a split of the second race, a maiden juvenile abbreviated sprint. This looks like the tougher division. Golf Drama recorded a three furlong gate drill in :36 2/5 earlier this month (see below) but actually went considerably faster than given and looked good doing it. The son of Smiling Tiger is bred to win early, so if he breaks cleanly from the rail the J. Bonde-trained colt should have a big say in the matter. Fordy G. has a series of fast gate works on his resume and clearly has been cranked up for a major effort first time out. He’s a homebred son of American Freedom that seems certain to receive plenty of play on the tote. Thirsty John probably is a down the road type but he can run a bit, might be closing well, and is worth tossing in on a ticket or two for protection.
Notable Workouts:
Golf Drama (May 1, Santa Anita, 3f, :36.3hg). Grade: B+
Was a tad slow leaving the gate but then displayed excellent speed while besting Lucy L (4f, :48.4hg) for J. Bonde while going several ticks quicker than given, splits of :23.4 and :35 flat without undue pressure. Son of Smiling Tiger appears to have “win early” ability and should be a live item first crack out of the box when facing juvenile state-bred runners.
View Workout Video
Smokin Amelia (May 11, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.3h). Grade: B-
In blinkers, under a nice hold throughout inside Cocktail Princess (same time), final three furlongs in :12 flat and :37.1. No world beater but probably has a bit of improvement in her.
View Workout Video
Midnight Lightning (April 17, Santa Anita, 4f, :50h). Grade: B-
Clearly best over Golden Again (4f, :50h) in easy breeze for S. Knapp, splits of :12.2, :24.1 and :49.4, never asked. Getting fit, was run up to $130,000 at auction last year and may have some ability.
View Workout Video
Fordy G (April 28, Santa Anita, 4f, :46.2hg). Grade: B
Urged most of the way while second best with older Honor It (5f, :59.4hg) and well ahead of Reign of Speed (4f, :48.2hg) for Hanson, splits of :23 flat, :34.2 and :46.4, excellent speed for a juvenile. Have to think he’ll be live at first asking in an abbreviated dash.
View Workout Video
Thirsty John (April 24, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.3h). Grade: B-
A bit awkward changing leads but did okay in solo main track drill for Solis, final three furlongs in :11.4 and :36.3. Was run up to $97,000 at auction last year; strikes us as a colt that probably will do his best when the distances increase. Has some ability.

RACE 5: Post: 3:16 PT Grade: X
Single: 1-Queen Goddess
Forecast: Queen Goddess (TOC=3/5; ML=6/5) will be trying this marathon trip for the first time but based on pedigree (Empire Maker x Lemon Drop Kid) the M. McCarthy-trained filly should have no trouble handling the 12-furlong distance, especially in her projected role as the controlling speed. A recent victory over 10 furlongs in the Santa Ana S.-G3 with Neige Blanche behind her was visually pleasing, and as the winner of the American Oaks-G1 on dirt in December in gate to wire fashion she certainly knows how to take advantage of a front-running trip. At 6/5 on the morning line, she’s a rolling exotic single.
Notable Workouts:
Queen Goddess (May 7, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.4h). Grade: B
Ridden some through the lane and responded well enough, final half mile in :24 flat and :48.2 while holding her edge. Tough at any surface but might be most comfortable on turf, next stop Santa Barbara S.

RACE 6: Post: 3:49 PT Grade: B-
Use (in order of preference): 2-Your Ringer; 6-Poet Laureate
Forecast: Your Ringer was claimed for $50,000 last summer in her debut at Del Mar (she was beaten a nose while more than three lengths clear of the rest) but had to be stopped on soon after. She returns in a plausible spot for trainer J. Sadler (strong stats with layoff runners) and shows a series of workouts over the very fast Los Alamitos main track that should have her fit enough. Poet Laureate is a first-timer from the T. Yakteen barn with a solid foundation of workouts, including a gate drill (see below) that was good enough to make her a threat in this league. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with a slight preference on top to Your Ringer.
Notable Workouts:
Poet Laureate (April 24, Santa Anita, 4f, :48hg). Grade: B-
Okay work for a maiden claiming type, splits of :24 flat, :35.4 and :48 flat while even but a tad the best inside Lucy L (same time) for Yakteen, ridden some early but under no real pressure late. Seems fairly fit, should be competitive with moderate fillies and mares.

