Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Saturday, January 21
Posted on January 20, 2023 by David Aragona

RACE 5: MY FRIENDS BEER (#6)

Optic Way (#8) looks like a deserving favorite at first glance, as he’s coming off the best speed figure that he’s achieved in a while and has been claimed by a barn that has great stats using this move. Yet it’s a little strange that this horse hasn’t run back for two months, and Jose Camejo doesn’t appear to be as dangerous recently as when he first appeared on this circuit. Overall, he’s just 2 for 12 (13%, $0.96 ROI) first off the claim at NYRA. I’m a bit skeptical that this horse can run back to that last performance and there are plenty of other options to consider. Cool Quartet (#3) is another runner who goes out for a dangerous trainer, as he makes his second start off the switch to Rob Atras. He did face a much better field last time, but I don’t love his prior form at Finger Lakes and feel he would need to improve to beat this group. Dark Storm (#5) interests me more. He’s another coming off a brief layoff, but he was in solid form when last seen. He did well to wear down favorite Its All Relevant two back and then ran a good second at this level last time when mildly impeded by his entrymate through the lane. Something has obviously kept him off the track recently, but he returns with no drop, and gets Turkey’s champion jockey aboard. My top pick is My Friends Beer (#6). Perhaps the unfamiliar connections will scare some players away, but I really liked his effort last time. He made a game run through traffic, altering course in the stretch to take a good shot at the superior winner Winter Pool. That result may look like an outlier, but he had excuses prior to that. He’s never been too fond of wet tracks, so I don’t want to hold his two sloppy performances at Parx against him, and he was going the wrong distance back in November. This horse has plenty of back class and appears to be rounding back into top form. He closed from far back last time but does possess a bit more tactical speed than that.

RACE 6: LOST IN ROME (#3)

I have mixed feelings about O’Trouble (#2), who could go favored here as he makes his first start off the claim for David Jacobson. The Jacobson horses have been performing better in recent weeks, and this horse is a neck shy of having won his last three starts. He beat a weaker field last time, but was much the best that day as Jose Gomez nearly botched the ride, getting him in trouble early before finding a clear path along the inside. He has the speed figures to win at this level, but his best performances have generally come against cheaper foes. Quick Return (#1) and Durkin’s Call (#6) both competed in a $25k claiming race back in early December, where they filled out the trifecta behind Jemography. Durkin’s Call ran the slightly better race that day and came back with a deceptively game performance against a much tougher field last time going a mile. I think he’s a threat if the pace comes apart, but he’s never been the most reliable win candidate. I’m going for a bigger price with Lost in Rome (#3). This horse has really woken up since getting claimed for just $10k by trainer William Younghans. He was game to get the job done in November, and then showed a new dimension, rallying from off the pace to win that starter allowance over O’Trouble two back. I won’t hold his last against him, since that was a very ambitious spot. He’s now dropping back down to a more realistic class level and I don’t mind him turning back in distance with so much pace signed on. Heman Harkie has ridden him well, and the price should be fair.

RACE 8: FLIGHT TO SHANGHAI (#4)

I certainly respect Betsy Blue (#5), who has been one of the most consistent racehorses on the NYRA circuit for the past two years. She’s steadily improved for Linda Rice and really seems to have taken her game to a new level since last summer at Saratoga. She didn’t get the right trip in the Iroquois two back when she registered a rare off the board finish, but she bounced back with a better effort in the Go For Wand. Turned back to her preferred sprint distance in the Garland of Roses, she delivered a strong stretch rally to run past the talented Beguine in the late stages. A similar performance makes her tough to beat, but she’s also going to be a very short price now that her best form has once again been exposed. It’s also unclear if she’s going to get the same pace setup that she enjoyed last time, as the horses who you would expect to be forwardly placed aren’t exactly that fast. Miss T Too (#2) is perhaps the quickest of them all early, but it’s been a little while since she’s been sent to the front and she doesn’t have the most aggressive rider on her back. She had some real sprint talent early in her career, but a series of setbacks have derailed her. I considered putting her on top, but I found another who may offer better value. Flight to Shanghai (#4) obviously doesn’t sport as strong a resume as some others in here, but I thought she took a subtle but significant step forward off the claim for Horacio De Paz last time. Sent off at 72-1 in that Go For Wand, she applied serious pressure to the impressive winner Dr B in the early stages and was still in the mix at the quarter pole before fading. While she hasn’t run as fast as Betsy Blue, she earned a strong 110 TimeformUS Speed Figure for that last performance. Furthermore, Horacio De Paz is 7 for 17 (41%, $3.74 ROI) second off the claim on dirt over the past 5 years. And at NYRA tracks, he’s 5 for 9 (56%, $6.08 ROI) with 3 seconds. I expect her to get an aggressive ride from Jorge Vargas and the slight turnback to 7 furlongs should suit her. I believe she’s the biggest threat to Betsy Blue and the price should be fair.

The Jury: Bets and fades for Jan. 21
TwinSpires Staff

This weekend's action is highlighted by the "Road to the Derby Day" program at Fair Grounds, featuring the Lecomte (G3). James Scully, Vance Hanson, and Ashley Anderson have their say on that card and others in this week's TwinSpires Jury discussion.
What is your best bet?

James Scully: #4 Spartan Queen (6-1) in the sixth race at Fair Grounds Saturday. In her Dec. 31 career debut, the Medaglia d’Oro filly raced in spots and traveled wide before finishing with good energy to be a clear second to Amber Cascade, who will contest the Silverbulletday later on the program. Spartan Queen netted solid Brisnet numbers in the 1 1/16-mile race and appears to be training forwardly since, recording a quick five-furlong drill for Michelle Lovell, and I expect her to move forward with a strong showing in her second outing.

