RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Elegance Code; 8-Shocking Grey
Backups/savers: 4-Candy On Top

Forecast: There are three main players in this mile grass maiden affair for older fillies and mares and none are what you’d call trustworthy. Elegance Code showed a bit of ability in a pair of starts last year before being turned out and returns for trainer Carla Gaines with a steady if not spectacular series of dirt workout that should have her fit enough. While her recent work tab lacks spark, it’s possible that she’s not much of a worker (she was 32-1 in her debut) but better on grass and more willing in the afternoon. With Flavian Prat taking the call, you’d have to think she’s a live item in her first outing since April. Shocking Grey didn’t get the best of runs when second at 50 cents on the dollar in a similar maiden turf miler at Del Mar last time out. She lacks tactical speed and always will be susceptible to trouble, but if she can negotiate a reasonable trip and get some help up front the daughter of Grazen should make her presence felt late. Candy On Top is likely to get a piece of it, as she his hit the board in five of nine career outings. But she doesn’t seem to provide much punch late when put to pressure.

RACE 2: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-Nolo Contesto ; 5-Brutto
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Restricted (nw-2) $16,000 older sprinters compete in today’s second race, with Nolo Contesto seeking his first victory in nearly four years. And he’s a main contender! The 7-year-old ridgling makes his first start since being claimed for this price just two weeks ago and shortens to six furlongs, a distance that he has shown to be competitive at. On pure numbers, he’s a fit and with excellent speed jockey Edwin Maldonado taking the call, it would not be surprising if the Doug O’Neill-trained gelding finds himself on or near the lead throughout. The one to fear most is the Bob Baffert-trained class dropper Brutto, away since May and showing up in a seller for the first time after once being fairly well regarded. Hard to believe he finished second to Flightline in his racing debut (okay, he was beaten nearly 14 lengths) and in his younger days he earned speed figures that would bury this field, so with the son of Nyquist the only consideration is his current health and condition, which is suspect. These are the two we’ll be using in rolling exotic play, but best advice is to tread lightly.

RACE 3: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Topolina; 4-Majestic Steps; 6-Runninwiththeboyz
Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Topolina left her previous form behind when returning from a six month vacation to beat maidens in good style at Del Mar last time out while on the pace throughout, and similar tactics surely will be employed today in this starter optional claimer over six furlongs on that flat turf course that she’s run well over in the past. The workouts since that mid-November victory have been nothing short of sizzling at San Luis Rey Downs, so we’re expecting the Doug O’Neill-trained daughter of Goldencents to produce a forward move and be tough to catch right back. Majestic Steps is just 1-for-16 in her career but at least that one win was accomplished over this course and distance. Aways most comfortable as a late-running sprinter, she turns back in trip after finishing fourth over a mile in her first outing in nine months, an effort that should have her primed for a major effort today. Her work tab is healthy and the switch to Flavian Prat won’t hurt. Runninwiththeboyz beat maiden claimers under these conditions during the fall meeting and returns protected in a sign of confidence. She’s a little shy in the speed figure department but is lightly raced with room to improve and if the front runners collapse she’ll likely be heard from late.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 4: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): Distorted Match; 2-Famous Star
Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Distorted Math finished a respectable second in a straight maiden print at Los Alamitos in his debut last month but returns in a maiden $40,000, not exactly a ring endorsement or a sign of confidence from the Bob Baffert stable. A $190,000 yearling purchase now into his four year old season, the son of Distorted Humor clearly isn’t viewed as a long term prospect by his connections, but if he has at least one good one left he should be able to handle this soft assignment, assuming he actually starts. Famous Star has speed figures that are good enough to win at this level, but he’s been a beaten favorite in three of his last four starts, most recently when finishing second at 50 cents on the dollar in a similar fair over this track and distance during the fall meeting. In a race that offers little wagering value with no other viable candidates, we’ll include both in our rolling exotics but otherwise pass the race.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 5: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Hembree; 2-Kandarel
Backups/savers: 4-Commander

Forecast: Here’s a messy grass grab bag sprint for older $50,000 claimers that requires coverage in rolling exotic play. Depending upon your budget, we suggest you include as many as you can afford, including the three we’ve listed above. Hembree takes a logical class drop in his first outing in nearly two years, but for this price he’s hardly being given away. The Peter Miller barn has solid stats with layoff runners and always has had good luck when using Flavian Pratt, so we suspect the son of Proud Citizen is live and well-meant. The San Luis Rey Downs work tab doesn’t look flashy but is solid and healthy and should have the winner of nine races (with 10 additional runner-up efforts) ready to resume where he left off. Kanderel was winless in 2022 so now at age six he is being realistically dropped in class to a level that should be within his range. The Richard Mandella-trained gelding is a three-time winner over the Santa Anita lawn and, when he’s on his game, can produce a dangerous late kick. Commander went zero-for-eight last year but usually clunks up and gets at least a part. He’ll be running on late, so you should use him somewhere, perhaps as a back-up, just in case there’s a meltdown up front.