RACE 7: Post: 4:19 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 7-Suite Madam Blue; 5-Harper’s Gallop; 6-Storming Lady; 2-Respectfully
Forecast: This grass grab bag for starter allowance fillies and mares requires a considerable spread in rolling exotic play. We’ll go four-deep but if you feel the need to include a few more, go right ahead. Suite Madam Blue (TOC=2-1; ML=3-1) looked pretty nice beating a starter $25,000 field over this turf course last time out, employing a good pace-stalking strategy and then coming away late to win with a career top speed figure. If she can turn in two alike, she can win again. Harper’s Gallop (TOC=3-1; ML=, away since November but coming from the L. Powell barn (strong stats from a limited sample with this angle), might prefer more distance and in fact might be prepping for a stretch-out, but her grass form is solid and she is reunited with “win rider” J. Hernandez. Storming Lady (TOC=5-1; ML=4-1) is another that likely will be doing her best work from off the pace. This extended sprint trip seems ideal for her. Respectfully (TOC=6-1; ML=6-1) has a prior win over this course and distance and comes off a clever score in a state-bred allowance race on the main track. She is slower on numbers than the other main contenders but is still worth including as a back-up or a saver.
__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 8: Post: 4:50 PT Grade: B+
Use (in order of preference): 2-One More Bid; 6-Go Joe Won
Forecast: One More Bid projects as the controlling speed if he wants to be in this maiden mile affair that attracted a modest field of just six runners. The R. Hanson-trained gelding exits a pair of much tougher events, shows strong workouts since raced, and really shouldn’t miss this chance at 2-1 on the morning line. Go Joe Won displayed improvement when second over this track and distance in his second career outing last month and is worth using as a back-up or a saver, with the main punch going to One More Bid.
Notable Workouts:
Palagio (May 8, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.4h). Grade: C+
Never really asked but didn’t do a whole lot in solo main track drill, final half mile in :24.3 and :51.1. Perhaps a lazy type and certainly isn’t very inspiring in the a.m. Have to think he can improve some with experience and distance.
View Workout Video
Lord Sheldon (May 9, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4h). Grade: C+
Plodding type went off slowly and then was urged through the lane without much pick-up, splits of :12.4, :25 flat, :36.4 and 1:02 flat on our watches. Down the road type.

RACE 9: Post: 5:21 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 9-Rose’s Crystal; 1-Virulante; 4-With This Vow
Forecast: The nightcap is a difficult starter’s allowance turf miler for fillies and mares. We’ll go three deep but not with a great deal of confidence. Rose’s Crystal (TOC=9/2; ML=4-1) adds blinkers for the first time, and with enough pace up front to compliment her style she may be able to produce a winning late kick, though she’s generally prefers to just nibble. But on pure numbers, she’s capable of winning this race. Virulente (TOC=7/2; ML=6-1) earned a confidence building win in an optional $50,000 claimer at this trip over the local lawn last month, though the number came up a tad weak. The French-bred filly has a good stalking style and plenty of room for improvement, and from her favorable rail draw the P. D’Amato-trained import is guaranteed a ground-saving trip. Win This Vow (TOC=5/2; ML=5-1) wired the field over this course and distance in a slightly softer starter’s event and similar tactics most likely will be tried today. She’s clearly in good form but will need to produce a forward move to win at this level.