Vance Hanson: Saturday's third race at Fair Grounds, a maiden event for three-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles, looks like a good spot for second-time starter #8 Mo Hope (5-1). The son of the long-winded Mo Town was doing his best running at the end of his six-furlong debut and, while though no threat to the winner, he finished a clear and promising second. The Paul McGee trainee appears as if he'll relish the additional ground here and should show natural improvement with that initial experience behind him.

Ashley Anderson: #4 Paco’s Pico (4-1) in Gulfstream’s ninth race on Saturday, a six-furlong allowance optional claimer for four-year-olds. The Candy Ride gelding finished first or second in his last four at today’s distance, most recently winning by 1 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong allowance optional claimer while posting a 99 Brisnet Speed rating, the highest speed figure at today’s distance among the field. He followed up that win by stretching out to seven furlongs at Gulfstream but was bumped at the start and ultimately evened out inside the final furlong for show. He can bounce back with the cutback to six furlongs, a distance from which he owns a 5-2-2-1 record.

Who is the horse to fade?

JS: #4 Hypersport (7-5) in the fourth race at Oaklawn Park Saturday. The four-year-old filly has not been a serious threat, finishing second in three of her last four outings, recording four seconds and a third from nine career outings, and the early/presser had everything her own way in the lone win. Hypersport has a dangerous speed rival to her inside and looks vulnerable at short odds.

VH: #2 Manny Wah (9-5) is the early choice in the Duncan F. Kenner S. at Fair Grounds, a race he won two years ago. But even with the relative modesty of the competition, he's been too inconsistent a visitor to the winner's circle for my taste to like at such a short price. However, this stand is dependent on the race staying on the turf, as scheduled. If it's rained off, Manny Wah figures to be no better than third choice if the also-eligibles Surveillance and Bango happen to draw in.

AA: #2 Charlie’s Penny (3-1) opened as a slight morning line favorite in the Marie G. Krantz Memorial S., Race 5 on Fair Grounds’ Saturday card, but the five-year-old has raced just once on turf, finishing second when sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs. The Race Day mare joined the barn of Chris Block late last year and has since run twice on dirt at seven furlongs and a mile and 70 yards, winning the former by 1 1/2 lengths and coming home third by 2 1/2 lengths when stretching out to a route. Block is just a 10% winner with horses transitioning from dirt to turf, and Charlie’s Penny has never raced as far as 1 1/16 miles. I’ll instead back #3 Lake Lucerne (7-2), who failed as the favorite last out when running near today’s distance at this track, finishing three-quarters of a length in third with a belated rally. The Dubawi mare can rebound here for Brendan Walsh, a 24% winner with beaten favorites.

What else is worth noting?

JS: The undercard of the Lecomte (G3) at Fair Grounds always features productive maiden special weight races, and six maiden events for open three-year-olds will be offered Saturday. In the second race, #4 Evergrande, a $1.1 million filly by Uncle Mo, will make her career debut for Steve Asmussen with a recent half-mile bullet workout in tow. #4 L J’s Emma, an Into Mischief filly who appears to be training forwardly for Eddie Kenneally, is listed as the 3-1 choice and will race with Luis Saez in the fourth race. In the seventh race, Asmussen will be represented by #5 City Nights and #3 First Defender, a pair of well-bred colts who figure to attract support in their first career outing. And in the 10th race, the Hall of Fame trainer will send out firster #6 Kauai Dan, a Stonestreet Stables homebred Quality Road colt who is out of multiple Grade 2-winning juvenile Kauai Katie.

VH: I'm typically not a big follower or believer in most morning lines, though I find it interesting that #4 L J's Emma (3-1) was made the lukewarm early choice for Fair Grounds' fourth race, a six-furlong maiden for three-year-old fillies, especially since trainers Brad Cox and Steve Asmussen also have first-time starters in the field. Nonetheless, L J's Emma might be a filly to keep an eye on. Not only is she by leading sire Into Mischief, she turned in a flattering five-furlong breeze on Dec. 29 (a bullet in :59.20) and hails from a barn (Eddie Kenneally) that has struck consistently from limited starters this meet (3 for its first 8). Luis Saez will be aboard, too.

AA: Kentucky Derby hopeful Instant Coffee and stablemate Tapit’s Conquest may be a primary focus at Fair Grounds on Saturday in the Lecomte, but trainer Brad Cox has a handful of other horses to watch earlier in the day who may come into play on the Derby and Kentucky Oaks trails. In Race 9 on Saturday’s Fair Grounds card, Tapit Shoes, a Tapit son by a Flower Alley mare, will race in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claimer, into which Tapit’s Conquest has been cross-entered. In Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) (offered from noon ET on Friday until Sunday at 6 p.m.), Tapit Shoes was revealed as a 50-1 choice in the pool, while Tapit’s Conquest was listed at 99-1. Banishing (a 40-1 choice from the barn of Brendan Walsh) will also compete in Race 9. As for Kentucky Oaks candidates, Cox will race 8-5 morning line favorite Chop Chop in the Silverbulletday — which will award Oaks qualifying points — but has another hopeful in The Alys Look, second in her stakes debut in the Untapable at Fair Grounds on Dec. 26. Chop Chop will drop in class after finishing last as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and is likely set for a big race, but if The Alys Look manages to play spoiler here, she’ll be one to track on the road to the Oaks.

Great Britain Preview: Spot Plays Jan. 21, 2023
Alastair Bull

Cold weather in Britain means one of the main jumps meets of the weekend at Ascot, featuring the Clarence House Chase (G1) and Mares’ Hurdle (G2), has been abandoned. For now the Haydock meet, which features four Grade 2 events, is still on, though things aren’t looking great there either.

Given these doubts, the best meet for fans of U.K. racing to bet on this weekend may be the Lingfield Polytrack card. Eight races are scheduled, the most notable of which are a 105-rating handicap for fillies and mares and a 95-rating sprint handicap.