RACE 6: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Feeling Grazeful
Backups/savers: 1-Big Shamrock

Forecast: Feeling Grazeful has been away for 11 months but finds a suitable spot for a successful return in this allowance optional claiming sprint for state-bred fillies and mares. Drawn nicely outside in the six-runner field, the lightly raced five-year-old mare has run her best over a mile on grass but has performed well enough around one corner on the main track to expect she’s set a winning effort. In a race that should have soft early splits, the daughter of Grazen can be placed just about wherever her connections. Big Shamrock can be very dangerous if our top pick fails to show up with her best stuff. Her lack of tactical speed in somewhat problematic from the rail but a repeat of her Los Alamitos score two runs back should put her somewhere in the hunt.

RACE 7: Post: 3:30 PT Grade:
Main ticket (in order of preference):
Backups/savers:

Forecast: We’re going to take a stand with Xmas Surprise in this downhill turf sprint for second level allowance fillies and mares. A prototype late-running grass sprinter, the daughter of More Than Ready is especially effective when the race shape promotes her style, and in a race in which both Phenom and Angelcents can’t help but ensure a blistering pace (and more than likely do each other in), the Leonard Powell-trained mare should get the patient rider she requires from Flavian Prat and then be along in time. Aqua Seaform Shame was overmatched in the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes when used on the pace, but at this lower level she is likely to draft into a stalking position and have every chance when the pressure is turned on. She’s competitive on speed figures and is likely to benefit from the switch to patient Joe Bravo.

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

RACE 8: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Glorious Spring; 1-Irish Wahine
Backups/savers: 5-Vella

Forecast: This is a split of the sixth race and it’s a challenging affair because the three main players lack tactical speed. But with just six runners in the field (same as the sixth race), each of the contenders should have their chance. Glorious Spring, runner-up at this level in her last pair, has numbers that are considerably lower than par but is lightly raced (just four starts) and she may have more room to improve than the others. The Dan Blacker-trained filly has had two nice breezes to tick her over since her last outing in mid-December, so we’ll give her the edge on top. Irish Wahine has won her last two starts when facing low level claimers and was just claimed for $10,000 by trainer Steve Knapp, who wheels her back protected in a sign of confidence. Based strictly on speed figures, the daughter of Grazen is an absolute fit and a “must use” despite the so-called “class hike.” Vella, in the frame in her last two, has finished first or second in four of seven starts over the Santa Anita main track and seems well-spotted for another solid effort.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 9: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Dolly May; 10-Ice Queen
Backups/savers: 11-Consternation

Forecast: Restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claiming older fillies and mares meet over a mile on grass in the Friday finale, with the main contention drawn towards the outside. Dolly May has races against considerably tougher foes that would beat this field, but she is winless in nine starts since being imported from Ireland and is still seeking her winning level. She’s a one-paced grinder and probably needs to be within striking range throughout to have her best chance. Ice Queen finished second in a similar affair at Del Mar in November while on the front end and if she can turn in two alike she’ll be right there, especially if they hand her the front end again. Consternation gets the worst of the draw but often gets a piece of it and has numbers that make her competitive. With nothing to trust, best advice is to spread deeply.

Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis January 13, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the weekend with a 10-race card. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

2-Littlebearcat (3-1)-Steps-up and it will be a test for this sharp mare. JMac sticks over #6 and could be up to the challenge.
6-Askmysecretary (9/2)-Filion gets the assignment and will look for an aggressive drive from the word "go". Should be racing near the top of the stack and might make the most of an efficient trip.
7-PL Ooooooooooyah (7/2)-This mare starts fast and has been finishing with her nose under the wire 1st in 3 straight. The streak will end at some point but not confident it will be over tonight.

Race 8

1-Nightlife Seelster (7/2)-Looking for better after an even effort from the 1-hole. McClure needs to provide a nice stalking trip and if so could be the best down the lane.
3-Sly Eleanor N (4-1)-This will be the 3rd start off the bench and McNair will steer again. Should be tighter and ready for a big effort, has won 12 out of 60 Wbsb races.

Race 9

5-Need To Breathe (2-1)-Winner of 2 straight has been dominant versus this kind. Appears to be a clean trip away from a 3-peat.
6-Sporty Tori (6-1)-If there was a battle up front and the chalk got abused this gal can close fastest of all. The price should be right to use on the bottom of an exacta.

Race 10

6-Magnificent Seven (5-1)-This 7-year-old racked up 7 wins in 35 starts in 2022 and he defeated better here on 11-11. Roy will be between the pipes and he steered this veteran for 2 wins this fall. Looking for a big try at a solid price.
8-Cascada (4-1)-Beaten 4/5 chalk broke in the late going at Flmd on 1-7. Willing to excuse the miscue and should fit well with this crew. There aren't many in this field who have had much success here. This 8-year-old has connected for pictures in 4 of 29 starts and beat better in the fall.