Race of the Week: Santa Barbara at Santa Anita | Saturday, May 14
May 11, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk
The Lead:
Turf marathon fillies and mares take center stage Saturday at Santa Anita for the Santa Barbara. The mile and one-half test could have its first repeat champ since Astra and Megahertz dominated this race from 2001-2005. NEIGE BLANCHE won a nose thriller here a year ago, and will be part of the six-pack of challengers that compete in Race 5 on the card.
Field Depth:
QUEEN GODDESS is a Grade 1 winner and has the signature score of this lineup. NEIGE BLANCHE is Grade 1-placed and a multiple Grade 3 winner. The remaining quartet will be tested strongly for class.
Pace:
COVER VERSION has dabbled in sprints and miles and could be sent to the front of what appears to be a very modest early pace. QUEEN GODDESS also could set the tempo from the rail or sit likely no worse than second. NEIGE BLANCHE is a pace wildcard, having won the Red Carpet wire-to-wire, last year's Santa Barbara from a stalking third and a Del Mar stakes from 6 lengths off the pace. Expect NEIGE BLANCHE's rider Juan Hernandez to put QUEEN GODDESS in his crosshairs and not let her get away from them.
Our Eyes:
QUEEN GODDESS out-kicked NEIGE BLANCHE last time out in the mile and one-quarter Santa Ana. Both carried equal weights that day and do once again. The distance becomes the big variable to the equation as NEIGE BLANCE is 2-2 at the 12-furlong journey and QUEEN GODDESS has yet to try it. With Belmont Stakes winners as the sire and damsire, there's no reason to think QUEEN GODDESS won't handle it. And as a 4-year-old, you'd assume there's more upside with QUEEN GODDESS and turn of foot vs. the 5-year-old NEIGE BLANCHE. They should have the run of this race and the lean goes to QUEEN GODDESS to repeat her recent victory over NEIGE BLANCHE, and not the latter's title defense.
NEW HEAT is a 3-time course winner who has a deep-closing style that likely won't be flattered by this race shape. QUEEN OFTHE TEMPLE exits a fifth-start maiden breaker and is devoid of any early foot. CARPE VINEM was 37-1 when beaten 7 lengths by the favored pair here in the Santa Ana. COVER VERSION is only 1-11 at Santa Anita and her recent form has been flattered by trips to Turf Paradise.
Most Certain Exotics Contender:
QUEEN GODDESS is in peak form and just beat her principal rival in this race.
Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
None projected.
Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$100 exacta QUEEN GODDESS over NEIGE BLANCHE. Your best value here will be singling QUEEN GODDESS in the early and late pick five, which this Race 5 will be part of both on a 9-race program.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks
Santa Anita - Race #5
Picks Notes
#1 Queen Goddess She just handled some of these last out, and she has the right kind of running style to find a good trip from the fence. She should be in a pretty perfect spot into the far turn, and it looks like her race to lose.
#3 Queen of the Temple Maiden riser gets a big class test today, but she might get a decent enough trip from midpack in this small field. She has been getting better the longer she runs, and she's not out of the question if she loves the trip.
#4 Neige Blanche She didn't have the easiest of trips last time out when chasing the top choice, but she will probably sit closer today and wouldn't be a surprise to turn the tables.
Race Summary Queen Goddess won't be a price, but she is in good form and has a tactical edge over a couple other logical players. Queen of the Temple is interesting off the maiden win, as she is still getting better and might find this trip to her liking.
Santa Anita - Race #7
Picks Notes
#7 Suite Madam Blue She has some pace in a race without a ton of serious speed lined up, and it looks like she's the main threat here if she's able to just hold her form that has already propelled her to two wins here this year.
#6 Storming Lady Her better tries stack up nicely with these, and she might find a pretty perfect spying spot with this group. Her running lines fit with this kind of company, and her somewhat spotty form includes a handful of tries against much better.
#3 Flying to the Line Cutback player brings good Turf Paradise form with her, and she doesn't seem completely overmatched for a chance at a share against these. Along late?
Race Summary Suite Madam Blue should get a trip that gives her every chance to land this from right up on the splits, as she appears to have the most committed pace in a race where most will settle.
Santa Anita - Race #8
Picks Notes
#6 Go Joe Won He moved up in a big way when sent around two turns, and he showed some pace that day which should serve him well against a group without a ton of early speed. Perfect trip from this post?
#2 One More Bid He caught a tough winner last out, but he still hasn't shown a really fierce finishing gear yet, and I worry he'll get stuck chasing the top choice into the far turn.
#4 Lord Sheldon He's probably better down the road, but I'm not really convinced about the depth in this group, so he may not have to be a heavy hitter to get a piece of this at first asking.
Race Summary Go Joe Won stuck around nicely when trying a route trip for the first time, and he's fast enough to find position into the first turn from his wide draw, and he should be able to get first jump on a couple of deeper threats.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks
Pocono Downs - Race #3
Picks Notes
#7 COXCOMB Won from post 10, just missed after fast back half in follow-up.
#2 WESTERN WALTZ Couldn’t keep up with fleet-footed, 2-to-5 fave, moves outside in.
#5 CHUCK THE CHEESE Won from on and off the pace recently at the Meadows.
Race Summary Meadows invader Coxcomb was out-kicked by the 17-1 pocket sitter through a :55.4 back half in his bid for a repeat victory. Early position will be key as he starts for a new barn. Play a 7-ALL exacta.
Northfield Park - Race #3
Picks Notes
#4 IVANNA IVY Winning machine seeks third in a row, goes from one good barn to another.
#1 HERESLOOKNATYOU Rallied for second in three straight while ascending ranks.
#5 NOONE TO DEPEND ON Out-kicked for win at Miami Valley after fave broke stride.
Race Summary Ivanna Ivy has speed, loves to win and held on to repeat despite broken equipment. She can pay a quick dividend off the claim for high-percentage connections. Bet to win and place.
Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #7
Picks Notes
#8 ROCKIN N TALKIN Slowed by 42-1 leader, made late run at winner while 4-wide.
#5 DONTPOKETHEDRAGON Has loyal following, led until stretch, looks to recapture 2021 form.
#4 GRAND POOBAH Third against better two back, paced evenly in 1:50.2 in latest.
Race Summary Rockin N Talkin broke alertly from post 9, was shuffled from the pocket in the middle half as the longshot pace setter yielded, then raced evenly late to finish second while 4-wide. He draws outside again but could break through with his first win of the year in his third start of a current cycle. Play a 4-5-8 exacta box.

