RACE 1: Post: 12:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-Bottle of Smoke; 4-Big Talker; 8-Doc Adams
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: The Saturday opener is a competitive allowance optional claiming main track miler for older horses that requires a spread in rolling exotic play. We’ll use three and hope to get by. Bay area shipper Bottle of Smoke, freshened since November, is a genuine and consistent gelding that has done most of his good work on synthetic, but he’s capable of winning over conventional dirt as well and projects to enjoy an ideal second flight, stalking trip from his favorable inside (post two) draw. The O. J. Jauregui-trained son of Northern Indy is solid on numbers and should fire a big shot off the bench after a long and length campaign through most of 2022. Big Talker has run well over this main track in the past and warrants a big look off his easy win two races back at Los Alamitos. He lacks tactical speed, but with some help up front he should be heard from late. Doc Adams is drawn a little farther out than we’d prefer (post eight) but is a three-time winner from just five starts over the local dirt strip and has several back numbers that are better than par for this level. The main concern is the somewhat suspicious class drop to $20,000 after having won four of his last five starts in better company. Sounds like he might be for sale.

RACE 2: Post: 12:32 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Awesome Taylor; 5-Carpe Fortuna; 6-Glenall
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Here’s another challenging affair, this one on grass over a mile for starter optional claiming fillies and mares. Awesome Taylor looks fairly intriguing, so we’ll give her the edge on top. Freshened since November and trying turf for the first time, the daughter of Classic Empire won her only previous two turn try on dirt at Oaklawn Park last year and shows a steady, healthy series of workouts at San Luis Rey Downs to have her fit and ready. The Peter Miller-trained 4-year-old removes blinkers (love that angle), retains Flavian Prat, and should inherit an ideal pace-stalking early position. Carpe Fortuna is winless in five prior starts over the local lawn, but she has hit the board three times and is exiting a series of tougher allowance races. At this level, she can be dangerous on the front end under Frankie if not pressured early. Glenall surfaces in a claimer for the first time and in this league must be considered a major player. She has a prior win over this course and distance and could be dangerous if given the patient ride she prefers.

RACE 3: Post: 1:05 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Worcester
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: This year’s renewal of the Robert B. Lewis S.-G3 drew just four starters, all from the Bob Baffert barn. Worcester is a maiden after two starts but actually might be the best prospect of the bunch. The late-running son of Empire Maker displayed improved by 19 Beyer speed figure points between his first and second starts and now stretches out for the first time to a distance he seems sure to enjoy. The other three Baffert starters are essentially speed types, so top rider Juan Hernandez can settle behind that trio and then go after the leaders when the field heads to the top of the lane. We’re fully expecting the late charge with be more than sufficient to tag the speed, so let’s make him a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 4: Post: 1:38 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): Closing Remarks 2-Hamwood Flier
Backups/Savers: 1-Bay Storm

Forecast: Closing Remarks always has been a bit too one-paced to be a truly top class turf mare but it takes one to beat her, as recent Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Queen Goddess has done in their last two confrontations. There’s nothing in this year’s renewal of the Megahertz Stakes-G3 that good so we’re expecting the Carla Gaines-trained mare to regain her winning form. An excellent second behind ‘Goddess in Robert J. Frankel Stakes-G3 in late December, the California-bred daughter of Vronsky should step forward in her second start off a layoff, and in race loaded with speed she projects to settle in the second flight and then have every chance from the quarter pole home to grind out a victory. Turf master trainer Phil D’Amato has three entrants in field, the most dangerous of which may be Hamwood Flier, the speedy Irish-bred mare who finished fourth in the Matriarch S.-G1 at Del Mar in early December behind subsequent champion Regal Glory. A dyed-in-the-wool front runner, the daughter of Kodiac should have things to herself up front, and against this cut-below-the-best field she may be able to stick it out. A repeat of her victory over this course and distance in the listed Swingtime Stakes two runs back will make her especially dangerous. Drawn just inside of Hamwood Flier on the fence is Bay Storm, who seems sure to inherit a stalking, ground-saving trip. First or second in eight of 11 career outings, the South Florida shipper is quite competitive on speed figures and is worthing including on your ticket, at least as a backup.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 5: Post: 2:14 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Rhythem On Stage; 2-Upward Mobility
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Four of these exit the same race won by next out winner Cousteau and the other three are first time starters. Let’s use the best of each grouping. Rhythem On Stage finished second in the aforementioned race last month and in fact has been a runner-up in both of his last two starts. The Carla Gaines-trained gelding lacks tactical speed but usually finds himself within range at the head of the lane, and after four career starts he’s due to produce a forward move. If he’s what his form says he is (no world beater) there’s a reasonable opportunity for a fresh face in this six furlong dirt sprint for state-bred sophomores. The Peter Miller-trained Upward Mobility has been hidden away at San Luis Rey Downs but he’s bred to win early (Smiling Tiger), and the work tab contains some decent moves so we suspect he can run enough to be a threat first crack out of the box, especially with Ramon Vasquez, one of the barn’s “go-to” riders, taking the call.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 6: Post: 2:51 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Tom’s Beauty; 1-Ready Jet Go; 3-Briefcase Girl
Backups/savers: 10-Carmen Miranda

Forecast: Tom’s Beauty didn’t get the clearest of runs when rallying to finish a good third before galloping out strongly in a similar grass dash for first-level allowance fillies and mares at Del Mar in November and returns with an extra furlong to work with over a course she’s won on in the past. The lightly raced filly likes to settle and blast home, and with good racing luck and a decent pace to set things up the Jeff Mullins-trained 4-year-old should be capable of producing a winning late kick. Ready Jet Go, a willing fourth in the same race our top pick exits, is guaranteed a ground-saving trip and is likely to be heard from late. Briefcase Girl ran quite well over this course and distance during the fall season and a repeat of that performance today puts her squarely in the hunt. Also worth tossing in, at least as a backup, is Carmen Miranda, primarily a miler but a possible late threat under Flavian Pride despite her extreme outside draws.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 7: Post: 3:21 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): Arrowthegreat; 3-Big Hat Willie; 8-Motorcade
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Arrowthegreat displayed a reasonable amount of ability in his only start last summer at Del Mar, appearing a bit green and very late changing leads when rallying steadily to be second behind Newgate in a decent maiden special weight sprint for juveniles. The son of Arrogate returns for trainer Dan Blacker in this seven furlong affair with Lasix and without blinkers for a barn that has solid stats with comeback runners. The work tab looks promising, so if he returns as well as he left this sophomore gelding may be the one to beat. Big Hat Willie, second off a $50,000 claim by Peter Miller, remains protected in maiden optional claiming company in a sign of confidence, and with improving speed figures and the proper style for this extended sprint trip the son of First Samurai seems likely be a heard from in the late stages. He finished a solid runner-up behind class dropper Nullarbor last time out in the same race that the slow starting first timer Motorcade rallied to finish third in a promising debut. The son of Lookin At Lucky hails from the John Sadler barn, which boasts very strong stats with the second time starter angle. We’ll be surprised if the winner isn’t one of the three listed above, with the edge on top going to Arrowthegreat.

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________

RACE 8: Post: 3:53 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Escape Artist
Backups/savers: 11-Eastbound; 4-Maltese Falcon

Forecast: This nine furlong maiden turf affair for sophomores is a better than average affair that promises to be slowly run early with a projected race flow that might greatly benefit the second time starter Escape Artist. The son of Good Magic established the running and proved hard to down when a promising runner-up in a similar affair over a mile in late December, and despite today’s longer nine furlong trip the Michael McCarthy-trained ridgling should have every chance to the control this field gate to wire. He’ll get Lasix while retaining Johnny V. for a barn that has useful stats with second time starters, so let’s give him the edge on top. Eastbound must overcome an extreme outside draw but ran well in a runner-up performance to next out Sham Stakes winner Reincarnate over the local lawn two races back when finding his best stride late to be well clear of the others. A subsequent main track outing was disappointing, but we expect a snap back performance with this surface switch back to grass. Maltese Falcon finished with interest when fourth in the same race our top pick exits and seems quite capable of stepping forward with that effort underneath him. Second of 14 in his debut in England last fall, the son of Caravaggio has the makings of a useful colt and gets Lasix, Frankie, and more distance to promote his closing kick.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 9: Post: 4:23 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Fun to Dream
Backups/savers: 5-Awake At Midnyte

Forecast: Fun to Dream and Awake At Midnyte finished one-two in the La Brea S.-G1 over this track and distance in late December while more than three lengths clear of the rest and it will be somewhat surprising if they don’t do so again in this year’s edition of the Santa Monica S.-G2 for older fillies and mares. There’s a two pound weight shift in favor of ‘Midnyte, for whatever that’s worth, but ‘Dream has a bit more tactical speed in a race that projects to have soft early splits. In a race that probably should be left alone, we’ll include both in our rolling exotics.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 10: Post: 4:53 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Air Force Red; 10-Dark Shift
Backups/savers: 3-Anaconda

Forecast: Air Force Red has won his last two races with authority and probably has even more improvement in him. The Leonard Powell-trained gelding now has captured half of his 10 career starts, and while he’s probably most comfortable as the controlling speed he can stalk and pounce if the situation dictates. His win down the hill in the Joe Hernandez Stakes earned a career top speed figure and his Lure Stakes triumph before that showed he could handle this two turn mile trip. Dark Shift didn’t bring his best stuff in his U.S. debut at Keeneland last fall when failing to land a blow in a strong allowance middle distance affair, but he was a high class handicapper last year in Europe, with victories that included the 29-runner Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, so you have to respect him, especially with Frankie in the saddle. Eastern shipper Anaconda has won over this course in the past and has recent numbers in New York that make him dangerous. Comfortably drawn in post three, the Joe Sharp-trained veteran should draft into a cozy, second flight early position and then have every chance from there.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Late Pick 4 Analysis February 4, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has 14 races scheduled and hopefully the weather will cooperate. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 10. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 10

5-Belmont Royale N (3-1)-Came the 2nd half in 54.2 but couldn't catch the leader. Drops and was off 2 weeks before the last race. Looks like the one to beat.
7-Burnham Boy N (4-1)-Takes on much better after pacing the 2nd half in .53 with a 25.2 last quarter. That was the 1st start on Lasix and his M1 debut. Willing to take a swing the performance wasn't a fluke and the Ryder barn is posting 25% winner in the last 30 days.

