1st: #3 SONNET – daughter of English Channel tries Tapeta for the first time while dropping way down in class. She should love the distance here for Tim Hamm, who wins 19% first time against claiming company and 23% when he rides Ron Allen, Jr.

2nd: #2 TALES OF MAKENNA – ran well on the turf going two turns at Saratoga against much better company and ships here while dropping way down. Linda Rice wins 31% with this move and 19% second start off the layoff. Pablo Morales picks up the mount.

3rd: #6 HALF BIRTHDAY – was a decent third last out in her Tapeta debut against this conditioned claiming level.
Race Three:

1st: #4 AULT – horse for the course raced evenly from post 10 two starts back, then just missed from a better post when he showed better gate speed. Shelly Radosevich wins 18% with her overall claimers and 16% with her synthetic-track starters.

2nd: #5 ADIOS BOBBY – has just killed it here in his last four starts, winning the last three. As long as he doesn’t get claimed, he’ll keep meeting these and can use his gate speed to advantage. Erin Walker does great with horses that have strong pace.

3rd: #3 MY FRIEND FRANK – won two in a row on the turf at Penn National, then came back and ran second there last out.
Race Four:

1st: #6 COLONEL POPPY – son of the speedy Speightster has made all three of his career starts here. He was beaten at 17-10 two starts back then was an even third last out. Matt Kintz wins 22% with his maiden special weight starters.

2nd: #8 WHISKEYMAC – rushed up into contention when he broke a step slow and faded late in his well-bet career debut. Graham Motion wins 17% with his second-time starters and with his overall synthetic-track starters.

3rd: #7 WILLIE WANDO – has had four chances to graduate and draws better where he can stalk the pace.
Race Five:

1st: #6 A WISH FOR TRISH – broke her maiden to start the season back in April on the dirt at Finger Lakes, then was soundly beaten in her next four starts. She shipped here last out and almost went gate to wire and will be tough if she breaks alertly.

2nd: #2 MAMA LONGLEGS – broke her maiden in her 32nd try here when she went gate to wire. That was the lowest class level she ever faced and she meets low-level company here for Maria Bowersock, who wins 17% first start after a maiden win.

3rd: #1 CANCAN SAREE – just missed going six furlongs two starts back then raced evenly last out.
Race Six:

1st: #7 WATCHOUTFORWEAVER – didn’t show much in his first three career starts, then almost went gate to wire going a mile here last out at 23-1 odds. Cassondra Weaver wins 25% with her overall synthetic-track starters and 15% against this maiden level.

2nd: #8 DR. HYDE – showed little in his first two career starts but then woke up at 21-1 last out when he was a game third behind the top choice. Keith Dickey wins 19% with his synthetic-track starters and his last 91 show a flat-bet profit.

3rd: #5 FURIOUSLY – was an even fourth in his career debut going this distance on the turf for Graham Motion.
Race Seven:

1st: #5 AEGONTHECONQUEROR – was a game second two starts back here, then returned and went gate to wire against state-bred maidens. He draws perfectly to stalk or set the pace going into the turn and picks up Alexis Valdes.

2nd: #7 COMMODORE BARRY – began the year with two poor turf sprints at Colonial Downs, then came here and was a good third. He beat open company $25K claimers last out in fast time for Tom Cooper, who wins 23% first start after a win.

3rd: #6 SHOOT YOUR CUFFS – has been stuck at this state-bred allowance level all year so I can’t put him any higher.
Race Eight:

1st: #3 SAMURAI ZIP – one of the ultimate horse for the course here goes for win number 22 at the track. He had been racing against two classes better before dropping down to this level and missing by a neck. The 12-year-old son of First Samurai draws well today.

2nd: #2 NOTACATBUTACARD – beat this class level three starts back, then raced evenly in fast time when moved up. He missed by three lengths last out as the 5-2 lukewarm favorite for Mark Hoffman, who wins 21% first start after being beaten as the favorite.

3rd: #1 STRETCH RUNNER – has won four of nine starts here and should improve second start off the layoff.

