# 5 CELTIC COUSEN 7/5

# 2 CLASSIC LEGEND 9/2

# 1 RAPPER ZAPPER 2/1

I think about CELTIC COUSEN here. Formidable average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this animal a solid contender. Rodriguez has a winning percentage of 20 over the last month. Ought to be given a chance based on the very good Equibase Speed Figure posted in the last affair. CLASSIC LEGEND - Has to be considered based on the very good Equibase speed fig earned in the last contest. Must be given consideration given the class of races run lately. RAPPER ZAPPER - Could best this group here, showing decent figures of late. Has to be given a chance in this event if only for the competitive speed figure earned in the last race.

#1 KNOCKOUT BERT (ML=2/1)

KNOCKOUT BERT - This gelding is utmost in earnings per start. Take a long look at this horse in the saddling ring. Should do well right here. Weight shift of -5 from Dec 9th race at Golden Gate Fields.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ZERO BUCKS GIVEN (ML=5/2), #4 BROKEN FINGER (ML=4/1), #6 THAT'S BIND BABE (ML=6/1),

ZERO BUCKS GIVEN - Difficult to play any less than sharp equine in a sprint race if he hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last couple months. Awfully hard to play this horse when he hasn't been showing any fighting spirit recently. BROKEN FINGER - Difficult to bet on any thoroughbred to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the chance. THAT'S BIND BABE - The speed ratings continue to fall, 84/69/59. Not a healthy omen.

# 2 KPULINA 5/1

# 7 AZONDRA 3/1

# 8 NAHIARA ZOE 10/1

KPULINA is the strongest bet in this race. Should go to the lead and could never look back. Has a sharp shot in this race if you like back class. This bunch is much less demanding than the last one she faced. AZONDRA - Has solid early lick and will most likely fare soundly against this group of animals. NAHIARA ZOE - Must be carefully examined given the class of races run recently. Wagerers using horses with this rider and trainer duo have done well recently.

#5 FLIGHT TO LONDON (ML=8/1)
#3 MISSINGYOUCRAZY (ML=9/2)
#6 HIGINIA (ML=6/1)

FLIGHT TO LONDON - Don't often see a favorable ROI like +62. This jock/conditioner duo has done well together over the last twelve months. I like this first time starter mainly because her workouts for this have been here at Sam Houston. The addition of Lasix might make this animal wake up and run a great in this event. MISSINGYOUCRAZY - The 'x-factor' at work here is that this filly has been working over this track getting ready for her first start. I know the barn is serious today. The filly gets Lasix for the 1st time. HIGINIA - I look for a significant improvement right here with the addition of Lasix for the 2nd time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 CANDY BEE (ML=3/1), #7 TWISTED BRADE (ML=4/1),

CANDY BEE - 3/1 is not pegged at the proper price for any thoroughbred in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint contest recently. TWISTED BRADE - Showed very little in the last event. Really don't expect any improvement today.

RACE 5: PATTY H (#6)

Rossa Veloce (#3) will obviously beat this field if she runs back to the 102 Beyer and 111 TimeformUS Speed Figure that she earned in her narrow victory over Beguine two back. Yet that effort is such an outlier in her past performances, so it’s a little tough to trust her to reproduce it. She came back down to Earth last time when lost as the 6-5 favorite after setting a moderate pace in the fog. If she runs that race, or her October debut for the Rob Atras barn, she’s still a contender here but isn’t some kind of standout. I’m inclined to let her beat me at a short price. I prefer her main rival Leeloo (#5) among the short prices. This filly is stepping up to the open N2X level for the first time, but she isn’t catching the toughest field. She’s been in great form recently for David Duggan, winning 3 of her last 4 starts while ascending the class ladder. She figures to be right there with her usual solid effort. Yet I’m going for a bigger price on top. Patty H (#6) could get somewhat overlooked here off a pair of disappointing losses at the level. Yet she had legitimate excuses each time. She was severely bumped at the start two back, forcing her out of position early, and then last time she broke slowly in the fog. I don’t want to be too hard on her for either of those performance, as I know she’s capable of better. She showed that three back when she nearly held off Mosienko in a similar spot. At her best she has the tactical speed to be forward here, and I think drawing outside will help her cause.

RACE 6: SPETTRO (#1)

I’m just not thrilled with the likely favorites in this $25k conditioned claimer. I suppose Mo Rewards (#8) will be formidable if able to bounce back to his effort on Nov. 13. He did run pretty well that day after getting off to a stumbling start. However, he had absolutely nothing to offer in that 9-furlong starter race last time, coming under a ride on the backstretch before getting eased. I’m a little concerned that this turf-inclined runner just isn’t thriving during the winter. Furthermore, the Rudy Rodriguez barn has been struggling to win races lately. I’m more confident in the other likely short price, Salute to America (#2). He fits pretty well here off his performance at the level two back when beaten by next-out winner Swift Tap. He didn’t run as well last time, but he was facing a tougher field that day and was always out of position in the slop. Stretching back out to a mile should suit him. Yet I wanted to find some alternative to this pair. The horse that intrigues me most from a value standpoint is Spettro (#1). He figures to get overlooked based on his recent dirt results, but those performances aren’t nearly as bad as they might seem. He was facing a much tougher field when he sprinted in that October 6 allowance race, and had little chance to be effective after he failed to make the lead. He was again facing a better field last time at the $40k level when asked to go 9 furlongs. He actually held on pretty well to still be in contention at the quarter pole before fading late. I like him turning back to a mile and he figures to get aggressively sent to the front by the apprentice Jason Huayas. I think he’s more capable on this surface than his results indicate and I should get a square price.