By Vance Hanson

1. NORAH G (8-1) – Hot barn has a nice filly on their hands here, though there’s a big difference between what she’s been facing in the state-bred ranks and this open company spot; needed almost 1:15 to negotiate 6f in the Louisiana Futurity last time over a slow-playing track, and even there she wasn’t exactly as dominant as bettors thought she would be at odds of 3-10; class hike and inexperience around two turns appear significant hurdles.

2. COTTON CANDY ANNIE (20-1) – The most experienced member of the field with eight starts behind her, and thus the most exposed; spent much of her time in the maiden ranks facing lesser in auction restricted events before graduating for a $50K tag, and though she subsequently took advantage of a weak allowance group in the slop, her no-show in the Untapable S. probably sums up her relative talents; looking elsewhere.

3. HAYUNEVANO (8-1) – After poking her head in front after six furlongs in the Untapable, she readily gave way through the stretch and finished a well-beaten fourth in a strung out field; although not a huge step down from her wide-margin maiden win, it does raise doubts whether she is classy enough to turn in a more competitive effort; on the plus side, she’s had much more time in between starts; she barely had more than two weeks going into the Untapable, but has had nearly four in the interim.

4. THE ALYS LOOK (3-1) – After a couple modest tries in Kentucky last fall, she’s upped her game since arriving in New Orleans; pummeled maiden foes in her first attempt here Dec. 1 and then came back 3 1/2 weeks later to finish a creditable and clear second to Pretty Mischievous in the Untapable; that race wasn’t overly quick, figure-wise, but it does mark her as perhaps the main threat to stablemate Chop Chop.

5. CHOP CHOP (8-5) – Despite her no-show in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), she’s the filly to beat here; although both prior wins were on turf, she gave presumptive champion Wonder Where a big scare in the final strides of the Alcibiades (G1) two back, evidence she can handle dirt just as well as turf; Cox reportedly satisfied with her preparation for this and is going forward as if latest was an aberration; we’ll find out, but backers should expect significantly less than 8-5.

6. AMBER CASCADE (6-1) – Won the first division of a Dec. 31 maiden by nearly four lengths (returning rival Forest Chimes won the other even more convincingly); it was her first start around two turns and with Lasix, both of which might have helped, but she won’t have the benefit of the latter here; the downside is that it was her third start, and she had previously fallen short facing $50,000 maiden claimers; prefer others.

7. FOREST CHIMES (4-1) – Her debut on New Year’s eve at Fair Grounds couldn’t have gone any better; cold on the board at 13-1, she won off as if she were an odds-on favorite, crossing the wire 7 1/2 lengths clear of nine rivals; this is obviously a significant step up in class and a relatively short three-week turnaround, but this daughter of Tonalist seemingly has a lot of potential left to be tapped; consider.

Handicapper's Corner: 2023 Lecomte Stakes (G3)
2023 Lecomte Stakes Analysis
By: Rowan Ward, Blinkers-Off

The Lecomte Stakes (G3) on Saturday is the second of four 2023 Kentucky Derby points races at Fair Grounds. The series started with the Gun Runner on December 26 and continues with the Risen Star (G2) and the Louisiana Derby (G2).

The race takes its name from Lecomte: an equine star of the 1850s, a half-sister to Saratoga stakes namesake Prioress, and the only horse to defeat the great Lexington. Though Lecomte was bred in Kentucky, he went to Louisiana as a yearling. He was named after his owner’s friend Ambrose Lecomte, a Louisiana landowner, and later gave a misspelled version of his name to the town of Lecompte, Louisiana.

The 2023 Lecomte Stakes drew a field of 8, competing for a $200,000 purse and Road to the Kentucky Derby points. Unlike in previous years, when only the top four finishers received points, this year the top five do. They will be allotted 20-8-6-4-2, assuming the horses are running without Lasix and are conditioned by Derby-eligible trainers. In this case, all eight horses are points eligible.

Though no Lecomte Stakes winner has yet gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, seven have won the Louisiana Derby, most recently International Star (2015). The race has been a particularly live Preakness prep in recent years; in the last ten years, two of its winners have gone on to win Baltimore’s most important race: Oxbow (2013) and War of Will (2019). Last year’s winner, Epicenter, went on to finish second in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. He won the Travers (G1) and is a finalist for Champion Three-Year-Old Male honors.

Saturday, January 21 - Fair Grounds

Race 14: Lecomte Stakes (G3), three-year-olds, one and one sixteenth miles on the dirt, post time 6:30pm CST

With rain in the forecast for Saturday, there is a good chance Two Phil’s can run right back to his smart victory in the Street Sense (G3) on October 30. His trainer Larry Rivelli is strong with layoff horses, and Two Phil’s himself routed the field in the Shakopee Juvenile off a two-month break last year. And that win came on a dry track, meaning this horse has some promise even if the rain does not fall. Two Phil’s has tactical speed from the outside, giving him a chance for a nice stalking trip, and his rider Jareth Loveberry is not only this horse’s regular rider (and Rivelli’s first call), but is winning prodigiously at the Far Grounds meet.

Instant Coffee is the likely favorite. He comes in from a victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club: interestingly enough, though four of the last ten Lecomte winners raced in the Kentucky Jockey Club, none of those recent Lecomte winners have finished better than third in that race. Still, it is a testament to how good that race is as a prep for the Lecomte, since it shows horses are ready to go two turns against classy company. Though there is a chance that the Lecomte pace will not be extremely fast, since other speed horses would have to step up to match Echo Again, Instant Coffee did prove in the Kentucky Jockey Club that he could finish smartly into a pace that was not particularly fast. Between that and the fact that trainer Brad Cox is winning at a 45% clip going into this race week, Instant Coffee should produce a good effort.