0.20 Late Pick 4

2,6,7/1,3/5,6/6,8
Total Bet=$4.80

Laurel Park Pick 4 Analysis Friday, Jan. 13 January 13, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
Jeiron Barbosa, an Eclipse Award finalist as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 2022, picked up where he left off to start this year at Laurel Park. He rode the winners in three legs of the 50-cent Late Pick 4 last Friday and has two live mounts and one longshot in the sequence on this week’s card that shapes up this way:

LRL 6th race (2:52 EST) -- DEEDS OF LOVE’s sire is 1-18 with 2-year-old first-time starters and her dam was winless in five starts; however, she stepped it up a notch in two recent 5F workouts from the gate for a solid barn with debut runners. MAMA’S EYES blew a commanding lead on a muddy track at 6F with blinkers on for the first time, now she adds Lasix on the cutback to 5-1/2F. MARIA FROM MIAMI just missed winning in her only non-MSW start two back at Aqueduct on short rest and she, too, gets Lasix for the first time. CALM N COLLECTED hasn’t shown much in the morning, but her dam was 3-for-3 with two stakes victories sprinting to start her career.

LRL 7th race (3:21 EST) -- Four of the seven entrants in this Maryland-bred allowance arrive off easy victories. On top of that, morning-line favorite SHE IS WISKY is a tricky read. She was under a drive on the turn and had a lively pace to rally into in a comeback sprint but only managed to finish a distant third. On the other hand, she ran second in her prior route attempt on the main track to stakes winner Bazinga C (6-14, $247k). Hit the ‘ALL’ button in this leg of the Pick 4.

LRL 8th race (3:50 EST) -- COAL MINE goes from one top barn to another for her first long-distance test, but at 5-2 on the morning line, take a stand against her because the rivals she faced in her last three starts were a combined 0-for-12 with no seconds in their next start. Trainer Brittany Russell sends out an uncoupled entry of Maiden Special Weight sprint winners CATS IN THE TIMBER and PHAROAHS BABY GIRL. Both start fresh and both get Lasix – both good angles in this barn.

LRL 9th race (4:20 EST) – SAPPHIRE BEAUTY has speed and the rail with Barbosa to pilot and takes a magnified class drop in this field. COFFEE BEAN ran third as the favorite coming out of a ‘key’ race three starts back, had troubled last out and will be running late today.

Suggested 50-cent Ticket

LRL 6th Race: 2, 3, 5, 9
LRL 7th Race: ALL
LRL 8th Race: 3, 4
LRL 9th Race: 1, 6

COST: $56

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Charles Town - Race #6

Picks
Notes

#7 Seeds of Time
Think she's going to be a handful here from close range in a race without a bunch of pace, and she should be able to find a trip right up near the top early on. Guessing she'll handle these.

#6 Thunderturtle
She's the most logical alternative in a race that feels pretty top heavy and likely to be decided by one of these top two. She should be able to find a good forward spot close to the top choice.

#2 She Figures
She's a reliable finisher, but she figures to give away the jump to the top pair in here, and she has to turn the tables on the top choice from their last couple meetings.

Race Summary
Seeds of Time and Thunderturtle look like the right pair in a spot where the flow figures to advantage players with a bit of tactical pace.

Charles Town - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#1 E J's Revenge
Think he gets a good trip from the inside in a spot with several dedicated forward players stacked up outside of him. Along late at a price?

#4 Always Drinking
He's capable of something a little better than he showed last time out, but I worry he's overbet again with this group.

#6 Golden G
Don't think he's a serious threat for top honors, but he's a decent enough finisher to think he might get past some of the speed late.

Race Summary
E J's Revenge looks interesting at what should be a playable price, as he has turned in a handful of solid recent local efforts while getting little respect on the board.

Charles Town - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#5 Sharp Style
I'm not all that enthused with this group, so maybe a fresh face is worth a look at what figures to be a decent mid-range price.

#7 Chrome Heir
He has been pretty reliable with the local crew so far in his career, but I think he is pretty likely to find one or two of these a little too tough today. In the mix, but think he's best used underneath.

#2 Home School
He might be a good fit with the locals as he rises into special weight company here off a string of decent maiden claiming tries at Parx and Laurel.

Race Summary
Sharp Style goes first out, and we can get a good look at him on the tote and track ahead of this debut run, and I think there are some potential underlays likely to be on the board in here.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2

Picks
Notes

#7 PRETTY RACHEL (5-1)
Can use her speed wisely in bid to enhance 13-for-32 record.

#4 ALIZEE (6-5)
Overpowered ‘Rachel’ in the stretch, well-spotted in third start off claim.

#1 DANCIN DEE (9-2)
Won back-to-back routes by combined 23-1/2 lengths, enters new barn.

Race Summary
PRETTY RACHEL was no match for three-peat winner ALIZEE at 6F last out, but she dueled to the stretch and held okay for second. She must brace for a similar challenge in a longer sprint but the price should be good enough to warrant a win and place bet.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4

Picks
Notes

#1 GOLDEN TONE (8-1)
Packs late kick, gets plenty of pace to run at, must use on all tickets.

#5 INTER MIAMI (2-1)
Set rapid pace, briefly lost lead, battled back to win for $20k two back.

#7 LITIGANT (7-2)
Had his head turned sideways and held at start, nearly won, declared non-starter.

Race Summary
GOLDEN TONE rallied for two wins and a near miss in three starts over the track. He projects an ideal trip in a speed-laden field and is well-suited to the 6-1/2F distance. Bet to win and place and play a 1-ALL exacta.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #6

Picks
Notes

#3 POINT PROVEN (3-2)
Could prove worthy of elite 3yo status with a move forward off maiden romp

#4 PRAIRIE HAWK (9-2)
Won in 5-horse field over track, can use his speed well in this spot.