RACE 7: HANDSOME CAT (#1)

Life Changer (#9) is obviously the horse to beat after hitting the board in his last three attempts at this level. He was arguably best last time when splitting horses in the lane to just miss getting past winner Reggae Music Man late. However, the form of that race wasn’t flattered when the winner came back to run poorly in his subsequent start. I also have some doubts about the quality of a few other races he exits, and I tend to think this spot is a bit deeper. He’s surely a contender, but I didn’t feel the need to default to him at a short price. Bezos (#8) arguably put forth the best last race of anyone in this field when he finished fourth in the Gravesend. He’s been steadily improving since the claim for just $16k by Chandradat Goberdhan and will be tough for this field to handle if he repeats that 114 TimeformUS Speed Figure. I don’t fully trust him, but he figures to be a fair price once again. David Jacobson has entered two in here, of which Cees Get Degrees (#2) could attract more support. Yet he made find it difficult to win this race with a speedy rival like Bezos in the field. I actually see plenty of speed signed on here, so I’m much more inclined to consider Jacobson’s other runner. Handsome Cat (#1) will benefit from any pace that develops up front. He’s not a plodder by any means, but he does have the ability to close into a quick pace, and many others in this field aren’t as comfortable using that style. I thought he might have been able to win at this level two back if Javier Castellano had been able to get him off the rail in the stretch. Then last time he never gave up when just missing the place, battling on between horses behind a dominant winner. Both of those races came over wet tracks and he may be more comfortable on fast going. David Jacobson’s horses have been running well lately, and this one should be a fair price with the apprentice named to ride.

Sydney Preview Jan. 27, 2023: Spot plays for Rosehill
Alastair Bull

Sydney’s autumn carnival gets underway properly this weekend at Rosehill Gardens. The path to the world’s richest two-year-old race, the Golden Slipper (G1), begins with two Group 3 races, and the sprinter-milers begin their campaigns in the Expressway (G2).

Below are some spot plays for the features.
Race 2, 8:55 p.m. ET: Canonbury Stakes (G3), 1,100 meters (about 5 1/2 furlongs), 2-year-old colts and geldings

With the withdrawal of #5 Mafia, just six are due to head to the post for this Golden Slipper lead-up, and the form is largely unexposed. One that has shown up, however, is #1 King’s Gambit. Beginning his career in the Listed Debutant Stakes at Caulfield in October, King’s Gambit exploded away from his rivals to win by five lengths almost untouched.

He hasn’t raced since, but on that form alone it’s hard to back against him. The only one I’d consider is #6 Shinzo; the Snitzel colt is bred to be good, he’s won two trials, and he gets 3kg from King’s Gambit. #2 Red Resistance looks the best of the others.

$20 win: #1 King’s Gambit
$2 trifecta: 1, 6 with 1, 6 with all

Race 5, 10:40 p.m. ET: Widden Stakes (G3), 1,100 meters, 2-year-old fillies

The Widden has more depth than the Canonbury, with 12 runners due to start. The buzz horse in this race is the unraced #6 Learning to Fly, who could become the first Southern Hemisphere winner by Triple Crown winner Justify if she can get up in this.

Learning to Fly has won her last two trials well, beating race rival #9 Perfect Proposal home Jan. 16. Perfect Proposal finished second in her only start, the Gimcrack (G3) Oct. 1, behind subsequent Magic Millions Classic runner-up Platinum Jubilee, so it’s good form. Debut winner #1 Cigar Flick and Jan. 14 runner-up #11 Steel City look the best of the others.

$10 win/$30 show: #6 Learning to Fly
$1 trifecta: 6, 9 with 6, 9 with 1, 11

Race 8, 12:40 a.m. Saturday ET: Expressway Stakes (G2), 1,200 meters (about 6 furlongs), 3-year-olds and up

The clear standouts are #4 Forbidden Love, who used a second-place finish here as a springboard to a dual Group 1-winning autumn campaign, and #9 Golden Mile, winner in spring of the Caulfield Guineas (G1) and the Callander-Presnell (G2). Forbidden Love disappointed a little in spring, but won a trial Jan. 16 and may be set to improve. However, I feel Golden Mile is more reliable.

If there’s a potential upsetter, it’s #5 Mariamia, a graded stakes-placed mare who won her return to racing well Jan. 14. #1 Nicolini Vito and #3 Pizarro look the best of the rest.

$20 win: #9 Golden Mile
$2 trifecta: 4, 9 with 4, 5, 9 with 1, 3, 4, 5, 9

Gulfstream Park January 27, 2023

Race 7: Maiden Special Weight

#2 Sure Can was second last time out over this surface in her debut race over the turf. She should improve in her second start over this track. #1 Accomplished Girl was fifth last time out in the same race as our top choice, which was her career debut. She is another one that should improve today.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming
freestar

#3 Peachy Weachy won by a neck last time out, while being claimed by Mike Maker. He now puts her in a protected race, while Irad Ortiz, Jr. gets aboard, which shows that Maker likes the horse. #8 American of Course was an eight length winner last time out over this track against starter allowance company.

Race 9: Claiming

#7 Moslers Image was a neck away from winning in a similar race last time out over this track. She also runs first off of the claim for a solid trainer today, while Irad Ortiz, Jr. rides through the claim. #2 Linny Kate was a close second last time out over this track and at this level.

