Grade I winners Art Collector and Mind Control, multiple graded stakes winner Officiating and 1-1/8-mile Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap winner Last Samurai are among seven entrants in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic this Friday, Aug. 26, at the West Virginia oval. Figure out that $1 million race and you’ll have three accompanying 7F stakes to solve the 50-cent Late Pick 4 puzzle that carries a guaranteed $100,000 pool. Here’s a closer look at the action:

CT 10th race (9:11 EST) -- WONDRWHERECRAIGIS bounced back from an unsuccessful March trip to Dubai for the G-I Golden Shaheen with a runner-up finish in his DeFrancis Dash title defense behind six-time stakes winner Beren. He is reunited with jockey Luis Saez, who was aboard when the 5-year-old gelding went wire-to-wire and posted a lifetime-best 104 Beyer in the G-III Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont Park. The probable odds-on favorite in the $250,000 Russell Road Stakes will be a popular solo play in the Pick 4 despite this being his first start around two turns. SIR ALFRED JAMES, one of three Norm Cash-trained entrants, lost his last four non-graded stakes by a combined 40 lengths, but he reawakened in a big way in a 5-1/2F added-money allowance last out. He powered away from slow-starting favorite Mojovation after the duo drew even for the stretch run and he continued strong on the gallop out, earning a spot on the ticket.

CT 11th race (9:45 EST) -- SOCIETY was unsettled, rank, bumped and taken back when she suffered her first loss in the G-I Coaching Club American Oaks against Nest and Secret Oath, the stars of the sophomore fillies class with four G-I wins and $3.3 million in earnings between them. She raced in-hand on the lead in her win two back, repelled a strong challenge by next-out winner Miss Yearwood and appears well-suited for her first 7F test in the G-III Charles Town Oaks. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen’s ties to the West Virginia Breeders Classics date back to the inaugural running in 1987, when he sent out 2-year-old Rock House to one of the first stakes victories of his long and illustrious career. STELLAR RIDE is worth using at 8-1 on the morning line. She chased the fleet-footed favorite in a triple-key allowance but raced evenly in the lane while Last Leaf rolled past for her fourth consecutive stakes win against fillies. MIDNIGHT STROLL got the jump on deep-closing Shotgun Hottie, a three-time G-III runner-up, and troubled odds-on favorite Morning Matcha in the G-III Delaware Oaks, for her third win at as many distances in four starts this year. DIVINE HUNTRESS, a distant second in a four-horse field against millionaire Matareya, got a break from graded stakes competition and beat an allowance-caliber field by a nose in a restricted stakes race last out.

CT 12th race (10:18 EST) -- Defending champion ART COLLECTOR has won his last six starts in the U.S. at the 1-1/8-mile WV Breeders Classic distance for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. He followed a similar script heading into last year’s race, winning the Alydar Stakes at Saratoga in ‘handy’ fashion. MIND CONTROL won three stakes by a head in his last six starts, including the G-II Jan Nerud and a G-III upset over multiple G-I winner Hot Rod Charlie in the Salvator Mile. He goes 1-1/8 miles for the first time but Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, seeking his third Classic victory, said in published reports that he was encouraged by Mind Control’s longest distance efforts thus far. OFFICIATING sat a perfect trip in the G-III Cornhusker Handicap to win in his first try at this distance. He tracked dueling leaders Fleetridge and Flash of Mischief – who both came back to win – before making his move at the quarter pole. LAST SAMURAI is a proven marathoner but he didn’t fire in the G-II Steven Foster two back and ‘did not have enough in the final stages’ in a minor stakes last out after a long duel with the 2-1 winner.

CT 13th race (10:48 EST) – NO CHANGE is a neck short of a perfect season in six starts around two turns at Charles Town in 2022. But if he doesn’t handle the challenge of a difficult post 10 starting spot, it could be anyone’s race to win in the $75,000 Frank Gall Memorial Stakes. Go deep in the final leg of the Pick 4.