#2 CLASSIC CATCH (9-5)
Rallied 4- and 5-wide into slow pace and took over in the final furlong.

Race Summary
All but one 3-year-old entered in this allowance route won in their last start going 7F and beyond. POINT PROVEN was most impressive, ranging up 3-wide on the final turn and drawing away to 5-length victory in a 12-horse field at Churchill Downs. He breezed through three workouts since then and gets Lasix for the first time today. Bet to win and place.

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Friday, January 13 (https://timeformusblog.com/2023/01/12/aqueduct-horses-in-focus-for-friday-january-13/) Posted on January 12, 2023 (https://timeformusblog.com/2023/01/12/aqueduct-horses-in-focus-for-friday-january-13/) by David Aragona (https://timeformusblog.com/author/horsetowatch/)
RACE 1: TONIGHT WE LOVE (#3)
Candlestick Maker (#1) may have simply found a soft enough field as she makes her second attempt on dirt after just missing at this level in November. I do think she’s more of a turf horse, but she seemed to handle dirt well enough to be considered a win threat at this level. I just have trouble accepting a very short price on a one-placed plodder like this mare. The most logical alternative appears to be Frosty Invasion (#6), who could appreciate stretching back out in distance after a pair of sprint tries. She ran pretty well against a decent field of New York-bred maidens going 6 furlongs two back, but then didn’t fare as well in the mud last time. The addition of blinkers suggests that she could show improved early speed here, and she’s handled a mile in the past. I actually view her as the horse to beat at what figures to be a better price. Yet my top pick may offer even better value. Tonight We Love (#3) is another who has had limited opportunities to route on dirt, and I think she may also appreciate stretching back out in distance. She actually finished over 5 lengths ahead of Frosty Invasion when they met in that Dec. 8 affair, and then last time she didn’t appear to handle the sloppy track as well. She’s another who possesses the speed to be forwardly placed, and we’ve seen this 10-pound apprentice rider get aggressive at times. I know this 0-for-12 filly has had plenty of chances, but I think she’s finally in the right spot.
RACE 6: PREPOSTEROUS (#7)
I suppose Shinfull (#5) is the horse to beat off as she steps up against winners given the lack of depth in this field. It’s an unusually weak state-bred N1X allowance, as the field really didn’t come up that much tougher than the group of maidens she beat last time. That said, she is switching into a new barn after reaching top form for Rick Schosberg late last year. She also hasn’t run particularly fast despite finishing in the exacta in her last 5 starts. I don’t have a major issue with her, but I just didn’t need to endorse her at a short price. I actually prefer the mare just to her outside. Shadolamo (#6) at least has positive recent experience at this level – the only one in the field who can claim that. She probably should have won two back when her apprentice rider lost too much ground on the far turn. Then last time she ran well but couldn’t contain the late burst of winner Mia Bea Star, who herself would be a big favorite in a race like this. She fits on speed figures and has to be considered a major win threat. My top pick at what I would hope is a slightly better price is Preposterous (#7). She didn’t run well in her first start off the claim for Linda Rice, but something may have gone awry that day. She was in a bad position right from the start, shuffled back from her rail post, and just never got involved after that. It appears that she came out of the race with some kind of setback, as she didn’t return to the worktab until mid-December. I think she has a chance here if she can bounce back to the form we saw out of her at Saratoga over the summer when she finished second to Dame Cinco. She’s drawn well outside this time, and I think it’s a good sign that Linda Rice elects to move her up to this level rather than drop back in for a tag.
RACE 7: MIDNIGHT WORKER (#1)
I’m not sure who the public might make favored in this race, as it does appear to be pretty competitive. If they do bet Got the Gold (#4), I know that I would rather look in a different direction. He owns competitive speed figures, but he’s just been picking up pieces in his recent efforts. The drop in class may suit him, but he’s a one-run closer in a race that doesn’t feature that much early pace. I made Abundant Honor (#6) the lukewarm morning line favorite, and I do think he’s more appealing at a similar price. The turnback in distance is a major question mark, but he is bred to go shorter, as his dam was a sprinter and he’s a half-brother to graded stakes-winning sprinter Skyler’s Scramjet. He didn’t run well last time, but he was always out of position while getting a less than energetic ride from Carmouche. The claim by Tom Morley is generally a positive one, but it is worth noting that Morley is just 3 for 32 (9%, $1.08 ROI) first off the claim for this owner. Among the logical types, I much prefer Midnight Worker (#1). Some may be reluctant to play this barn, but Amira Chichackly has had some success in the past month or so. She got this horse to find his best form first off the claim two back when he finished gamely for second at this level. He arguably could have finished closer to the winner that day, but he got briefly stymied in traffic on the turn. I’m not holding his last race against him, since he was facing a much better field and 1 3/16 miles is simply too far. He did win his only prior start sprinting on dirt in his career debut, and he has the tactical speed to be forward from the rail. One other horse that I want to use somewhere, mostly underneath, is Ava K’s Boy (#3). He finished just a few noses out of fourth last time after getting a wide trip and may be capable of better second off the layoff.