Race 10: Maiden Claiming

#2 Midnight Getaway drops down in class a bit after running third at a higher level last time out over this track. #8 Frostedbird makes his debut today for a trainer who is solid with first time staters, while it is a good sign that Irad Ortiz, Jr. picks up the mount.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (January 27)

After a week off for the Lunar New Year holiday, racing returns to Korea this weekend. Things get underway on Friday at Busan with a 10-race card from 11:00 to 18:00. It’s quite a star studded line-up for a Friday as Speed Young, who won the Breeders’ Cup Champion Juvenile race in December, goes in race 9 while filly Triple Crown winner Golden Power seeks to return to form in a very challenging race 10. Here are the previews:

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies get things underway with five of the twelve racing for the first time. We’ll side with experience though and (11) AMAZING MOVE who, after a positive trial, ran a solid enough 5th on debut on December 18th, settling back and running on. That suggests the wide draw shouldn’t be too problematic here and having derived benefit from that run, she can win here. (6) ACE HORANGI was well backed on debut in the same December 18th after a quick trial and while she could only manage 7th, she can improve here. (3) GIJEOGUI GEUMBIT is another who ran 5th on debut at this distance on Christmas Day, overcoming a wide draw. The time was significantly slower than Amazing Move’s and Ace Horangi’s but she too can make progress today. As for the first timers, (2) MAGIC SWEETIE and (5) UNJU AKANSHA look the most likely to make an immediate impact.
Selections (11) Amazing Move (6) Ace Horangi (3) Gijeogui Geumbit (2) Magic Sweetie
Next Best 5, 8
Fast Start 2, 3, 5, 9

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens. (12) GEUMA DEFT beat three of these on debut on December 16th over 1000M when crossing the line 1st and stopping the clock in a fast time only to be demoted by the stewards for interference. He has the challenge of the widest gate here, but the manner of that run suggests that with a touch of luck at the start and a touch more discipline at the finish, he can finish ahead of those same rivals today. (2) DUBAI WONJEONGDAE ran 4th in that race. He was a full ten-lengths behind Geuma Deft but the step up in trip can suit and he can get closer today. There are three first time starters and among them (6) HAVE A GOOD YEAR was the best in trials. He went through two heats, significantly improving in the second of them when leading for much of the way around. He can be on pace here and put in a bold showing. (5) ROAD TO GLORY and (9) RUN TO KING other placing hopes.
Selections (12) Geuma Deft (2) Dubai Wonjeongdae (6) Have A Good Year (5) Road To Glory

Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1400M) KRW 25 Million

Report this ad

A regular maiden here and it seems wide open. Four of them raced each other over 1300M on December 23rd and that looks to be a good reference. (11) PURPLE LINE debuted in that race, settling towards the rear of midfield and running on for 3rd. He should have come on for that experience, the extra distance can suit, and he has as good a chance as any here. It will require him to make up almost two lengths on (6) COOL RUNNING. He led that December 23rd race until the closing stages, ultimately coming home in 2nd place. He has shown improvement across his three starts so far, he can be on pace again, and he shouldn’t be ruled out. Also making progress over three previous appearances has been (12) VEREUDA. She finished off well for 4th in that December 23rd race from a similarly wide draw to today, and she can continue to improve here. Of those who didn’t go in the December 23rd race, (7) DOCTOR SHARK and (2) PEGACORN look the best.
Selections (11) Purple Line (6) Cool Running (12) Vereuda (7) Doctor Shark
Next Best 2, 9
Fast Start 2, 4, 6, 10

Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies (and two mares) only and it’s a good race for the level. (3) SPECIAL ROAD justified favourite status to make all at start number two on December 18th over 1200M, winning comfortable. She comes up in class and distance here but draws very nicely and has every chance of scoring again. So too (4) GRAPHENE RAP WORLD. Having won over five furlongs in a super quick time back in November, she than ran a solid 3ns on her first try at this class over 1200M on December 16th. She does come up in the weights here but draws well and the additional half furlong can suit. (2) BLUE ICON is yet to win but enters off three consecutive runner-up finishes, most recently at class and distance on December 23rd when on pace throughout. She draws very nicely here and it’s not impossible she could go one better at last. (5) THUNDER FURY has placed at this class and along with up in class (7) DALEHOLRINGWANGDAE is another in the hunt.
Selections (3) Special Road (4) Graphene Rap World (2) Blue Icon (5) Thunder Fury
Next Best 7, 6
Fast Start 2, 3, 4, 6

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(3) ROAD TO QUEEN got her maiden win at start number two on December 9th when settling midfield and running on well over 1000M. The step up in trip can suit, she continues under a light weight and from a good draw she can win again. (2) RUNNING POWER ran 2nd on debut and then got his maiden win on December 16th when again crossing the line 2nd but being awarded the race after the “winner” impeded him. He overcame gate twelve that day to get to a handy position and from a much better draw he is another who can deny the class raise and go close. (5) NICHOLAS G. is yet to win but comes up in class with two runner-up finishes and a 3rd in three starts. He has run a solid time at this distance and a repeat performance should see him firmly in the mix. (9) WORLD CLASS CAT and (1) MOTHER MOUNTAIN mong others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (3) Road To Queen (2) Running Power (5) Nicholas G. (9) World Class Cat
Next Best 1, 11
Fast Start 1, 2, 5, 8

Busan Race 6: Class 5 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

The distance here is unknown territory for all but four of these but there are a few candidates to step up. (9) HAPPY JAZZ got her solitary win to date over 1200M. but she handled herself well over a mile last time out, showing on pace and running 4th at this class. The draw isn’t the best, but the tempo of two-turn racing may suit, and she can go close here. (10) DOCTOR PERO also did well when stepped up to a mile last time out on December 9th, settling midfield and running on to win well. He comes up in class today but can be competitive again at the extended trip. (3) FUSAICHI has got a bit far back in both his two attempts over a mile, both at this class but has finished off well and is another who may find two turns to his liking. (1) ADELE STELLA and (4) DIA FORCE, the latter with experience of this distance, among others in at least the placing frame.
Selections (9) Happy Jazz (10) Doctor Pero (3) Fusaichi (1) Adele Stella
Next Best 4, 2
Fast Start 5, 7, 9, 10

