Queen’s Plate Post Draw Reaction

Sunday’s 163rd edition of the Queen’s Plate, Canada’s most prestigious race, attracted a field of 11 contenders at today’s post-position draw ceremony. Moira, the Woodbine Oaks-winning filly, landed in post 8 and has been deemed the 5-2 morning line favorite by track oddsmaker Ernie Perry. The daughter of Ghostzapper could become the 38th filly to win the Queen’s Plate.

Bettors playing the Queen’s Plate with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet can take advantage of $20,000 in Hit & Split bonuses surrounding the day’s key bets and races.

Moira’s late-running style should not be impacted from her draw in post 8. The pace of the Queen’s Plate likely comes from Marine front-runner and beaten favorite Ironstone in post 3. Todd Pletcher’s New York-based Causin’ Mayhem set the tempo in the Plate Trial and his task becomes a bit tougher from post 11 on Sunday, though there’s a long run to the clubhouse turn. Marine winner Rondure, second choice in the morning line at 3-1, is drawn fine in post 6 with a style to stalk or close, and starting to the outside of Ironstone. He’ll partner with Flavien Prat.

Duke of Love begins from post 5 for 3-time Queen’s Plate-winning trainer Josie Carroll. The Cupid colt was runner-up in the Marine before a disappointing fourth in the Plate Trial with traffic excuses. Plate Trial winner Sir for Sure can give Mark Casse a third Queen’s Plate trophy if successful from post 10.

Sunday’s Woodbine program begins at 1:00 pm ET first post time. The undercard includes the Grade 2 Canadian, Grade 2 King Edward and the Sweet Brian Too Stakes.

Race of the Week: Queen's Plate at Woodbine | Sunday, August 21, 2022

The Lead:
Canada's most prestigious horse race kicks off its annual Triple Crown series Sunday when the Queen's Plate will be renewed for the 163rd time. Woodbine's 4 stakes card includes the Grade 2 Canadian and Grade 2 King Edward on turf, but it's the sophomores on Tapeta that will be out to make history. The 1-1/4 miles Queen's Plate will be in front of a full grandstand for the first time since 2019.

​Field Depth:
Grade 3 winner RONDURE won the key open-company prep for this race restricted to Canadian foals. IRONSTONE is multiple Grade 3-placed. MOIRA won the Woodbine Oaks against Canadian-foaled fillies, but also is G3-placed in open company. SIR FOR SURE upset the Plate Trial against many of these.

Pace:
IRONSTONE went to the front in the Marine like a rocketship, and from post 3 the 7-time sprinter in 9 starts likely will make the pace. CAUSIN' MAYHEM set a slow pace in the Plate Trial, but has 45-and-change dirt speed from Belmont and absolutely could contend for the lead. The pace should be above-average for 1-1/4 miles if IRONSTONE pulls the same early stunt.

Our Eyes:
Race replay study of the July 2 Marine and July 24 Plate Trial covers 8 of the 11 contenders. Here are my key takeaways.

Marine: DUKE OF LOVE had a horrendous start and first quarter-mile, though the past performance short comments pay it no homage. The start was far more consequential. RONDURE got a dream trip, first-over behind the runaway early speedster and took over with authority. He finished up far flashier to the eye than the Plate Trial alumni. The only negative is that Marine runner-up DUKE OF LOVE acme back to a troubled and disappointing fourth in the Plate Trial, so how good was the Marine field that RONDURE dusted? That's a fair question, but the winner sure looked strong.

Plate Trial: THE MINSKTER was the 9-5 favorite and are held from tackling the leaders through the stretch the first time. Jockey David Moran didn't do him any favors for the first half-mile, and was left empty late. He could improve with a more hands-off ride. No excuses for the front-running pair of CAUSIN' MAYHEM or DANCIN IN DA'NILE, which makes it hard to play them back at a furlong farther. SIR FOR SURE and HALL OF DREAMS had not done much prior and visually didn't impress. The only Plate Trial alumni to interest would be THE MINKSTER and perhaps a rebound effort from the twice-troubled DUKE OF LOVE. The latter is trained by 3-time Queen's Plate winner Josie Carroll.