Dubai Preview: Spot plays for Jan. 13, 2023
Alastair Bull

Dubai’s carnival continues to heat up at Meydan on Friday. Headlining the seven-race card is the Al Rashidiya (G2), but there are two conditions races that should also be appealing betting races.

Here are some spot plays to look at.
Race 4, 10:45 a.m. ET: Ipi Tombe Stakes, 1,400 meters, turf, 3-year-old and up fillies and mares

Named after an outstanding and well-traveled Zimbabwean filly, this race has drawn a suitably international field, with horses from Scandinavia, Spain, and New Zealand joining the usual suspects from Britain.

2021 Natalma (G1) winner #9 Wild Beauty resumes after a limited three-year-old campaign; she won the Fred Darling (G3) over today’s distance before two Group 1 failures over longer trips. If she’s back to her best, she’ll be a tough opponent.

Godolphin also has 2021 UAE 1,000 Guineas winner #3 Soft Whisper, twice a winner at Listed level last year, while the best of the internationals could be #4 Carolina Reaper, a Group 3 winner in New Zealand now based in Dubai.

Wild Beauty could be at false odds so I’m taking Soft Whisper as my main bet, with the others in exactas.

$10 win/$30 show: #3 Soft Whisper
$4 exacta: box 3, 4, 9

Race 5, 11:20 a.m. ET: Al Rashidiya (G2), 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles), turf, 3-year-olds and up

Four runners carry the Godolphin colors here, and all have solid chances. Saeed bin Suroor saddles #1 Dubai Future and #5 Passion And Glory, first and second in the Bahrain International Trophy (G3) Nov. 18, while Charlie Appleby has #8 Valiant Prince, a four-length winner of the Ganton S. Jun. 10, and #10 Ottoman Fleet, triumphant by 5 1/2 lengths in the James Seymour S. Oct. 29.

Their leading challengers are #6 San Donato, winner of the National Day Cup at Abu Dhabi Dec. 4, and #11 Zagrey, last seen winning the Listed Grand Prix du Nord at Chantilly Oct. 30.

Ottoman Fleet looks like a horse going places, but the odds may be short, and he could want another furlong to be at his best, so I’m going to support Valiant Prince.

$10 win/$30 show: #8 Valiant Prince
$1 trifecta: 8, 10 with 1, 8, 10 with 1, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11

Race 6, 11:55 a.m. ET: Thunder Snow Challenge, 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles), dirt, 3-year-olds and up

Another very international event, featuring two runners from Korea, #4 Haengbok Wangja and #5 King of the Match, whose form is hard to line up. Several contenders took part in the Entisar S. Dec. 23, including #11 Bendoog (second that day), #3 First Constitution (third), #1 Ajuste Fiscal (fourth), and #2 Atletico El Culano (sixth). Given the set weight conditions, one could expect Bendoog and First Constitution to be prominent again.

Veterans #7 Military Law and #8 Salute the Soldier look the best of the others.

$10 win/$30 show: #3 First Constitution

Rocket Picks : Oaklawn Park, Gulfstream Park, and Santa Anita Park for January 13, 2023
By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s get another big Friday of racing kicked off today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Santa Anita and Oaklawn Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s GO!

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

Gulfstream Park January 13, 2023

Race 6: Maiden Special Weight

#6 Fifty One Fifty was second at this level and over this track last time out. He has an experience edge over this group today as well. #7 Khozeiress was a decent second on debut and should move forward off of that race today. His trainer is having a good meet so far at Gulfstream Park.

Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming
freestar

#2 Mouillage runs off of a brief freshening today, while also getting what looks to be some class relief in this spot. Having Chad Brown on his side is also a big plus. #3 Bay Street Money goes for three in a row today after back to back solid win on the Kentucky circuit. He fits in well with this group today.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#1 Nitrous Channel runs second off of the layoff today after running second at this level last time out. Expect an improved start, as he will look to take this field gate to wire. #2 Palace Kitten gets back in a distance where he should run well. He can pull the upset if the top choice does not show up with his best effort.

Race 9: Claiming

#6 Krypton was solid last time when running on the synthetic surface for the first time at this level. With improvement, he is the horse to beat today. #10 Beauty Amazed runs off of a long layoff in this spot, but gets back to the synthetic surface, which is where we will see this horse at his best.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (January 13)

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday with 10-races from 11:00 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens with six of the twelve racing for the very first time. After a promising trial, (7) STAR FURY debuted over this distance on December 11th and having settled midfield, worked home well for 2nd place. He was well beaten by a good winner but should have derived benefit from the experience and he looks the one to beat here. (5) MORNING FLOW made his first appearance over 1000M on December 9th and was on pace throughout ultimately coming home in 3rd. He should have come on for that and with some natural improvement can be in the mix here. Among the first timers, (10) ROCK POWER is the standout. He won a December trial in a good time when running on pace and he can put in a bold showing first up here. (4) U PING and (6) HAERANG JANGGUN among others in the frame.
Selections (7) Star Fury (5) Morning Flow (10) Rock Power (4) U Ping
Next Best 6, 2
Fast Start 3, 4, 5, 10