Busan Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

Fillies only here. (11) GANGSEO GIANT was an also-ran in the Gyeongnam DoMin Ilbo Trophy before beating a substantial number of today’s rivals at this over 1000M in a very similar race on Christmas Day. She does come up in the weights and the draw is not the best as she looks a front-running type, but she is the one to beat again. (9) CARPE BABEL debuted in that DoMin Ilbo Trophy before running 2nd to Gangseo Giant on Christmas Day having led for much of the way around. She meets that day’s winner better at the weights and can be considered. (6) ALPHA SONGDANG comes in having won at class and distance just two weeks ago when leading for much of the way. She comes up in the weights significantly but can be competitive again. (8) ALPHA THOR and (10) ILBEONJI, the latter second up after returning from a lengthy spell, are among others in the hunt.
Selections (11) Gangseo Giant (9) Carpe Babel (6) Alpha Songdang (8) Alpha Thor
Next Best 10, 3
Fast Start 1, 4, 6, 9

Busan Race 8: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(2) SEUNGNIMAGIC KING is a perfect two for two so far having won narrowly on debut over 1000M at class 6 level before a dominant score over 1200M at class 5 level on December 16th. He come sup in trip too but it shouldn’t be an issue and he has every chance of continuing on his merry way here. (1) CHEONGHO BOSS beat three of these on his way to victory at class and distance on December 2nd racing on pace throughout. He comes up slightly in the weights but draws nicely again and should be in the mix once more. (3) I LOVE HANSEN made all to win over this distance at class 5 level on December 4th. He is nicely in weight wise and is drawn well to be competitive. (8) TWO OF US comes in having won her latest two, most recently a filly only affair at this class and distance on December 23rd. The engagement of an apprentice sees her under a light weight and in the mix here. (10) ATLAS was 3rd in both the Areumdaun Jilju Stakes and the Gyeongnam DoMin Ilbo Trophy for juveniles before running 3rd behind Two Of Us last time out. She too has claims and will be backed by plenty.
Selections (2) Seungnimagic King (1) Cheongho Boss (3) I Love Hansen (8) Two Of Us
Next Best 10, 4
Fast Start 1, 2, 6, 10

Busan Race 9: Class 3 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(9) SPEED YOUNG is a winner of two from three so far including the G2 Breeders’ Cup champion juvenile race on December 4th over 1400M when he settled back from a very wide draw before running on very strongly to win comfortably. He should only get better over the extended trip and can win again. (12) FANTASTIC KINGDOM suffered his second defeat in the Breeders’ Cup race when he was handy and struck the front at one stage in the home straight. He is the only horse to have beaten Speed Young so far, on the latter’s debut in October over 1200M. He is done no favours by the draw here as he has been on pace in all his starts so far, but a return to winning ways isn’t impossible. (7) MONGTTANG was a really good winner of a valuable race over this distance on December 18th. He comes down a full 5kg in the weights and can be competitive again. (10) MAHAMERU was 2nd in that December 18th race and should be in the mix while (11) SPICE ECTON is another to keep safe.
Selections (9) Speed Young (12) Fantastic Kingdom (7) Mongttang (10) Mahameru
Next Best 11, 1
Fast Start 1, 4, 5, 12

Busan Race 10: Class 2 (2000M) Allowance / KRW 90 Million

Tricky puzzle to conclude the day. (3) ALIVE CAPTAIN was slow away and got a bit far back when well backed on his first try at this distance on December 16th. At the start prior he ran 2nd at this class over 1800M and from another nice draw, he is worth another chance today. (1) UNJU HERO finished midfield over 1800M in a valuable race on December 18th. His form going into that at class 3 level was good and he comes down significantly in weight here. It’s his first try over 2000M and it may well suit. (11) POKPUNG EONDEOK was another who was slightly disappointing in that class and distance race on December 16th. He has a strong finish on him and while he doesn’t have an apprentice claim aboard today, Park Jae-I takes the reins and that may be to his benefit. (12) GALAXY ROAD is rarely far away and was 4th in that December 16th race. He comes up in the weights but looks a solid money chance again. (7) MAN OF THE WORLD was the longest but one shot on the board when running out of class on December 16th but almost managed to lead all the way around ultimately finishing 2nd. He will warrant more respect here.
Selections (3) Alive Captain (1) Unju Hero (11) Pokpung Eondeok (12) Galaxy Road

FEATURES

Freehold, Race 5

#4 Candell (5-2) is from the productive barn of Edwin Quevedo, whose stock shuffles from Freehold to Meadowlands and cashes many checks. This one was third to a dueling pair and best of the rest at 19-1. A better start puts him on the toteboard.
#5 Salvadors Sun (15-1) threatens to play a strong role, having raced well here at 31-1.

Frank Carulli: Golden Gate Mandatory Pick 6 Analysis | Friday

By Frank Carulli

Amid a bevy of weekend stakes from around the country, don’t lose sight of Golden Gate’s Pick 6 on Friday, Jan. 27. The 20-cent wager that covers races 3 through 8 will feature a $54,818 carryover pool and a mandatory payout.

Here’s a closer look:

GG 3rd race (4:45 EST) -- HOT RAGEOUS, re-claimed twice in the last nine months by trainer Ed Moger Jr., is a good fit at this level and projects an ideal stalking trip at a distance which she’s 3-for-6. LAGATHA, first or second in 11 of 16 starts at Golden Gate, ran away to a 7-length victory under minimal urging, but the four rivals she defeated were well-beaten in their next start. LOTSA PEPPER led by 2 or more lengths at the stretch call in 4 of her last 5 starts, winning once. She appears better on the turf but a recent :47.1 work on the all-weather track is encouraging.

GG 4th race (5:15 EST) -- ZERO BUCKS GIVEN won three photo-finishes at this distance in his last seven starts, but he gave way chasing the fleet-footed favorite at 6F last out and finished fourth behind next-out winner Whoa Buddy. KNOCKOUT BERT threw his head in the air at the start, got caught very wide on the backstretch and lacked stretch kick from a contending position. A smooth break from the rail is key to his winning chances today.