MOIRA (pictured above) is the new face and wildcard. Fillies have had plenty of success in the Queen's Plate, including recent years, so scoff not at the Woodbine Oaks winner. She was patient, saved ground, absorbed the kickback and didn't find jockey Rafael Hernandez at all. She responded nicely just beyond the half-mile marker and sustained a 3-1/2 furlong run out in the clear while swallowing the field and just naming her margin. She should get a great pace set-up for her finishing kick, which has seen here a mere half-length from perfection in 4 starts.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
MOIRA looked the part in the Woodbine Oaks and the additional furlong should not be a major hurdle.

THE MINKSTER at 10-1 morning line is worth a rebound look at a price.

I do like the offspring of Uncle Mo, one of the best sires in this era. A former claimer, she showed some early speed in her Belmont races. I particularly like that she has a win over the Saratoga track. The hustle and budding talent of Jose Gomez is fun to watch. This runner is a good bet at a square price …

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Tiberius Mercurius #8, 8/1):

Looking for some value on this Saratoga card, I would not negate the power of this 6-yr-old from Mike Maker’s midst. I realize that the son of The Factor has dropped way down from his prior levels. It was the spring when he competed against tough OC and ALLW Co. We know that this trainer can be “live” at any given moment, and he always pairs well with Three Diamonds Farm. Dropping further, the horse still has 2-turn capability, and with Luis Saez in the irons, this is a great play. Most will think that his Clm40k effort was very poor last out at Saratoga, but this is turf racing … always a chance for redemption.

In recent times it has been advantageous to be up on speed at Sale, and with the rail in the true position for this meeting, we expect that trend to continue once again. The Archie Alexander-trained Appealing is the first horse we find in the race book, and he looks to be a clear best bet of the day. The five-year-old mare has finished second at each of her last three starts and gets her chance to bring up a deserved maiden win at start five. With speed drawn either side of the mare, jockey Declan Bates will look to camp on the heels of those leaders so when the moment arises, Appealing will be ready to strike inside the final furlong. She got swamped inside the final 50m at Bendigo on June 30 after hitting the front too early in the home straight and being left vulnerable. If Bates can have her finding the lead inside the last 200m, the even-money quote with online Bookmaker (http://www.bookmaker.eu/?cmpid=4437)s looks… Appealing.

We will be hoping it is a successful day for the Archie Alexander and Declan Bates combination as they also combine with Brookline in the opening leg of the quaddie. The five-year-old mare managed to string together consecutive victories this campaign before heading to Flemington, where she chased home the likes of My Yankee Girl and Bella Rouge. Both of those runners would be short odds-on favourites with online betting sites in a race like this, so we expect Brookline to bounce back into the winner’s stall. With all three of her career victories coming on rain-affected going, including two wins from as many starts on Heavy tracks, we are certain she will handle the conditions in front of her at Sale. Bates had Brookline settled in the lead and then outside the leader for those two consecutive victories, and if the mare can be afforded the luxury of leading or settling outside the leader once again, she will be tough to beat.

We were with the Matthew Brown-trained Velicina when she resumed from a long spell at Bairnsdale on July 26, and the performance suggested she was in need of the run and could be ready to fire next start. She was beaten under a half-length on that day in Heavy going, so we expect she will handle the conditions with aplomb on Sunday. In a race where there does not appear to be too much early speed, look for Zac Spain to have this mare settled in the one-one throughout. She has a win and two minor placings from four goes on Heavy ground, and considering the two main market fancies are yet to race on a Heavy, Velicina looks to be a great play at a nice price in the penultimate event.

In Spa Selections, our correspondent provides his Saratoga picks for key races on today’s Saratoga card!