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

After an inauspicious debut in November, (4) BLACK VOLT returned on December 9th and put in a much better run for 2nd over 1000M when midfield and then handy. The additional trip shouldn’t be an issue and he can go one better today. (2) DAHAMKKEDALLIJA debuted in that December 9th race and after a shaky start veritably flew home for 3rd behind Black Volt. He should be better for that run, the extra 300M should suit and plenty will back him to overturn the form on Black Volt. (10) JEOLDAE BOSS has a 3rd and a 4th from his latest two, the latter in a good time over 1200M. He is done no favours by the draw but can be a danger here. (5) UNMATCHED has run 5th in both starts so far, settling back and running on and should be aiming to better that here. Solitary debut-maker (9) THEIA has been through several trials, posting fair times, and this isn’t intimidating company to debut in.
Selections (4) Black Volt (2) Dahamkkedallija (10) Jeoldae Boss (5) Unmatched
Next Best 9, 1
Fast Start 8, 10, 11, 12

Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Tricky race. (4) GOODY will probably be favourite based on the 3rd and 2nd place finishes he has secured at 1200M. Last time out he drew wide and didn’t feature until late on but he comes into a better gate today and there isn’t much in the way of early speed so he may get an easier run. He has as much chance as any. (3) PLAY THE INDY was a much-improved 2nd last time when second-up following eight months out. He should be on pace here and may be peaking fitness wise. (7) TOP FRIEND has shown steady progress across the outings so far. He has gone well back on each occasion before running on and the slight step up in trip may be in his favour. (5) JEONGMUN CHITA and (6) SPECIAL JOHN among others in at least the placing hunt.
Selections (4) Goody (3) Play The Indy (7) Top Friend (5) Jeongmun Chita
Next Best 6, 2
Fast Start 1, 2, 3, 4

Busan Race 4: Class 6 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

(2) ARTHUR KING IJI was a beaten favourite over 1400M on December 16th when on pace and leading for much of the way. He comes up further in trip today and from a good draw should be on pace or handy and he is very much worth another chance. (10) DALLILLAEYO has improved across three starts so far and has finished off his races very well. He looks like he needs a but of distance and the step up to the mile can suit. That could be the case too for (11) YEOSU TORNADO. He is yet to finish better than 4th in eleven appearances but he has shown signs recently of figuring things out and can be challenging late here. (8) HAMAN BAEKISAN enters off a runner-up finish over this distance on December 9th and with the same apprentice jockey keeping the weight down, can go close again. (1) INDIE BULPAE is the wildcard, returning to action more than six months after his sole race start.
Selections (2) Arthur King Iji (10) Dallillaeyo (11) Yeosu Tornado (8) Haman Baekisan
Next Best 1, 12
Fast Start 2, 4, 10, 12

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(8) YEONGGWANGUI ACE ran out a gate to wire winner over this distance at what for him was start number two on December 4th. He comes up in class today but the Hansen colt looks to have plenty of scope for more improvement and he will be the one to beat. (1) NICE DAY almost went all the way over 1300M at this class on December 11th, ultimately being passed in the closing stages for a narrow loss. He’s back in trip today to the distance at which he picked up his only win so far and from a good draw he should be on pace and can be in this a long way. (3) TAP STAR races for the first time since last July but he looked well when making all in a trial on Christmas Eve and if he can bring that form to the races, he can be competitive in this company. (7) HANGANG SAVER and the up in class (10) HANEUL SEUNGNI are among plenty of others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (8) Yeonggwangui Ace (1) Nice Day (3) Tap Star (7) Hangang Saver
Next Best 10, 11
Fast Start 1, 8, 10, 11

(5) FANTASTIC DAY ran out a very good winner on debut over 1000M on December 23rd when only fairly away but quickly on top and then running away from the field. He comes up in class and also in trip, but both can be overcome and he can maintain his 100% record here. It won’t necessarily be easy though. (11) GOLDEN POINT is yet to win in ten attempts but he has no fewer than eight to-five finishes. He has the fastest time among those who have tackled the distance before and is tactically versatile so the wide draw shouldn’t be too problematic. He has a chance. (2) ETERNAL ACE ran 5th to Golden Point’s 4th when they faced each other at class and distance on December 11th. At the start before, he made all to win at 1300M at class 6 level. From a good draw, he should be right in this. (4) GREAT MISS and (3) AREUMDAUN INYEON among others in the frame.
Selections (5) Fantastic Day (11) Golden Point (2) Eternal Ace (4) Great Miss
Next Best 3, 7
Fast Start 5, 6, 10, 12

Busan Race 7: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

At his latest start in the Breeders’ Cup champion juvenile race over 1400M, (9) BARAMBARAM got shuffled back in the pack early and from then on was unable to make an impact. His form prior to that had been strong though, including beating a couple of today’s rivals on his way to 4th place at this class and distance in November. Back into shallower waters today, he is the one to beat. (4) DOCTOR PENTAGON is yet to win in thirteen attempts but has been largely consistent with eight top five finishes. An apprentice jockey takes his weight right down here and he is not without a chance. (11) MAIN BRIDGE too comes in very nicely weighted under an apprentice claim. He comes up to this distance for the first time and it can suit. (5) HAENAM JJANGDOL and the up in class (10) CUQUENAN are among others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (9) Barambaram (4) Doctor Pentagon (11) Main Bridge (5) Haenam Jjangdol
Next Best 10, 2
Fast Start 1, 2, 5, 10