GG 5th race (5:45 EST) -- LEMON DROP SHOT, a runner-up in 7 of 11 starts, can’t be ignored on the class drop, but he is too risky at 8-to-5, so punch the ‘ALL’ button in this leg.

GG 6th race (6:15 EST) -- AWE, unhurried chasing the loose 2-to-1 leader, loomed boldly at the top of the stretch and was blocked twice during the run to the wire. He probably wouldn’t have won, but he is a must use in his second start after four months away. DI LAURIAN set a pressured pace before winning favorite Pour On The Cole and Theyreminiscovru – who won a $6,250 claiming race on the front end December 4 – passed by. MY SUNSHINE towers over the field on paper, but he takes a class plunge off a 10-month layoff. He finished first or second in 14 of 20 starts at Golden Gate; the rest of the field has 12 wins and 8 seconds from 122 combined starts.

GG 7th race (6:45 EST) -- CLOCKSTRIKESTWELVE – today’s solo play on the Pick 6 ticket -- rallied strongly while 4- and 5-wide but couldn’t reach pace controller MADEIRA WINE in a longer route race. The race complexion changed dramatically when Trojan Clubhouse, a wire-to-wire winner in four consecutive races, unseated his jockey at the start. CLOCKSTRIKESTWELVE’S stablemate, stretch-out sprinter GHOSTLY GAL, all but ensures a faster pace today.

GG 8th race (7:15 EST) -- BRONZE WARRIOR finished ahead of three next-out winners at this level Dec. 11 and behind Sunny Spot, who won a $20,000 claiming race here last Sunday. He stepped up in class for his next start, made first run at the loose leader on the final turn, but was no match for classy 4-to-5 winner First Premio (8-36, $561k). GOVERNOR’S PARTY runs for the cheapest claiming price of his career off a two-month layoff and appears an all-or-nothing type as a result. The last time he ran 1-1/16 miles, he rallied to finish second to Lammas, a recent winner in the Grade III Berkley Handicap at Golden Gate. WALKING BOSS made a last-to-first move to win for the first time in 10 months in a bottom-level claimer but has enough back class and the right running style to repeat off the claim.

What Cranbourne Races
Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977
When Friday, January 27, 2023
First Race 6:15pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

Friday evening racing will return to Cranbourne Turf Club this week with a competitive eight-race program. The track is currently rated a Good 4 with warm weather forecast for Melbourne and surrounds, so we expect to be racing on a Good track come Friday. The rail will be in the in the +3m position from the 1000m mark to the winning post and in the true position for the remainder of the circuit. The first race will jump at 6:15pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Cranbourne: Squami

Our best bet at Cranbourne will be the Simon Zahra-trained Squami who has finished in the top four at all three of his starts this preparation, including a win at Terang over 1200m two starts back on December 20. After leading the field up at Cranbourne last start, this son of Squamosa was run over in the final 100m by Galactic Fury who came home from the back of the field and looked to have run out the 1300m slightly stronger. Simon Zahra and his team have chosen to drop this five-year-old gelding back to the 1200m on Friday and if he can find the lead once again, he will be fit enough to run out a strong 1200m. With Tramontana being the other leading contender in the race, we expect to see both of them take the lead and try and kick away on the home turn. Damien Thornton has ridden this gelding at all three of his starts this time in and there will be no difference on Friday.

Next Best at Cranbourne: Drake Passage

In the third leg of the quaddie we will be siding with the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Drake Passage who is coming off a nice win over 1629m at Werribee on January 7. This four-year-old gelding has recorded two wins and two placings from his nine career starts, with eight of his nine starts coming over 1600m plus. This son of Jakkalberry was very good first-up at Werribee where he ran away from his rivals to record an easy 2.75 length victory over Tactfull. During the run this gelding settled just worse than midfield and rounded the field up on the home turn to kick clear and win easily with a lot in the tank. Patrick Moloney will stick and from barrier one, he should have this guy in midfield position on the rail, just needing luck on the home bend. If this gelding gets the luck in running, he will be running home strong to stake his claim in the final 200m of the 2025m event.

Best Value at Cranbourne: Nakedness

In the second leg of the quaddie John McArdle will bring his three-year-old gelding, Nakedness, to Cranbourne after winning his last start at Mornington over 1500m on January 8. This son of So You Think ran second on debut at Yarra Valley over 1200m where he showed that he was looking for more ground, which is what he received next start at Mornington. At his most recent start, this gelding sat behind the speed on the rails before peeling off the leaders back to run away with a nice maiden win. Jamie Mott will take the reins on this gelding for the first time on Friday and from barrier three this guy should settle just behind the leaders and try to replicate his last-start maiden win.

What Launceston Races
Where Tasmanian Turf Club – Jellico St, Mowbray TAS 7248
When Friday, January 27, 2023
First Race 6pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

Racing heads to the Tasmanian Turf Club on Friday night for a nine-race program where the Listed Launceston Guineas takes centre stage. Despite the rail being out 4.5m the entire circuit and the track coming up a Soft 5 for racing, we expect every runner to get their chance if good enough, with the track to play fairly throughout as it has been in recent times.