Race 11

1-Mister Spot A (5-1)-Bumps up after a big try from post 10 to dead-heat for the win. Does well racing near the top of the stack and with this post draw Gingras shouldn't have an issue working that trip.
3-Baileys Rock N (3-1)-Gets a positive driver change in Dunn and drops to a more comfortable level. Should be right there at the wire but might be over bet. Big M record is nothing to write home about, has posted only 2 wins in 33 starts.
4-Rockin The Aces (5-1)-Raced from the back at this class last week and zipped home with a 25.4 last quarter to finish a distant 4th. This veteran knows how to win, should be very competitive versus this kind and will look for an aggressive steer in the 3rd start for the Saunders barn.

Race 12

3-Andres Hanover (5-1)-This is the 2nd start in sequence and drops to a level which should yield a good result. This is only the tenth race since 2022 so there have been issues for this 5-year-old. But could be sitting on a big try and lands in a good spot for an overdue win.
5-Literl Lad Hanover (6-1)-Has had trouble putting 2 strong races together and not sure what happened last week. If the pattern holds this should be a better effort. Could surprise if Joe B provides a sharp steer.
10-Bet On Blake (10-1)-Looking for a long shot and Mark MacDonald gets the drive for the Burke barn. Has been racing better and this is the 4th start off the bench. Has the gate speed to get a decent seat, and could pop at a price if the upswing continues in a race without a standout.

Race 13

1-Duddie's Lor (5-1)-This veteran grinded it out and closed nicely last time. Finally gets a better draw after starting from posts 8-9-7-9. Getting the rail should help, won on 12-17 on the engine at M1. Dave Miller should work an efficient trip and could offer a square price.
4-Paternity Suit A (8-1)-Here is another who has been stuck outside in recent starts (8-8-8). This 10-year-old fits well and McCarthy could work a suck-around trip. This looks like the best chance so far this year to snag an overdue win.
6-Dealer's Table (3-1)-Recent form has been dull and keeps dropping looking for a spark. May have found a field to beat and this will be 1st time Dunn is steering. Having that pilot probably hurts the price but maybe he can wake up this 7-year-old.

0.50 Late Pick 4

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Fair Grounds - Race #4

Picks
Notes

#2 Frosty Diva
Tactical type has proven a good fit at similar kinds of levels, and she might be the right one as something like the second choice in here. She should be right up in a perfect spot in a race without a ton of serious early burn.

#7 Ghostly Girl
Likely chalk drops in for the first time with several running lines that would probably make her tough, but she hasn't finished her races with a ton of enthusiasm, and I see a scenario in which someone is able to outgame her to the wire.

#1 Prize Debate
Nothing so far through three starts for this one, but she has shown a little bit of early pace in a couple of her starts, and maybe she flashes a little speed and sticks around better today while racing for a tag for the first time.

Race Summary
Feel like the winner should come from one of the two of Frosty Diva and Ghostly Girl, and Prize Debate is my price player to try to get in the frame with one of those.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#7 Shaniah
Think she has a little bit of mid-range price appeal in a race where there should be a handful of forward players stacked up in the early going, and she's a pretty reliable finisher with some running lines that make her competitive here. Decent lean here.

#1 Basalt Street
Think she's one of the ones in here while moving back into open company, but she fared well with open runners in Canada, so I don't think she's overmatched in here. The last two were sharp, and she might land a cozy inside trip.

#3 Beleout
She's capable of big things on her best day, and she has shown an affinity for the local footing. She has a mild tactical gear that might keep her from getting caught up early.

Race Summary
Shaniah has solid rallying form, and I think there might be just enough early speed in here to set things up for her to get past them late, and her ceiling is high enough to capitalize if she brings one of her better efforts.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#10 Maasai Warrior
He'll rise on relatively short rest if he's able to get in here, and I really liked his turf debut last time out when he flashed some powerful foot on the front end most of the way. Dangerous if he goes.

#9 Super Wise
Have been chasing this guy a little bit in recent starts, but I think he gets another good trip here and can adapt to however the pace unfolds with the other two potential forward players.

#5 Monarch Man
He might be a little cheap for these right now, but did score his graduation run over the local turf in maiden claiming company, and he has some versatility that should help him find a good tracking trip here.

Race Summary
Maasai Warrior was sharp in the turf debut last time out and merits a long look back with winners if he gets in, otherwise it's back to Super Wise for me as likely the most reliable of the forward players with some compelling enough back turf form.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Laurel Park - Race #1

Picks
Notes

#8 CAUSE TO DREAM (7-2)
Rounding to another good race, should get jump on main rivals.

#5 IF THEN (2-1)
Rallied for a win, two seconds and a third in her last four starts, all with Cruz aboard.

#6 MO FIRE (5-1)
Finished in the money in 8 of 12 starts at Laurel Park at various distances.

Race Summary
CAUSE TO DREAM ranged up on the loose leader while in-hand for the stretch drive. She edged clear to win in the 12-horse field at this distance, a nice follow-up to her prior start at 6F, when she opened a clear lead from post 10 and held second. Bet to win and place and play 8-5 and 8-6 exactas.

Laurel Park - Race #5

Picks
Notes

#5 CLUBMAN (5-2)
Laurel lover projects ideal trip under same conditions of his victory two back.

#3 OXIDE (9-2)
Upstaged series of runner-up finishes with romp, could return quick claim dividend.

#8 FORLOVEOFCOUNTRY (2-1)
Has speed, gets class relief, wears hood, offers little value.

Race Summary
CLUBMAN, who earned most of his $550k bankroll at Laurel Park, won under these conditions two starts back, repeated at a higher level and should sit a good stalking trip in his bid for three in a row. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5-8 exacta box.

Laurel Park - Race #9

Picks
Notes

#1 SISTER SPIRIT (15-1)
Price stab in dismal field with second-time Lasix in second start for barn.

#2 IRISH LACE (3-1)
Lost contact with odds-on winner in five-horse field, gets blinkers.

#4 SWEET FACTOR (3-1)
Backed off leaders on turn, re-bid to finish a game second at this level.

Race Summary
In a field that is a combined 0-for-45 with two runner-up finishes, it’s worth trying a longshot. SISTER SPIRIT back-pedaled in her first start for this barn but ran okay in her two prior races at 6F and 7F. She gets second-time Lasix and an upset call at 15-1 on the morning line. Bet to win and place.

COMMENTS: ARABIAN LION has been working out well at Santa Anita. NEWGATE upped his speed figure in the last three and could make it four in his second start after a layoff. WORCESTER improved a lot in race two from its debut. HARD TO FIGURE is the fourth horse in a four field and looks a cut below the others.

COMMENTS: HAMWOOD FLIER won both of her Santa Anita races and should be involved from go to photo. SCHOOL DANCE is just a head away from winning four in a row. ONE SILK STOCKING showed much better pace through the first half mile of her last race. CLOSING REMARKS ran the top last race speed figure and could take it higher in the second race after a layoff.

ANGEL NADESHIKO never ran off the board in six on fast dirt. SAMURAI CHARM missed as the favorite in his last. Trainer Peter Miller bounces back at 23 percent the next time around the track.

THERE GOES HARVARD has been off since the end of July but training sessions say he is ready to run today. ANACONDA made up late ground in the last seven races.

Keeneland Select Derby Prep Hotlist - Holy Bull Stakes - February 4
Feb. 03, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
The $250,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3), Gulfstream Park, Race 12, 5:43 p.m. ET
(8) Rocket Can comes off a nice effort in a Churchill Downs allowance race last fall and has been training in solid fashion. Trainer Bill Mott is having a fine GP meet, as evidenced by last weekend’s Pegasus World Cup, and this 3-year-old should have enough tactical speed to offset the outside post. In a field that seems more like an allowance race than a stakes, he’s an intriguing possibility. (4) Cyclone Mischief ran a huge race last time and if he duplicates that effort, he’ll breeze to victory. But he’s likely to bounce and that could make him vulnerable here. (1) Lord Miles rallied strongly while racing wide and missed by less than a length in the mile Mucho Macho Man. The added distance here and a ground-saving trip should suit him. (6) Legacy Isle won the Mucho Macho Man but was disqualified and placed second. His early speed makes him a dangerous here, but he figures to receive plenty of pressure in this field and will need a superb effort to hang on. Betting strategy: 8 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 1-4-6-8.

Gulfstream Park Hotlist - February 4
Feb. 03, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
4th race – (5) Demurely (A) missed by a nose last time and should work out a winning trip here. (1) Oaxaca returns to Tapeta, where he was victorious three starts ago. (4) Lena the Lion has speed and looks like the one to catch. (7) Heir to the Roar figures to be a stretch threat here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-7. Doubles: 1-4-5-7 with 1-4-5-6.
5th race – (4) Mutaawid was a fast-closing third in his turf debut and should prevail over this field. (1) Just So is a firster from Brown who appears to have some talent. (5) King’s Fortune debuts for Pletcher and merits attention. (6) Carlin Clan was second in his last two starts and is overdue for a win. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-6.
7th race – (2) Shadow Sphinx showed little in a Grade 2 stakes and may thrive with some class relief in today’s test. (4) Samburu showed improve speed last time and should benefit from a switch to Irad. (6) Richiesgotgame returns to turf and should perk up. (5) Coinage figures to be well-suited by today’s distance. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-6.
9th race – (2) Souzak (B) had a troubled trip in his U.S. debut and can make amends for that setback here. (1) Candidate seeks a fourth straight win and should emerge as the main rival. (4) Major Dude was second in a stakes and should make his presence felt. (5) Lights of Broadway can shine in this field. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-5. Doubles: 1-2-4-5 with 2-3-5-7.
10th race – (7) Undervalued Asset was an easy debut winner and should pass the class test here. (8) Red Carpet Ready is a perfect 2-for-2 and will be hard to handle. (5) Apropos exits a sharp maiden win and cannot be ignored. (3) Atomically makes her first start since the Breeders’ Cup and will be dangerous on her best try. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-7-8.