Late Pick 4 … Races 8-11

Race 8: Turf, 1 1/16th, Yaddo H., $200k, F&M 3+, NY Breds

It is time to get the weekend started early, and that means playing some intriguing horizontal wagers like the Late Pick 4 that is all about the New Yorkers! Taking to the Inner Turf, these older females will be looking to pick up a nice “Non-G” prize. There is not a standout in this race, especially when you glance through their form. I am inclined to back Mark Casse’s Make Mischief #6, who might end up being a decent price. Jockey Dylan Davis is coming off “days,” after being suspended for nearly a week, so he should be “itching” to get back to the winner’s circle. His mount, a 4-yr-old daughter of super sire Into Mischief, has the class to compete here, just not the grass experience … she has never run on the stuff in competition. Let’s use this one, but I also like the look of state bred expert Marvelous Maude #7 (Chad Brown), and the well-dressed Ice Princess #1 (Danny Gargan). Including them should help us move along to the next stage …

Race 9: Dirt, 7F, OC45kn2x, 3+, NY Breds

The New York state bred parade continues … albeit at a much lower level. Still, this dirt sprint should be fairly interesting to handicap. I am predicting that a good bit of cash is going to flow towards Chad Brown’s Key Point #3. That is probably deserved after the Jeff Drown-owned colt by Into Mischief posted an eye-catching speed figure last time out at Belmont. He is now moving up in class, and Manny Franco will get the opportunity to ride this one again. I am going to play against Brown, and look for some prices elsewhere within this race. I particularly like both entries that are drawn towards the inside. Todd Pletcher’s Perfect Munnings #1 is just getting her ’22 campaign going. She was excellent last year as a 3-yr-old, and with only one race to her credit so far, she has some major room for improvement. Facing open ALLW Co. more recently, makes me think she can jump back into these state waters. Luis Saez is aggressive and accomplished, so I would not count him out when he gets together with this HOF trainer. The other entry that I quite like, is Christophe Clement’s Listentoyourheart #2. Even though this gelding by Afleet Alex is still looking for his 1st win at The Spa, that doesn’t mean it will not come soon. When Joel Rosario rides for this barn, he can be very dangerous. Cutting back in distance and dropping a horse down from his last race, is a mighty interesting angle. I am hoping that both of these picks remain in the double-digit range, but I would not be surprised if bettors see what I see … and they get hammered at the windows. Here’s hoping …

Race 10: Turf, 1 1/16th, West Point S., $200k, 3+, NY Breds

The stakes action heats up on Friday afternoon with this turf route that is going to be an interesting challenge. I am inclined to keep it simple, and just “Single” Christophe Clement’s City Man #5. The horse by Mucho Macho Man is a deserving favorite, especially when you look at his “wins” over this past year. He is the defending champion, and regular rider Joel Rosario sure knows how to press the pace when it is necessary. If this pair is on their game, then they will be almost impossible to beat. The only other entry that I found that could pose a threat to “City’s” hegemony is Mike Maker’s seasoned, Somelikeitbrown #3. This horse looks a bit sleepy when it comes to form, but he has the ability to get the job done. He likes to get loose on the lead, setting the pace as he goes, and with the right fractions, a race can be his for the taking. Jose Ortiz is not riding up to his normal standards during the Meet, but this is Saratoga … it is tough … very tough. I am hoping Maker’s horse by Big Brown is overlooked on the tote, and that could make him an inviting price. It is time to enter the stretch, and head to the finale.

Here is a finale in which if you had the cash, no one would “talk you off” hitting the “All” button at the window. Out of these 11 runners, if you can find a “Single,” then you are quite the handicapper. Cheers … I am quite partial to Gary Sciacca’s Addicted to You #11, for starters. The gelding by Bellamy Road looks the part, especially when you go back and watch his last 3 races. Flavien Prat just could not make up enough ground in each of those races, and he “Placed” each time. You can interpret that how you wish. I will take it as a sign that he is on the cusp of a breakthrough. The 11-hole is not a great post when you are trying to rate close to the lead, but I trust that Prat will do his best to be quick. Others that warrant a look, include … Todd Pletcher’s Your Mission #9, Greg DiPrima’s Bointheback #6, and finally, David Donk’s On Palm Sunday #2. What a way to end this Late Pick 4 … it is going to be a barnburner!