The big night of racing in the ‘Apple Isle’ kicks off at 6pm AEDT.
Launceston Guineas: Dunkel

It does not take a genius to put Dunkel on top in the Listed Launceston Guineas. Patrick Payne’s three-year-old gelding has essentially been perfect in his four-start career, winning on three occasions and despite the plenty going wrong for him at his second start, he had the audacity to still finish second. This bloke should essentially be 4/4 and a win in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas beckons barring any bad luck. His win at Flemington on January 14 was breathtaking and considering he gave Soul Choice, who he meets again on Friday night, a start and a smacking, he should prove too good for his rivals once again. He gave Soul Choice 6.5kg’s last start and only has to give her 2kg this time around. In the small field of six, only bad luck gets Dunkel beaten in Friday night’s feature.
Launceston Guineas

Race 5 – Silks#1 Dunkel (5)

3yo Gelding | T: Patrick Payne | J: Harry Coffey (57kg)

$1.40 with Palmerbet
Best Bet at Launceston: Bello Beau

Despite this being Bello Beau’s first start against older horses, the Adam Trinder-trained three-year-old gains our best bet tag on Friday night. The Brazen Beau gelding comfortably accounted for all but the smart Russian Roni in the Tasmanian Guineas last time out and looks well placed to go one better in this on Friday. Harry Coffey jumps on the back of the progressive youngster for the first time and considering he has won six from nine and finished second on two other occasions, this guys just oozes class. Look for Coffey to use his early speed to negate barrier 11 and take up the running. Under a well-rated steer, we expect Bello beau to pack too many punches late on in the piece.
Best Bet

Race 7 – Silks#12 Bello Beau (11)

3yo Gelding | T: Adam Trinder | J: Harry Coffey (55kg)

$3.40 with Neds
Next Best at Launceston: Elmajay

Stuart Gandy sends his three-year-old filly Elmajay to the Launceston 1200m following a couple of decent performances to begin this campaign. She has placed at her both of her runs this time in and has been given a sight out in front. From barrier two, Troy Baker will have this girl in the lead not long after the barriers open and with a few of her main market rivals drawn out, we’re hoping the tactical advantage from the low barrier draw will prove to be the difference. The Wordsmith filly was only picked off in the shadows of the winning post on the Devonport Synthetic last time out and considering she is third-up from a spell, Elmajay should prove too hard to run down with race fitness on her side.
Next Best

Race 1 – silks#12 Elmajay (2)

Best Value at Launceston: Alpine Affair

With a bit of luck, we can bow out in style on Friday night when the John Blacker-trained Alpine Affair steps out over 1400m in the last. The four-year-old gelding has managed to win three of his seven starts this campaign and with Jordan Childs hopping on board, we’re hoping he can bring up a fourth victory this time in. He needs the race to be run at a genuine tempo considering he is a backmarker and with Diamond Bay a known leader and being drawn out wide, he should gain just what he wants. His turn of foot is arguably one of the best in the race and if he is within striking distance with 300m to go, Alpine Affair looks too hard to hold out.

RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Irish Prophet; 7-Dancing Rinca
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Older maidens meet over a mile on grass in the Friday opener in which trainer Neil Drysdale holds the aces with the two contenders. Irish Prophet earned a career top speed figure when fifth, beaten less than a length, in a similar affair at Del Mar in November and sports a healthy, steady series of workouts in recent weeks to have him fit and ready. He’s guaranteed an ideal ground-saving trip from his favorable rail draw, retains leading rider Juan Hernandez, and projects to be withing striking range throughout. Stablemate Dancing Rinca was second, beaten a neck, when worn down late in the same race our top pick exits, and likely will be taken back early and allowed to run late. With some help up front, he is sure to be heard from in the final furlong.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 2: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Naughty Evelyn; 4-Awesome Pamela
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Naughty Evelyn has been away since last May but projects as the controlling speed, and if not policed during the early stages she could take this restricted (nw-2) $16,000 field gate to wire. This low profile barn doesn’t win many but Umberto Rispoli knows this veteran mare well and hopefully will be able to hold her together in the final furlong. Awesome Pamela likes this main track (in the frame in four of five career starts) and is the most dangerous of the closing types. She’s a one-paced grinder but has numbers that fit and is a “must use” in rolling exotic play.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 3: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Sassy Nature
Backups/savers: 4-Devil Among Us

Forecast: Sassy Nature toyed with state-bred maiden fillies over this track and distance three weeks ago and returns on the one level raise while this time facing the boys. The daughter of Straight Fire was never off the bridle when coasting home to register a nine length score in a race that produced a powerful Beyer speed figure, and anything close to that performance will be more than good enough for a repeat score. If you would prefer to have some protection, you should also consider Devil Among Us as a saver just in case the favorite goes backwards. The Phil D’Amato-trained colt looked decent when graduating last month at Los Alamitos in what has proven to be a productive race, and while he’s much slower on figures than the filly he certainly should have plenty of room for further improvement.
__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 4: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Violet Crown; 8-Love Our Family
Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Best suggestion is to tread lightly here. Six of the nine entrants in this mile grass affair for state-bred maiden fillies exit the same race captured by Nyvan earlier this month, and none of them did anything particularly noteworthy behind the winner other than clunk up for a minor award in a slow, low-rated affair. In that race, Violet Crown was bumped hard off stride when trying to rally at the furlong pole and probably should have finished closer than fifth (beaten four and one-half lengths). It was her sixth career start and her numbers have stagnated but of the group she ran at least as well as runner-up Love Our Family, who made the lead as the controlling speed before proving little match for the winner. Rolling exotic players should at least use these two, plus anything else that you’d like to toss in.