Race 8 – Alw 115000n1x

1. #8 Baba (3-1) – Typically only wins if he breaks to the lead, but his race last time was one of the stronger of this field even in a narrow defeat, and can go gate to wire with the right fractions

2. #2 Repealing (8-5) – Might be best sitting in second or third here instead of grabbing the early lead, but still looks vulnerable here even with plenty of others who have questions

3. #4 Chloe Rose (10-1) – Has run her best at Saratoga, also finishing in the money in six of seven at this distance but takes a slight step up here

4. #5 Exxaltress (6-1) – Got crushed in a stakes field last time, but should improve with the drop here and has a race two back that puts her in the mix

Race 9 – Bolton Landing Stakes

1. #9 Sweet Harmony (8-1) – Sat off a quick pace last time in a stakes race and won by a length, and can win here with a similar trip and stalking running style

2. #2 Love Reigns (2-1) – Wesley Ward has fared well in this race in the past, and this is his top entry that drops from a grade II try and has the talent to go gate to wire here

3. #6 Aztec Nights (10-1) – Had a sharp debut and got a win over this track, plus should be solid value here with just one start

4. #5 Grand Oak (8-1) – Probably won’t win with a front end type trip, but could be a contender with a stalking or closing trip if the pace set up is right

Race 10 – MC 40000

1. #9 Candlestick Maker (9-2) – Seems to be improving at the right time and has the form to be able to beat this field even coming from maiden claimers

2. #8 Vagaries (8-5) – Gets the class drop to claiming company and maybe ran her best as a deep closer which could be tough here in a field of eleven

3. #6 Miscreant (10-1) – Took a slight step forward when switching to the turf, and gets Jose Ortiz here who can place this filly more forward this time

4. #5 Empress Theodora (5-1) – Was competitive first time out in this class, struggling when moving up to open maidens so should run better moving back down

Saratoga Horses in Focus for Sunday, August 21

RACE 5: REUX (#1)

The obvious horse to beat in this $32k claimer is Devamani (#3), winner of the Grade 2 Knickerbocker and Grade 3 Monmouth Stakes, who is dropping down significantly after having plenty of success for these connections. He just hasn’t come back in the same form now that he’s an 8-year-old. For what it’s worth, Chad Brown is 6 for 10 (60%, $3.25 ROI) with non-maidens getting 50% claiming tag dropdowns over the past 5 years. He’s a deserving favorite, but I am a little concerned about his running style in a race that lacks a clear pace scenario. The other noteworthy dropdown in this field is Monarchs Glen (#10). However, his recent form leaves a lot to be desired and he’s another lacking early speed. Mertkan Kantarmaci has entered two uncoupled runners for turf and I think they’re both fairly interesting. Attentive (#3) looks logical as he drops slightly off the claim for $40k last time. I thought he put in a decent effort, and he also feels like one that can be slightly more forward than few other contenders. My top pick is Reux (#1). I know his recent form looks terrible, but he feels like the potential controlling speed in this race. I also like him stretching out in distance, since he was most effective at a mile and beyond when racing overseas earlier in his career. Kantarmaci has deceptively strong statistics off the claim on turf, especially over the past two years. He’s showing an improved worktab for this race, and may be ready for a step forward at a big price.

RACE 7: TIDE OF THE SEA (#4)

Balthus (#3) just seems to be putting it all together for Chad Brown. This well-bred son of Galileo returned as a new horse since getting gelded and adding blinkers. He’s also responded well to the gradual stretch-out in distance, and seems like one that will relish today’s 1 1/2 miles. However, he was almost 6-1 when he won last time, and now he’ll be a fraction of that price while stepping up to face a tougher field. I don’t doubt that he’s the horse to beat, but I just didn’t feel compelled to throw more support towards him at a shorter price. I do much prefer him to the possible second choice Reigning Spirit (#7). This horse got the right trip last time the Louisville. Though he was wide for much of his trip, he stayed out of trouble in race where many others had to deal with traffic issues. He’s obviously better going longer, but I need some confirmation of that last-out improvement before backing him in a spot like this. I’m instead going in a different direction with Tide of the Sea (#4). It’s possible that this 6-year-old’s career is simply finished, as his recent turf form has been pretty abysmal compared to the peak of his career. Yet now he’s been claimed by Tom Morley for Flying P Stables, a combination that has had plenty of success, especially in this situation. Morley is 16 for 57 (28%, $2.78 ROI) second off the claim over the past 3 years. He has rehabilitated a few runners for these connections, mostly recent Lure Stakes winner Dynadrive. Tide of the Sea didn’t actually run that badly on turf three back, and last time he actually showed some signs of life on dirt for these connections. He figures to be the controlling speed on the stretch-out.