First Race 1:30pm AEST

Visit Ladbrokes

Echuca Racecourse will host an eight-race card on Tuesday as the solitary Victorian meeting for the day. The track is currently rated a Soft 7, but with good weather in the lead up to the meeting, we expect an upgrade before raceday. The rail will be in the true position for the entire circuit, with the first race jumping at 1:30pm AEST.
Echuca Best Bet: Greece

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Greece has only been before the starter once in her short career, in a Group 2 Reisling Stakes where she finished last by 11 lengths. After her debut race, this daughter of I Am Invincible has been spelled for six months and she now lines up in a $27,000 three-year-old fillies maiden that looks to be a relatively easy kill. This girl contested a jump-out at Cranbourne on September 12 where she was hard held for the entirety of the 800m trial, even though she led and won the trial very easily, suggesting this filly is well above average.

Next Best Bet at Echuca: Nasdana

Nasdana will line up in her third start in a row at Echuca, in a Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1200m. The Matthew Ellerton-trained four-year-old broke her maiden two starts back over the 1200m on a Heavy track before finishing second at her most recent run over the same distance on another Heavy track. Daniel Moor will take the ride on this daughter of Not A Single Doubt and it looks as though she will enjoy a firmer track, although we do expect the track to be rated in the Soft range. If Moor can have this girl in the three-wide running line and be within a couple of lengths of the leaders around the bend, she should be too strong in the straight.

Best Value Bet at Echuca: Toojay

Our best value runner for the Echuca card comes up in race six with the Nathan Hobson-trained Toojay in a Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1000m. This son of Kaphero only finished behind one at his last start who also lines up in this race in Burning The Clock, and that horse has copped a 2kg penalty for that win. Given that this seven-year-old gelding has only been given an extra half a kilogram and is nearly double the price of his toughest rival, we believe that he is a good bet at the $12 quote with Palmerbet.

Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 27th September 2022
by Racing and Sports

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for September 27.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Grafton, Echuca and Yeppoon.

GRAFTON: RACE 8 @ 4:40 PM

EASIER SAID (9) won this trip at the Gold Coast in Maidens and followed beaten 2L at the Sunshine Coast in a 58. She races handy and is well-placed to take this out. LETMELETGO (4) found the grade too tough at Eagle Farm but the Lismore placing prior was good and the on-pacer will be right in it at this level. I'MTIMMYZOU (3) was a big Maiden winner at the mile and keeps the small claim. Will skip over and race handy and is a chance to repeat. FULL OF FLAVOUR (2) next best.
SELECTIONS: Backing Easier Said.

YEPPOON: RACE 3 @ 2:35 PM

OSLEN (2) has just been beaten his last two with the latest here. Peaks now with a gear addition and can go one better. CAERUS (1) is a former Kiwi resuming for the new barn. He has the rail and has been gelded. Has shown enough to take seriously and the booking of the red-hot Butler is a lead. AIR LIFTED (4) missed a lip at Townsville spiking his figures. Draws out but is a player benefiting from the 3kg claim. SMART RUBICK (7) runs along and will find this easier than Eagle Farm. Fitter and won't be far away.
SELECTIONS: Going with Olsen in a good contest.

ECHUCA: RACE 2 @ 2:00 PM

Tricky race with plenty of first starters engaged and plenty of scratchings. KURONEKO (7) has a fitness edge over most of these and can lift on latest effort when on the speed before tiring to run fifth over this trip at Ballarat Synthetic on August 19. Blinkers on should do the trick. Keep safe. CASCAIS (2) is a three-year-old filly by Good Journey from the David Brideoake stable on debut today. No trial form but inside gate a big plus. ATOMIQUE (1) is second-up today. Will come on from that run and is among the better hopes. Value at odds.
SELECTIONS: Kuroneko each-way.