__________________________________________________ ___________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 5: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Midnight Vow
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Midnight Vow exits a much better race – a maiden optional $40,000 claimer as opposed to this straight $40,000 affair – and based on numbers should be able to outrun this modest group. The Hector Palma-trained daughter of Broken Vow projects as the controlling speed based on our early fractional analysis, and if she can shake loose early without pressure it would be no surprise to see her wire the field. In a race in which nothing else catches the eye, let’s use her in the win pool and as a rolling exotic single.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 6: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: A-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Mi Hermano Ramon
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Mi Hermano Ramon won his debut last month at Del Mar around two turns like a high quality grass prospect and returns in this five runner non-winners of two Hillside Turf Course sprint to prove he can sprint as well as he routes. Based on his workouts since his win, the son of Creative Cause should have no difficulty with the turn back in trip. Similar to his first start, we’re expecting to see him relax off the pace during the early stages and then cut loose when given his cue. We’ll make him a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 7: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Saffa’s Day
Backups/savers: 6-As Amatter of Fact

Forecast: Saffa’s Day drops to the $32,000 level in his second start since being claimed for $50,000 by trainer Mark Glatt, certainly not a confidence-building maneuver, but in a weak race for the level the son of Carpe Diem can outrun this group with anything close to his best. Bug boy Aguilar stays aboard and should have this gelding close to the projected modest pace, perhaps even in front. On pure numbers, he’s the best of the lot, and having finished first or second in six of 15 career starts he’s always been fairly dependable when properly spotted. As Amatter of Fact seems likely to settle within striking range outside and then have every chance from the quarter pole home. The Union Rags gelding was well clear of the rest when second at this level at Del Mar in November in an effort that charts quite well with these, but his work tab since then has been noticeably spotty. If ready, he’ll be a factor.

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

RACE 8: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Circleofchampions; 3-Flint Stroll
Backups/savers: 4-So I’m Told; 6-Derecho Dandy

Forecast: Circleofchampions produced a career top speed figure when second in a restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claimer at Del Mar in November and returns protected in a sign of confidence while landing a favorable inside draw over a course he’s run well on in the past. A steady series of workouts should tick him over nicely, so let’s put the Carla Gaines-trained gelding on top and hope that he’s allowed to display the type of tactical speed that puts him on or near the lead throughout. Flint Stroll goes for new connections following a $32,000 claim when second at 3/5 over the local lawn three weeks ago. He’s solid on numbers and picks up top rider Juan Hernandez, so the son of Flintshire is certain to get plenty of play again. So I’m Told may lack a winning punch but he’s usually in the thick of things late and should at least get a piece of it. Derecho Dandy shows up in a starter $50,000 optional claimer after a four race series of disappointing sixth place finishes when facing allowance foes, and it’s hard to know if this is his proper level. His only win was accomplished in gate-to-wire fashion, so perhaps those tactics will be employed, but after making a clear lead in an all-weather race up north last month the son of Connect got run over and stopped to a walk. We’ll toss him in on a ticket as backup but nothing more than that.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

January 27, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands has a competitive 14-race card scheduled. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6

1-Gottalovemyshadow (5-1)-Steps up after a sharp score from the 8-hole on 1-22. This is a veteran who has done good work at M1 over the years (47-9-8-5) and will look for another top effort.
7-Onecrookedleg (6-1)-Raced well in 2 straight, then took a double bump up and was stuck with post 10. Willing to toss that start, fits better here, and gets a new pilot in Andrew McCarthy.

Race 7

1-Laurie Lee (9/2)-Recent form has been dull but drops again and should be in play with this post draw. Might be overlooked and could get a suck-round trip.
4-Addictivebehaviour (7/2)-Even try in last to finish 3rd although beaten only a neck. Was off 3 weeks before the last race and should be tighter here. Could be bet down but difficult to leave off the ticket.
5-A Better Game (3-1)-The race could be chalky and this mare should be a player at this level. The 1 & 8 should offer a better price but can be right there at the wire.
8-Skateboard Chic (6-1)-This 11-year-old comes off a strong effort and posted its first M1 picture. Has only made 4 starts here and bumps up but will look for another big try at a square price.

Race 8

3-Coolncalculating N (12-1)-Comes off 2 even performances after a sick scratch and did race better last week. This will be a test but does pick up McCarthy so will take a swing, and look for a big try at a price.
5-Lightning Leia (6-1)-Takes a significant drop and lands in the same class as a gate to wire win at M1 on 12-8. Mark MacDonald gets the assignment and will look for an aggressive steer, hopefully at a solid price.
6-Lady Rocknrolla A (3-1)-Also drops to the same level as a recent win. Has been in sharp form, winner in 5 of 6 starts, the last 3 at M1 and should be a player but could be over bet.

Race 9

2-Lenswoods Real Deal (9/2)-Comes off an even effort after shipping in from Freehold. Gingras grabs the lines tonight and should offer a fair price. Will likely be racing near the top of the stack and can use one move to roll by down the lane.
8-Safensound Hanover (3-1)-Got a perfect steer from McCarthy last week and closed quickly to pass a few down the lane. Will be bet but comes right back versus the same kind and the post should help the price.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Fair Grounds - Race #8
Picks Notes
#6 Zipping Molly She made just a mild move before fading in the debut run, but that was probably a tough ask to go two turns right out of the box, and I'm betting she'll show something better here.
#1 Easy Aces She's an obvious player in a bad race, but she has been pretty one-paced in her two tries at this level, and I wouldn't be surprised to see someone outkick her here.
#4 Onecallthatsall She has seemed to like the move around two turns in recent starts, and I think she'll be in line for a really good midpack trip here.
Race Summary Not a ton of confidence in those with more experience, and Zipping Molly probably has upside while trying this trip for the second time.

Fair Grounds - Race #6
Picks Notes
#2 Pursuit L'Harmonie She has run into a couple decent maiden winners since debuting in stakes company here opening weekend, and she has some appeal while getting around two turns on the turf. Probably tough today.
#8 Entitlement She's another going on the turf for the first time here after finishing just behind the top choice last time out, and these two logical players seem like a decent bet to settle this.
#7 Midnight Flame Wouldn't be shocked to see her take a step forward in this one, but she's got a long way to come to land this after a quick-fade debut.
Race Summary Pursuit L'Harmonie should get an okay trip in here if they can find their way off the fence a little bit, and I think she's got some upside while getting more distance to work with.

