Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#6 Good Governance defeated allowance runners two starts back at Saratoga in a similar race to this one. Last time out, he was fourth in a stakes race at Monmouth Park. #1 Big Everest won two races in a row at Belmont Park before a poor effort last time out at Saratoga. He should bounce back today.

Race 8: Allowance

#3 Golden Alchemist takes a class drop for this one after running fourth at Parx in a stakes race. We should see an improved effort with him running against winners for the second time today. #6 Up to the Mark also should show improvement in his second race against winners after running third at this level last time out at Saratoga.

Race 9: Maiden Special Weight

#3 Looms Boldy debuts in this spot for Brad Cox, who has had a lot of recent success with first time starters. This one has some solid works leading up to the race. #11 Uncle Marty was a head away from victory last time out at this distance and class level at Saratoga.

Geelong will host a massive 10-race program on Thursday as the solitary Victorian meeting for the day. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, and even though there is rain in the forecast for Wednesday, it should be a fine day on raceday. The rail has gone out to the 8m position from the 1700m to the 800m and will be out in the 11m position for the remainder of the course. Racing will commence at 12:20pm AEST.
Best Bet: Greece

We were with Greece from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable on Tuesday before the Echuca meeting was abandoned, so we will be with her again at Geelong. This three-year-old filly has only been before the starter once in her short career, in a Group 2 Reisling Stakes where she finished last by 11 lengths. After her debut race, this daughter of I Am Invincible was spelled for six months and now lines up in a $37,500 maiden plate that looks to be a relatively easy kill. This girl contested a jump-out at Cranbourne on September 12 where she was hard held for the entirety of the 800m trial, even though she led and won it very easily, suggesting this filly is well above average. The form Victorian-based jockey, Jamie Kah, will take the ride on this filly, which is another huge push.

Our next best bet for the Geelong card comes up in race two in a three-year-old maiden plate over 1447m, where we will be siding with Yaki Ishi. The Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock-trained gelding will be facing the starter for the fifth time in his short career, and this race will be his second-up run for this preparation. In this son of Maurice’s first preparation he contested the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes and finished third, a length off the winner, Letsrollthedice, while beating home many subsequent winners coming out of that field. Jye McNeil will stick with this gelding after piloting him to second place by the barest of margins at Sandown last start, which is another positive sign.

In the sixth race of the day we have found another good bet on the card with the Phillip Stokes-trained Ballynora returning from a five-month spell in a Class 1 Handicap over 1247m. This four-year-old mare has contested much better races what she will contest here, considering she ran in the Listed Desirable Stakes last November and the Listed Adelaide Guineas in May of this year. If this daughter of Fastnet Rock returns in good order and produces first-up like she usually does, recording a win and a place from three resuming runs, we should be seeing her notch career win number two.

The Hawkesbury Race Club is set to host a bumper nine-race program on Thursday afternoon on a track rated a Heavy 8. Despite the rail being out 2m from the 1100-600m, 4m from the 600m-400m, 2m from the 400m to the winning post and true for the remainder, fancied runners will get their chances no matter where they settle in running as long – as they handle the heavy ground. Weather permitting, the day of racing gets underway at 12:40pm AEST.
Best Bet at Hawkesbury – Noble Attack

The Robert & Luke Price-trained Noble Attack has been a perennial bridesmaid at his last four starts, racking up four-straight runner-up efforts, but Thursday looks to be his day. The four-year-old gelding has been beaten a combined 1.6-lengths in those four starts and looks massively overdue to break his maiden tag. The son of Counterattack has a racing pattern which is hard to knock as he leads most fields up and continues to fight in the home straight. He has continually found one better in recent times, but the booking of Tommy Berry should be the difference in him gaining his first win. From barrier seven, Berry will have this guy lobbed on the bunny throughout and considering he is the only one to have run a drum at his last in this race, Noble Attack looks to be a clear best bet of the day.

Next Best at Hawkesbury – Estilete

Last start Goulburn maiden winner Estilete from the Annabel Neasham yard looks to be incredibly hard to run down in the penultimate race of the day. The three-year-old filly smashed her rivals at her second start over 1300m, making up for an unlucky run in transit by subsequent Golden Rose Stakes placegetter Zou Tiger on debut. Alysha Collett sticks on board for this assignment and from barrier eight, should have no issue in having the Written Tycoon filly settled in front or close to the speed throughout. With a few or her main rivals resuming from spells, we are hoping her untapped ability and race fitness will hold Estilete in fine fiddle and prove too hard to gun down.

