Root Reserve on San Francisco This one is going to be well worth the price of admission. San Francisco’s last loss came more than three months ago when they lost to Kansas City 44-23 back on October 23. They haven’t missed a step despite playing their third quarterback of the season, including Purdy, who was Mr. Irrelevant in the draft. Philadelphia earned home-field advantage but moving the ball against a stout 49ers defense that led the league in scoring defense, second in rushing yards allowed per game and second in yards per carry allowed (3.4) is going to be a challenge. As long as Purdy withstands the rush of the Eagles, who led the league with 70 sacks, and doesn’t commit a rash of turnovers, the 49ers will be in this one the whole way. San Francisco has seen the under post a 7-0 mark in their last seven road playoff games with their vaulted defense. San Francisco stands 1st in scoring defense as they give up an average of 16.3 points per game. Brock Purdy, who took over the job in December, was 114 of 170 passing for 1,374 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. He is 37 of 59 in the postseason for 546 yards with three touchdowns against no interceptions while adding 24 yards plus a score on the ground. Robbie Gould has hit 50 of 51 extra point attempts and 27 of 32 field goals with a long of 51. Take the points and San Francisco as they find a way to steal the game and earn their spot in the Super Bowl.

Home-field advantage is massive in conference championship games, so Philadelphia has the edge right off the bat. Both teams have been excellent this year, but the Eagles have fewer flaws. Philly runs the ball well with Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and Kenneth Gainwell. You also have to account for the ability of quarterback Jalen Hurts to run the ball. The 49ers could have looked better against running QBs this year. Hurts has been incredible this season at QB, and the Eagles look like a well-oiled machine. The 49ers have a few injured running backs today, and Brock Purdy has only played in 6 NFL Games at QB. How often do you see a rookie who played a fraction of the games get to a super bowl? Look for the Eagles to dominate at home with the defense locking Purdy down and Hurts doing whatever it takes to put up points. Take the Eagles.

It will be cold tonight in Kansas City, but it will be dry. Joe Burrow has unlimited targets. Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd can all get open against a youthful Chiefs secondary. Cincinnati will generate a few scoring drives tonight. Patrick Mahomes had an injury scare last week, but he practiced and should be able to throw from the pocket at the very least. TE Travis Kelce will play, and the training staff will give him what is needed to keep his back from bothering him. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is a magician in finding ways to score. Eli Apple is an outstanding cornerback for the Bengals, but KC can beat you on one half of the field. JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marques Valdes-Scandling can get themselves wide open for Mahomes to find. The biggest X-Factor is the Chiefs’ front seven against the Bengals’ offensive line. The Bengals have three new starters in the last few weeks and are vulnerable. Cincinnati did a great job last week against Buffalo, but the Chiefs have the second-most sacks in the NFL. Tonight’s game should be a back-and-forth thriller, but in the end, the Chiefs will take advantage of the injuries up front. Take the Chiefs and the Over.

Coach Izzo gets teams focused and ready for March Madness and playing top ranked teams. It keeps him in the spotlight. Purdue is number 1 in the nation, but they have not been blowing teams out, except for Minnesota. Purdue only beat Michigan by 5, Maryland by 3, Ohio State by 2, and only beat this Spartan team by 1 last game. Tom Izzo is one of the best coaches in college basketball, and will have the gameplan ready to face this Boilermaker team. Michigan State is a strong team, they are 9-3 in their last 12 games, and will be coming in with confidence after how close they played Purdue last outing. The Spartan guards, Walker and Hoggard, are quicker than their Purdue counterparts and should be able to find advantages on offense with their athleticism. We are ‘database compelled’ to come out firing on the OVER in this year’s NFC Championship game on Sunday. At 3:00pm ET, it’ll be the EAGLES hosting the NINERS, with the OU line in the range of 46.0 to 46.5 points. Obviously, all sharp bettors know that that we are dealing with the TOP TWO defenses in the NFL for the 2022 season. And we’re not thrilled to fade (or go against) great defensive teams like San Francisco or Philadelphia. But one thing that we WILL say about the year-to-date statistics: For both of these teams, those stats are extremely and HEAVILY skewed based on the quality of each team’s opponent this season. NEITHER of these two teams faced very many good offenses this season. For an example, Philadelphia had only TWO (out of 18!) games this year in which they faced a Top 10 offense (Minnesota and Detroit way back in Weeks 1 and 2). On the flip side, San Francisco faced only THREE Top 10 offenses this season as well (vs La Chargers, Miami, and Kansas City). So it’s no wonder that these two teams come in with the #1 and #2 defenses. Let’s also not forget that these OFFENSES are ranked #3 and #5 on the year as well. I mentioned in our opening sentence that we are ‘database obligated’ to increase our rating to BEST BET status in this game. We have anywhere from 11-12 different database situations that are all pointing to a higher-scoring outcome than the oddsmakers anticipate. So let’s run through ‘em all, starting with the Philly ‘applicable’ situations…

17-1 O/U since 2003 / 12-0 O/U since 2006 (59.0 combined ppg): All NFL Playoff teams off a Playoff WIN in which they allowed 7 or less points (EAGLES beat the Giants 38-7 last week)…

As we talked about in this week’s Marc Lawrence ‘Against the Spread’ podcast: The NFC CHAMPIONSHIP game has gone 12-4-1 O/U in the last 17 years… and 7-2-1 O/U in the last ten (52.9 combined PPG). In NON-DIVISION play, the results improve to 7-1 O/U in the last eight… with a higher average of 54.9 combined PPG.