Though Echo Again hasn’t yet run back to his dazzling debut at Saratoga, and still has to answer the question of whether he can be effective at two turns, there are reasons this could be the spot he wakes up over that longer trip. In short, he looks like the speed of the speed. Early pace has been holding well at the Fair Grounds, and though there are some others in the field who have shown enough pace to be close, Echo Again is fast enough to make the lead and get clear unless one of the others finds a lot more early pace. Given that he comes into this second off the lay and his pedigree does bode well for two turns on both sides, he may just open up early and forget to stop for high-percentage trainer Steve Asmussen.

Selections:

#8 Two Phil’s (4-1)

#7 Instant Coffee (5-2)

#1 Echo Again (6-1)

Longshot: With rain in the forecast for Saturday, #2 Denington (8-1) has a good chance to step up. His maiden win came three starts back over a sloppy dirt track.

He does have tables to turn on Instant Coffee from the Kentucky Jockey Club two back, but he was beaten only 1

COMMENTS: BARRISTERS RIDE could be a live price as she has a lot of late kick and ran a little faster last out. QUEEN OF THE TEMPLE drops after running in a pair of graded stakes and has some decent workouts since. AUSTRALIA MIA makes her UD debut from Chile where she has six wins and a second in her last seven efforts. TIZ AN EDVENTURE has seven wins in her last nine races.

COMMENTS: SARAH HARPER rand the highest last race speed number in her last and could benefit from a little extra distance. HOT AND SULTRY has a pair of wins and seconds in her four career starts. IM THE BOSS OF ME likes 6 furlongs with three wins with a second and three thirds in nine races. PERFECT HAPPINESS really upped her pace through the first half mile in her last race.

COMMENTS: CHARLIES PENNY ran the highest last race speed figure and could up the number in her second race off the sidelines. LAKE LUCERNE ran a little better race internals last out and has brilliant late pace at times. WAVE OF GOODNESS just missed at this level last out and is another looking to improve in round two off the bench. FANCY MARTINI is an or nothing horse with three wins in eight races.

COMMENTS: TWO EMMYS has a win with a pair of seconds and a third in four at the distance. PRICE TALK is no more than a length from winning six in a row. SAILING SOLO has a lot of back class and will look to run back to his talent in the second race after more than a year in the barn. BIG AGENDA will be rolling late and improved her early race numbers last out

HAPPY AMERICAN is first time gelded and is likely to be in top form in his third race after a rest.

BROMLEY won both of his races pulling away from the field late.

Keeneland Select Derby Prep Hotlist - Lecomte Stakes - January 21
Jan. 20, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
The $200,000 Lecomte Stakes, Fair Grounds, Race 14
(7) Instant Coffee was a solid winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club while rallying wide. He has a late-running style that bodes well for his chances in a field that boasts several rivals with keen early speed. He’s trained by Brad Cox, who has done a great job of turning out Triple Crown-caliber runners the last few friends, and deserves top billing here. (1) Echo Again also hails from a top barn and figures to be part of the early pace after finishing third in the Springboard Mile. Drawing the rail figures to help this Steve Asmussen-trained 3-year-old who could go gate-to-wire here. (2) Denington was hurt by a wide trip when third in the Smarty Jones. Adds blinkers here and should be helped by the added distance. (8) Two Phil’s was an easy winner of the Street Sense Stakes, but that was in the slop. If he can avoid a wide trip from the outside post, he has the potential to be a main contender. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-8. Trifecta box: 1-2-7-8.

Gulfstream Park Hotlist - January 21
Jan. 20, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (6) Country Jewel (B)had a rough trip last time while racing wide. Deserves a second chance here while adding blinkers and dropping in class. (10) Never Been Wrong could be a factor in her belated career debut. (1) Ave Fenix might respond to the switch to turf. (12) Ria Formosa may pose a threat in the final furlong. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6-10-12.
3rd race – (5) Scramble was no worse than third in his three career starts and seems poised to post a maiden win. (1) Battlefield Park may perk up on turf. (4) Santorini lost by a neck on synthetics and should be able to handle turf. (8) Jeby rallied for second in his first try on turf and should not be ignored. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-8.
5th race – (5) She’s Mo Bubbly was an $825K purchase who finally makes her debut for Pletcher. Gets top billing here. (3) Sweet Curalina was third in her debut and can move forward in this spot. (1) Inviting should benefit from a rail trip. (6) Reaching Stride might perk up on dirt. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-5-6.
7th race – (9) El Socio (D) took a big drop from 7-1 to 7-2 then tired in the stretch. Might rebound with a class drop. (2) Ghostinyou faces weaker company and shapes up as the one to fear. (3) Royal Kitten could be a factor off the Walder claim. (8) Eyes of a Champion may be tough to catch in this spot. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-8-9.
9th race – (4) Paco’s Pico has been no worse than third in his last seven starts and seems best in this field. (7) Absolute Grit switches to Irad and should be the main competition. (3) Candy Man Rocket has been away for nearly a year but is training nicely for his comeback. (2) Living Water will be dangerous if he can duplicate his last effort. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-7. Exactas 4-7 over 2-3 and 2-3 over 4-7.

