A massive day of racing awaits punters on Thursday afternoon at Geelong, where a 10-race program is set down for decision. We expect to be starting on a Soft 6 or 7, although a showery forecast for Thursday morning could push the track into the Heavy range. The rail comes out to the 6m mark for the meeting, and while that could favour on-speed runners early in the piece, we expect a number of horses will be making their impact out wide as the day goes on. The first race is scheduled to go at 12:30pm AEST.
Best Bet at Geelong – Miss Subtly

The Grahame Begg-trained Miss Subtly may just be the best maiden going around in Victoria, but on Thursday we expect her fortune to change when she breaks through at start four. The three-year-old filly has begun her career with three consecutive runner-up performances, including a narrow defeat to Cap D’antibes Stakes winner Nanagui two starts back at this track and trip. She backed up that effort with a similarly narrow defeat to Clarity at Moonee Valley on August 20. This is by far her easiest assignment, and a repeat effort of her last two starts would make her hard to beat. From barrier 10, look for Jordan Childs to have her leading the field up. If it is advantageous to be up on speed early on at Geelong, Miss Subtly will look to make the most of it.

Next Best at Geelong – Thalursian

Carloline Jennings & Damien Oliver will be out to build on the already impressive beginning to Thalursian’s career when he returns to the Geelong 1300m (1325m). The four-year-old gelding won at this track and trip on July 1 when gaining a gun run in transit and looked to have plenty left in the tank when going on to post a two-length victory. He then had seven weeks between runs when finishing third, beaten a half-length at Bendigo over 1100m in an effort which screamed out he will be hard to beat next start over further. Damien Oliver sticks on board which is a massive plus and from barrier five, look for the GOAT to have this bloke settled in the one-one. When asked for an effort, Thalursian should have a bit on this lot and looks to be one of the better bets at Geelong.

Shawn Mathrick sends Rolling Moss to the Geelong 1125m on Thursday in the last event and he looks to present great value based on recent form. The nine-year-old gelding was beaten two-lengths by the progressive La Zucca at Mornington and with a serviceable wet track record (47: 9-4-7), he looks the one to be with in the last. He will give us a sight for our money out in front and with Kiran Quilty on board and claiming 2kg, he gets in with just 59.5kg. With a cheap sectional or two, Rolling Moss will be rolling along out in front and could prove too hard to hold out.

Race 8: Claiming

#6 Hometown takes a big drop in class for this race today, while also running second off of the layoff, which could lead to an improved effort. #8 Money Supply takes a similar drop in class after a few recent struggles at the allowance level at Churchill Downs and Saratoga.

Race 9: Allowance

#5 Truancy was a sharp maiden special weight winner last time out at Saratoga by multiple lengths. She looks ready for the next step up the ladder today. #2 Mia Bea Star has experience against allowance runners, which does give her an advantage over our top pick.

Race 10: Maiden Claiming

#5 Rugged Union moves to a different barn today after a couple of decent efforts over the turf at this class level. This field is fairly weak on paper compared to those last two races. #1 Smart Joker cuts back in distance for this race, which looks to be needed after two poor efforts going long on the turf.

RACE 4: SHUTTERS (#7)

There is little speed signed on in this New York-bred optional claimer, and that figures to help the cause of Ruse (#3), who looks to get back to the winner’s circle after finishing second in 4 of his last 5 starts. He actually ran quite well despite finishing sixth at this level two back, making the first move into a fast pace while racing 3-wide throughout. He looked like a winner in deep stretch last time, but was unable to hold off the late charge of today’s rival Ghost Giant. He’s the one to catch, and I prefer him to the other horses who have been competing at this level. That includes Grape Nuts Warrior (#1), who benefited from the honest pace when he finished ahead of Ruse on July 15 at Saratoga. He has plenty of races that make him competitive here, and he won over this course last year. I just didn’t want to take him as a potential favorite. I prefer the other Chad Brown runner Shutters (#7). This 4-year-old is stepping up to the N2X level for the first time after winning off the layoff last time at Saratoga. That was his first try against winners, and his first start as a new gelding. He won convincingly despite having some issues during the running. He was off a bit slowly and got rank heading into the clubhouse turn. He continued to race wide for much of his trip and was only able to pull off the victory due to his impressive late kick. He comes into this race still with upside, and can beat this field if able to deliver a more professional performance.

RACE 6: ORANGE FREEZE (#8)

A few contenders in this New York-bred maiden event exit the Aug. 3 race won by Lady Jasmine. Smokie Eyes (#7)closed decently to be second that day, but she never looked to be a serious threat to the winner. It was a decent performance, but she didn’t exactly run to her tote support and likely has to do better to beat what appears to be a tougher field this time. I’m more inclined to take Collaboration (#3) from that affair. She arguably had the easier trip, setting a moderate pace. However, she was going out for a barn that rarely has its first time starters ready to win on debut. This daughter of English Channel seems like a candidate to improve second time out, and her early speed should play well from this inside draw. The most interesting runner from that Aug. 3 affair may be Sweetest Princess (#4), who was off very slowly after lunging at the start. She didn’t do much running after that, but she was somewhat compromised by race flow. This daughter of Cairo Prince has a right to improve and figures to be the best price of the contenders. My top pick is Christophe Clement’s other runner Orange Freeze (#8), who exits a different race. She was no match for runaway winner Recognize on debut, but that rival basically stole the race on the front end while riding the advantageous rail path. Orange Freeze was inside early, but she angled off the rail about midway through the race, and angled widest of all on the far turn to launch her rally. She actually closed well to just miss second considering the overall race flow. She was flattered when Recognize returned to finish a good third in the P. G. Johnson next time out. I expect Orange Freeze to do better with that start under her belt and won’t be surprised if she shows a bit more early speed this time.