Busan Race 8: Class 4 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

(5) SEOBU BIGSTEP comes rapidly up in class having won two from four so far. His latest was over 1400M when he lead from gate to wire and while the time wasn’t fast, he had previously shown speed at shorter. The additional trip shouldn’t be a problem and he can win again. (1) DOCTOR PERSIA enters in very solid form with two runner-up finishes and a 3rd place from his last three outings at 1400M, 1800M and 1600M. He comes down in the weights here, draws much better and will have plenty of support. (8) YOUNG BOSS comes up in class and distance following back-to-back wins over 1400M at class 5 level. He carries his fair share of weight but he can measure up in this company. (2) RAON THE FIGHTING and (10) DEMON SPY are among others to consider.
Selections (5) Seobu Bigstep (1) Doctor Persia (8) Young Boss (2) Raon The Fighting
Next Best 10, 3
Fast Start 4, 5, 6, 11

Busan Race 9: Class 4 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

(5) STAR MATTA beat three of these on his way to a strong 2nd place finish over this distance in a valuable race on December 18th when handy throughout and only beaten by the useful Haenam Hammer. He is similarly weighted here and from a kind draw, he may have too much. (3) KING BROTHER and (7) KING GRACE finished 3rd and 4th respectively behind Star Matta in that December 18th race, the former settling handy with the latter going back and running on. The pair of them may prove to be the biggest dangers here. (6) GUARDIAN ANGEL comes in off a smart class and distance 2nd place on December 23rd when she had some of today’s rivals behind him. She went right back that day and then ran on but may be ridden further forward here and is not without a chance. (2) ALL CROWN among others in at least the placing hunt.
Selections (5) Star Matta (3) King Brother (7) King Grace (6) Guardian Angel
Next Best 2, 12
Fast Start 3, 6, 10, 12

(9) GEUMA PASSIONATE enters here a perfect three from three having won all in fine style and all at this distance. He comes up in class here but is down in the weights and has every chance of maintaining his 100% record. This is his stiffest test to date though. (4) AGAIN TOUCH saw her own winning streak end at three when beaten into a very close 2nd over this distance on December 23rd having led almost to the line. She will be disputing the early lead with Geuma Passionate and with a better draw, could well come home on top. (7) SANGSEUNG BOY is putting together a string of wins of his own. It currently stands at two following back-to-back victories over 1400M, most recently at this class. He has had twelve weeks off so comes in fresh and can go close here. Last start winners (8) YEONGGWANGUI START and (10) DOCTOR CAESAR are among others to take into account.
Selections (9) Geuma Passionate (4) Again Touch (7) Sangseung Boy (8) Yeonggwangui Start

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (8) Papa Jojo returns to a claimer and seems poised for a winning effort. (2) Covert Kat will welcome a return to turf. (5) Testa has not raced in more than a year but is working nicely for his comeback. (12) Jerry’s Turn wound up with a tough post but has been consistent at this level. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-8-12.
4th race – (7) Bee by the Sea missed by a half-length in a good effort last time and should reach the winner’s circle here. (3) High Press should appreciate the added distance here. (9) Game Boy Benny has some speed and could be tough to catch. (8) Souper Success ships in from Woodbine and is worth a look. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-7-8-9. Doubles: 3-7-8-9 with 3-4-5-12.
5th race – (5) War Strategy (C) was bet down from 5-2 to 9-5 and settled for second. Makes amends here. (3) My Man Flint seeks a third straight win and should be the main rival. (12) Regal Speaker fits nicely here but drew a tough post. (4) Nantasket Beach should perk up back on turf. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5-12.
7th race – (2) Mouillage was a close fourth for Chad Brown at Keeneland and figures to work out a winning trip here. (5) English Bee has been running in stakes and will enjoy the class relief in his return to the races. (8) Breaking the Rules has late kick and will be a factor in the stretch run. (6) Sky’s Not Falling has some speed and can make his presence felt. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-6-8. Doubles: 2-5-6-8 with 1-2-3-4.
8th race – (1) Nitrous Channel can put his speed to full use from the rail and may not look back. (3) Bourbon Creed won his debut and should be a top contender here. (4) Kissalot may respond to the turnback to a sprint. (2) Palace Kitten had a rough trip last time and can make amends here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3. Exacta: 1-3 over 2-4 and 2-4 over 1-3.