MISS BRAZIL ran the top last race speed figure and is another that could benefit in round two after a layoff. KEPT WAITING looks much better on paper than ASSERTIVE STYLE.

COMMENTS: GUFO six triple digit speed numbers in his last seven starts. The rest of the field has three combined. YIBIR is undefeated in two US races. He must be careful not to get caught in traffic as a deep closer. ABAAN popped major increases in his pace numbers last out. The concern is that he could bounce but you cannot ignore the improvement. SO HIGH is a flier on the backend for exotics.

COMMENTS: ELECTABILITY won his last two and now switches to jockey Irad Ortiz. WE THE PEOPLE was one of the favorites in the Arkansas Derby but failed to fire. He will try and rebound to the form that won his first pair of races with ease. SET SAIL broke his maiden in his second try with similar fractions at 1 mile as at 7 furlongs. GOLDEN GLIDER has been facing tough company along the derby trail.

COMMENTS: LEMISTA has been off since last August but 29 furlongs of good works since April 1st say he is ready. PLUM ALI won two in a row and is undefeated in three at the distance. RUNAWAY RUMOUR is a horse for the course with three wins a second and third in five at Belmont. She has one second in four races elsewhere. ROUGIR could be the favorite but his few runs on a firm turf surface resulted in some of her worst performances.

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | May 14, 2022 May 13, 2022
Race 9 at Churchill Downs | Saturday May 14 | Post Time 10:11 PM Eastern
Mamzelle Stakes | Purse $160,000 | Five Furlongs on Turf | Fillies, Three Years Old
Contenders: Mystic Eyes (2) offers us low odds overlay value for a win bet, as well is a great horse to key on our exacta tickets. The reason is although she opens at 3 to 1, the starting favorite Twilight Gleaming (6 to 5) is a bit suspect. I’ll talk about that more later when I talk about Twilight Gleaming. Mystic Eyes has done little wrong in her career, starting with a superb win in hand by nearly five lengths in a turf sprint like this. She was highly regarded enough to enter a stakes in her second start, last summer, and was not disgraced when leading late and settling for second of 11 at the end. Next she was beaten one length after leading from the start in the Grade 3 Matron Stakes on the grass at Belmont, before ending her 2021 season with a win in a stakes on the grass at Belmont. Now she’s a more mature three year old, fresh off a six month layoff, and with better early speed and a better post than Twilight Gleaming. This will enable Ricardo Santana to get Mystic Eyes out on the lead from the start from where she can relax and go all the way.
Boxing Day (4) is the interesting longshot, opening at 15 to 1. She too won a turf sprint in her career debut, one day before Mystic Eyes finished second last summer at Kentucky Downs. She ran poorly in two totally irrelevant turf routes then took three months off. Returning in March and back in a sprint, Boxing Day ran pretty good as she led by a half-length late in the race then settled for second in a field of nine. Although third in her next start on March 24, her most recent, she ran faster, and she made up two and one-half lengths in the late stages. She’s on an improving pattern and although not nearly as likely to win as Mystic Eyes, Boxing Day is more likely to run well than her 15/1 starting odds suggest.
Artos (9) ran second in a turf sprint in her career debut last April to Ruthin, who is now a stakes winner. Then nearly one year ago this week, Artos broke her maiden in her second career start, here at Churchill Downs on the turf, in a race which she led early, fell back to fourth (three lengths behind the winner) then re-rallied to win. She went to Royal Ascot last June and was NOT disgraced when fourth of 21 in the Queen Mary Stakes, a race in which Twilight Gleaming finished second. Rested for nine months, Artos returned in a stakes at Gulfstream Park at the end of March and although well regarded ran poorly to end up last of nine. Returning to Kentucky, she’s feeling very good as evidenced by a sparkling half-mile workout in 47.4 from the gate 10 days ago, and so if she runs back either of her first two races, particularly the one here at Churchill Downs, she could have a say in the outcome.
Twilight Gleaming (5) opens as the 6 to 5 favorite. She has three wins but then she also has three runner-up finishes, in six starts. She tries hard but last month in the similar Palisades Stakes at Keeneland she got run down in the late stages as the four to five favorite after leading on slow fractions. Considering she’s not going to lead early this time, as Mystic Eyes is faster and has an inside draw, Twilight Gleaming is going to have to pass in the final yards, which is not something she’s done to date.
Win bets:
Mystic Eyes (2) at odds of 9 to 5 or higher.
A smaller win bet can be made on Boxing Day (4) at odds of 6 to 1 or more.
Exactas:
Mystic Eyes (2) over Boxing Day (4), Twilight Gleaming (5) and Artos (9).
For a smaller amount, perhaps the $1 minimum, or $2, box Mystic Eyes (2), Boxing Day (4) and Artos (9).