Race 1 – Seeking the Ante Stakes

1. #5 Miracle (2-1) – Maple Leaf Mel definitely had the better debut, but this could be one to benefit from her getting pressed by others and sitting off the leaders with winning chances

2. #3 Maple Leaf Mel (4-5) – A repeat of her only try with similar fractions and little pressure puts her in the winning circle among this group, but faces more pressure here

3. #2 Les Bon Temps (8-1) – Didn’t finish as strongly in his first stakes effort as he should have, but might’ve just been too close to a quick early quarter which caused him to fade late

4. #1 Song Parody (7-2) – This filly by Practical Joke will likely try and take the lead from Maple Leaf Mel, and may need to do so to have a chance to hit the board

Race 3 – Albany Stakes

1. #1 Price Discipline (7-5) – Might end up favorite over the more accomplished Barese because of the connections, but should be second choice but better suited for this distance

2. #4 Barese (8-5) – Anything over even money seems like good value for this colt who has run against much better than Price Discipline, even if this isn’t his ideal distance

3. #3 Montebello (5-2) – Should clearly be on the early lead in this one, but needs to go a bit further and might not be able to slow the fractions down after a quick start like last time

4. #5 Bossmakinbossmoves (8-1) – Made a nice closing move last time but may prefer a softer track, still one that needs plenty of pace to break down to have a chance here

Race 5 – Fleet Indian Stakes

1. #5 Venti Valentine (9-5) – This filly by Firing Line will get played based on the company she has raced against recently, but probably needs someone to press Fingal’s Cave to win

2. #2 Fingal’s Cave (4-5) – A winner of all three tries convincingly and the distance doesn’t seem to be an issue here, but should face more pressure than last time

3. #1 Let Her Inspire U (4-1) – Has been post-time favorite in all five of her races, and can either try to get the lead here or sit off Fingal’s Cave for a good stalking trip

4. #4 Galaxina (8-1) – Has already won two state-bred stakes races, but maybe a step below some others coming from Finger Lakes and benefitting from slower paces

Race 7 – Funny Cide Stakes

1. #1 Acoustic Avenue (5-2) – Impressive to win by seven in his debut, and should have enough speed to hold off the others early with a chance to go gate to wire

2. #5 Andiamo a Firenze (4-5) – Faded a bit in the Grade III Sanford, but came out of that effort with some sharp workouts and will be a top contender if he vies for the early lead

3. #4 Donegal Surges (4-1) – Won by five lengths first time in a bit slower race than some others at six furlongs, but still gets the edge over the rest based on that trip

4. #2 I’m Wide Awake (8-1) – One that maybe improves with a bit more experience after a tough Sanford effort where he didn’t break sharply, but still needs to get better to win

Race 8 – Yaddo Handicap

1. #6 Make Mischief (9-2) – This one goes dirt to turf for the first time but appears to have some early speed that could be dangerous in here especially if the pace isn’t very fast

2. #7 Marvelous Maude (3-1) – Takes a step up in class but won her only try over this turf course last time and should have the right running style to be a factor here

3. #5 Runaway Rumour (5-1) – This filly by Flintshire hasn’t hit the board since October, but there is reason to believe she will improve enough off the class drop to be in the mix

4. #10 Classic Lady (5-1) – Obviously the post isn’t ideal, but Rosario and Clement should still have this mare in the top grouping as she has been consistent at hitting the board

Race 10 – West Point Stakes

1. #7 Cross Border (9-2) – Hasn’t been his sharpest this year which isn’t a good sign at eight years old, but might get the right set up sitting in third or fourth in a race which could be fast

2. #5 City Man (8-5) – Won this race last year and comes off a career best race in the Grade III Forbidden Apple, and will need a similar effort to be a winner here

3. #3 Somelikeithotbrown (7-2) – May let Jerry the Nipper go early considering the removal of blinkers here, but still a threat with his speed even if he doesn’t hold on late

4. #2 Jerry the Nipper (8-1) – His try first time on turf was extremely sharp, and could be a sign of things to come for this gelding by Liam’s Map who should be good value and has early speed

Alice Springs Turf Club will host a five-race card on Friday, August 26. Northern Territory specialist David White brings you his race-by-race betting preview along with free tips and the best odds available. First race is set to commence 2:55pm local time.
Race 1 (2.55pm) – $17,500 Cummins Euro VI, Ready When You Are 0-54 Handicap (1200m)

Future Dreams had not finished out of a place in his past five starts before a last start fourth over 1200m (0-54) on August 6. It was a disappointing result for the 7YO gelding and although he has since parted ways with the Terry and Leanne Gillett stable is worthy of another chance despite being handed a hefty impost. Future Dreams has been placed 10 times in 19 starts in the Red Centre and the last of his three wins occurred on July 17 over 1200m (0-58). Sweet As Scandi boasts two wins and two thirds in his last five starts and despite jumping from gate 8 has the benefit of a 3kg claim. Kyd Rock has a fabulous record at Pioneer Park (26-7-4-5) and always seems to run well first up after a break. The form of Harbour Express and Debbonaire Boy has certainly fluctuated in recent times, but on their day both can find that special something and therefore cannot be discounted. Hard to see any others making an impact.