Aqueduct Hotlist - January 21

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
4th race [Clm 16000 N2L, 6F] – (5) America’s Pride was claimed for $50,000 from Brad Cox after a debut victory at Churchill Downs. She made one start at Saratoga and was then moved to the barn of Tom Morley. In this field, she is projected to be on the lead. (1) Afleet Arlene was claimed for $30,000 at Churchill in November by Linda Rice who drops her down to a winning level. (2) Darn That Song drops down in class and returns to the N2L condition where she was competitive in the only other time she raced at this level. (6) Sheza Rajun Cajun will need to use her early speed to be a contender.
7th race [NY, OC 45K/N2X, 7F] – (4) Who Hoo Thats Me has the blinkers come off after trying them last start for this colt that has top three finishes in 9 out of 12 races. (7) Excellent Timing is projected to get loose on the lead at a good distance at Aqueduct where he recorded both of his wins. (5) Big Engine will move back to NY-bred company by running for the $45,000 tag. Last seen he was a winner at this level. (1) Listentoyourheart moves to the barn of Ray Handal following an August layoff. He is a past NY-bred stakes winner.
8th race [Interborough, 7F] – (5) Betsy Blue won the Garland of Roses at the Big A last time when she rallied from last. In her career she has seven wins at Aqueduct and three of them were at seven furlongs. Her last two speed figures tower over this field. (3) Piece of My Heart was first or second in her last four starts in top allowance races at Aqueduct. Two weeks ago she was a winner on a sloppy track after a stalking trip. (2) Miss T Too ships up to New York from Kentucky for Michael McCarthy after a pair of third-place finishes in allowance races. She is projected to be on the lead in this small field. (4) Flight to Shanghai was claimed two races back by Horacio De Paz and tried the Go For Wand (G3) in her first start for the new trainer. Expect another improvement this time out.
9th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (9) Fast Boat to Skye (B) had a bad break in his second start on a sloppy track and rallied to get the place spot. (5) Wave Action (C) was away slowly in his debut and had to come from far behind to finish third after getting bet down from 8-1 to 6-1. (1) Slip Mahoney set the pace in his second career start on a sloppy track at Aqueduct and battled down the stretch to miss the win by a neck. (7) Crupi got some time off after his best finish in November when he was second going nine furlongs. This is clearly the easiest field that he has faced.
Best bets: Who Hoo Thats Me (7th); Betsy Blue (8th). Best value: America’s Pride (4th); Fast Boat to Skye (9th).

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | January 21, 2023
Jan. 20, 2023

Race 13 at Fair Grounds | Saturday January 21 | Post Time 7 PM Eastern
Louisiana Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $150,000 | One Mile and One Sixteenth | Four Year Old and Upward
Top contenders:
Intrepid Heart (3) had a fantastic 2022 campaign but you couldn’t really tell it by looking at his 1-7-0 record in nine races. Four were stakes races and his best efforts of the summer came in those when beaten a half-length in the Claiming Crown Jewel Stakes (106 Equibase Speed Figure) and beaten a nose in a third level allowance race (106 figure). He lost all chance in the Tenacious Stakes last month in which three others in here ran, with a very awkward start that saw Intrepid Heart break last of 11 and really have no chance thereafter. Also, and perhaps more importantly, he had taken blinkers off for that race but had won them for a long time prior to that, particularly last January through March when he ran three “A” races in a row at Fair Grounds including a four length win and nose defeat. Those were actually his best efforts of the year because he earned 110 and 11 figures which would win here if repeated. With Saez getting on I think that’s entirely possible so opening at 8 to 1 Intrepid Heart gets top billing.

Forza Di Oro (7) was one of those which ran in the Tenacious Stakes over the track last month, finishing third after moving up to lead mid-race then tiring. That occurred because he had been off for four months, but now making his second start off a layoff, and with a very strong five furlong workout coming into the race, Forza Di Oro has a big shot to run back to his best efforts which were three straight wins including the Grade 3 Discovery Stakes.

Zozos (8) won the first two starts of his career last January and February, a sprint here at Fair Grounds then a two-turn race at Oaklawn. He finished a fine second to Epicenter in the Louisiana Derby after that but only managed 10th in the Kentucky Derby. Rested a full seven months, Zozos returned last month and won his comeback around two turns with no prep first and is set to improve off that effort.

Win bets:
Intrepid Heart (3) to win at odds of 5 to 2 or more.
Forza Di Oro and Zozos, both trained by Brad Cox, could be considered for win bets at 3 to 1 or more but that appears unlikely.

Exactas:
Box Intrepid Heart (3), Forza Di Oro (7) and Zozos (8)

Intrepid Heart (3), Forza Di Oro (7) and Zozos (8) over Intrepid Heart (3), Forza Di Oro (7), Zozos (8), Run Classic (2), Happy American (5) and Mr. Wireless (9)

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 1: Post: 12:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Percolate
Backups/savers: 5-Foothill

Forecast: Percolate has developed into a consistent turf miler with rising speed figures, and after a clever win vs. first-level allowance foes at Del Mar in November the Michael McCarthy-trained colt returns to the $50,000 starter’s allowance level with the likelihood of a repeat score. The Irish-bred colt has good tactical speed and projects to enjoy an ideal second flight trip with every chance to take control when the pressure is turned on. Foothill launches a comeback for trainer Doug O’Neill and looks like a live item following a smart series of workouts at San Luis Rey Downs that should have him fit and ready. The son of Vronsky has numbers that fit and could easily be a better type this time around. We suggest you include him somewhere on your ticket, at least as a backup.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 2: Post: 12:29 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Goldenspa; 4-Stop and a Tres
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: 3-Goldenspa offers no wagering value at or near his morning line of 6/5 but seems the logical top pick after being pitched too high in a straight maiden grass sprint at Del Mar in mid-November. The son of Goldencents finished a solid second at this level over this track and distance two runs back and a repeat of that effort probably should be good enough to handle this modest maiden $40,000 field. Stop and a Tres shows steadily rising speed figures, and with another forward move he should be the one to fear most. The work tab is healthy, so we’re expecting the Into Mischief gelding to be within striking range throughout and make his presence felt through the lane.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 3: Post: 12:59 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Our Shining Light
Backups/savers: 6-Who’s Candy; 3-New York Dreams