RACE 9: DANSE MACABRE (#8)

Wesley Ward sends out two runners in this Bolton Landing, including likely favorite Love Reigns (#2), who is returning to the U.S. following a solid effort in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. Her career debut at Keeneland was obviously very impressive, as she earned a 97 TimeformUS Speed Figure for that performance. Ward has great stats with these types, as he is 12 for 22 (55%, $3.35 ROI) with 2-year-old foreign shippers over the past 5 years. A return to that form makes her an obvious contender, though I’m not sure she deserves to be an overwhelming favorite. This came up a pretty strong field for this type of race and there are definitely others to consider. Grand Oak (#5) didn’t run nearly as well as Love Reigns in that Queen Mary, but she figures to be more effective getting back to American racing. She showed promise in her first couple of starts and is sure to be a much better price. My top pick is Danse Macabre (#8). She showed ability in her debut when second to Schuylerville runner-up Summer Promise, and it felt like she really took a step forward on the turf last time. Though she broke her maiden at Colonial, she did so in a turf race that seems pretty strong for the level. She earned a 102 TimeformUS Speed Figure for the performance, which is the highest number in this field. She drew away impressively in the lane and there were some significant gaps behind her, often a hallmark of a fast race. Trainer Kelsey Danner does excellent work with turf sprinters and is 5 for 19 (26%, $5.08 ROI) in turf sprints at NYRA over the past 5 years.

RACE 1: CLAIMING $16,000 (N/W2L), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 1 MILE (GRASS)

4-10-8-5

We’re bringing it home with an 8-race program. #4 Please Marry Me (5-2) and #10 Karen’s Catita (8-1) are the only two coming in here off maiden-breaking wins. The former ran a game race in victory, setting the pace, falling back, and re-rallying for the score. She’s likely to set the pace once again. The latter improved dramatically in her second grass start at Delaware Park with an off-the-pace victory at 25-1. If Please Marry Me falters, Karen’s Catita will be one of the first to engage. #8 Love My Cat (6-1) makes her first start since June 19 and has shown promise on grass. She ran a decent brisnet figure of 67 in her last race, but it was a visually unimpressive performance where she was ninth, albeit against a strong n/w2L field. Still, she has it in her to close for a piece.

RACE 2: MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES AND MARES, 7 FURLONGS

3-2-5-1

#3 Ladra de Fichi (2-1) has hit the board in all six of her starts without a win, rarely a great sign. However, she has improved noticeably in her last few starts, with back-to-back figures of 78 and 79. This daughter of multiple stakes winner Sweet On Smokey had to face Hoodooland last time, an odds-on choice who ran the field off their feet, but it doesn’t look like there’s anyone nearly that menacing in here. #2 M’Lady Thatcher (7-2) exits the same race as Ladra de Fichi and faded to third after showing brief speed. She’s run in the 70s in all five of her starts and is likely to fade behind Ladra de Fichi but hang on to complete the exacta. #5 Smart Eulee (7-2) chased the pace and finished second in a determined effort last time. Her figure of 72 was her best mark in months. Jevian Toledo gets the ride for the first time.

RACE 3: CLAIMING $25,000 (N/W2L), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 5 1/2 FURLONGS (GRASS)

#10 Ghostly Night (12-1) comes in off a maiden-breaking score last out, where she dispatched Gift of Gab in a stretch duel then held off the late challenge of favored Made My Wish. Claudio Gonzalez claimed her out of that race. #9 Senson (5-1) gets back to grass after a few dirt starts, and has run a 77 and a 78 in her last two starts on this surface. She might be able to clear to the front and set the pace. #1 Loving Cup (9-2) drops from the $40,000 n/w2L level and hasn’t run worse than a 68 in three career outings.