White Kaps has had 15 starts in Alice Springs and rarely runs a bad race. You can count the amount of times the 8YO gelding hasn’t finished in the top five on one hand. White Kaps in fact won his first race in the Red Centre following his arrival from South Australia when he won over 1100m (0-64) in October 2020. In the past 13 months, he has basically flopped on just one occasion when he finished 11th over 1000m (0-62) on April 9. Two thirds in May over 1000m (0-58) and 1100m (0-54) were followed by back to back wins over 1000m (0-58) on June 5 and 1100m (0-64) three weeks ago. Like A Heartbeat’s form has been erratic without being disastrous, but he has gone five races without a win after saluting over 1000m (0-70) on June 5 and is backing up from Saturday. Radio Room is also backing from the weekend after coming fourth over 1400m (0-70) and isn’t out of it, but could find the trip a little on the short side. The Amazing Tahlia could perhaps provide the knockout punch despite only racing twice this year.

Star Of Monsoon is no spring chicken, but in the past two years he has made a name for himself in the NT by forging a respectable CV. The 9YO gelding from SA, who has had 66 career starts for seven wins and 26 minor placings, had seven starts in Alice Springs, Darwin and Adelaide River in 2021 and finished in the top four on six occasions – including a win over 1200m (0-70) in the Red Centre. On his second trip north Star Of Monsoon posted a fifth (March) and a ninth (April) in the Alice before exploding back in the Top End. In four starts he managed a win and three seconds before a last start win over 1600m (0-66) on July 30. The handy Fantasy Eagle finally tasted victory in the NT when he won over 1400m (0-70) on Saturday and even though he has a 3kg claim backing up six days later won’t be easy. The ever reliable Mathematics won over 1400m (0-70) two starts ago and is in the mix. Zelring has won three of his past four starts and is certainly a major contender. That’s Justified is a quality horse, but even with a 4kg claim will lump 62.5kg. Exonerate is renowned for springing the upset, but backs up from Saturday.

Tycoons Dior is not only best horse in the race, but she is also the only horse in the eight-horse field who has finished among the place-getters over 1400m. It would border on a monumental upset if the 6YO mare, who was quoted as a $1.20 chance during the week, finally didn’t taste victory in her ninth career start. Tycoons Dior has finished second on three occasions, third on four occasions and fourth on the one occasion, so surely the stars will align and the daughter of Equiano will finally enter the winner’s circle.
She was third in a 1400m maiden on June 19 before contesting two 1200m maidens on July 17 (third) and August 6 (second). Without being vindictive, it’s hard to settle on a rival capable of upsetting Tycoons Dior. Perhaps it’s Toguchi, who had been going through the motions before a last start fourth in that 1200m maiden on August 6. Mi Mijo, Abreha and Counterinteligence are arguably the best of the rest.

Sedona had a pretty rough start to his Alice Springs when he arrived from Darwin via Katherine and Cloncurry, but since then he hasn’t missed a beat. The 6YO gelding, who was highly competitive in the Top End throughout 2021, finally clicked into gear in the Red Centre in April with a second (1100m) and a first (1200m) at 0-58 level. A second over 1450m (0-64) at Tennant Creek was followed by a win over 1100m (0-64) on June 19, a fourth over 1200m (0-69) and a last start win over 1200m (0-64) on July 24. Sedona has since left the Phil Cole stable, but if he brings his best to the table he will take some stopping. In what should prove to be a highly competitive race the likes of Intercontinental, Liberty Blue, Bartolini, Me Cabo and Travanti are all last start winners. Intercontinental and Liberty Blue are backing up from Saturday, but they could not have been more impressive. Me Cabo and Travanti have had three weeks to prepare for the race, while Bartolini has been cooling his heels for the past month after winning three straight. Colhoun hadn’t done much wrong since March before losing his way in his last two appearances.