Forecast: Our Shining Light ran extremely well sprinting over the local lawn in his U.S. debut last fall when a willing runner-up in a better-than-average race for the level and then ventured north to graduate with authority in straight maiden company two-turning over the all-weather surface. The Jonathan Wong-trained gelding returns to Arcadia for this starter optional claimer while returning to grass and shortening to an abbreviated sprint and seems quite capable of scoring again following a bullet workout up north and the switch to Frankie. At 4-1 on the morning line, he offers solid value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics. Also worth including on your ticket – at least in a backup role – are Who’s Candy and New York Dreams. The former, second in his last pair, is fast on figures and will be quite competitive with a repeat of his sharp runner-up try here last fall, while the latter graduated with conviction against a softer group on the front end over the local lawn in November and may offer some price value at 8-1 on the morning line.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 4: Post: 1:29 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Rosy Edge; 6-Alex’s Girl
Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Bottom rung maiden claiming older fillies and mares compete in this six furlong main track sprint that boils down to two main contenders. Rosy Edge earned much better than par speed figures when finishing third and then fourth, respectively, in two tougher maiden claimers last summer and returns in a very soft spot for a barn that has solid stats with layoff runners. If she’s ad good now and she was then, the daughter of First Samurai should handle this assignment, and at anywhere near her morning line of 4-1 will offer attractive wagering value. Alex’s Girl, a respectable third in her only outing last April in a maiden $50,000 affair, lands top rider Juan Hernandez and shows a nice six furlong breeze in 1:13 flat last month to have her fit and ready. She could very well be a better type off the bench. We’ll give ‘Edge top billing but both should be included in rolling exotic play.

Forecast: 3-Smileforme looked good winning in a slightly softer spot at Golden Gate Fields last month and if he can duplicate that all-weather performance over the local dirt strip the veteran Smiling Tiger gelding can score right back. In the frame in five of six career starts over the Santa Anita main track, the Jonathan Wong-trained six-year-old picks up Frankie and seems fairly solid in a low level claiming affair. King of Speed is worth tossing in for protection. The son of Jimmy Creed drops to a realistic spot and is competitive on speed figures. He’s not particularly quick leaving the gate but if he can avoid trouble from the rail he should be the one to fear most.

RACE 6: Post: 2:29 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Roy C
Backups/savers: 5-The Key Is Unity; 4-Lottery Pick

Forecast: Roy C has been away since October of 2021 but his work tab at San Luis Rey Downs is healthy and may have him prepared for a winning performance in this moderate maiden $50,000 turf miler for older horses. The Peter Miller-trained gelding ran quite well over this course and distance as a 2-year-old when second (well clear of the rest) while earning a speed figure good enough to beat this field. The presence of leading rider Juan Hernandez is an obvious plus, as is the good inside draw that should guarantee an ideal ground-saving, pace-stalking trip. The Key Is Unity lacks tactical speed but has a grinding, late-running style that should eventually produce a winning performance at this level. He’s finished second in his last three starts under similar conditions so maybe today will be his day. Lottery Pick shows up in a seller for the first time and will greatly appreciate the softer competition. Freshened since November and training well for his return, the Peter Eurton-trained gelding is reunited with Flavian Prat and won’t have to improve much at all to be a serious late threat.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 7: Post: 2:59 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Big Swede
Backups/savers: 10-Nolo Contesto

Forecast: Big Swede is racing in good from, lands the favorable rail, retains top jockey Juan Hernandez, and projects to enjoy an ideal pace setting/prompting trip in race that promises to have soft to moderate early fractions. He finished a good second with a career top speed figure at this level last month and nothing more should be needed to handle this task. Nolo Contesto stretches out again but had the misfortunate of drawing the extreme outside post. Winless in almost four years, he’s certainly lacks punch when put to pressure but he’s a fit on numbers, so you may want to toss him in somewhere as a saver.
__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

RACE 8: Post: 3:29 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Australia Mia
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Australia Misa was a decent stayer in South America in group stakes company, though the quality of her competition must be considered suspect. She makes her U.S. debut off a six month layoff with series of steady drills that should have her fit enough, and in a field that otherwise seems well below par for the level let’s take a stand and go with the fresh face. The daughter of Street Sense reportedly has good tactical speed, and in a race that promises to be slowly run early she may be able land a spot galloping along while reasonably close to the front end. We have to think she’s a live item with Frankie taking the call, so at 5/2 on the morning line we’ll make this nine-time winning Chilean-bred mare a win play and rolling exotic single

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 9: Post: 3:50 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Army Star ; 1-Mister Beams
Backups/savers: 8-Crowning Gold

Forecast: Army Star has steadily rising speed figures and gets a break in the weights with the switch to promising bug boy Aguilar, so there is every reason to expect that the sophomore son of Army Mule can continue his improving pattern and register his third straight win in this starter optional claiming sprint. The San Luis Rey Downs-based 3-year-old employs an effective pace-pressing style and projects to be within range through and have every chance. Mister Beams must leave cleanly from the rail but if he does for new trainer Tim Yakteen he should be part of the pace and be a strong factor throughout. He gets Lasix and removes blinkers after finishing third as the favorite behind our top pick last month at Del Mar. Crowning Gold is another first-time Lasix user with room to improve. He’s a tad shy in the numbers department but projects to get at least a piece of it.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 10: Post: 4:29 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Conclude
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: The known element looks ordinary, so let’s take a stand and single the promising newcomer Conclude in this wide open straight maiden turf sprint for 3-year-olds. As a son of Collected (City Zip), the Phil D’Amato-trained colt has every right to enjoy grass, and his main track workouts indicate he has at least a decent amount of speed and perhaps even more than that. With Flavian Prat taking the call (25% with this jockey/trainer combo), this good looking chestnut offers enticing value at or near his morning line of 5-1.

Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis January 21, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Woodbine Mohawk Park has a 12-race card scheduled for this evening. The feature goes in Race 9, a Preferred Pace with a $34,000 purse. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 also starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9

3-Saulsbrook Victor (2-1)-Winner of 3 straight at this class, and 4 in a row in total shouldn't be overlooked tonight. Won't get on the point and dawdle to a .58 first half again but has shown the ability to win in different ways.
6-Wheels On Fire (5/2)-Proven winner at this class needed last after being off more than a month. This 8-year-old has won 28 of 87 at Mohawk and regular pilot Doug McNair should have in striking range turning for the wire.