Feb. 03, 2023

Race 10 at Gulfstream Park | Saturday February 4 | Post Time 4:17 PM Eastern
Forward Gal Stakes – Grade 3 | Purse $125,000 | Seven Furlongs | Fillies, Three Years Old
Top Contenders:
Twice as Sweet (2) has to get top billing among the three horses with the highest probability to win (in my opinion) as she opens at 10 to 1 odds. That’s in spite of her being one of just four horses among the 10 entered with a stakes win. Two of the other three earned those wins in restricted Florida sire stakes so she’s one of only two which have won an “open” stakes (the other being Red Carpet Ready). Twice as Sweet earned that win in November after a runner-up effort, win and another runner-up effort to start her career so showed a lot of talent to that point, particularly in the two wins when maturely relaxing off the pace early and running to the front late. In her only start since the win, at the end of December in a stakes at Fair Grounds, she was six paths wide into the stretch as she rallied from seventh of eighth and missed second by a pair of noses in another big effort as the winner had drawn off by three lengths. Tyler Gaffalione gets on and the filly earned a field high 91 Equibase Speed Figure in that Smart Halo Stakes win in November, which is the highest (fastest) figure in the field as well. Now making her first start as a three year old, she could blow past that effort and win this race in an upset.
Red Carpet Ready (8), as previously mentioned, is the only other “open” stakes winner in the field. She earned that win in the second start of her career, near the end of November, in the Fern Creek Stakes. Like Twice as Sweet, Red Carpet Ready showed maturity sitting off the pace then blasted home to win by three lengths. She was flattered by the runner-up, who came back to win, and with any improvement off the 88 figure earned and now as a newly turned three year old this gal could get the job done here.
Undervalued Asset (7) is the last of the three main win contenders but the one most likely to be bet down from her 7 to 2 starting odds. That’s because she’s trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr. She’s only run once, on November 10 of last year, but that was a strong eight length victory in which she was eased up late or could have won by more. Similar to Red Carpet Ready’s last race, Undervalued Asset earned an 87 figure and has every right to improve upon it in her first start as a three year old.
Win bets: Twice as Sweet (2) at 5 to 2 or more.
I might also consider a win bet on Red Carpet Ready (8) at 3 to 1 or more.
Exactas:
Box Twice As Sweet (2), Undervalued Asset (7) and Red Carpet Ready (8)
Trifectas:
Twice As Sweet (2), Undervalued Asset (7) and Red Carpet Ready (8) over ALL over Twice As Sweet (2), Undervalued Asset (7) and Red Carpet Ready (8).
At the $0.50 minimum level the cost of the trifecta above is $18. We win if any two of the three finish first and third. This compliments the exacta where we win if any two of the three finish first and second. We win twice if all three finish in the top three.

#5 NAUTILUS (BRZ) (ML=4/1)
#8 CURRENT (ML=12/1)
#4 BLUEGRASS PARKWAY (ML=8/1)

NAUTILUS (BRZ) - A horse coming back this quickly after a good race is a good sign. It looks like Ramos had to know this horse on January 7th when riding him for the first time. Back aloft again today. Even though he isn't from around here, when a thoroughbred has finished in the money at a major foreign track he will usually give a good account of himself soon after shipping. Coming off a fourth place finish at Turfway Park, some may pass this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable morning line odds today. CURRENT - This thoroughbred likes to win at different tracks. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. Based on morning drills, I look for this gelding to run a big race. You'll be making money left and right by turning your bankroll onto this jock/handler combination. BLUEGRASS PARKWAY - I like to wager on this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a good contest within the last thirty days. Landeros rode this horse for the first time last time out and comes right back in today's race. PP lines show this horse with three improving Equibase speed figures. Landeros should be on a live one today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 VERSTAPPEN (ML=7/2), #3 TIBERIUS MERCURIUS (ML=4/1),

VERSTAPPEN - This less than sharp equine ran a run-of-the-mill speed fig in the last race. He shouldn't improve and will likely lose in today's race running that number. TIBERIUS MERCURIUS - This horse hasn't been close in either of his last couple of efforts.

https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - NAUTILUS (BRZ) - Has the class to stalk the pace then make a move on the turn, taking control as they roll in the homestretch.

# 7 CONGRUENT 5/1

# 4 MAJOR DUDE 5/2

# 2 SOUZAK (FR) 8/1

CONGRUENT has a solid shot to take this race. Ran a sharp last race. With a formidable 88 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's competition. I can't pass on this colt given one of the strongest rider and handler combos on the grounds. MAJOR DUDE - He ought to be given a shot given the very good speed figures. Trainer boasts very strong win numbers at this distance and surface. SOUZAK (FR) - This colt is a key contender based on his earnings per start in turf route contests. #2 HAMWOOD FLIER (IRE) (ML=4/1)
#3 NADETTE (FR) (ML=5/1)
#4 CLOSING REMARKS (ML=7/2)

HAMWOOD FLIER (IRE) - I expect a lot from this race horse. Her speed figures under similar conditions are tops in this field. Don't look any further. This pony has my money. Way too much early speed. This trainer brings horses to the grass conditioned to win, winning over 20 pct of the time under similar conditions. The last speed fig of 111 is the top last race speed rating in the field. NADETTE (FR) - Rispoli rode this horse for the first time last out and comes right back in today's race. Based on the TrackMaster data I've reviewed, this filly should run well off the vacation. CLOSING REMARKS - This mare has been working well, and the recent bullet work says she's primed for a top effort today. Solid average class rating on this horse. Should have the capability to run well on the turf.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SCHOOL DANCE (ML=3/1), #1 BAY STORM (ML=5/1), #8 OAKHURST (ML=8/1),

SCHOOL DANCE - Pedestrian speed fig in the last race at Santa Anita at 1 1/4 miles. Don't think this steed will improve too much today. BAY STORM - This horse ran a disappointing speed figure last race out. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely get beat in today's race running that rating. OAKHURST - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked sharp of late. Common speed rating last race out at Santa Anita at 1 1/4 miles. Don't feel this vulnerable equine will improve too much in today's event.

https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - NADETTE (FR) - This filly looks prime for a big run today. She recorded a nice final fraction at Santa Anita on October 29th.

# 4 FIREWATER JAKE 8/1

# 2 EMERALD FOREST 6/5

# 5 ALL WEST 9/5

FIREWATER JAKE looks to be a respectable contender and is a very good value bet given the line. Overall the speed figs of this horse look very good in this race. Could beat this group of animals given the 99 Equibase speed fig earned in his last outing. This gelding has some longshot angles I like to bet on. EMERALD FOREST - Lately Gutierrez has been scorching which may give the edge to this gelding. Has decent early speed and will probably fare soundly against this field. ALL WEST - Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of strong win percentage - 25 percent - at this distance & surface. Ran a sharp last race.

Race of the Week: Holy Bull at Gulfstream | Saturday, Feb. 4

February 1, 2023 | By Jeremy Plonk

The Lead:
The first of 3 graded stakes in the Florida Derby series gets underway Saturday in the $250,000 Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park. Named for the 1994 Florida Derby winner and eventual Horse of the Year, the Holy Bull matches Triple Crown aspirants at 1-1/16 miles around 2 turns. It will be the longest race to date for 5 of the 8 entrants.

Players at Xpressbet and 1/ST BET can enjoy up to a $10 money-back special on Holy Bull Stakes win bets if their win bets finish second or third.

Field Depth:
None of the runners entered has won a stakes to date, while LEGACY ISLE, MR BOB and LORD MILES are listed stakes-placed. There is no decided class edge amongst these.

Pace:
WEST COAST COWBOY and CYCLONE MISCHIEF have the most pace of the inner-drawn runners, while LEGACY ISLE is a candidate to make the front while attempting to cross over that pair into the clubhouse turn. This does not look like a fast pace, and it's a configuration heavily favorable to those who can save ground and run near the front.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

LORD MILES: Rallying third-place finisher in the local Mucho Macho Man Stakes (a 1-turn mile), galloping out as well as any past the wire. He has a bullet workout since then, bred for the additional distance and makes a highly notable jockey switch to leading rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. Sure seems like all the chips are in the middle of the table.

WEST COAST COWBOY: No match for LEGACY ISLE in allowance race in November and looks to be second fiddle in the Saffie Joseph Jr. barn to LORD MILES.

SHADOW DRAGON: $375K juvenile purchase with modest pedigree was more of a win-early bidder at age 2, but NY-bred didn't make it to the races until September and has been absent since lackluster stakes try at Aqueduct in October. Hot jockey-trainer combo in Jose Ortiz-Bill Mott, but would be a surprise.

CYCLONE MISCHIEF: Likely favorite has won 2 of last 3, including fast 1-turn mile allowance over the track January 8. Good draw, good running style for this trip. Beaten less than 3 lengths by Instant Coffee, who since their matchup returned to also win the Grade 3 Lecomte at Fair Grounds.

MR BOB: Could show more early speed with the addition of blinkers after a troubled start in the Mucho Macho Man. But patient-riding Joel Rosario might not be the perfect fit for that. Note Irad Ortiz Jr. jumps off to pilot LORD MILES.

LEGACY ISLE: Rocketed from the rail in the Mucho Macho Man and was first under the wire, only to be disqualified for interference in a marginal call by the stewards. No one's beaten him to the wire yet in 3 starts, but there's serious question he'll be as effective around 2 turns based on very slow final quarters in the 1-turn races. Only 1 work since the Mucho Macho Man indicates that race might have knocked him out a bit more than his returning rivals.