Listed racing heads to the Gold Coast Turf Club on Friday with the $150,000 Goldmarket Handicap (1200m) headlining the nine-race metropolitan program. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie numbers for the program, which kicks off at 11:41am AEST. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course.
Goldmarket Best Bet – Wisdom Of Water

Wisdom Of Water has raced only once since his win in the Magic Millions QTIS Open (1300m) in January, but that looks to be a deliberate move. The Annabel Neasham-trained entire was brilliant when winning at this track back in January, defeating Boomnova by 1.25 lengths over 1300m. The son of Headwater loves racing on the Gold Coast, with four wins and a third coming from just six starts at the track, so he should relish getting back there on Friday. He looked airborne in a recent barrier trial at Randwick over 742m and he tends to fly when fresh. With in-form jockey Brodie Loy in the saddle, we are tipping this horse to be too classy for his rivals at his favourite track. We have plenty of respect for Munitions also.

Eight-year-old gelding Seat Of Power hasn’t won for a little while, but he does love racing at the Gold Coast with two wins from four starts at the track. The son of Sea The Stars finished second last time out at Eagle Farm over 2200m behind Barade, but he importantly meets that galloper 2kg better here over 2400m. From barrier eight, James Orman will stride forward on Seat Of Power, controlling the race from in front and skipping clear on the turn. He is now rock-hard fit and ready to win.

Boom galloper Manhood should be able to bounce back on Friday following a narrow defeat at Doomben on August 6 in his first Saturday metropolitan run. The Annabel Neasham-trained four-year-old had won his two starts prior by a combined 7.3 lengths, so he was understandably a very short favourite on that occasion, but after being taken on early out in front, he just tired late. Neasham has opted to apply the Blinkers for the first time here as well as a tongue tie, so he should relax nicely in this race. While he does go from 52.5kg to 61kg, he drops right back to Benchmark 68 company which he will find easier. He can lead throughout and win again.

Danny Bougoure has found a new home on the Gold Coast, so local galloper Indiscreetly can get her first win at her new home track. The talented four-year-old mare won her first three starts, before failing to beat a runner home in the $2M Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in January. She didn’t race then until June in the T.L. Cooney Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich where she ran a good second, and then fading to run sixth in the Group 3 Winx Guineas (1600m) most recently on July 2. She comes right back in grade on Friday, steps back to 1350m and trialled nicely on Monday to suggest a forward showing.

It has been hard to lead throughout at Pakenham, so looking for runners who will settle off the speed could be the key to making profit for the meeting. Having finished second at both starts this campaign, the Mike Moroney-trained Poiema looks a clear best bet on the Pakenham card. The three-year-old was a good thing beaten last time out when running into more traffic than peak hour in Sydney in the home straight. The Territories filly has taken a liking to the Ballarat synthetic, and despite this being her first go on the Pakenham all-weather track, she looks like a horse that will handle the conditions with aplomb. From barrier 13, look for the in-form Blaike McDougall to have Poiema settled in the moving line with cover, where he can then let the filly build through her gears under her own steam. She is armed with a nice turn of foot and, with a bit of luck, should have a bit too much polish for the rest of her rivals.

In the final race of the day, the Ben & JD Hayes-trained The Ballet Dancer will be pushing to make it three wins from as many starts at the Pakenham synthetic 1600m. The four-year-old mare has been low-flying in recent times on the synthetic having won her last two at this track and trip, while she placed at 1400m on this track three starts back. She has been one that has countered the theory of on-pace runners struggling on this surface, doing so last start when settling second and holding a one-length margin on the winning post. From barrier 14, Robbie Downey should be looking to have her settled in a similar spot this time around. The son of Sooboog chased home Nice For What on debut when beaten by two lengths and then had plenty of excuses at his second start when travelling wide the trip while racing up on speed. From barrier 15, Jackie Beriman will look to have Treotto settled either outside the leader or in the one-one, and if she is able to gain that cover, a win is not out of the question. Treotto showed at the trials that he could be a horse who can work his way through the grades this campaign.

RACE 6: PATRIA (#2)

I’m not thrilled with most of the short prices in this New York-bred N1X allowance. Lisa’s Vision (#7) would be the one that I would consider strongly, since she should appreciate the cutback in distance after failing to handle the stretch-out last time. She ran well enough to break her maiden two back and is dangerous with a repeat of that performance. She just figures to take money with Irad Ortiz getting aboard. I’m less interested in U Should B Dancing (#10), who got a fantastic pace setup when she won against a weaker field last time. I feel the same way about Tis a Pity (#9), who had no excuse not to get up for the win in her most recent start. The winner got much wider trip and ran a better race. I also think the longshot pacesetter of that July 29 affair is very interesting as she makes her second turf start. Patria (#2) was dismissed at 41-1 that day despite possessing some hidden turf pedigree. She blasted out of the starting gate and led for much of the way before just getting run down on the wire. She still earned a 104 TimeformUS Speed figure, which is one of the best numbers in this field. I like her chances to take them a bit farther this time now that she’s running on the Mellon course with the temporary rails down. The other horse I want to use is Aunt Virginia (#4), who has run well in both starts and figures to get a good stalking trip from her inside post.