The Walker Group Picks

# 4 JERICHO EXPRESS 5/2

# 6 HOBNOBIN GENERAL 7/2

# 3 GRAND IN BAY 5/1

My pick here is JERICHO EXPRESS. Demonstrates the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 69 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the best in this group of horses. Always good to invest in a trainer with this kind of competitive win percentage - 17 percent - at this distance & surface. With Ramos uptop him, this gelding will almost certainly be able to break out early for this event. HOBNOBIN GENERAL - Will probably come out very strong - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the lead recently. Garnered a strong Equibase speed fig last time out. GRAND IN BAY - His 57 average has this colt with among the best Equibase Speed Figures for this event. With a sound jockey who has won at a very good 16 percent rate over the last 30 days. This has to be one of the top selections.

#4 DETANGLER (ML=7/2)
#3 DON'T DARE ME (ML=9/5)
#6 CATHMOR (ML=5/2)

DETANGLER - Gelding hasn't won in his last three starts, but his last win came on May 16th at today's class and distance. You'll be generating money right and left by turning your cash onto this jockey/trainer combination. I have to believe Rojas is making a good move here. This gelding can only benefit from the shorter trip. DON'T DARE ME - Have to give this gelding a shot. Ran a sharp contest last out within the last thirty days. This jock/trainer duo has been producing a high win pct, right around 36. I like the fact that this gelding's last speed rating, 81, is tops in this group. Last time around the track, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. A good sign he can close well, and should be right there at the end in this race. CATHMOR - This rider and handler's horses have been generating a profitable ROI. This gelding is in fine condition, having run a strong race on September 14th, finishing second. Last out, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. That indicates to me he can close well, and should be right there at the finish today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SPECIAL STORY (ML=6/1), #1 WORBOTHOR (ML=6/1), #2 GOLD FELLOW (ML=8/1),

SPECIAL STORY - Tough to wager on at 6/1 odds after the two most recent showings. Mediocre speed figure in the last race at Finger Lakes at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this racer will improve too much in today's race. WORBOTHOR - Hard to take this mount at this price after the finish position (sixth) in the last event. GOLD FELLOW - The third place finish in the last race was not the best. Will be tough for this thoroughbred to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - DETANGLER - Class rating today of 84. Taking a big decrease in the level of competition and should wake up against a softer field. Worth a wager.

# 5 CORA 20/1

# 11 MOMMA CARRIE 4/1

# 3 PACENZA 10/1

CORA is my selection and is a very strong value wager given the line. Don't overlook this mare in your wagers - very dangerous with Mailhot aboard. The average class fig of 59 makes this one tough to beat. Loescher is very serious with this one, wheeling her back quickly. MOMMA CARRIE - The average Equibase class figure alone makes this horse a solid contender. Is worth considering and may be a wager - strong Equibase Speed Figures (63 average) at today's distance and surface lately. PACENZA - Has been running admirably lately and will probably be up near the front end early on. Exhibits the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 63 speed figure which is one of the top in this group of horses.

#6 HUNTER JUMPER (ML=7/2)

HUNTER JUMPER - This rider and handler have a high winning percent together. Ran in the last race against a higher rated class of horses at Mountaineer Park. The move down the class ladder should suit him well. I believe the addition of the 'shades' today will help this gelding focus his attention on racing.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 CONNECTED (ML=3/1), #3 JOE GONZALEZ (ML=4/1), #4 GALLIPOLIS (ML=4/1),