RACE 4: CLAIMING $16,000 (CONDITIONED), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/16 MILES

1-5-3-6

#1 Justinthenickoftime (8-5) has declined a bit in form, running an 81 in his last dirt start after grazing the low-90s earlier in the year, and turning in a very dull effort on grass last out. However, he’s switching back to his preferred surface and dropping in class. #5 Dolce Vita (9-2) took advantage of a rail-favoring track in his last start, battling on the pace towards the inside and drawing off to victory. However, there’s not much speed in this race, with his only serious front-end threat coming from a horse who hasn’t raced since April. As such, he could work out a similar trip here. #3 Aftermath (6-1) was pace-compromised in his last start but gets a rider switch to Jeiron Barbosa and races first off the claim by Gerald Brooks. When he got an honest pace to close into two races back, he won going away with an impressive 79.

RACE 5: MAIDEN CLAIMING $20,000, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, 1 MILE (GRASS)

1-3-4-6

#1 Night Boss (5-1) ran a career-best figure of 77 last out, when he closed for second in an oddly run race. A loose leader opened up a big margin and came back to the field, and while Night Boss closed well, he was outkicked by Lukie Dookie, who ran away and hid from them. Nonetheless, Night Boss is in improving form and should run on well here. #3 Grand Manner (6-1) gets back to grass and takes a career-low drop in class after previously racing at the $40,000-$45,000 level. He’s likely to set the early pace and can take them gate-to-wire if allowed to set modest fractions. #4 Solomon’s Choice (3-1) faded late after striking the front last out, but now cuts back from 1 1/16 miles and looks primed for a winning performance.

RACE 6: MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT, 2-YEAR-OLDS, 5 FURLONGS

#6 Johnyz From Albany (3-1) is a first-time starter for trainer Dale Capuano, and an offspring of Monster Sleeping, a two-time Maryland Million Ladies champion. This gray gelding has had a string of sharp four-furlong workouts, with his most recent drill in 48 1/5 seconds. #1 Post Time (2-1) was purchased for $85,000 this spring by Hillwood Stable and now debuts for Brittany Russell. His dam, Vielsalm, won the 2014 All Brandy Stakes and has produced What Does It Take, who earned more than $100,000. Another gray, he’s worked very well recently, including a bullet five-furlong workout on August 7. #5 Johnnyfrenchfri (6-1) showed speed and held on for second in his debut at Penn National and has worked well since. He’ll try to build on that performance here.

RACE 7: ALLOWANCE (N/W1X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS (GRASS)

8-1-10-5

Three of the top four finishers from a Maryland-bred allowance race on August 7 are back here. #8 Tauber (5-2) got the job done that day, in his second start off the layoff. He had to check in the stretch but found a path between horses and got up for the victory. Of the horses, who finished behind him, I was most impressed with #1 Sue Loves Barbados (7-2), who came extremely wide from last and finished in a dead heat for third. He’s run at least an 83 in three of his four races this year. #10 Balistico (5-1) has improved his figure in each of his last three starts, including a sharp win against open claimers at Colonial Downs last out.

RACE 8: MAIDEN CLAIMING $30,000, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES AND MARES, 7 FURLONGS

One more to go, then it’s off to Timonium. #7 Foul Balls (3-1) was parked wide in her last start at this level but held on for second, matching the 67 that she earned in her debut. SARATOGA SPOTLIGHT RACES:

Sixth Race – Post: 3:52 ET
Top Pick: 7-Spelterini (7/2)