RACE 7: ACOUSTIC AVE. (#1)

Andiamo a Firenze (#5), the younger three-quarter brother to Grade 1 winner Firenze Fire figures to go off as a heavy favorite in this Funny Cide. He was rumored to be a good one on debut and did not disappoint, blasting out of the gate to establish command before sailing clear in the stretch under minimal urging. He got a real class test when thrown in a tough spot in the Grade 3 Sanford and put in another fine effort. He sat just off a solid pace and simply got leg weary in the final furlong. My problem is that I don’t love the stretch-out in distance for him, especially in a race that appears to feature plenty of other speed. Some may try to pick him up late with the closer Donegal Surges (#4), but that debut winner needs to get significantly faster in his second start. I’m most interested in Acoustic Ave. (#1) as the alternative to the favorite. He’s another who took plenty of money on debut and delivered, setting a fast pace before drawing off through the lane. He earned a 92 TimeformUS Speed Figure for that performance, upgraded a bit due to the fast pace. That’s comparable with what the favorite has accomplished, and I think this guy is more likely to take a step forward. He’s been working that way, besting stablemate Song Parody (Race 1 today) in his recent drills for this. This owner/trainer combination has won this race with the likes of Senbei and City Man in recent years, and I think they may have another Funny Cide winner in the barn after Friday.

RACE 9: ADVANCED STRATEGY (#5)

I’m hardly against likely favorite Key Point (#3), who is clearly the horse to beat in this N2X optional claimer for the New York-breds. He’s earned superior speed figures in his last couple of starts and will be tough to beat if able to maintain that form in his return from a 3-month layoff. While he did ultimately win by over 6 lengths last time, he had to be asked a long way from home to get into gear and only drew off after pressure had been applied for well over a furlong. He figures to take plenty of money due to the fact that he worked with Allen Jerkens favorite Jack Christopher last week, and I think there are some others to consider at bigger prices. Who Hoo That’s Me (#7) makes some sense off his recent N1X victory. He got a good trip, but drew away with authority through the lane and feels like one that will love this 7-furlong distance. There’s pace in this race to set up his late run. Yet I also think that will benefit my top pick. Advanced Strategy (#5) looks like a turf horse at first glance, but I actually think his dirt form makes him competitive here. He faced some good dirt horses in maiden and allowance races earlier in his career, and ran particularly well on dirt at Aqueduct in early 2021. His last dirt race on Feb. 13 is a lot better than it looks, as he was rallying wide against a gold rail that day in a race where the top two finishers were inside throughout. His performance off the layoff in the Kingston shows that he can still put forth a good effort, and I like him getting back to dirt in a spot where he figures to get somewhat ignored in the wagering.

I like the way this matchup sets up for the Padres as they send Joe Musgrove to the hill against Kris Bubic of the Royals on Friday.
Musgrove is having a terrific season, recording a 3.39 FIP and 1.01 WHIP while holding the opposition to only 3.17 runs per nine innings. Behind him is a Padres bullpen that has rounded nicely into form, posting a collective 1.96 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over the last seven games.
We’ve picked on (NOT bet on) Bubic often this season and rightfully so as he has struggled, logging a 4.62 FIP and 1.65 WHIP while allowing just shy of 6.0 runs per nine innings. While the Padres haven't necessarily thrived against left-handed starting pitching this season, it hasn't really matter who they've faced away from home, averaging 4.8 runs per game - well north of their 4.3 rpg season scoring average.
The Royals bullpen has been a disaster lately, sporting a collective 6.23 ERA and 1.54 WHIP over the last seven contests. Take San Diego.