IL MIRACOLO: Ran extremely hard chasing wicked pace in Mucho Macho Man Stakes and gave way late. A more one-paced kind of tempo could keep him in the mix much longer this time, so he's a candidate to improve his placing at a price. Love the fact he's had 3 works since his last race vs. 2 or 1 for his previous rivals in that race. His prior attempts over the track all have been quite solid.

ROCKET CAN: Wide draw will provide some challenge, but he handled such a hurdle in his Churchill maiden win in October. Trainer Bill Mott coming off a huge Saturday at Gulfstream with 3 wins, including $3 million Pegasus World Cup. Seemed to improve in all 4 starts at 2. Colt who edged him in last allowance bid since returned to run a modest third, splitting the field in the Lecomte at Fair Grounds.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
CYCLONE MISCHIEF has a win over the track, a fantastic draw and a prime running style for this distance / track configuration.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
IL MIRACOLO is the pick to rebound at a very nice number.

Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$60 win IL MIRACOLO. $10 exacta key-box IL MIRACOLO with LORD MILES and CYCLONE MISCHIEF ($40).

Jon White: Status Quo for Kentucky Derby Top 10

February 1, 2023 | By Jon White

Arabian Knight retains the top spot on my Kentucky Derby Top 10 this week after a dominant victory in Oaklawn Park’s Grade III Southwest Stakes last Saturday (Jan. 28) for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, trainer of Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify.

What did Baffert think of Arabian Knight’s Southwest? Baffert said the colt’s performance was “like an American Pharoah-type race.”

Wow. That’s high praise.

The Southwest was contested in the sort of weather that makes umbrellas important. Dashing to the front at once, Arabian Knight and Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez set the pace on the sloppy track.

After Arabian Knight had a two-length cushion with a furlong to go, he increased his advantage thereafter to win by 5 1/2 lengths in 1:43.50 as the 2-5 favorite.

Red Route One, trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, trailed through the early furlongs and rallied for second at 15-1 while never threatening the winner. Frosted Departure ended up third at 46-1.

Corona Bolt, sent off as the 5-2 second favorite, finished sixth while racing around two turns for the first time. He was two for two going into the Southwest following wins in a Churchill Downs maiden special weight sprint and Fair Grounds’ six-furlong Sugar Bowl Stakes.

Arabian Knight’s Southwest victory was all the more impressive because the Kentucky-bred Uncle Mo colt was returning from a layoff and had been shipped to Arkansas from California, plus he was racing around two turns for the first time and competing on a wet track for the first time. This was Arabian Knight’s first start since his dazzling 7 1/4-length win in his career debut as a 3-5 favorite vs. maidens in a seven-furlong race at Keeneland on Nov. 5.

After Arabian Knight recorded a 97 Beyer Speed Figure in his debut triumph, the $2.3 million auction purchase posted a 96 in the Southwest.

Coming down the lane in the Southwest, Arabian Knight looked to be making a paddling motion with his left foreleg. This brought to mind Vekoma, a noted “paddler” from a few years ago.

Daily Racing Form’s Jay Privman wrote this following Vekoma’s victory in the Grade II Blue Grass Stakes in 2019: Vekoma “has awkward action -- he paddles badly with his left front -- but he can run.”

Even with his paddling, Vekoma managed to win the Blue Grass by a decisive 3 1/2 lengths. Indeed, though Vekoma was a paddler, all he did was win six of eight lifetime starts and get a 110 Beyer Speed Figure when he won the Grade I Carter Handicap by 2 1/4 lengths on a sloppy track and a 104 Beyer when he won the Grade I Met Mile on dry land by 1 1/4 lengths.

In other words, being a paddler did not preclude Vekoma from running fast and winning at the Grade I level. That suggests one should not necessarily assume paddling would keep Arabian Knight from running fast and winning at the Grade I level. While there are those who did not particularly like what Arabian Knight was doing with his left front leg in the Southwest during the stretch run of the Southwest, it bears repeating that Baffert said that he saw the colt’s performance as being American Pharoah-like.

Baffert now has won the Southwest a record six times, including both divisions in 2012. Below are his Southwest winners:

2023 Arabian Knight (97 Beyer Speed Figure)
2022 Newgrange (89)
2013 Super Ninety Nine (102)
2012 Castaway (92)*
2012 Secret Circle (102)*
2010 Conveyance (97)

*Run in divisions

How many of Baffert’s Southwest winners prior to this year went on to win the Kentucky Derby? The answer is none. Nevertheless, Arabian Knight remains in the top spot on my Top 10.

Johnny V. now has won the Southwest three times. That puts him in a tie with Larry Snyder and Rafael Bejarano for most Southwest victories by a jockey.

Not only does Arabian Knight occupy the top spot on my Kentucky Derby Top 10 this week after taking care of business in the Southwest, the rankings are exactly the same as they were last week.

Daily Racing Form’s Brad Free has provided an update concerning No. 3 Cave Rock, who as of Feb. 1 had not had a published workout since finishing second as the 2-5 favorite in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 4. Prior to his BC Juvenile setback, Cave Rock had won three straight by margins of 5 1/4 lengths or more. Cave Rock captured both the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and Grade I American Pharoah Stakes last year for Baffert.

Baffert had said a while back that Oaklawn Park’s Grade II Rebel Stakes on Feb. 25 was the target for Cave Rock’s first 2023 race. But Free reported this week that “time may have run out” for the Kentucky-bred Arrogate colt to make his return in the Rebel, with Baffert acknowledging “it’s getting tight.”

Cave Rock has been galloping, according to Baffert, who added that “the rain set me back a little bit” with him.

My Kentucky Derby Top 10 for this week is below:

1. Arabian Knight
2. Forte
3. Cave Rock
4. Banishing
5. Cyclone Mischief
6. Instant Coffee
7. Giant Mischief
8. Arabian Lion
9. Verifying
10. Hejazi

HOLY BULL STAKES SELECTIONS

Eight are slated to clash in Gulfstream Park’s Grade III Holy Bull Stakes at 1 1/16 miles this Saturday (Feb. 4).

It appears to me that Cyclone Mischief is going to be extremely tough to beat. He comes off a sparkling 5 3/4-length win in a one-mile allowance/optional claiming affair at Gulfstream on Jan. 8, an effort that produced a 90 Beyer Speed Figure.

Dale Romans trains Cyclone Mischief, a Kentucky-bred Into Mischief colt.

“I think he’s one of the best 3-year-olds in the country, and he’s training like one,” Romans was quoted as saying of Cyclone Mischief on the Gulfstream Park website. “There are a lot of good horses out there, but we’re in a good spot right now.”

Cyclone Mischief has quite a Beyer advantage in the Holy Bull. The next-best figure to his 90 by a Holy Bull entrant is Rocket Can’s 82, which he registered the last time he raced at Churchill Downs on Nov. 26. Rocket Can lost by a half-length when finishing second beneath the Twin Spires that day in a 1 1/16-mile allowance/optional claiming contest.

Other than Cyclone Mischief and Rocket Can, no one in the Holy Bull has recorded a Beyer Speed Figure higher than a 75.

Hall of Famer Bill Mott trains Rocket Can.

Mott also will be represented in the Holy Bull by Shadow Dragon, who hasn’t competed since finishing sixth in the Sleepy Hollow Stakes for New York-breds at Aqueduct on Oct. 30. In his only other start, Shadow Dragon came from far back to win a six-furlong maiden special weight race for New York-breds by three-quarters of a length on Sept. 29.

Lord Miles came on in the lane to finish third in Gulfstream Park’s one-mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes on New Year’s Day. He had raced once prior to that, winning a six-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream by 5 3/4 lengths.

A bullet five-furlong workout in :59.60 at Palm Meadows last Friday (Jan. 27) could be a hint that Lord Miles is going prove a tough customer in the Holy Bull while racing with blinkers for the first time. Also, it’s a plus for Lord Miles that his Holy Bull pilot will be four-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

Legacy Isle has finished first in each of his three lifetime starts. However, he was disqualified and placed second for causing interference in the Mucho Macho Man.

Below are my selections for the Holy Bull Stakes:

1. Cyclone Michief
2. Lord Miles
3. Rocket Can
4. Legacy Isle

ROBERT B. LEWIS STAKES SELECTIONS

The record for most Santa Anita’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes victories by a trainer is held by Baffert. He’s won it 10 times (General Challenge in 1999, Domestic Dispute in 2003, Pioneerof the Nile in 2009, Flashback in 2013, Dortmund in 2015, Mor Spirit in 2016, Mucho Gusto in 2019, Thousand Words in 2020, Medina Spirit in 2021 and Messier in 2022).

Baffert is a cinch to get his 11th Lewis win this Saturday (Feb. 4). Only four are entered in the Grade III, 1 1/16-mile race. Baffert trains all four.

Has one trainer ever had every single horse entered in a race? Perhaps it’s happened sometime in the past, but I’m not aware of it.

I do know of one instance when a major race in the United States did have just one trainer in it.

Bud Delp trained the only horse who started in the Grade I Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park in 1980. That was Spectacular Bid’s historic walkover.

“There hadn’t been a ‘walkover’ in a major stake in the U.S. since Coaltown’s bloodless triumph in the Edward Burke Handicap at Havre de Grace on April 23, 1949,” Joe Hirsch wrote in the American Racing Manual.

However, unlike Baffert training all of the entrants in this year’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes, Spectacular Bid was not the only horse who had been entered in the $217,500 Woodward of 1980. Dr. Patches, Temperence Hill and Winter’s Tale also were entered, but all three scratched, thus creating the walkover. All Spectacular Bid had to do in order to collect $73,300 was to “walk” the 1 1/4-mile distance of the race.

“Normally, the winner’s share of the $217,500 purse would be $130,500,” Hirsch wrote, noting that New York Racing Association rules called for only 50% of the winner’s share to be paid in a walkover, with “the remainder reverting to the racing association.”

While the 1980 Woodward was a walkover, Spectacular Bid did a lot more than merely walk. It was decided that “the Bid” would have what essentially was a 1 1/4-mile public workout between the seventh and eighth races on the Belmont Park card.