The Craig Carmody-trained Edna was defeated a lip at Wyong on August 16 when narrowly missing in a three way go when finishing third over 1100m. The four-year-old mare was in a bumping duel with the eventual winner from the 700m and appeared to have plenty of excuses in running, so she did well to be beaten by a narrow margin. The Stratum Star mare has two minor placings from four starts on rain-affected going and considering she will be up on speed throughout this 1300m event, she looks to be a great value play. From barrier four, look for Kathy O’Hara to lob this girl outside the leader once again and with a repeat effort of her last start, Edna will take some holding out at a nice price.

Belmont at the Big A Horses in Focus for Thursday, September 29

RACE 4: BIG Q (#3)

My primary opinion in this $25k claimer is that I want to play against the Jose Camejo entry of Viradia (#2) and Alpine Queen (#2B). Many will just assume they’ll improve off the claim since Camejo has had a great deal of success with this NYRA starters and he’s named top riders on both. I just don’t need a short price on horses who are little hard to like based on form. U Guys Are No Fun (#7) makes some sense as she drops in for a tag for the first time in her career. However, she’s been a bit of a disappointment on dirt, and I’m not convinced that she’s a natural sprinter. She’s also being ridden by a jockey who has limited success on this circuit. Fellow dropdown Mia Bea Star (#1A) is more interesting to me as she seeks to rebound from a couple of poor efforts. I don’t mind the turnback for her, and she figures to be a better price. Yet I’m most interesting in a couple of other mares who are moving up the class ladder. My top pick is Big Q (#3). She ran poorly last time out as the favorite, but she’s getting a trainer upgrade out of that race, as she was claimed by Jose D’Angelo. This barn hasn’t started that many runners in New York, but does well off the claim out of town. She has plenty of prior races at a higher level that would make her competitive here. I also expect her to get an aggressive ride from Luis Saez in a race that lacks a clear pace scenario. The other horse I’d use from that same race is Shadolamo (#6). I think it’s interesting that the connections are reuniting her with Jackie Davis, who rode her well earlier in the year. She’s more pace dependent than my top pick, but she’s run well in each of her last two dirt sprints.

RACE 6: FOUETTE (#7)

This optional claiming turf sprint seems fairly wide open, and I’m somewhat against the horse who I’ve pegged as the morning line favorite. Hit the Woah (#5) figures to attract some support off her victory at the N2X level last time. However, she got a great setup that day, just tracking the pace in a race where the heavy favorite was compromised by rushing up to lead after a poor start. I’m not thrilled with her prior form and want others. Assertive Style (#6) makes plenty of sense on the turnback. She didn’t get the right ride or trip last time when reserved off a slow pace while racing wide every step of the way. She had put forth a good effort going this distance against a tougher field in the Intercontinental prior to that, and appears to be in solid form. My top pick is Fouette (#7). She made her turf debut in the Smart N Fancy last time at Saratoga and significantly outran her 37-1 odds to finish sixth, beaten less than two lengths. Linda Rice has been intending to get her on turf, entering and scratching her from the Caress prior to running in that stakes last time. While she got a pretty good trip, I liked the way she fought on along the rail through the lane finishing in tandem with some rivals who would be short prices against a field like this. She has good tactical speed and is drawn well outside this time. I would also use Keeper of Time (#2) on the turnback in distance. She hasn’t gone quite this short in any of her U.S. starts, but I thought she ran well at 7 furlongs in the Glen Cove last fall. The turnback could work for her, and she figures to be a decent price.

RACE 8: AFFABLE MONARCH (#8)