I like the Chicago Cubs to win this game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. The Cubs just played a tough series with the red hot Cardinals but they managed to take 2/5 games in that series, but the Cubs looked really good going into that series and I expect them to continue playing well here. The Brewers haven't looked great in their games lately, losing their 2 most recent series, 1 of those being a series to the Cubs just last week. Justin Steele (4-7, 3.25 ERA) is up for the Cubs here and he has looked great in his starts lately. He has made 6 starts in a row now where he has given up 2 runs or less, and he has also given up just 1 run or less in his 2 most recent starts against the Brewers. He has looked great for a while now and I expect him to shut down the Brewers lineup again here, which hasn't been great anyway. Freddy Peralta (4-3, 4.08 ERA) is up for the Brewers here and he hasn't looked bad in his starts lately but he has been giving up a ton of runs in his starts all year and I think he has more liability in this game with the way he has pitched this year. I expect the Cubs to put up runs here and stay hot. I like the Cubs to win this game.

The Braves (-137) are worth a look as a decently priced road favorite against the Cardinals in Friday's MLB action. Both these teams come in playing great baseball. I just have a lot more trust in the Atlanta offense, especially in this pitching matchup with the Cardinals sending out Jose Quintana. While Quintana has had a nice 2022 season, he's fading a bit of late with a 3.95 ERA and 1.829 WHIP in his last 3 starts. Braves will have Spencer Strider on the mound, who has a 3.42 ERA and 1.022 WHIP in 15 starts. Strider faced these Cardinals back on July 7th and held them to just 2 hits over 6 scoreless innings. Play the Braves -137!

Las Vegas held Miami to only six first-half points after holding Minnesota to six points in their previous preseason game two weeks ago — but they have then failed to cover the point spread in 10 of their last 13 preseason games after not allowing more than seven preseason points in the first-half of their last two preseason games. New England (1-1) comes off a 20-10 win at home against Carolina as a 6-point favorite on Friday — and they have then covered the point spread in 13 of their last 20 preseason games after a win at home in their previous preseason game. I have great respect for Sane Bieber. However, I'm not going to turn down this price on the home underdog Mariners.
Seattle is 31-13 (70 percent) the past 44 times when facing a righty starter. The Guardians are 0-4 in their last four contests against Seattle.
Bieber is 1-2 with a 3.75 ERA in four career starts versus the Mariners.
Logan Gilbert is 10-5 with a 3.52 ERA. He hasn't pitched as well during his last eight starts as he was earlier in the season. However, half of those outings were against the powerful Astros and Yankees. This is a step down in class for Gilbert. The Guardians rank 16th in runs and 29th in homers.
Gilbert is backed by a bullpen that is 51-0 when leading going into the final two innings. That's the best in the majors.

Cleveland began a new era in 2022 (no longer the Indians, now the Guardians). Cleveland lost to the Cubs in the 2016 World Series (led 3-1, before losing the final three games) and followed with THREE more postseason appearances in the next four years (exception was in 2019 when the team won 93 games). However, Cleveland would go just 80-82 in 2021. Seattle finished second in the American League West in 2021 with a 90-72 record, just TWO games out of a wild-card berth. That extended Seattle's postseason drought to 20 years, as the Mariners last made the playoffs back in 2001. The Guardians and Mariners opened a four-game series in Seattle Thursday afternoon with BOTH teams squarely in the postseason 'picture.' Cleveland had won 12 of 16 games and at 66-56, owned a four-game lead in the AL Central over the Twins and White Sox. The Mariners were headed 'nowhere' with a 29-39 record through June 19 but then went 22-3 to close the first half to reach 51-42. The Mariners were only 16-15 since returning from the break but at 67-57, owned the AL's No. 3 wild card spot. They are just 1 1/2-games behind the No. 1 wild card team and 2 1/2-games ahead of the Orioles, who represent the 'last team out" (No. 4 among wild card contenders).
Cleveland and Seattle met for the first time this season last night but it's just the beginning of the teams playing SEVEN games against each other in an 11-day span. Seattle opened the series with a 3-1 win. Friday's game will feature Shane Bieber (8-7, 3.10 ERA) of Cleveland against the Mariners' Logan Gilbert (10-5, 3.52 ERA). The Indians are 15-8 in Bieber's 2022 starts, while the Mariners have gone 15-10 Gilbert's starts. That comes after a 2021 season in which the Mariners went 16-8 in his 24 starts. I had Seattle last night but will take Cleveland tonight, as Bieber owns a 1.71 ERA in his four August starts, while Gilbert owns an 'ugly' 7.87 ERA in his four August starts.