All by himself and always in hand, Spectacular Bid covered the 1 1/4 miles in a 2:02 2/5, excellent time under the circumstances. Jockey Bill Shoemaker was in the saddle. Spectacular Bid’s final quarter-mile was clocked in :24 1/5.

Shoemaker rode a plethora of all-time greats besides Spectacular Bid, such as Kelso, Dr. Fager, Swaps, Forego, Buckpasser, Damascus, Round Table and John Henry.

After Shoemaker had become a trainer following his phenomenal career as a jockey, he once told me, without equivocation, that Spectacular Bid was the best horse that he ever rode. I asked Shoemaker why that was so.

“Because he had the most gears of all the horses I ever rode,” Shoemaker said.

Getting back to this Saturday’s Robert A. Baffert Stakes, officially known as the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, I’m going with Arabian Lion on top.

Arabian Lion kicked off his racing career with a front-running three-length win in a six-furlong maiden special weight race last Oct. 9 at Santa Anita (92 Beyer Speed Figure). In his next start, he recorded a 93 Beyer when second to Giant Mischief in a seven-furlong allowance/optional claiming race on Nov. 4 at Keeneland. In that Nov. 4 race, though Arabian Light did not win, he finished a whopping 17 1/2 lengths in front of third-place Old Alliance.

Most recently, Arabian Lion laid an egg as the 2-5 favorite in the Grade II Los Alamitos Futurity at 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 17. He finished fifth, 12 lengths behind the victorious Practical Move.

Baffert recently told me that I can go ahead and draw a line through Arabian Lion’s loss at Los Al. Baffert didn’t say why, but Arabian Lion’s five-furlong bullet drill in :58.80 at Santa Anita last Sunday would seem to suggest that the Kentucky-bred Justify colt might well rebound and win the Lewis.

Keep in mind that Arabian Lion will be racing with blinkers again in the Lewis. He’s one for one with blinkers, zero for two without.

Newgate goes into the Lewis off a good try when the runner-up in Santa Anita’s Grade III Sham Stakes at one mile on Jan. 8. He lost by a neck to the Baffert-trained Reincarnate.

Worchester should not be taken lightly in the Lewis even though he’s a maiden. He received an 85 Beyer Speed Figure when fourth in a six-furlong maiden special weight sprint at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. Worchester then improved dramatically to a 94 Beyer when second to $3.55 million Hejazi in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race on a wet track rated as good Jan. 15 at Santa Anita.

Hard to Figure is making his first start since he ran fifth in Del Mar’s Grade III Bob Hope Stakes on Nov. 20 (Newgate finished second). He won the Capote Stakes at Los Alamitos in September.

Below are my selections for the Robert B. Lewis Stakes:

1. Arabian Lion
2. Newgate
3. Worcester
4. Hard to Figure

WITHERS STAKES SELECTIONS

A half-dozen 3-year-olds are entered in Aqueduct’s Grade III Withers Stakes at 1 1/8 miles this Saturday (Feb. 4).

I will be surprised if the winner isn’t either Arctic Arrogance or Hit Show.

Arctic Arrogance ran second in Aqueduct’s Jerome Stakes at one mile on a wet track listed as good Jan. 7. The New York-bred Frosted colt also was the runner-up in the Grade II Remsen Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on a sloppy track Dec. 3 at the Big A for trainer Linda Rice. Arctic Arrogance will be racing with blinkers for the first time in the Withers.

Hit Show was scratched from last Saturday’s Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park (probably a good move in light of Arabian Knight’s winning performance) to go instead in the Withers for trainer Brad Cox.

A Kentucky-bred Candy Ride colt, Hit Show has won two of three career starts. He’s coming off a 3 1/2-length win in a one-mile allowance/optional claiming race on Dec. 17 at Oaklawn.

Below are my selections for the Withers Stakes:

1. Arctic Arrogance
2. Hit Show
3. Ninetyprcentmaddie
4. General Banker

The Jury: Bets and fades for Feb. 4
TwinSpires Staff

A lot of graded stakes are on tap Saturday at Gulfstream, Santa Anita, and Tampa Bay Downs, but the TwinSpires Jury has characteristically cast a wide net in search of their best plays of the weekend.
What is your best bet?

James Scully: #9 Patrolman (5-1) in Saturday’s third race at Oaklawn Park. The four-year-old colt showed improved speed stretching out in his second start last time, and Patrolman looks poised to receive a favorable trip on the front end in a field lacking speed. Rafael Bejarano picks up the mount on the son of Empire Maker, and John Ortiz’s barn may be warming up, sending out a nice winner Sunday. I’ll tab Patrolman for a frontrunning win.

Vance Hanson: #8 Heavenly Sunday (5-1) offers value in the Sweetest Chant (G3) for three-year-old turf fillies at Gulfstream Park. The Brad Cox-trained daughter of Candy Ride is undefeated from two starts and both were achieved comfortably, beginning with a seven-length maiden score at Horseshoe Indianapolis last September. In an allowance at Keeneland in late October, Heavenly Sunday waited patiently for room in upper stretch and, when it appeared, she kicked away from the field to win by 2 3/4 lengths while signaling her stakes potential. With limited grass offerings at her Fair Grounds base, it's encouraging to see connections shipping and taking a shot against a group which doesn't appear that much faster on paper and against whom she can be competitive with mild progression.

Ashley Anderson: #7 Lovely Ride (3-1) can upset slight morning line favorite #1 A Mo Reay, a Brad Cox pupil coming off a three-length win in the $100,000 Pago Hop S., when the two face off in the Bayakoa S. (G3) at Oaklawn on Saturday. Back-to-back winner of the one-mile Mistletoe and 1 1/16-mile Pippin at Oaklawn, Lovely Ride will go for her third straight win here and re-opposes a number of rivals from the Pippin, which she wired in 1:44.04. Trainer Robertino Diodoro is an impressive 23-for-80 at Oaklawn this meet and strikes at a 27% clip with horses that won their last race. Jockey Cristian Torres will stay in the saddle and has won 32% of his last 53 races paired with Diodoro.

Who is the horse to fade?

JS: Cyclone Mischief (2-1) promises to be bet down in the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull (G3) following a sharp entry-level allowance win at Gulfstream, netting a 99 Brisnet Speed rating for the 5 3/4-length win, but it came at a one-turn mile. His slowest races have come at two turns, generating only a 77 figure in a Keeneland maiden win and finishing seventh in a low-rated Kentucky Jockey Club (G2). I will try to beat the favorite on the stretch back out to two turns.

VH: #6 Super Chow (6-5) has been virtually invincible in sprint stakes the past several months, but I'll take a stand against him in the Swale (G3) at Gulfstream. Although clearly fastest on the figures, this will mark the colt's first try at seven furlongs, which could prove troublesome if any sort of serious pressure is applied to him early, in particular from Two of a Kind, who is likely to strip fitter after getting left behind by Super Chow last time following an extended layoff. General Jim is the most likely beneficiary if both come back to the field.

AA: #3 Late September (2-1) in the LA Bred Premier Prince S., part of Louisiana Premier Night, was listed as the morning line favorite in the one-mile event but has yet to stretch out beyond seven furlongs, a distance from which he won by a length over today’s race rival King’s Lute. The Munnings colt has since raced in a trio of sprints between 5 1/2 and six furlongs, winning the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile S. two back at Fair Grounds, before finishing 11 lengths in fourth in the Sugar Bowl S. at the same track. Late September’s recent Late Pace Speed figures give cause for concern in his first try at a mile, and with his morning line price, I will look elsewhere. I’ll instead back #7 Marks Promise (4-1), who is undefeated in two starts, winning 5 1/2- and six-furlong sprints by a combined 12 3/4 lengths at Delta Downs. Trainer Karl Broberg (21% winner this meet) is an 18% winner with horses making their first start at a route, while regular rider C.J. McMahon wins at a 19% rate at route distances and is 5-for-17 paired with Broberg over the last 14 days.

What else is worth noting?

JS: Following a spectacular Keeneland allowance win, Le Da Vida (7-2) has been favored in both stakes appearances at Oaklawn. She didn’t fire over a sloppy track in the Mistletoe S., but ran better finishing third in the Pippin S. last out. And the Ignacio Correas-trained mare may receive a more favorable setup in Saturday’s Bayakoa (G3). Lovely Ride, who led wire-to-wire in the Mistletoe and Pippin, is eligible to face more pressure, and I give the edge to Le Da Vida.

VH: Although greatly disappointed when he went to the sidelines after an eye-catching win in the Henry Clark S. at Laurel last April, I'm excited for the return to action of #10 Chez Pierre (3-1) in the Tampa Bay (G3) on Saturday. The undefeated French-bred gelding looked a potential star taking the Henry Clark by 5 1/2 lengths in his stakes debut, and probably would have landed a Grade 2 on Preakness Day if he had not been removed from consideration. Chez Pierre took his U.S. debut over the Tampa turf last March and I'm expecting trainer Arnaud Delacour to have him in solid shape despite the long spell.

AA: Todd Pletcher three-year-olds Tapit Trice and Shesterkin — both on the radar for the 2023 Kentucky Derby (G1) — will race in a first-level allowance at Gulfstream on Saturday. Tapit Trice, who graduated in his second career race in a one-mile maiden special weight at Aqueduct, will make his third start here and will get the services of hot jockey Luis Saez. The Tapit colt closed at 45-1 odds in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. His stablemate did not draw the same support in the pool, closing at 103-1 odds, but Shesterkin was named the 8-5 morning line favorite here. The son of Violence won by 2 1/4 lengths in his only career start, a seven-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream. Irad Ortiz Jr. will stick with the dark bay in his first try at a route distance, and Shesterkin will break from the outside, from post 7, while Tapit Trice drew the rail and is listed at 9-5 on the morning line. Both will be competitive but if you're looking for value, #3 Classic Car Wash (7-2) is intriguing for trainer Mark Casse. The three-year-old gelding romped to an 8 1/2-length win in a seven-furlong maiden optional claimer in December at this track, then stretched out to a mile and 70 yards on Gulfstream’s Tapeta to score a 2 1/2-length tally in an allowance on Jan. 6. The Birdstone grandson moves up in class here and posted a pair of bullet, four-furlong workouts in January, suggesting he's sharp and ready.