RACE 7: JOIN THE DOTS (#4)

I expect Mrs. Green (#3) to attract support as she steps up to face winners for the first time. It took this expensive filly a few tries to break out of the maiden ranks, but she registered her first victory in decisive fashion last month at Saratoga, earning a strong 108 TimeformUS Speed Figure. A repeat of that performance makes her competitive against this group, but the waters are getting a little deeper. Tuscan Queen (#1) makes plenty of sense after rallying for third at this level last time out. That was a reasonably fast race for this condition, and she was finishing best of all after being reserved early. She appears to be back in solid form after a bit of a rough patch dating back to last year, and is logical in this spot. Yet I’m most interested in a couple of fillies who are new to turf sprinting. One of those is Icy Stare Down (#9), who is actually making her turf debut. I find it meaningful that Brad Cox has shipped this filly from Churchill Downs, where there is no turf racing, to New York to get on this surface. While she did start out her career as a promising dirt sprinter, she has enough pedigree to handle grass and looks like one that could handle the transition. My top pick is Join the Dots (#4). This filly tried turf for the first time in her most recent start, going a two-turn mile at Saratoga. I believe she showed some affinity for grass despite failing to hit the board. She was a bit too rank early and proceeded to race wide around both turns. According to Trakus, she covered 40 more feet than the winner and 66 more feet than the runner-up. I don’t mind the turnback in distance for her, since she did win her debut sprinting and seemed to travel so keenly in her turf race. She had trained very well on turf prior to that last start, and I think she deserves another chance.

L.A. Chargers at Kansas City: The Chargers grinded out a 24-19 win against the Las Vegas Raiders last week at SoFi Stadium as the UNDER comfortably covered. The Chargers, who were an offensive machine last season at times, managed just 76 rushing yards on 31 carries while posting 279 yards through the air. The defense did a good job against the Cards in the 44-21 win, with 14 of the points allowed coming in the fourth quarter.

Last season, the OVER cashed in the mid-December meeting between these teams in Los Angeles, while the UNDER narrowly cashed in the late September meeting in Arrowhead. The OVER is 3-1 in the past four meetings in Kansas City, though, and we had a total of 54 points last season against a number of 55, so it wasn't exactly a defensive slog.

The Bolts have cashed the OVER in four of their final five road games in 2021. The OVER is also 8-1 in the past nine overall for the Chiefs dating back to last season, while hitting in four of the past five as a home favorite, four of the past five against the AFC West and 18 of the past 25 in the month of September.

(5) Lupo’s Legacy made his debut at Saratoga on the turf and moves to the main track which is a 32% winning move for Jeremiah Englehart. (1) Sul Pharoah tried the turf at Saratoga for Bill Mott and goes back to the dirt in his third start following a layoff.
6th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (10) Sweet Blush (A) had pre-race gate issues in her Saratoga debut, then broke slowly, made a strong middle move, and finished fourth at odds of 7-2. Let’s go to Arrowhead Stadium for the NFL Thursday night contest between the Chargers and the Chiefs. Both teams looked very good in their season openers, both earning wins and more importantly, covers. There is no questioning that Kansas City is once again a team to be reckoned with. However last week in their 44-21 victory over Arizona, I did see their defense spring some leaks late in the game. I’m not gonna’ get into a debate on maybe they took their foot off the gas folks. Their “D” still sprang some leaks. Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert impressed me very much. He connected early and often with some of the new faces on the offense. That tells me this team has meshed already. To me that is huge. I know they will be without Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen. But they are chock-full of talent on the receiving core, guys. I’m not looking to put down the Chiefs folks, not at all. But I do like the way the Chargers stop-unit matches up here. I believe they’re a little quicker on their defensive line. And they will pressure Patrick Mahomes to force some plays. The last few years when this happens, he has been known to make some mistakes. Both teams are very good against the spread there’s no arguing that fact either. But the Chargers are 3-1 ATS the last four versus the Chiefs and 3-0-1 ATS the last four meetings in Kansas City. Let’s not forget in the division they are also 7-3 against the spread the last 10 and are quick moneymakers, going 6-2 against the spread the last eight in the month of September. I really think they could win the game outright. But getting more than a field goal here is a gift. Let’s go L.A. tonight folks. Thank you.

The Padres have won 8 of their last 11 games after allowing five or more runs in their last game. They have also won 6 of their last 7 road games against teams with a losing record. Arizona (67-75) snapped a two-game losing streak with their 5-3 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday. But the Diamondbacks have lost 4 in a row after scoring at least five runs in their last game.