Fair Grounds - Race #7
Picks Notes
#3 Tulane Tryst He has some back runs that might make him the right one against the talented chalk, and he absolutely looked like a horse who needed a race last time out -- in hand, cruising up, and then stopping when the more serious running started. Like him a lot here.
#5 Strobe No doubt he's the one to beat with a big pedigree and four sharp efforts to his name from as many starts. Wondering if stakes dropper #2 High Cruise might keep him honest enough early to be vulnerable late? Also wouldn't be a shock to see him win this by five. Tough call at a short price.
#2 High Cruise Pace will probably try to go for it early, but he's likely to have Strobe breathing down his neck the entire way and might be hard pressed to stay for much more than a share here.
Race Summary Tulane Tryst is the obvious alternative to deserving favorite Strobe, and he ran last out like he could be sitting on a much, much improved effort this time around -- and he's got a little class to him compared to the chalk who has run through allowance conditions.

Laurel Park - Race #1
Picks Notes
#5 CELTIC COUSEN (7-5) Knocking on winning door, blinkers could make the difference.
#6 CROSSLAND (6-1) Ran second from on and off the pace in his last four route races, starts fresh.
#1 RAPPER ZAPPER (2-1) Tracked slow pace, followed move of 3-to-2 winner, missed by a neck.
Race Summary CELTIC COUSEN finished well in all three starts but settled for minor awards at short odds, twice at this distance. His dam was a $216k earner and stakes winner at one mile. He should handle this field, so bet to win and place.

Laurel Park - Race #3
Picks Notes
#7 BORUFF (7-2) No threat to quality MSW rivals, stepped it up a notch for January works, gets Lasix.
#5 BEST CHOICE BABY (3-1) Rallied for second and third at this level, gets blinkers off claim.
#2 MUNGO MAGIC (5-2) Debuts for Russell; dam finished second in MSW debut and follow-up stakes.
Race Summary BORUFF kept quality Maiden Special Weight company, meeting the likes of recent stakes winner Prince of Jericho (3-5, $148k) and Noah Chance, who won a $40,000 claimer by 6-1/4 lengths Dec. 17. He worked in :48.4 on January 8 and could be forwardly placed on the class drop. He is today’s Best Bet.

Laurel Park - Race #7
Picks Notes
#4 QUICK QUICK WIT (9-2) Ranged up, hung around for third in improved second start, tries long sprint.
#2 HE’S PURE TALENT (8-1 Debuts for Gonzalez, who also trained dam Mila Jane (7-16, $142k).
#5 SEVEN’S ELEVEN (5-1) Chased 2-1 winner, finished second in game try as first-time gelding.
Race Summary QUICK QUICK WIT’S true colors showed with Lasix in his second start. He circled the turn 4-wide, had aim on the two favorites and settled for third. He must navigate an extra furlong in a potentially strong field, but he offers enough value for a win and place bet.

Soccer | Arsenal vs Manchester City

Play on: Manchester City -133 at linepros

Free Soccer Prediction from Doc’s Sports:
English FA Cup Take Manchester City over Arsenal (3 p.m. EST, Friday January 27)
(Graded after regulation time - 90min - plus injury time - if game ends in a DRAW we have a LOSER) Arsenal is surprisingly atop the Premier League table, but we don’t think they are the better side here. And this is an FA Cup match and not an EPL matchup. But we think the result will be similar to recent meetings between these clubs. Manchester City has a +11 goal differential in the last five matchups regardless of the status of the match. All have been City wins. City is five points back in the EPL and we think when all is said and done that they will be the better side, and we expect their run of dominance in this series to continue on Friday.

NBA | Magic vs Heat

Play on: Magic +8 -110 at SC Consensus

1* NBA - Magic/Heat FREE Pick on Magic +8
Friday's Free NBA Pick is on the Orlando Magic as a 8-point road dog against the Miami Heat. This to me is just too many points for the Magic to be getting to pass up. Miami has shown some life of late, winning 6 of their last 8, but Orlando has also been playing well. Magic are 3-1 SU in their last 4 games and have gone 6-1 ATS over their last 7. There's also a little more juice to this game with both teams being from Florida. Would not surprise me at all if the Magic won this game outright. Bet Orlando +8!

The Air Force Falcons travel to New Mexico to take on the Lobos on Friday night. Air Force is 12-9 SU overall this year while New Mexico comes in with an 18-3 SU overall record on the season. Air Force is 62-34 ATS last 96 games as a road underdog of 12 1/2 points or more. Air Force is 5-1 ATS last 6 road games against a team with a winning home record. Air Force is 5-1 ATS last 6 road games. Air Force is 4-1 ATS last 5 games after a SU loss of more than 20 points. The road team is 6-1 ATS last 7 meetings in this series. We'll recommend a small play on Air Force tonight! Thanks and good luck, Rocky

NHL | Flames vs Seattle Kraken

Play on: Seattle Kraken -109 at linepros

Friday NHL Free play. My selection is on Seattle over Calgary at 10:05 pm et on Friday.
The Flames dropped a 5-1 decision against the lowly Blackhawks last night - their second loss at the hands of Chicago this month. It's hard to imagine that head coach Darryl Sutter's time might be running out in Calgary given how disappointing the Flames have been this season. I don't think it gets any easier for them on Friday as they head to Seattle to face a revenge-minded Kraken squad. Seattle posted a 6-1 win over the Canucks two nights ago, climbing back to the .500 mark at home this season. While a .500 home record isn't anything to brag about, the Flames check in a woeful 9-15 on the road. This is a tough spot for Calgary, playing on a back-to-back and looking ahead to the extended All-Star break that follows (it won't play again until February 6th). Take Seattle.