Coast to Coast Pick 5: Key Horses for Saturday, February 4, 2023

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. We had a few shorter prices come thru Pegasus Day, but the Ductor gave up on Art Collector long ago

The Saturday cards are starting to get filled with stakes races and the Ductor is percolating. Let’s whack them this weekend. and buy the paintings back. Skip.
Gulfstream Park Race 10: 7 Furlongs. F.G3 Forward Gal Stakes

#3 Automatically (3/1) – The Ductor is leaning towards singling this filly in the 1st leg. She ran well enough in the Breeders’ Cup with a bad trip to show she has a class edge over this group. She thrashed #6 Lynx (6/1) two starts back, who the Ductor puts 2nd here. Pletcher is 24% off the layoff this year and the Ductor will trust him.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. We had a few shorter prices come thru Pegasus Day, but the Ductor gave up on Art Collector long ago (Gulfstream Park: Pegasus World Cup Day Key Horses | The Pony Conductor (https://ponyconductor.com/pegasus-world-cup-2023/))

The Saturday cards are starting to get filled with stakes races and the Ductor is percolating. Let’s whack them this weekend. and buy the paintings back. Skip.

Others to be scared of: #7 Undervalued Asset (7/2), #8 Red Carpet Ready (4/1)
Santa Anita Park Race 4: 1 Mile. (Turf) F.G3 Megahertz Stakes

#8 Oakhurst (8/1) – This filly showed potential in the Chad Brown barn early in her career and ran her best career race last time. She was wide going into the first turn and showed a nice turn of foot closing into a slow pace. Now she cuts back to a mile and gets a rider upgrade to Prat. There will be a hot pace in this race and she will be flying late.

Others to be Scared of: #2 Hamwood Flier (5/1), #3 Nadette (5/1), #6 School Dance (3/1)
Gulfstream Park Race 11: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) F.S.G3 Sweetest Chant Stakes

Others to be Scared of: #8 Heavenly Sunday (5/1)
Gulfstream Park Race 12: 1 1/16 Mile. G3 Holy Bull Stakes

#4 Cyclone Mischief (2/1) – This colt took a giant step forward last time and if he runs the same race he’ll win easy. The Ductor is a little weary that effort was his first time with Lasix and now he’s back to all natural. Unfortunately, the Ductor doesn’t like any prices in this race. The alternative is #6 Legacy Isle (7/2). He set a blistering pace last time and did well to cross the wire first even though he was tired. He should get a more favorable trip here, alone on the lead.
Santa Anita Park Race 10: 1 Mile. (Turf) G3 Thunder Road Stakes

#7 There Goes Harvard (8/1) – This horse was impressive last year before something went wrong at Del Mar and has been on the bench since. All three of his turf races were good and he was able to win a Grade 1 on dirt, which isn’t his preferred surface based on his breeding. He’s working his eyeballs out and the Ductor likes that they’re putting him back on the turf. The barn isn’t messing around returning him to stakes company and calling Johnny V to ride.

#9 Hit The Road (5/1) – He’s the class of the field and hopefully his dull effort last time helps his price. That race was clearly a prep for this spot. They take the blinkers off and return him to his best distance today. If he can get a good trip from the outside draw, he’s dangerous
Others to be Scared of: #2 Du Jour (15/1), #4 Bob and Jackie (15/1), #10 Dark Shift (8/1), #12 Cabo Spirit (6/1)

Pick 3 for Gulfstream Feb. 4, including Forward Gal Stakes
Ashley Anderson

Gulfstream Park will offer a 12-race card on Saturday packed with five graded stakes, including the Forward Gal S. (G3), which will award qualifying points toward the Kentucky Oaks (G1) to the top five finishers on a 20-8-6-4-2 scale.

Below we provide spot plays and a Pick 3 for the aforementioned stakes along with the Kitten’s Joy S. (G3) and Sweetest Chant S. (G3).
Race 9: Kitten’s Joy S. (G3), 1 1/16 miles on turf, three-year-olds

#4 Major Dude (5-2) failed as the even-money favorite to #1 Candidate in the one-mile Dania Beach S. last out at Gulfstream on Jan. 7, finishing 1 3/4 lengths in second after a belated rally. The Todd Pletcher pupil will re-oppose his conqueror here in his second start off a layoff and should improve with the stretch-out to 1 1/16 miles, a distance over which he won the Pilgrim S. (G2) three back at Aqueduct. The Bolt d’Oro son will keep regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr., a 26% winner this meet, and posted a sharp, four-furlong workout ahead of this Grade 3 test. Pletcher is a 25% winner at Gulfstream and strikes at a 23% rate with horses making their second start off a break.

Race 10: Forward Gal S. (G3), 7 furlongs, three-year-old fillies

The Kentucky Oaks prep drew 10 fillies, including Smart Halo S. hero Twice as Sweet, and Gulfstream stakes winners Atomically and Lynx. But I like Fern Creek S. champ #8 Red Carpet Ready (4-1), who is undefeated in two career starts while running six and 6 1/2 furlongs. On debut, the Kitten’s Joy granddaughter beat the field by 10 lengths in a $120,000 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs while recording a 91 Brisnet Speed rating, then returned to win by 3 1/4 lengths in her first stakes appearance, finishing with a 92 Brisnet speed figure. The filly will also get a rider switch to Luis Saez, a 22% winner at Gulfstream and a 21% winner with sprints.

Another intriguing runner in the field is debut winner #7 Undervalued Asset (7-2), a Chad Brown filly who dominated by 8 1/4 lengths in an $85,000 maiden special weight at Aqueduct on Nov. 10. The Speightstown three-year-old has a chance if she can break well from post 7 and get out front early to set the pace. She’ll keep rider Irad Ortiz Jr., while Brown is a 25% winner with horses coming off layoffs of 46-90 days and a 22% winner in graded stakes.

We'll try to beat morning line favorite #3 Atomically (3-1) in our Pick 3 and play Red Carpet Ready, Undervalued Asset, and #6 Lynx (6-1), who posted a 47-second, four-furlong work on Jan. 29 and is eligible to improve in her second start off a break.
Race 11: Sweetest Chant S. (G3), 1 1/16 miles on turf, three-year-old fillies

From a Brisnet Prime Power perspective, #7 Cairo Consort (2-1) ranks first, 13 points higher than the next-best runner, #1 Sweetlou’sgotaces (4-1). The Cairo Prince filly won the one-mile Ginger Brew S. last out by a half-length over Stephanie’s Charm, who re-opposes here, while making her first start for Todd Pletcher. She faced much tougher while under the guidance of Nathan Squires, placing second by a length in the one-mile Natalma (G1) and third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) as a 19-1 longshot at the end of last year. Pletcher is a 24% winner with horses that won their last race as well as those making their second start off a layoff. Irad Ortiz Jr. will stay in the saddle and is 16-6-2-2 paired with Pletcher over the last 14 days.

Handicapper's Corner: 2023 Holy Bull Stakes (G3)
Will Speed Rule the Holy Bull Stakes?
By: John Caro, ThoroFan Handicapper

The Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) is the first in a series of prep races at Gulfstream leading to the Florida Derby and the 2023 Kentucky Derby. There are points involved and competition will be quite keen.

There are some speed balls entered and as we know from past races at Gulfstream it is a speed favoring track. The one factor that might play a card this time is the weather. Although it's been super here for the week, a frontal passage Friday might bless us with some rain. Which may play a factor in the outcome.

Looking back at some races, two stuck out. 2020, Tiz The Law who jumped to the front, got passed, shuffled back and re- rallied to take the race. Was he really a front runner? Maybe, but he was able to track wisely in traffic and catch them on the later part of the turn.

2019, was all about the speed duel between the Ortiz brothers and they out did themselves. Harvey Wallbanger shot to the rail and slipped through with a thunderous roar to take the money at 25-1.

There is no question in this race we have speed on top of speed. Which presents a question. Do ya play for the speed of the speed, a tracking sort or the one who can track a pace and close?

I like the track and close idea. Not a horse that comes from way off the pace but sets up mid to early and can make a move to the lead in a situation where the wire is early for the mile and a sixteenth. Only two horses have proven at the distance.

#4 Cyclone Mischief (2-1) – Romans/Gaffalione and #8 Rocket Can (7-2) – Mott/Alvarado. Both have gone the distance twice and won once, both are from their great dad, Into Mischief, both rate close to the par speed but only Rocket Can has run in the slop at 96 and closed at 108. I think Rocket Can is more tactical could side in the cat bird seat and make the right move at the right time.

There is no doubt that #6 Legacy Isle (7-2) – Crichton/Saez is the early speed of the speed with Cyclone Mischief right behind and Rocket Can can choose to track.

There is a probability #5 Mr Bob might try to press the pace with the leaders. Both the #1 and 2 trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr. and riden by Irad Ortiz and Edgard Zayas might be involved late. #1 was third in the Mucho Macho Man against Cyclone Mischief.

The #3 Shadow Dragon (15-1) – Mott/Ortiz, JL – won his maiden as is consistent with animals coming from Army Mule and Mott must have seen something that needed adjustment since he hasn't been seen for three months to enter here. Caution!!!: Mott brings horses off a long rest with exceptional results…e.g. Art Collector, and I expect we'll see something from this lad.

As I said earlier, I like a horse that can be tactical, with speed who can close. The weather being a factor I put Rocket Can on top today.

How to bet With, and Against, Major Dude in the Kitten's Joy Stakes
John Mucciolo

A total of eight three-year-olds will travel 1 1/16 miles on the Gulfstream Park lawn in Saturday’s $175,000 Kitten’s Joy S. (G3). #4 Major Dude (5-2), one of two in the cast for conditioner Todd Pletcher, has been installed as the morning-line choice in the competitive tilt. The Grade 2 victor has shown nice improvement since moving to the green for his fourth career start and looms large with his top effort.