There have been a number of tough and competitive juvenile maiden races this meeting (as always) and this one certainly falls into that category. As is our want, we’ll prefer a filly with a prior race over the track when making this daughter of Bernardini our top selection in a race that requires a spread in rolling exotic play. An excellent runner-up from off the pace in her debut last month, she gets an extra furlong to work with today, and an impressive recent breeze since that outing tells us she’s ready to step forward in a big way. Worth noting is that the filly who finished just behind her in that race, Chocolate Gelato, came back to win her next race by a pole. Rarify also has a strong debut race underneath her, a runner-up effort behind the highly regarded Kaling in a hot race last month. The Wesley Ward barn has strong stats with second time starters (22%) and this daughter of Justify gives every indication that she’ll improve a bunch with distance and maturity. Among the newcomers, Rosie’s Alibi might be the most dangerous. She’s done everything asked of her in the morning for Todd Pletcher and is another highly regarded filly by Justify who could easily be this good.

On pure form, this Wesley Ward-trained filly looks like a standout in this year’s renewal of the Bolton Landing Stakes. After breaking her maiden by almost 10 lengths in her debut at Keeneland, she ventured across the pond to finish a highly respectable fourth of 21 in the Queen Mary S.-G2 at Royal Ascot, a performance that if repeated today would bury this group. Freshened since mid-June and training like she’s fit and ready (see below), the Irish-bred daughter of U S Navy Flag is listed at 2-1 on the morning line, and we’d love to get it in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

More Than Ready filly wasn’t ever really asked while inside and slightly second best with Spinzar (same time) and Self Confident (same time, last of the trio), steady splits, fair to moderate under the circumstances (didn’t change leads galloping out into the stretch). Hard to gauge but is bred to run long on the lawn and probably will show her best under those conditions.

Okay move inside Sister Maha (same time) for T. Pletcher, urged a bit through the lane to stay even to the wire before proving slightly best on the gallop out around dogs on turf. Has bit of ability but we’d prefer to see one first.

Under wraps throughout while even outside Occult (same time) for C. Brown, nice and relaxed throughout while able to go considerably quicker if turned loose. Has ability, has an athletic stride, and could be competitive vs. maidens sprinting or routing based on how she’s being trained.

Good-sized daughter of Gun Runner was merely galloping outside Powerful (same time) for S. Asmussen, always in hand in good work before galloping out with energy. Suspect she’ll be best suited over a distance of ground.

Rarify (August 7, Saratoga, 5f, :59.2b TT). Grade: B+
In blinkers, broke off several lengths behind Margaret Burbidge (5f, 1:01.1b TT) and inhaled that one through the lane under mild urging to draw far clear in the final stages, final quarter in :24.3 for Justify filly trained by W. Ward. Was beaten by a good filly when favored in debut but should step forward off that race and be dangerous vs. maidens next time out.

Spelterini (August 12, Saratoga, 4f, :50b). Grade: B+
Under a nice hold throughout inside Milieu (same time) for W. Mott, quite eager and sharp while coming home in :25 flat very easily to prove clearly best. Daughter of Bernardini ran well when second in her debut in a hot race and clearly has come on since that outing. Nice prospect.

Even but best inside Alpha Bella (same time) in gate drill for T. Pletcher, displaying good gate speed while traveling well every step of the way, very nice for juvenile daughter of Justify. Plenty of potential and appears fit and ready.

Even but second best inside Expected Value (same time) for C. Brown, niggled at late and weakening approaching the wire to breezing workmate, final quarter in :25.1. Probably should watch one first.

English invader is fresh off the plane and ready to win right now in this maiden turf miler for juveniles. Technically sporting the highly productive two-sprints-and-a-stretch out angle, the son of Australia exits a pair of hot races that produced Timeform ratings that suggest he will easily outclass this field. A very respectable fourth of five in the Superlative S.-G2 at Newmarket before being purchased private, the Simon Callaghan-trained colt had a nice, easy breeze last week to tick him over and with turf master Umberto Rispoli taking the call this promising colt looks very much like a short price worth taking.