Jan. 12, 2023

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race [Md 20000, 1 mi] – (1) Candlestick Maker moved from turf to dirt and rallied for the best finish of her career when she was neck behind the top spot in a similar race at Aqueduct at the end of November. (4) Alwajd was third in her second race following a layoff. She will drop down another notch. (5) Tekila has a lot of chances at this level and has seven top three finishes in her 17 starts. (6) Frosty Invasion gets blinkers on as she moves from NY-bred maiden claimers for the first time.
2nd race [Clm 25000 N2L, 1 mi] – (3) Brisky Frolic gets blinkers on for her third start after a layoff and drops out of a starter allowance where she was overmatched. She was an easy front-end winner of a $40,000 maiden claimer. She is expected to be on the lead as she moves to an appropriate race choice. (1) Dancing Sophia broke her maiden in a $20,000 claimer and then was fourth and third in a pair of starter allowances. (2) In Traffic got her first career victory last time out in a $30,000 claimer. (4) Run Devil moved to the New York barn of George Weaver from Florida and has made two improved starts at Aqueduct including a narrow head loss in a similar spot to this condition.
3rd race [Md 20000, 7F] – (3) Warrior Richard drops down to this low maiden claiming level after a fifth and a second where he was well bet both times. (2) Scootscoot was third behind the top choice in his last start that was for a $30,000 tag. (4) El Gran Cuyaya was sixth in his debut in a $40,000 maiden claimer. (6) Stormandy makes his second start following his debut in a maiden special weight against a strong field back in October for Charlie Baker who has strong stats with horses coming from layoffs of 61 to 180 days.
4th race [Alw 50000s, 1 mi] – (1) Sa Foradada ships up from Fair Hills after a pair of second-place finishes at this level at Aqueduct. (2) Alpine Queen had the lead in a starter allowance and battled down the stretch losing by a neck. (3) Diamond Collector was second in a $50,000 open claimer in her second start after a long layoff for John Toscano who claimed her two races back. (4) My First Love won a $30,000 beaten claiming race by more than three lengths going the one-turn mile at the Big A.Best bets: Candlestick Maker (1st); Brisky Frolic (2nd). Best value: Warrior Richard (3rd); So Foradada (4th).

# 4 CRYPTO MINING 2/1

# 5 DR. RICKY A. 5/1

# 3 BROKEN MACHINE 10/1

CRYPTO MINING is my choice. His 58 average has this colt with among the most competitive speed figures in this race. Will almost certainly go to the lead and may never look back. Donaldson has one of the most competitive winning percentages in this group with entries running at this distance and surface. DR. RICKY A. - First timers trained by Donaldson have proved to be successful. Excellent chance to hit the wire ahead of this group of horses given sire's 1st time starter figures who win at a 15 percent rate. BROKEN MACHINE - Will likely be one of the front-runners of the bunch going into the halfway point of the competition.

#4 RUN DEVIL (ML=6/1)
#6 SYNONYMOUS (ML=12/1)

RUN DEVIL - This mare is in fine condition, having run a strong race on December 18th, finishing third. The most recent figure of 65 is the best last race speed fig in the field. SYNONYMOUS - Samuel was aboard this mare last time out and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Certainly on edge for a good one today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BRISKY FROLIC (ML=9/5), #1 DANCING SOPHIA (ML=2/1), #2 IN TRAFFIC (ML=4/1),

BRISKY FROLIC - Had to show me much more last time around the track. Never made much of an impact. This chalk horse may be out of shape without any recent morning drills. DANCING SOPHIA - She showed not much at all in the last race. IN TRAFFIC - The victory on Dec 15th probably isn't good enough to beat these today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Putting our cash on #4 RUN DEVIL to win. Have to have odds of at least 9/5 or better though

#7 BARRAGE (ML=4/1)
#11 NOT PHAR NOW (ML=6/1)
#12 REGAL SPEAKER (ML=8/1)

BARRAGE - This horse is at the top in earnings per start. He looks solid in today's event. I like that most recent outing on December 16th at Gulfstream Park where he ended up third. Came home fast in the last race at Gulfstream Park. That type of move bodes well for his chances right here in this race. NOT PHAR NOW - Speed figs on the grass point to this animal as a legit contender. Has the best in the field for this distance/surface. I like that last contest on December 22nd at Gulfstream Park where he finished fourth. Jock jumped on this gelding's back for the first ride on December 22nd. Should be in touch with the horse even better this race. Coming off a fourth place finish at Gulfstream Park, some may pass this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable morning line odds today. This horse didn't run well on the soft turf in his last start at Gulfstream Park. You should overlook that showing. REGAL SPEAKER - May be extremely hard to beat this racer on the grass today. Last time out scored a nice turf number, the highest of any of these animals. Nice return on investment for this rider and trainer twosome. A definite class advantage goes to this horse. A good sign he will be very competitive in this turf race. A repeat of that last race on November 11th where he garnered a fig of 97 looks lofty enough to win in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 WAR STRATEGY (ML=7/2), #4 NANTASKET BEACH (ML=6/1),

WAR STRATEGY - This entrant hasn't been on the track since December 16th. Not even any drills. Don't believe this runner will make a winning move in today's event. That last speed figure was substandard when compared with today's class figure. NANTASKET BEACH - 6/1 is just too low of a price to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back races. The fig last out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this horse as a likely underlay.

# 1 ENTWINE (IRE) 7/2

# 8 PACIFIC PRINCESS 3/1

# 9 COOL FRONT 8/1

I've got to go with ENTWINE (IRE). Has to be considered versus this field displaying decent figures recently and an average speed rating of 83 under similar conditions. The average class figure of 78 makes this one hard to beat. Displays the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 78 speed figure which is one of the top in this group of horses in this race. PACIFIC PRINCESS - Has performed very well lately in route races, posting a nifty 83 avg speed figure. Is a solid choice - given the 83 speed figure from her most recent race. COOL FRONT - Should definitely be given a chance here if only for the very good Equibase Speed Fig recorded in the last race.