Major Dude handled a yielding turf course with ease at Aqueduct in October while making his initial try on the sod, powering home a one-length winner over a solid field. By Bolt d’Oro, the $550,000 yearling purchase capped his juvenile campaign with a ninth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Keeneland.

The Spendthrift colorbearer commenced 2023 with a rallying and clear runner-up result in the Dania Beach S. on the surface and shows two solid morning drills since in advance of his second try off the layoff. Kentucky-bred colt possesses good tactical speed and will be in range at the top of the stretch with regular pilot Irad Ortiz Jr. in the silks.

#5 Lights on Broadway (5-1) gave a fine account of himself in his first turf try when second-best in the recent Pulpit S. One of two in the field for Mark Casse, the $250,000 son of City of Light owns a stakes win on the all-weather here and brings fine form to the field with a trio of successive top-two finishes overall. The bay colt earned a hefty Brisnet Late Pace number in his lone run on the turf to date, and he will be dangerous in the lane with even minor improvement beneath Jose Morelos.

#1 Candidate (3-1) has rolled to three wins from three turf tries to date and will be the one to catch from the rail. Trained by Arnaud Delacour, the Exaggerator chestnut was never challenged in the Dania Beach while making his local bow and rates an obvious chance with even minor improvement. Tyler Gaffalione will be in the stirrups.

Graham Motion’s #2 Souzak (8-1) figures to move forward in his second run since his importation from France. The $392,000 Arqana Arc Sale purchase didn’t have a smooth voyage in the Dania Beach most recently, but the Kodiac colt displayed a lot of ability as a juvenile and could surprise at a nice number. Joel Rosario retains the mount.

2023 Holy Bull Stakes Cheatsheet
By TwinSpires Editorial Team, Sponsored Content
February 3, 2023

By Vance Hanson (TwinSpires)

1. LORD MILES (4-1) – A convincing debut winner over six, he took a step forward in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man S. though ultimately ran out of real estate when faced with a five-length deficit in the final furlong; a son of Curlin, he should appreciate the stretch out to two turns; the downside is that neither race was particularly fast, the Mucho Macho Man especially being one of the slower renewals on the clock; might not see another sprint-like pace here either.

2. WEST COAST COWBOY (12-1) – Gutted out a debut win in the slop going a mile back in September, but was outpaced two months later when facing returning rival Legacy Isle; it’s been another two-plus month layoff for the Joseph trainee, who needs to take it up a notch against that rival plus several others that have run faster to this point.

3. SHADOW DRAGON (15-1) – Mott coming in hot off an upset win in last week’s Pegasus World Cup (G1), but this colt is the lesser on paper of the barn’s two entrants; miraculously made up a 14-length deficit to win his debut in a photo, but that was against New York-breds; his follow-up, in a state-bred stakes won by eventual open stakes-placed Arctic Arrogance, was rather discouraging; connections apparently think there is more here than meets the eye, but taking a wait-and-see approach.

4. CYCLONE MISCHIEF (2-1) – Couldn’t fend off dual Derby prep winner Instant Coffee in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) two back, but took a step forward in his local debut, winning a one-mile allowance for fun and posting a strong 99 Brisnet speed rating; a proven winner around two turns, he looms the one to beat here if he can avoid any severe regression off the career best.

5. MR BOB (10-1) – Maiden claiming grad was stakes-placed in the 6 1/2-furlong Ed Brown at Churchill Downs two back, though that race wasn’t an especially deep cast; a troubled start compromised his chances in the Mucho Macho Man, and he’s proven more effective rating much closer to the leaders; we might see more from him early with blinkers added and a more ideal beginning, though class concerns remain.

6. LEGACY ISLE (7-2) – Has crossed the wire first in all three outings, though demoted to second for drifting late in the Mucho Macho Man; as noted above, it was not one of the stellar renewals of the race from a time perspective, and now the son of Shackleford must stretch his speed a bit farther here while facing a couple rivals with winning experience routing; needs to quicken.

7. IL MIRACOLO (20-1) – Although Remsen (G2) run probably not indicative of his true merit around two turns, he’s been no match for Legacy Isle in either of their prior meetings; the one victory was achieved in wire-to-wire fashion, and perhaps the returning Reyes will be more aggressive with him as he was in that Nov. 12 maiden; overall, others look more appealing.

8. ROCKET CAN (7-2) – After two nondescript outings sprinting at Saratoga, he made noticeable progress back in Kentucky when stretched out around two turns; close second in an allowance last time is one of the stronger efforts turned in by a member of the field, though the winning Confidence Game subsequently finished a well-beaten third in the Lecomte (G3) at Fair Grounds; the stronger of the two Motts and a likely contender given the relative modesty of opposition.

Noel’s Weekend Winners: Targeting Great Betting Races at Gulfstream
by Noel Michaels

Gulfstream Park won’t have too many dull Saturday cards from here on out at its premier Championship winter race meet, and this Saturday is a prime example with an exceptional 12-race program on tap that is loaded with five Grade 3 stakes races.
weekend Television schedule

Friday, Feb. 3: 3-6 p.m. on FS2; post time varies on FanDuel TV

Saturday, Feb. 4: 3-6:30 p.m. on FS2; 4-6 p.m. on CNBC; post time varies on FanDuel TV

Sunday, Feb. 5: 3-4 p.m. on FS2; 4-6 p.m. on FS1; post time varies on FanDuel TV

The feature race and the race many people are anxious to see this weekend is the $250,000 Holy Bull Stakes on Gulfstream’s road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, but that race certainly isn’t the only game in town. The four undercard stakes are also important events and the best of them, the Forward Gal Stakes and the Sweetest Chant Stakes, are perhaps the most bettable races of the day. Let’s focus on these two races and try to make it a winning Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Gulfstream Park, Race 10, $125,000 Forward Gal Stakes, post 4:17 p.m. ET

The Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes for 3-year-old fillies going seven furlongs on the main track marks the return to action of #3 Atomically, who finished seventh last time out in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in her first start since going to the barn of trainer Todd Pletcher. Before that, Atomically had distinguished herself right here at Gulfstream Park where she reeled off back-to-back monster wins last fall, including a 6 3/4-length victory in the $400,000 My Dear Girl division of the Florida Sire Stakes, in which she ran faster than the corresponding stakes for 2-year-old males. Atomically is already a winner at this seven-furlong distance, and she is versatile from a pace perspective as a horse that can lead all the way or rate just off the pace if called for. That leaves the question of who is going to run second and third? The Chad Brown-trained #7 Undervalued Asset was certainly no secret in her first and only outing to date, in which she was sent off as the odds-on favorite and won off impressively by 8

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (February 4)

Saturday’s racing is at Seoul where there are 12 races from 10:40 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Three-year-old maidens in the opener with five of the eleven racing for the first time. The favourite is the only one who has raced twice already. (3) RICH GATE was 5th on debut over 1000M in October before improving to 2nd when stepped up to 1200M at start number two on December 11th. From a good draw he can be on pace here and it should third time lucky. The most convincing dangers also have prior experience. (11) S.I. COCO overcame the same widest draw as today to go down a narrow 2nd on debut over 1000M on Christmas Day. It was a slowly run race, but he was doing his best work late and the step up in trip can suit. (8) SMARTY FIGHTER went through a plethora of trials before running 5th on debut at this distance, also on Christmas Day, and should benefit from the experience. Of the debut-makers (2) HEUIMANGUI CHANGA and (10) CHEONJI SKY look the most likely to make an immediate impact.
Selections (3) Rich Gate (11) S.I. Coco (8) Smarty Fighter (2) Heuimangui Changa

Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies here with three of the eleven racing for the first time. (4) ANYANG POKKYEOKGI is set to be hot favourite, based on her latest two which both ended in 3rd place, most recently over this distance on Christmas Day when overcoming the widest gate to lead. From a much better draw, she should get a more comfortable run today and may take some beating. Clear second favourite is (5) LADY TAEPUNG. She sat handy on debut over this distance on January 7th, finishing 3rd in a slowly run race and with some natural improvement, she can get closer today. (9) FALL IN LOVE looks the pick of the first timers. She went through two trials, improving significantly in the 2nd when 3rd across the line in a fair time having sat midfield and run on. The distance should suit first up, and a bold showing is possible. (2) MUNHAK CENTRAL and (11) BARAMUI HYANGGI others in the frame.
Selections (4) Anyang Pokkyeokgi (5) Lady Taepung (9) Fall In Love (2) Munhak Central

Three-year-old maidens. (8) SAENAE KHAN comes in with a 2nd and two 4th places from three outings to date, most recently as beaten favourite over this distance on January 7th. He led that day on what was his first stretch out at further than 1000M and he can go all the way this time. That will mean overturning the form on (10) BULUI NALGAE, who has really mixed his performances across four starts so far, two good and two poor. He was 3rd in the January 7th race having sat right back and then made ground late on passing tired horses. He shapes as the danger here along with (5) GEOSEN CHAMP who like Saenae Khan, has run 4th in both his latest two. He posted a good time over 1200M two starts back and can settle back and run on here. The form drops off a bit after those three but (1) LEGEND K and (9) BLACK GUN have hinted at ability and can be place chances.
Selections (8) Saenae Khan (10) Bului Nalgae (5) Geosen Champ (1) Legend K

Seoul Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

A regular but very tricky maiden. There’s no clear favourite so we’ll take a chance on (2) TES MARY who has raced just twice, improving to 2nd on January 8th over 1200M when drawn wide and settling right back and running on. She draws much better here and should be running on strong again. (8) TWO ACE is yet to score in sixteen but has been ultra-consistent of late with a 2nd and two 4th place finished from his latest three. An apprentice keeps the weight light here and today could be his day. (11) JEONGWOO FOREVER is, like Tes Mary, another who can still have improvement in him. He has raced just three times and has finished no worse than 5th. He has finished off his races well and the step up in trip can be to his benefit. (1) BARAMSAL and the returning (3) ARCH SIN, who was on pace when requalifying in a trial a month ago, are among others who can place.
Selections (2) Tes Mary (8) Two Ace (11) Jeongwoo Forever (1) Baramsal

Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(3) SUPER FINISH has finished no worse than 5th in four starts so far but remains a maiden. He is up in class here having got his second runner-up finish over this distance on Christmas Eve. He comes down slightly in the weights, draws very nicely and in a race that isn’t much stronger than he would have faced at class 6, he is the one to beat. It’s a very similar story with (6) GEUMSEONG SIDAE. He’s never finished any worse than 4th and comes up in class following back-to-back runner-up finishes, both times when on pace and most recently over this distance on January 8th. He comes down 2kg in the weights and has solid claims here. (9) HIT POWER was a winner on debut over 1000M being finishing down the field in the Listed Munhwa Ilbo Trophy. Though he could only mange 8th on his most recent outing at this distance on Christmas Eve, the time was good, and he beat a couple of today’s rivals. He should be much closer in this company. (4) COWBOY TANGO and (2) BIG SMART, the latter needing to be forgiven his latest effort, the logical other money chances.