Seventh Race – Post: 5:07 PT
Top Pick: 6-Home Cooking (2-1)

Trainer Bob Baffert holds the aces (as usual) in this maiden special weight sprint for juveniles, with preference on top going to the filly with a prior race under her belt. This daughter of Honor Code got caught in a torrid speed duel in her debut and paid the price late, weakening to finish third as the favorite in a strong affair that should prove highly productive. The blinkers off angle – one of our favorites – is another major plus, so at 2-1 on the morning line she’s a highly logical top selection. Stable mate 3-Muteki makes her first start, and if she runs as well as she trains the daughter of American Pharoah should be highly competitive. Purchased for $1 million at the OBS March sale, she’s plenty quick but can finish, too, and with a trouble-free trip could give ‘Cooking all she can handle. Also worth tossing in somewhere on your ticket is the debuting 9-House of Magic, a $200,000 OBS June sale purchase by Good Magic. She smoked a quarter mile in :20 4/5 during the preview session, so we know she can run.

Curlin filly probably will do her best eventually over a distance of ground.

Definitely has some speed (bred for it), brought $140,000 at the OBS April sale, hard to say if she’s up to beating the monsters she’s likely to face in her debut on this circuit, though.

MATTY'S MARAUDER - Lets try to beat the morning-line choices with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a decent race. True, this thoroughbred is coming off a layoff, but this gelding runs well fresh. 35-76-80 are last 3 Equibase speed figures. Improving each time out is something he should do again right here. Getting a weight break of 7 pounds from last race at Belmont Park on April 28th. Could be helpful in this race.

MARCH TO THE ARCH - This racer obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has registered the highest Equibase speed figure on the turf at the distance-surface. Always be wary of the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. This gelding is in nice physical condition. Finished second on Jul 23rd. SHIRL'S SPEIGHT - Attfield has a very strong win pct in grass routes. This horse should be ready to win. This animal has recorded the best recent turf speed rating at the dist/surf. Took a big class drop last out, and I think he may have needed it. Attfield enters him at a similar class today. I'd expect an improved performance. Another way to judge class is earnings per start. This thoroughbred has the top in the field. I think he'll be close at the finish.

Not in love with laying a short price on the Pirates? Understandable. Allow me to point one thing out, though. Pittsburgh is home and facing Mike Minor.
Minor has made 13 starts for Cincinnati this season. The Reds are 1-12 in those outings. They've lost 10 in a row when Minor has started. The washed-up southpaw has a 6.31 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. He's surrendered 13 runs in his last 18 innings. He has a 5.19 career ERA against the Pirates in six meetings.
The Pirates play better at home where they are 26-32 compared to 21-41 on the road.
Pittsburgh is starting Zach Thompson. He's nearly as bad as Minor with a 5.51 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. However, Thompson has had success against one team - Cincinnati. He has a 2.14 lifetime ERA in 21 career innings against the Reds, including tossing 11 scoreless innings against them this year.

I like the Toronto Blue Jays to win this game against the New York Yankees on Sunday. The Yankees have lost 3 games in a row now but they have looked really bad over the last few weeks and are in the middle of a huge slump at the moment. Their offense has looked terrible in their games but they are also missing a lot of their key players in the lineup to injury and that has been contributing to this bad offense lately. They were bound to start regressing at some point and now that they are, I don't see them getting any better until their lineup starts getting healthier and they get some players back. Alek Manoah (12-6, 2.71 ERA) is up for the Blue Jays here and he has looked really good all year not giving up many runs in his starts. He hasn't looked great lately but I expect him to bounce back here with a better start since he will be motivated to pitch a good game against the Yankees here, and he has looked good against the Yankees in his starts this year since he hasn't given up many runs to them, and that was when their offense was good and their lineup healthy. Nestor Cortes (9-4, 2.74 ERA) is up for the Yankees here and he also hasn't looked great lately giving up some runs in his starts as of late. The Blue Jays offense has been starting to pick up though and I see them putting up runs on Cortes here like they have been putting up runs all weekend in this series, and I don't see the Yankees hanging in there either with their current offense. I like the Blue Jays to win this game.