Golden Alchemist (#3) could go favored in this N1X allowance affair. He looks pretty formidable if you draw a line through his last race, where he disappointed in a Grade 3 at Parx. Some horses just don’t perform over that track, and he never really got involved in the race that day. His maiden victory in July was excellent and he’ll be tough to beat if he builds on that performance. I’m just not so keen to simply dismiss the last race of a horse who is going to be a short price. Todd Pletcher sends out two of his main rivals in Gasoline (#5) and Up to the Mark (#6). I’ll be interested to see if they both run, since they possess similar running styles. Gasoline is proven at the distance after breaking his maiden going this far last time, though he got a perfect setup in doing so. Winit (#9) easily defeated Gasoline when he broke his maiden in July at Belmont, earning a speed figure that makes him formidable here. However, he failed to back up that performance last time at Saratoga. He did have an excuse that day, as he was off a step slowly and rushed up while getting too keen after that. I think he’s a candidate to rebound here at a better price. Even if Pletcher scratches one of his runners there appears to be enough pace in here to set up a late closer. Affable Monarch (#8) comes into this NYRA start a little light on speed figures, but I think he be ready for a step forward. This horse showed promise as a 2-year-old, impressively winning his debut before immediately stretching out in distance. He was slow to come around when he returned from a layoff this year, but his last few starts have been heading in the right direction. I thought he ran particularly well last time when overcoming a moderate pace to just miss. He seems like one that’s crying out for 1 1/8 miles and Manny Franco should be a good fit for this grinder.

(2) Alessia was third in her first start at Keeneland and then fourth at Saratoga, both times behind horses that won their next start. Nick Zito has not won a race this year. (3) Kitten’s Appeal moves to the barn of Bruce Levine after four starts at Gulfstream Park. Last time she pressed the pace and finished third after having the lead in the stretch. (6) Funny How has a pair of thirds against NY-breds for Ray Handal.

2nd race [Md Sp Wt, 6F TURF] – (5) Theregoesmymiracle (C) was bet down from 7-1 to 5-1 and chased a front-end winner to finish second just two weeks ago at BAQ. 2nd race – (1) Palace Coup has speed and the rail and should not look back. (2) Spa City has run well lately and looks like the main rival. (3) Galerio is worth a look off the Cash claim. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3.

Picks Notes
#4 Rainas Rollin Think she hits pretty hard in the opener in a race where she looks pretty likely to control the tempo early, and she might stretch her main threats out a bit turning for home. Lots to like to kick off the card.
#3 Geared Up Her form fits, but she has to turn the tables on the top choice from that meeting last time out, and I'm not sure her late-running style is going to be flattered any more this time around.
#1 Alation Her form might be a bit on the sneaky side, as she's probably better than a few fifth-place finishes in a row may suggest. Groundsaving trip on the fence while tucked in behind the top choice?
Race Summary Rainas Rollin looks tough off the last running line, and she gets a really good race flow to work with here while appearing to be the easy controlling pace.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
Picks Notes
#1 Quality Control She'll try the locals for the first time while dropping out of stakes company, and her two previous races since adding Lasix were both pretty sharp. There are a couple forward players in here that could potentially set things up for her late rally -- she might like it here.
#4 My Philly Twirl No arguments with anyone who wants to land on the likely chalk, as she brings a class edge to this one out of Grade II company with 3-year-olds earlier this year. That said, I'm a little surprised the barn is winless from five starts so far, and they've been sent off at an average of 2/1. Wouldn't be shocked if this logical one settled underneath despite being the one to beat.
#2 Miss Mikaela She's the committed pace from near the fence, but the one drawn widest owns some pace too, and I'd love to see them hook up and prompt each other a bit too much early to set the table for a late runner.
Race Summary Quality Control might get an okay run while settled off the pace and hoping an early battle of some kind develops, and she's probably going to be an okay price while trying the local footing for the first time.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
Picks Notes
#3 Vassar's Boy He should be a decent price while rising to face winners, but I really liked his local debut when graduating in a 12/1 upset. Think the race shape should give him a decent chance to come alive from a bit off the splits.
#5 Flawless Bourbon He can add to the early tempo, but I love that he has a proven rating gear, and that might allow him to ease back just a touch off the other pace players and let everything unfold. He's probably tough here.
#8 Dr. Steve He's back into open company for this one, and both of his local races have come back pretty tough. He's got some versatility in running style, giving Morales a couple options on how far off the pace to settle him early.
Race Summary Vassar's Boy brings an effort last out that looks pretty competitive with this group to my eye, and I think he lands a good trip spying the pace early on here. Tough rise for winners, but the price might be right over a track he obviously handled fine.

Race Summary VESPOLINA was outrun into the turn with blinkers on, but she accelerated quickly while 4-wide and wore down the leaders in mid-track to end a long winless drought. She draws the rail today and could launch a contending rally if she saves ground and stays in closer contact. Bet to win and place.