Belmont Park Hotlist - May 14 May 13, 2022
Today’s NY Hot List races to watch – Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Belmont Park
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (6) Devil Boy (B) has been away from the races for almost a year when he had troubled trips in both of his starts at Belmont Park. (7) Ocean’s Reserve (B) had one start last year at Saratoga when he was rank and had to check early in the race. He was well bet in that race and the blinkers come off. (1) Conquist debuted in November when he was third at odds of 4-1. He’ll get first-time Lasix for his return to the track. (5) N Y Anthem started his career at Parx when he finished third at odds of 7-1 and now will face NY-breds.
6th race [Alw 92000 N1X, 1 mi TURF] – (1A) Baby Blythe (B) was heavily restrained and rank in the Jockey Club Oaks and got stuck out wide on an inside favoring track when last seen in September. (6) Naked On the Beach got back on the turf for Mike Maker and ran her best career race at Aqueduct last month. (3) Lay the Groundwork broke her maiden in February for Chad Brown in a Gulfstream race that was meant for the turf. (10) Caironi was a debut winner last year at Belmont and then was second and fourth in turf stakes in New York. She has been off for the winter.
8th race [Man o’War (G1), 1 3/8 mi TURF] – (1) Easter (A) had a promising American debut when third in an allowance at Aqueduct after racing in France. Trainer Graham Motion is better with imports like this in their later starts. (3) Yibir won the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) last year and the Eclipse Award for Champion Male Turf horse. This year he has a pair of seconds in Group overseas. He thrived on American turf courses last year. (2) Gufo made his 2022 debut a winning one in the Pan American (G2) at Gulfstream Park. He was a Grade 1 winner last year. (4) Abaan was second behind Gufo last time and has the look of an improving turf horse and may be the primary speed in the field.
9th race [Peter Pan (G3), 1 1/8 mi] – (2) Electability won his last two starts at Aqueduct in a maiden special weight and then an allowance. The Chad Brown barn is red hot at the current meeting winning with 32% of their runners. (1) Set Sail ships to New York from Santa Anita after a seven-length maiden score for Richard Mandella. The fact that he will ship an inexperienced horse like this across the country has to be an endorsement of his talent. (4) We the People won his first two starts at Oaklawn Park and then was washed out before the Arkansas Derby (G1). Keep an eye on this guy in the post parade. (6) Western River is a full brother of Belmont Stakes winner Creator and a recent impressive maiden winner at Oaklawn Park.
Best bets: Devil Boy (1st); Baby Blythe (6th). Best value: Easter (8th); Electability (9th).

Today’s Churchill Downs Hot List races to watch
Saturday, May 14, 2022
By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (5) American Hero was third in a claimer and looks best in this starter allowance test. The (1) entry of Cole Spur and Bureau should be the main competition. (2) Summer in Malibu will benefit from a cutback to a sprint. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5.
3rd race – (2) Apache Tears (B) had traffic issues late when second last time and can make amends here. (3) Carmelito should be more competitive on turf. (7) Lesson Learned flopped in his U.S. debut but can rebound here. (1) Purple Dream could be a factor from the rail. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-7.
7th race – (7) Arrobatic debuts on turf for Chad Brown and merits close attention. (2) Red Hot Mama will welcome an inside post and a return to turf. (1) Walkathon exits a nice maiden win and should be a factor. (8) Glenall will appreciate the class relief after running in a graded stakes. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-8.
9th race – (5) Twilight Gleaming seems fast enough to handle this field in gate-to-wire fashion. (2) Mystic Eyes looks like the most dangerous rival. (12) Street Tapper should get some consideration despite the layoff. (4) Boxing Day could land a knockout punch here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-12
11th race – (8) Porouni (D) was bet down from 8-1 to 5-1 and tired badly after a couple of good efforts. Could perk up with a better try here. (3) Beachfront Bid has a nice closing kick and is the one to fear. (4) Chiromante is a firster from a hot barn who deserves respect. (5) My Lily Mae should be closing fast in the stretch. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5-8.