Race 10

1-I Ama Rocket (3-1)-Comes off a win, and in 3 starts since joining the Jodie Cullen barn hasn't missed the board. Travis Cullen will need to work a sharp steer and follow live cover. Set a new mark in last and may have more to give.
7-Beachin Lindy (5/2)-This 8-year-old has been red hot winning 4 straight, the last 3 coming in this series. Has been a dominant winner versus this kind and can cash the biggest check with the same type of effort.

Race 11

1-William Hanover (4-1)-Started slowly and the .59 first half sealed his fate despite going the back half in 55.3. McClure takes the lines, and he can work an efficient trip for an improved effort.
8-Jordan Deo (7/2)-This will be the 3rd straight start with McNair in the bike and will look for an aggressive steer in a race without a standout. Has the gate speed to get a close-up seat to stay close and then roll by down the lane.

Race 12

1-Commanding Officer (3-1)-Drops to a soft spot, gets a positive driver change and draws inside. Has hit the board in 21 of 38 at Wbsb with 9 pictures. Should be a player but has been off since 12-30 and hasn't been in sharp form in the previous 5 starts.
5-Roll With The Flow (5-1)-Has 2 wins and a 2nd place finish in the last 3 races which were at London against Preferred company. Has taken top honors once in 6 Mohawk starts and McNair will do the steering. The McIntosh barn has posted 23% winners in the last 30 days and should offer a square price.
10-Twin B Powerball (4-1)-This is one of 2 entries from the Moreau barn (4/10) and this 5-year-old takes a significant drop in class. Loses Filion to #1, Jones will be in the bike and that should help the price. Has the gate speed to get a decent seat and could be overlooked at the windows.

Laurel Park Pick 4 Analysis Saturday, Jan. 21 January 21, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
Laurel Park’s nine-race card this Saturday features six consecutive stakes races of at least $75,000. Four of the stakes comprise a 50-cent Pick 4 wager that shapes up this way:

LRL 4th race (1:54 EST) -- Little separates OURNATIONONPARADE and AIN’T DA BEER COLD after their recent matchup in the Robert Manfuso Stakes at 1-1/16 miles. OURNATIONONPARADE had no breathers, maintaining rail position and dueling throughout before he tired late. He’s versatile enough to change tactics with more pace presence in this one-turn, one-mile test. AIN’T DA BEER COLD pressed the moderate pace 3-wide, forged a short lead when asked for run mid-turn and ran second to the trip-sitting winner. But also use price plays ONE TEN and GALERIO in the leadoff leg. ONE TEN hung late at 7F when second to Alwaysinahurry (6-20, $347k) two back, but he has the right running style in this field and his price will go up after a troubled allowance run as the beaten favorite. GALERIO, first or second in 26 of 36 starts, took money in his seasonal debut off a nine-month layoff but flattened out after an early move.

LRL 5th race (2:25 EST) -- INTREPID DREAM was scratched from the Carousel Stakes won by her stablemate, MALIBU BEAUTY, setting up an intriguing matchup between the Gary Capuano-trained mares in the $75,000 Geisha Stakes. INTREPID DREAM has raced only five times in her career, but the 5-year-old is one troubled trip from perfection, winning her last three route races by a combined 14-1/4 lengths. MALIBU BEAUTY boasts three wire-to-wire stakes victories in her last seven starts, most recently in the 1-1/8-mile Carousel when she set faster middle fractions than a same-day, 1-1/16-mile stakes for the boys and won by 7-3/4 lengths.

LRL 6th race (2:56 EST) -- BEREN delivers time and time again, at any track and at any sprint distance in stakes company. He rushed up after breaking a step slow last out, backed off a fast pace set by FACTOR IT IN and determinedly chased the winner as the top pair separated from the field. FIVE DREAMS earned his top speed figure but got caught by stakes repeater Repo Rocks last out. But his last four races produced five next-out winners (average 89 Beyer) and he has shown a stalking gear that could come in handy today.

LRL 7th race (3:27 EST) – DISCO EBO stumbled, out-dueled the favorite and was ‘displaced from the front’ in upper stretch before Betsy Blue (9-20, $604k) passed by to win the Garland of Roses Stakes at Aqueduct. FILLE D’ESPRIT was well-beaten as the favorite against several of the same rivals in her stakes three-peat attempt, but she should sit an ideal trip at an inflated price for a sharp outfit. SWAYIN TO AND FRO dueled and won at 6F, 6-1/2F and 7F in her last four stakes sprints.

Suggested 50-cent Ticket

LRL 4th Race: 1, 4, 5, 8
LRL 5th Race: 1, 6
LRL 6th Race: 2, 5, 9

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Fair Grounds - Race #12

Picks
Notes

#1 Norah G
Glad they're giving her a chance with this kind, even if it's a pretty deep spot for a Louisiana-bred runner to make a two-turn debut. That said, she's got quite a bit of talent and might work out a good trip from the inside if she can break well -- an issue for her in the past.

#5 Chop Chop
Her best stuff so far makes her the one to beat, and I think she's going to like it here with a long stretch to work with. Grade I dropper makes obvious sense.

#7 Forest Chimes
No clue what to do with her after she rolled like a good thing in her debut for a team that doesn't typically have them ready to fire like that. Wouldn't be any kind of surprise with her natural talent.

Race Summary
Norah G should offer a decent price off a slow stakes win against Louisiana breds, but I think she might be good enough to hang with open company in a spot like this. Worth a shot. Also can't wait to see what Forest Chimes is made of here.

Fair Grounds - Race #13

Picks
Notes

#9 Mr. Wireless
He draws wide again here, but he made a sharp move around the turn in that last one before getting run down late, and I think he might make amends here at a semi-attractive price.

#8 Zozos
His only dull race came in the Kentucky Derby, and his comeback run was pretty solid. Think he's the one to beat in here with a bit of upside today.