Fillies and mares only here. (9) GEUMA ALLURE is yet to win in seven outings but has only missed out on the top four on one occasion. She comes in following her best finish to date when 2nd over this distance at this class on January 8th and despite coming up 2.5kg in the weights, she should be on pace and going one better here. She will be a hot favourite but (11) TAURUS QUEEN isn’t without a chance either. She comes up in class having won at the third time of asking on Christmas Day when settling midfield and running on over 1200M. The step up in trip can suit and the wide draw shouldn’t be problematic. (4) SINUI BANJEON can have a line drawn through his latest. She is yet to win but has a runner-up finish at this class over 1300M to her name two starts back and on that form is right in this. (1) ARGO GONGJU and (5) SUNNY BLADE among others who can enter the calculations.

(4) SOMETHING LOST is yet to lose having won both starts to date in fine front-running stye. That brings him up to class 4 in double-quick time. He comes up in trip too but neither should be an issue and under a light weight and from a good gate, he can continue on his merry way here. (7) RAON THE PEARL was a very smart winner at this class over 1200M two starts back when settling back and running on in a very fast time. She stepped up to this trip last time out and ran homes a solid 3rd place carrying the same weight as today. Expect her to be running on again here. (11) TES GO DAEBO returns to action after eleven months out. He won his two starts prior to the layoff and looked well when trialling in early January. He will obviously need this but don’t rule out. (10) IMUGI and (2) SINHAN TEUKSONG others in at least the placing frame.

Seoul Race 8: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

It’s been a while between drinks but (1) THE QUEEN JUSTICE will be expected to return to winning ways here. She has been getting closer across recent start with runner-up finishes in her latest two, both at this class and distance. She does come up 3kg in the weights, but she draws well, and today’s company is not intimidating. Jo In-kwon can pick his spot and she should be too strong late on. (6) MEDICI WOLF is at the other end of the experience scale, having only raced three times. She did run 3rd in the Gwacheon Mayor’s Trophy last November though and placed in her other two starts as well. She comes up in trip here but looks to have plenty of scope for development, and she can go close. (5) BYEOLBIT BOSEOK hinted at a return to form when 4th at class and distance in December. That was his third start this preparation, he has had a further nine weeks off since and under a light weight looks nicely in here. (2) ARFONS and (8) OKRYONG among others in the placing frame.

(1) K N TIZWON beat three of these on his way to 3rd place at class and distance on January 8th, settling back in midfield and working home well. He comes in under the same weight and from a better gate, he looks to be the one to beat. (8) MORNING PRINCE comes up in class and significantly in distance following his maiden win at start number five over 1300M on December 17th. He has proved versatile in his running style and there’ s no reason this can’t suit. (6) JEONGMUN CHOEGANG has come back into form over his last couple of starts with a 3rd and a 2nd, both over 1400M. Back in the dim and distant past, he recorded his solitary win over this distance and while he is up in weight, he can’t be ruled out here. (11) NEOREUL EUNGWONHAE and (4) BLOW MIND among others who can challenge for the minors.

Seoul Race 10: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

(8) DOUBLE EDGE overcame severe interference on the home turn to win at class and distance in November but than ran 2nd in a similar race on December 18th when favourite. He drew the widest gate that day so may have an easier time of it here and he can return to winning ways. That would mean overturning the form on (7) WONPYEONG COD, the winner of that December 18th race when he settled back and ran on well for his second consecutive score. He comes up 3kg in the weights to Double Edge’s 1kg raise but a repeat win shouldn’t be ruled out. (10) WONDERFUL DEVIL is another who comes in looking for a hat-trick of victories. Her latest was at this class and distance on January 8th when settling last before finishing very strongly. She is up in the weights but remains in the hunt. (9) CHOEGO BLACK is up in class following a win over 1700M at class 4 level a month ago. That took him to three wins from seven and he can measure up in this company. (1) TOP SEED another to keep safe in a competitive race.

(3) VICEROY won a valuable Trophy race on international weekend last September and then had over three months off before returning on Christmas Eve to beat plenty of today’s rivals in a fast win at this class and distance. He comes up 3kg in the weights but that’s balanced a little by a better draw and he is the one they’ll need to beat. (8) MUNHAK FIRE got the closest on Christmas Eve, running home 2nd having gone right back. He was one of the longest shots on the board that day but should be kept safe this time. (6) HEUNG DREAM overcame gate elven in that race to run on for 3rd. He draws much better here and looks a place chance again. Competitive race to close out the card. (3) CHOEGANG QUEEN comes in off a good class and distance 2nd on December 11th when she was handy throughout and ran on well. She has won at this distance and from a good draw can sit on or just behind the speed again and give herself every chance. (5) CHAMJOEUN CHINGU returns to action for the first time since last season’s Triple Tiara in which she finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the three legs. She trialled up back in November looking well and at her top form has claims here. (7) POWER BOX ran 4th behind Choegang Queen in that December 11th race. He has run very consistent times at the distance and he should be in the finish here. (12) CHUNJI GWANGPUNG was 2nd in a very fast race at class and distance two starts back before running 3rd over 1700M on Christmas Eve. With an apprentice engaged he comes significantly down in the weights and that can balance the wide draw. (8) ROYAL ELVIS one of the others in the frame.

2023 Holy Bull Stakes Preview & FREE Picks | Cyclone Mischief Steps Back Up To Kentucky Derby Prep
By: Curtis "Magic" Kalleward
Aaron previews the 2023 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) from Gulfstream Park, then gives his top picks & long shots from this Kentucky Derby (G1) prep race. Impressive recent allowance winner Cyclone Mischief steps back up to the Derby trail and will face off against Legacy Isle, who was disqualified from winning the 2023 Mucho Macho Man Stakes last time out. Tell us YOUR thoughts in the Comments section!

The track press release:

Trainer Dale Romans won’t be lacking in confidence when he saddles Cyclone Mischief for a start in Saturday’s $250,000 Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

“I think he’s one of the best 3-year-olds in the country, and he’s training like one,” Romans said. “There are a lot of good horses out there, but we’re in a good spot right now.”

The Holy Bull, a 1 1/16-mile stakes on the road to the Triple Crown, will headline a program with five graded stakes for 3-year-olds.

Albaugh Family Stable LLC and Castleton Lyons’ Cyclone Mischief is coming off an eye-catching Jan. 8 optional claiming allowance victory at Gulfstream. The son of Into Mischief, who was purchased for $450,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September sale, saved ground while stalking the early pace before making a three-wide sweep to take the lead on the turn into the homestretch and drawing off to win by 5

The NCAAB Comp play at 4 eastern is on LSU plus the 12-13 points. We will play against Alabama here as they fit a nasty system that plays against Road favorites off a home game where they scored 100 or more and won the prior meeting in the series at home if they have a win percentage of .750 or higher and are taking on a winning team at home off a road loss. LSU is struggling and has lost 9 straight but should keep this much closer than the first meeting. Look for them to cover here. RV

NBA | Suns vs Pistons

Play on: Suns -180 at linepros

1* FREE PLAY Suns MONEYLINE.
I'll suggest bypassing the spread option, and instead to lay the price on the visiting side on the moneyline instead. Detroit is off a satisfying 118-112 SU/ATS home win over Charlotte just last night and I expect a predictable letdown here. The Suns have now quietly won three of their last four, including a 106-94 victory at Boston as ten-point dogs last night. With Devin Booker returning to the Suns line-up, expect Phoenix to keep the foot on the gas here!

NBA | Heat vs Bucks

Play on: UNDER 223 -110

Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Heat/Bucks UNDER 223
The Miami Heat are a dead nuts UNDER team right now. They have gone UNDER the total in six of their last seven games and we have seen 215 or fewer combined points in six of those contests. I think this trend continues against the Milwaukee Bucks, who are coming off a 106-105 win over the Clippers for just 211 combined points.
Familiarity favors defense and low scoring games. This will be the 3rd meeting between the Bucks and Heat in just over three weeks. They combined for 210 points in their first meeting on January 12th, and came back for just 206 combined points in their second meeting on January 14th.
Miami is 9-1 UNDER following three consecutive road games this season. Milwaukee is 8-1 UNDER following four or more consecutive wins this season. The Heat are 18-9 UNDER vs. a team with a winning record this season. Bet the UNDER in this game Saturday.

NBA | Mavs vs Warriors

Play on: Warriors -10 -110 at Caesars

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Golden State Warriors -10
The Golden State Warriors will have Steph Curry tonight and are much healthier than the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks will be without their two best players in Doncic and Wood tonight and could be without both Dinwiddie and Bertans. Don't be surprise if they basically just punt this game against the Warriors. Golden State is 19-6 SU & 16-9 ATS at home this season. Dallas is just 9-16 SU & 8-17 ATS on the road. The Mavericks are 0-9 ATS in their last nine games following a divisional home win. Dallas is 16-33-2 ATS in its last 51 games overall. Golden State is 4-1 ATS in its last five home meetings with the Mavericks. Give me the Warriors.