# 3 VALERIE VALESKI 9/5
# 1 BAKFIRE BABY 7/2
# 2 THE KAT'S BACK 3/1
I like VALERIE VALESKI here. Perez will most likely be able to get this filly to break out quickly for this race. Earnings per start in dirt sprint races is formidable for this animal. This filly has posted some nice finishing positions in her last couple of starts. BAKFIRE BABY - Has decent Equibase Speed Figs and has to be considered for a wager in this race. Has quite good early lick and ought to fare well against this field. THE KAT'S BACK - This mare looks good in this contest since Krasner has a strong winning percentage with horses going this distance. The speed figure of 71 from her most recent contest looks very good in here.

FRANK’S CUTTING ROOM FLOOR FOR SATURDAY, 5/14:
My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Saturday afternoon was with the Carolina Hurricanes with the money-line versus the Boston Bruins in their Game Seven at 4:37 PM ET. Carolina (57-23-8) limps home after losing their third game in their last four in this series with a 5-2 loss on the road against the Bruins on Thursday. The Hurricanes have won 5 of their last 6 games after a loss by three or more goals. They have won 40 of their last 54 games at home when favored. Boston (53-30-5) has lost 4 games in a row on the road. They have also lost 5 straight playoff games as the underdog. Take Carolina with the money-line. Best of luck — Frank.

Play on: Hurricanes -131 at linepros
The Bruins knocked the Hurricanes out of two recent postseasons. In both cases, they had home ice advantage. That's no longer the case. The Canes finished ahead of the Bruins this season and that means that they have the benefit of playing this afternoon's winner-take-all game on home ice. We've seen how significant that's been all series; the home team is a perfect 6-0. The Canes are 32-12 here at home. While I respect the Bruins, I like the Canes' chances of advancing. Consider Carolina.

MLB | Brewers vs Marlins
Play on: Brewers -117 at SC Consensus
My free play is on the Mil Brewers at 6:10 ET.
The Milwaukee Brewers entered the current season having made the last four postseasons, winning the NL Central in 2021 and were favored to repeat in 2022. The Marlins joined the National League in 1993 and entering the COVID-shortened season of 2020, had made the postseason just TWICE. However, the Marlins would capture the World Series each time, in 1997 over the Indians and in 2003 over the Yankees. The Marlins overcame all sorts of team COVID issues to end a 16-year postseason drought in 2020 but the 2021 team finished 67-95. The Brewers and Marlins opened a three-game series last night in Miami, with Milwaukee winning 2-1. The teams continue the series Saturday, with Milwaukee sitting at 21-12 (3 1/2-games up on the Cards in the NL Central) and Miami at 14-18, SEVEN games behind the Mets in the NL East.
Saturday's pitching matchup features Eric Lauer (3-0, 1.82 ERA for Milwaukee and Trevor Rogers (1-4, 5.00 ERA) for Miami. Rogers was a modest 7-8 in 25 starts as a rookie but owned an ERA of 2.64, a 1.15 WHIP plus opponents hit just .218 against him. However, we saw NOTHING like that from him in his first five starts of 2022, as he was 1-4 with a 6.14 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a BAA of .262. However, he is coming off his best performance of the year, when he pitched five scoreless innings last Sunday against the San Diego Padres, scattering five hits. As luck would have it, the Padres hit a walk-off three-run HR in the 9th for a 3-2 win. That leaves Miami 1-5 in Rogers' starts this season. A 'ray of hope' could be that in two career starts against the Brewers (both last year), Rogers is 2-0 with an ERA of 0.82 and 13 strikeouts in 11 innings.
Then again, his mound opponent is Eric Lauer, who was a first-round pick in 2017 for San Diego. Lauer showed improvement in his first season with Milwaukee last year, going 7-5 with a 3.19 ERA in 24 appearances (20 starts). That still left him just 21-24 with a 4.28 ERA in 81 appearances (74 starts) entering 2022. Milwaukee owns a strong starting rotation, but no one has been better than Lauer, who is 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA. 0.94 WHIP, and a 42-8 KW ratio, all while holding opponents to a .189 BAA.
It's NO surprise that Milwaukee has won ALL five of his starts and it will be NO surprise when Lauer makes it SIX consecutive winning starts here vs Miami.
Good luck...Larry

1* FREE PLAY Reds.
The Reds started the season 3-22, but they've now won 5 of their last 6 after crushing the Pirates here by a score of 8-2 on Friday night. I say the visiting side keeps the momentum rolling on Saturday. Cincinnati has averaged 7.8 RPG over its last 6 games. This is Castillo's second official start. He's 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA after allowing 3 runs over 5 innings vs. the hard-hitting Brewers in his debut. Here's a great opponent to get back on track against. Pittsburgh's posted just 2 runs so far to open up this series. Zach Thompson has been a confirmed "gas can" as well, going 1-3 with a 7.08 ERA over five starts for the Bucs. Great overall value here on the hungry visiting side in my opinion; consider the Reds on Saturday!