#5 Happy American
Late runner rallied to score last out over the top choice, but I am a little concerned about the fact that that was a big career best for him and maybe he won't run back to it. Other possibility is that he's just getting really good right now.

Race Summary
Mr. Wireless gets the edge in a fun race where #2 Run Classic has some appeal, too, and fans of #3 Intrepid Heart will hope he can bounce back off the rare clunker last out. Fun one to watch.

Fair Grounds - Race #14

Picks
Notes

#7 Instant Coffee
He's the likely chalk in here, but he looks tough with a trio of tough tries under his belt. Think the pace might be fair enough to help him get home from off the splits.

#8 Two Phil's
No clue what to make of Rivelli shipping one down here like this, but I think he'll get a good trip spying the speed from this high draw, and he fits as well as most in here.

#5 Tapit's Conquest
He moved up in that first try around two turns, and it wouldn't be any kind of surprise to see him take another step forward in this third career start.

Race Summary
Instant Coffee should get a decent enough race shape to rally in this one, and his only loss came behind the Breeders' Cup Juvenile champ. Tempted to single and hope he's just the best among these right now.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Golden Gate - Race #5

Picks
Notes

#7 SHANGHAI MIST (3-1)
Made last-to-first move and remains eligible for the same race.

#1 TROPICANA GIRL (9-5)
Led at stretch call in 6 of last 8 starts, re-tries distance off Wong re-claim.

#2 CAN’THELPFALLIN (6-1)
Beaten fave against better, good fit at this level last spring.

Race Summary
SHANGHAI MIST changed tactics, rallied 5-wide into a slow pace and won going away at this distance. She fits the race conditions well and is taken to repeat. Bet to win and place.

Golden Gate - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#8 TELOS (9-2)
Met good ones at Del Mar, all-or-nothing as first-time gelding.

#1 BLUEGRASS RYDER (6-1)
Tries to carry-over decent turf form to the all-weather track.

#6 DE LA LUNA (8-5)
Ran to heavy backing when dropped in for a tag, couldn’t reach pace controller.

Race Summary
TELOS runs first time as a gelding after he wilted under demanding MSW fractions two starts back at Del Mar, then was outrun against a pair of promising Bob Baffert-trained runners. Reincarnate won the G-III Sham Stakes and Mr. Fisk won in MSW company in his next start. Play an 8-ALL exacta.

Golden Gate - Race #9

Picks
Notes

#3 STANDFORGRIT (8-1)
Improved try with Lasix, worth a price stab in pace-less race.

#2 GET MY POINT (5-2)
Rallied for minor awards in last pair, will be underlay.

#10 WHEREDIDITGO (10-1)
Debuts for O’Neill off long series of works; dam was unraced.

Race Summary
STANDFORGRIT chased the runner-up through solid fractions, came under a hard drive on the turn but remained a presence until mid-stretch. She can use her speed well in this spot after an improved try with Lasix. Bet to win and place.

#8 MIDNIGHT SPECIAL (ML=8/1)
#3 SMILEFORME (ML=7/2)
#7 TIZLIGHTNING (ML=4/1)
#6 EL DIABLO ROJO (ML=5/1)

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - Taking a trip to a lower level; has the form to make his presence felt. 70-85-87 are last three speed ratings. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this race. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where he finished in his last race (eighth). Should improve in today's race, with some respectable odds. SMILEFORME - The 94 most recent race speed rating looks mighty good on paper. TIZLIGHTNING - Ranks highest in earnings per start. A strong effort right here in this race will boost the lifetime total. EL DIABLO ROJO - Curatolo and Pineda perform well when they work together. It's hard to beat a +132 return on investment for a rider and conditioner.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 KING OF SPEED (ML=4/1), #10 BOX OF CHOCOLATES (ML=5/1),

KING OF SPEED - He's likely going to get baked on the top end. This gelding hasn't had any positive outcomes in short distance races in the last two months. BOX OF CHOCOLATES - Not likely for this one to make an impact with no success lately in a short distance affair.

# 3 WAR CROSS 4/1

# 2 MAPACHE G 9/5

# 1 SHIMMERING LIGHT 2/1

I've got to go with WAR CROSS. Had one of the strongest Equibase Speed Figures of this field in his last outing. The average Equibase class figure alone makes this horse a solid choice. Formidable pick to take this race going in a dirt route. MAPACHE G - He should be considered given the competitive speed numbers. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. SHIMMERING LIGHT - Had one of the most favorable Speed Figures of this group in his last contest. He has been running admirably and the speed figures are among the best in this field.

#11 HE GOTS TO GO (ML=9/2)
#6 SPEED WARNING (ML=5/2)
#5 NET WORTH (ML=7/2)

HE GOTS TO GO - Nice return on investment for this jock and trainer duo. Jock hops right back aboard after getting to know the horse by riding in the last race. That's always a positive sign. This colt surprised everybody by running second Dec 22nd. Gets help from Waltz with the addition of Lasix. This colt is in fine form. Ran second on Dec 22nd. This animal picks up a lot of cash per race around the track. Number one in this race. SPEED WARNING - Rodriguez and Stidham teamed up together are a railbird's friend. This colt gets a weight break of -5 lbs from last race. Certainly could make the difference right here in this race. Stidham will try adding the 'shades' today in hopes of an improved performance. NET WORTH - This trainer (Cox) has a terrific win pct with first time starters. A great handicapping angle is 1st time Lasix. Cox gives it to this one for this contest.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 BLANTON (ML=8/1), #3 GOD OF WINE (ML=8/1),

BLANTON - Usually I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance contests in order to bet on him. GOD OF WINE - Not normally the kind of horse one plays off of any type of very long layoff. The form factor is somewhat in question after the addition of bandages in the October 3rd affair. Betting a turf horse first time on the dirt is a tough play.
