Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Friday, February 10
Posted on February 9, 2023 by David Aragona

RACE 5: MOVIE MOXY (#4)

Melting Snow (#1) figures to go favored as she seeks her fourth victory in a row, this time off the claim for trainer Charlton Baker. The barn has had recent success with this move, but I think this mare’s form is a little dressed up. She was beating much weaker fields for cheap claiming prices in December and January, and then last time was arguably a little disappointing despite getting the job done as the 4-5 favorite. She does look like the controlling speed from the inside, but this is a significant step up in class and I think she’s going to be overbet. Her obvious rivals appear to be Mia Bea Star (#3) and My Sweet Wife (#7). The former doesn’t win very often, but she typically shows up with a good effort and has been in solid form for Randi Persaud. My Sweet Wife hasn’t run as fast as those two, but she had been in solid form for Michelle Nevin. Yet, like the favorite, I thought she took advantage of some vulnerable fields and it’s not a guarantee that she’ll be as effective for a new barn. My top pick is Movie Moxy (#4). Her recent speed figures aren’t on par with the favorites, but there are reasons to suggest that she’s capable of turning things around here. Her last effort isn’t nearly as bad as it seems, since she threw her head at the start and left the gate lengths behind the field. She actually ran on pretty well for second considering that poor beginning, and almost surely would have won with a clean break. She was competing against weaker that day, but she’s now been claimed by Linda Rice, who confidently moves her up in class. Rice is 15 for 35 (43%, $2.49 ROI) first off the claim with horses going from sprints to routes on dirt at Aqueduct over 5 years. The barn has also been sending out nothing but live runners lately, and the price figures to be fair.

RACE 6: BIG ENGINE (#3)

I am a little concerned that scratches could alter the complexion of this race. Morning line favorite Sheriff Bianco (#4)doesn’t seem like a guarantee to participate as he wheels back in just 5 days, and it seems unlikely that David Jacobson would run both horses that he’s entered since they possess the same front-running style. Sheriff Bianco is the one to beat if he runs, since he’s been in excellent form for Linda Rice ever since switching back to dirt. Though he was beaten as the favorite here last Sunday, he actually ran one of his better races in defeat, and the cutback shouldn’t bother him. His main rival appears to be Nova Rags (#8), who will attempt to break through this level for the fifth time in a row. Recently he’s settled for second, but he’s been beaten by good horses in each of those last two starts. He will also benefit from any pace that develops up front, and it seems likely the early tempo will be fast if the race holds together. A quick pace would also benefit Linda Rice’s other entrant Big Engine (#3). He finished 6 lengths behind Nova Rags when they met here in December, but he just got too far back in the early stages. He was also trained by Rudy Rodriguez then during a time when the barn was in a slump. Now he’s been claimed by Linda Rice, who is 19 for 47 (40%, $2.81 ROI) first off the claim at Aqueduct over the past 5 months. She has had success with this horse before, and he’s run speed figures in the past for Rice that would make him very competitive against this field. As long as the race isn’t torn apart by scratches, he’s supposed to get the right setup and should be a square price.

RACE 8: BOLD JOURNEY (#7)

You have to admire a horse like Warriors Revenge (#4), who has won 8 of his last 9 starts. He proved that he’s no Finger Lakes wonder when transferring that form to Aqueduct last time. Perhaps he didn’t care for the sealed track when he initially came to this circuit two back, but he looked like a different horse last time, finishing powerfully after stalking the pace. He was flattered when runner-up Writer’s Regret came back to win last weekend with an 114 TimeformUS Speed Figure. He now moves up in class, but he fits well on speed figures and has the versatility to sit off the early leaders. Furthermore, Mark Hennig is 15 for 62 (24%, $3.00 ROI) with Windylea Farm horses at Aqueduct over 5 years. The one concern for him is that there is plenty of speed signed. Among the other pace players, More Graytful (#3) seems most intriguing. He would be tough for this field to handle if able to run back to the 114 TimeformUS Speed Figure he earned at this level over a year ago on New Year’s Day 2022. He was in great form for the Rob Atras barn back then, and he’s since gone the wrong way after a couple of claims. Yet it’s fair to say that he was overmatched at the open N2X level when he tried it twice for Michelle Giangiulio last year. He’s obviously had some issues, but is dropping to a realistic level and figures to be a fair price. My top pick is Bold Journey (#7). Some could argue that he’s been a bit of a disappointment overall, given the way he started his career last winter. However, it does feel like he’s starting to turn things around lately. He beat a weak field when he broke through the N1X condition back in November. Yet he was a commanding winner that day, and he’s actually stepped up his game since moving to this tougher level. He was simply beaten by some tough rivals in those last two starts, but did run on well after a poor start last time. He probably isn’t meeting as tough a field here, and it appears that Eric Cancel is a good fit for him with so much pace signed on.