MLB | Red Sox vs Rangers
Play on: Red Sox +108 at Caesars
Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Boston Red Sox +108
I'll hop back on the Boston Red Sox in another 'buy low' spot on after cashing them in as +105 underdogs in a 7-1 victory over the Rangers yesterday. The Red Sox come back as similar-sized underdogs today against a team they should be favored against.
The Red Sox have been arguably the most disappointing team in baseball at 12-20 this season. But that's the only reason we are getting them as underdogs against a Texas Rangers team that will prove to be one of the worst in baseball by season's end. Since the Rangers have gone 7-4 in their last 11 games overall, they are starting to get some unwarranted respect.
Rich Hill should not be an underdog to Glenn Otto today. Hill has posted a 2.86 ERA and 1.091 WHIP in five starts this season. He is 2-0 with a 2.94 ERA and 1.044 WHIP in three career starts against the Rangers as well.
Texas is 3-11 in its last 14 games as a favorite. The Rangers are 6-20 in their last 26 vs. AL East opponents. Boston is 20-9 in its last 29 meetings with Texas. Bet the Red Sox Saturday.

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Cleveland Guardians -122
I'll back the Cleveland Guardians and ace Shane Bieber today over the Minnesota Twins. Bieber has a 3.09 ERA and 1.03 WHIP n his four road starts this season. Bieber is 5-1 with a 3.47 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 11 previous starts against the Twins. Cleveland has gone 9-2 in those 11 starts. Drew Smeltzer will be getting the spot start for the Twins today. He has a 4.26 ERA in 69 2/3 innings pitched in the big leagues. The Guardians are 35-17 in their last 52 games as favorites. The Twins are 2-7 in their last nine games as home underdogs. Give me the Guardians.

1* on Chicago White Sox +148
The Key: I like the price we are getting on the Chicago White Sox as big home underdogs to the New York Yankees. They will be hungry for a win after losing the first 2 games of this series to New York. They crush left-handed pitching, and they will be up against lefty Jordan Montgomery of the Yankees today. Few starters have had as much success against the Yankees as Dallas Keuchel has. Keuchel is 6-5 with a 2.18 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 12 lifetime starts against New York. The White Sox are 44-20 in their last 64 games against a left-handed starter. Take Chicago.

The New York Yankees take on the White Sox in Chicago on Saturday night. NY Yankees are 24-8 SU overall this year while the Chicago White Sox come in with a 15-16 SU overall record on the season. Jordan Montgomery has a 2.90 ERA overall this year, 1.69 ERA on the road this season and a 3.24 ERA his last 3 starts. Montgomery is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in 3 career starts vs the White Sox. Dallas Keuchel is 2-3 with a 7.29 ERA overall this year. Yankees are 6-1 last 7 games overall scoring 5.9 runs per game. Yankees are 7-1 overall vs the White Sox the past 3 years. Yankees are 48-17 last 3 years including 10-1 this year after 3 or more consecutive wins. We'll recommend a small play on the NY Yankees tonight! Thanks and good luck, Rocky

MLB | Cubs vs Diamondbacks
Play on: Diamondbacks -140 at Ace
1* Free Sharp Play on Diamondbacks -140
The Diamondbacks (-140) are worth a look as a decently priced home favorite against the Cubs in Saturday's MLB action. This just feels like way too good a price to back a red-hot Arizona team with one of their aces on the mound. Dbacks are 8-2 in their last 10 games. They will have Zac Gallen starting. Gallen has a 0.95 ERA and 0.706 WHIP in 5 starts. He'll be facing a Cubs team that is averaging just 3.3 runs/game over their last 7, hitting just .217 as team during this stretch. Kyle Hendricks will start for Chicago. He's a well-known name and pitched well in his last start, but overall he's been pretty bad in 2022. Hendricks has a 4.38 ERA and 1.256 WHIP in 7 starts. Play the Diamondbacks -140!

MLB | Cubs vs Diamondbacks
Play on: Diamondbacks -150 at SC Consensus
Saturday's MLB Free Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks -150
I'll take my chances with the Diamondbacks as a -150 home favorite against the Cubs. Arizona is playing really good baseball right now. Dbacks are 12-4 over their last 16 games. It's the exact opposite for Chicago, who is just 5-12 over their last 17.
How do you not put a little money on Arizona here with Zac Gallen on the mound. Gallen has a miniscule 0.95 ERA and 0.706 WHIP in 5 starts. He's only given up 1 run in 18 innings over 3 home starts this season.
Cubs will have Kyle Hendricks on the mound. Yes, he pitched great in his last outing at the Padres, but he's 2-3 with a 4.38 ERA and 1.256 WHIP in 7 starts. He's got a much worse 6.48 ERA and 1.440 WHIP in 3 road starts. Give me the Diamondbacks -150!
Confidence Rating: 6 (Scale of 1-10)