CONNECTED - Tough to keep chasing this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. Hard to recommend this one out of the one slot. Hasn't run well out of there. JOE GONZALEZ - Didn't finish in the money on September 13th after the very long layoff. Be doubtful of this horse in today's event. Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any type of closing ability on September 13th. GALLIPOLIS - Last performed on Sep 5th at Mountaineer Park, finishing fourth. Unlikely to get better off of that try in today's event. Recorded a somewhat easily forgotten speed figure last time around the track in a $4,000 Maiden Claiming race on September 5th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that fig.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
Picks Notes
#3 Dust Storm Price swing has done little through two starts, but you can be sure he was finding a better group at Kentucky Downs last out than he's going to meet here, and maybe he has a go for it from the fence.
#5 Furiously He was pretty one-paced in the debut try at Colonial, but those races can come up okay, and I figure he's in line for a good trip spying the speed here. Looks capable, but something just feels like a trap here.
#4 Mo Angell He moved up when getting around two turns last time out on the turf, and he should be able to get a good trip tracking the top choice. He might inherit the lead if that guy stops.
Race Summary Dust Storm will be a decent price here after stopping badly in Kentucky, but he has a little bit of pace to put to use from this draw near the inside in a race where there are at least a couple question marks on the logical players.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
Picks Notes
#6 Shoot Your Cuffs He keeps offering playable prices despite a string of really sharp efforts, and he projects for a pretty nice trip while letting the speedier players take the initiative out of the gate. Cutback player finishes best today?
#5 Aegontheconqueror He has been moving in the right direction and capped it with a maiden win while stepping up in class last time out, and he's fast enough to be one of the early factors while stepping up to face winners.
#7 Commodore Barry He's kind of all over the place on running style, but he can be a pretty honest finisher on his better days. That said, I think he might be along too late in this spot and may benefit from being hustled a bit more early.
Race Summary Shoot Your Cuffs should get another good trip, and he's as reliable as they come in this group right now. Hoping he'll offer something like a second or third-choice price on the board.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
Picks Notes
#8 Whiskeymac He mostly tried to keep up before flattening out in the debut run, and he has some upside to sustain that rally better this time around. Could see him getting a good trip here.
#6 Colonel Poppy He has run a few okay races so far, but I do worry that he has given away ground late in those last two starts and might be vulnerable again late today.
#2 Josh's Honor He might like the local company after chasing and stopping in his first two starts at Parx, and he might be quick enough to get in the mix early with these. Chance.
Race Summary Whiskeymac turned in a pretty even effort at first asking, but he can build on that try and draws well here to spy the speed from close range outside.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Fort Erie - Race #2
Picks Notes
#1 LINDA LOVES LACE (3-1) Responded when set down in last pair but overland trips took their toll.
#4 FORMENTOR (8-5) Lone 6.5F winner in field was in tight on turn chasing winner through solid fractions.
#6 REMEMBEROLDTYMES (4-1) Sat good trip, ‘proved best’ while fending off the fave in short sprint.
Race Summary LINDA LOVES LACE launched good rallies into the far turn in her last two starts, one on a fast track and one in the slop, only to level off in mid-stretch while extremely wide. She switches pilots again for another try at this level and should have ample pace flow in front of her to sustain a winning bid. Bet to win and place.

Fort Erie - Race #4
Picks Notes
#1 TWICE AS SMART (4-1) Useful comeback, meets weak field, dam showed promise on the turf.
#3 WE WANT ACTION (8-1) Smashing debut winner on dirt, no threat off wide trip in follow-up allowances.
#2 SAMUEL H (5-2) Piles up the checks, burns a lot of money, well-suited to today’s distance.
Race Summary Three entrants try the turf for the first time, facing five others with a combined 1-for-34 on the lawn. That being said, TWICE AS SMART gets the call from the rail after he rallied 4-wide after a six-week layoff and finished third in a 5-1/2F sprint on Woodbine’s all-weather track. His dam, Smart Mission, won a one-mile MSW debut and 7F allowance winner on grass in the only two starts of her career. Bet to win and place.

Fort Erie - Race #7
Picks Notes
#8 J M R GEMMA (5-2) Exited allowance company, romped as fave, taken to repeat.
#1 PENNIESFROMABOVE (15-1) Mild gain on turn, second to top one, price attached.
#3 VOLATA (3-1) Needs alert break, will be running late, could return quick claim dividend.
Race Summary J M R Gemma benefited from a strong outside bias and pulled away in the 5-path on the class drop at 5F. She switches from a 10-pound apprentice to a journeyman jockey and can enhance the barn’s recent 29 percent ‘repeat’ rate. Play an 8/1,3/ALL trifecta.