Play - Arizona Diamondbacks w/Gallen vs Steele (Game 910).
Edges - Diamondbacks: Gallen 4-1 with 0.95 ERA and 0.71 WHIP team starts this season; and 17 Ks with 2 BBs last three starts … Cubs: Steele 2-4 with 5.32 ERA with 1.77 WHIP team-starts this season; and 5-10 overall career team-starts … With that we recommend a 1* play on Arizona. Thank you and good luck as always.

MLB | Royals vs Rockies
Play on: Rockies -152 at William Hill
Even beating the Rockies, 14-10, last night the Royals still only rank 27th in runs and 29th in homers. I give the Rockies a bigger edge than this mid-size line indicates to even their series at home against Kansas City.
The pitching matchup is Carlos Hernandez against German Marquez.
Hernandez may be losing his spot in the rotation if he keeps pitching so poorly. He has a 7.15 ERA. I don't see him getting things turned around at Coors Field. The Rockies are averaging 6.5 runs in their last 13 home games.
The Royals have lost 11 of their last 16 road games.
Marquez made the All-Star team last year. He's off to a disappointing start, but logged a quality start this past Sunday against the Diamondbacks holding them to three runs in six innings. He knows how to pitch at Coors Field, something Hernandez lacks.

# 8 LOOK UP 6/1
# 1 FAVORITE HONEY 2/1
# 5 WATCH OUT 5/1
My selection for this race is LOOK UP. With Nicasio on top him, this gelding will most likely be able to break out quickly in this event. Could best this group of animals based on the speed fig - 88 - of his last race. FAVORITE HONEY - Is tough not to consider based on Equibase speed figs which have been competitive - 84 avg - of late. Arrossa has one of the most respectable winning percentages in this group of horses with entries running at this distance and surface. WATCH OUT - A solid 89 avg Equibase class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this group of animals. Has to be given a chance against this field displaying very good numbers lately and an average speed rating of 82 under similar conditions.

#3 CHARGING LION (ML=5/1)
#7 ALPHA QUEUE (ML=5/2)
#1 SHAMCAT (ML=30/1)
CHARGING LION - I unquestionably see positive things for this noble animal right here. ALPHA QUEUE - Gelding finished first his last race here on Apr 20th as a shipper. I think he looks like a winner once again. This gelding is in good form. Finished first on April 20th. Look at this pattern of improvement. 42/72/91 are the last three speed ratings. The 91 last race speed rating looks strong in black and white. SHAMCAT - Each one of this horse's recent finish positions has been progressively better. McKenzie rode this thoroughbred for the first time last out and comes right back this race. Speed, plus the rail, plus a bullring equals a dominant contender. Looking over this horse's PPs, I see a couple of wins at double-digit odds.
Vulnerable Contenders: #8 MARTIN MAN (ML=2/1), #2 MIDNIGHT SHIFT (ML=4/1), #5 COURT AND SPARK (ML=6/1),
MARTIN MAN - You should normally wager against probable favorites that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last three weeks. This horse doesn't have a tenacious temperament. Time-and-again finishes in the place and show hole. MIDNIGHT SHIFT - That was just not a very good exhibition in the last event. COURT AND SPARK - Even though victorious in last, didn't finish the way you'd like to see when stepping up to face tougher opponents. A strong animal that's been running well, but he's been off the track in the mornings recently. Could be tough for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underpriced contenders list.

#2 LEMON BLITZ (ML=3/1)
LEMON BLITZ - Jansen drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more handicapping knowledge to think this one will be tough to beat at this level. Jansen brings him right back. I propose you stick with this hot gelding.
Vulnerable Contenders: #3 CAMPAIGN SPY (ML=5/2), #1 ZARMAE (ML=7/2), #5 TOCCETIVE JAC (ML=9/2),
CAMPAIGN SPY - This gelding notched a speed rating in his last affair which likely isn't good enough today. ZARMAE - On a downward series. Speed ratings keep deteriorating. This horse hasn't been in the money in either of his last couple of races. TOCCETIVE JAC - Awfully hard to bet on this pony when he hasn't been showing any signs of life of late. This runner will probably need at least one more start after the lackluster showing following the long layoff. Not probable that the speed rating he notched on Apr 30th will be good enough in this event.
https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - LEMON BLITZ - Earnings per start is one measure of class I like to check out. This thoroughbred is at the top in the group and has a good shot to beat this crew.