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

Gulfstream Park February 10, 2023

Race 6: Maiden Optional Claiming

#3 Bunker Hill gets back to the turf for this race, which is his best surface. He also should enjoy the cut back in distance today. #1 Jerrys Turn should improve in his second straight start over the turf today. He was a decent fifth last time out against this class group.

Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming
freestar

#2 Davids Rose has been close at this level in two straight starts over this surface. Today, she should be able to get up and get the job done. #1 Golden Isle runs first off the claim for a solid trainer, which should help her chances. It is a good sign that they are moving her up in class.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#3 Hot Blooded came within a half-length of winning over this track last time out in a stakes race. He should be competitive in this similar spot as well. #1 Grays Fable gets major class relief in this spot after taking on stakes horse in his last several races. He should enjoy this class level.

Race 9: Maiden Optional Claiming

#8 Imposter Syndrome runs first off the claim for Mike Maker, while also moving over to the synthetic surface today, which should help his chances. #7 Mr. American has been close over this surface and at this level in back to back races. He will be competitive again today.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (February 10)

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday where there are 9 races from 11:00 to 18:00:

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Debut-maker (6) BLACK MAMBA trialled very nicely, settling off the pace and then running on strongly to cross the line in front in a good time on a very wet track without being asked for very much. First up at 1300M should suit, and if he brings that form to the races, he has every chance. (12) UNJU OREUM was much improved when stepped up to 1200M for start number two on January 13th, settling midfield, then dropping further back before running on well for 2nd. She was a long way behind a good winner but the additional half furlong can be to her benefit and the wide draw shouldn’t matter. (1) DALLILLAEYO has been knocking at the door in his latest couple with a 3rd place at 1200M followed by a 4th when tried at a mile. He draws nicely on the inside today and should be a threat. (4) HAERANG THE ONE and (3) FLYING AARON among others with placing chances.
Selections (6) Black Mamba (12) Unju Oreum (1) Dallillaeyo (4) Haerang The One
Next Best 3, 2
Fast Start 2, 9, 10, 11

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies. (7) GOLDEN WAVE will be a warm favourite, having run on an pace 2nd on debut over 1200M on January 6th, well beaten by a good winner but having had to overcome gate eleven. She had previously shown well in a trial and with some natural improvement from her debut, may take some beating here. (10) U PING is done no favours by the draw but should have enough speed about her to get a forward position. She has been on pace in both her 2nd and 3rd place from her two starts to date and shapes as the main danger to the favourite here. (11) AQUA MAGIC ran 4th behind Golden Wave in that January 6th race, having sat handy throughout. She is another not favoured by the draw but can go close. (6) HAPPY TAEYANG and (1) UNMATCHED are potential improvers.
Selections (7) Golden Wave (10) U Ping (11) Aqua Magic (6) Happy Taeyang
Next Best 1, 3
Fast Start 6, 7, 10, 11

Standard maiden here and while (6) WIDAEHAN SEONTAEK remains scoreless from eleven starts, he come sin off his best finish to date when 2nd over 1200M on December 18th when settling midfield and running on. The engagement of a 4kg claiming apprentice means he carries even less weight this time, and today could well be his day. (12) PLAY THE INDY also has a runner-up finish to his name, achieved two starts back over this distance. He weakened having led over 1300M at his latest outing last month but while he does draw wide, can be given another chance here. (1) DOCTOR SHARK is yet to be in the top two but has finished between 3rd and 5th in no fewer than six of her seven starts to date. She comes back in trip today and should be close once more. (10) WONDERFUL APPEAL and (4) TWOTWO FLYING among others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (6) Widaehan Seontaek (12) Play The Indy (1) Doctor Shark (10) Wonderful Appeal
Next Best 4, 5
Fast Start 2, 4, 7, 12

Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(1) SPECIAL ROAD is yet to finish any worse than 3rd from three outings to date and got her win at class 6 level two starts back when making all over this distance in an all-filly maiden in a good time. She then ran a front running 3rd when stepped up to 1300M for her first try at this class, again in filly company. She draws a great gate, carries a light weight and has every chance of leading all the way again. (7) BUDDY BUDDY made all on his second start to win over 1000M before finishing 5th of eight in the Gimhae Mayor’s Trophy for juveniles. He weakened late over 1400M on his most recent start n January 6th but should find this more suitable. (2) BEOLGYOUI KKUM is another all the way winner, his coming at start number two over this distance. He then led on his first try at this class over 1400M just two weeks ago, ultimately finishing in 4th place and is another who may appreciate the step back in trip. (5) DIABLO QUEEN and (8) PHANTOM ACE – the latter up in class here but one of few fancies who should be happy to take a sit and avoid a speed duel – others to consider.
Selections (1) Special Road (7) Buddy Buddy (2) Beolgyoui Kkum (5) Diablo Queen
Next Best 8, 3
Fast Start 1, 2, 5, 7

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies and mares only here and this lot really know how to mix their form so we need to catch one on a good day. That could be (12) SKY JEJUHYANG who seems to alternate good performances with poor ones. Her latest fell into the latter category but if we go on her showing two starts back when runner-up at class and distance then she has to be in with a chance. She does carry more weight than that day and has drawn wide but against this modest opposition, has as good a chance as any. (4) QUEEN OF SPIRIT is another who needs a line drawn through her latest effort but before that ran 4th and 2nd at 1300M and 1400M, both at this class. She tends to get a bit far back but similar runs to those two put her in with a winning chance here. (3) A. ONCE came out of gate ten and from off the pace to run 4th at class and distance on January 27th. She comes out of a better gate here and under a light weight, can be in the hunt. (1) KF OGONG and (5) TITAN K others who can place on their day.
Selections (12) Sky Jejuhyang (4) Queen Of Spirit (3) A. Once (1) KF Ogong
Next Best 5, 8

(6) FINAL SEVEN comes in off his first disappointing outing to date when working hard to lead from a wide draw before weakening in the home straight over a mile on January 15th. At his prior start he ran a close 2nd in a decent time at this class and distance when on pace and back down in trip today and from a better draw, he should get a softer run and can win. Also drawn better today is (5) HWANGU FIGHTER. Not that gate eleven troubled him on January 6th when he got to a handy position and then ran on to win. He comes up in class here but is down in the weights and should measure up. One at odds could be (12) BUILD UP. He overcame the same wide draw to run 5th, beating a few of these in a quick race on a wet track on January 13th and under the same weight today, going even better isn’t impossible at what will surely be an each-way price. (8) GREAT ONE and (1) TEUKGEUP CAMP are others who come in off positive latest outings and can enter the calculations.
Selections (6) Final Seven (5) Hwangu Fighter (12) Build Up (8) Great One
Next Best 1, 3
Fast Start 5, 6, 10, 12

Busan Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(1) COLORFUL WIND’s recent form reads well and she beat a few of these on her way to 3rd place at class and distance on January 15th when settling right back and running on. With an apprentice engaged today she comes down in the weights, draws better, and could come out of top. (3) K.AI was a somewhat disappointing also-ran when well supported in that same race having been slower away than usual and never a factor. If he gets a better start here – and he should – we should see a different side to him today. (2) GOOD SOCKS is far better than her latest two efforts suggest. She has had three months off since her latest so comes in fresh this time and from a good draw can get on or close to the speed and just like K.Ai, we could be seeing a better version of her here. (7) ILNYEOM CHEONHA was one of those beaten by Colorful Wind last time out but has placed at class and distance and can be competitive here. (8) GOLDEN another in the hunt.
Selections (1) Colorful Wind (3) K. Ai (2) Good Socks (7) Ilnyeom Cheonha
Next Best 8, 6
Fast Start 2, 3, 7, 9

Busan Race 8: Class 2 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

This is the kind of race that may suit (6) POKPUNG EONDEOK. He doesn’t win out of turn but has seventeen top-five finishes from twenty-four starts and comes in off a really good 3rd place from a wide gate over 2000M on January 27th. He likes to settle back and run on and under a light weight again, he can go close. (11) WARRIOR CLASS comes up in class following a win over this distance in a super time on an admittedly wet track on January 15th when settling just behind the speed and proving too strong. That time was faster than anything here has managed for the distance and while the track was very fast that day, he comes down a full 5kg in the weights and a repeat can’t be ruled out. Also up in class is (8) STAR EYE. His class 3 win also came at this distance on January 6th when settling midfield and running on. He too comes down significantly in the weights and can measure up. (9) SKY MORE and (5) SO MUCH GO the other logical chances.
Selections (6) Pokpung Eondeok (11) Warrior Class (8) Star Eye (9) Sky More
Next Best 5, 2
Fast Start 4, 9, 10, 11

Busan Race 9: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(2) FASHION BLADE looks the one to beat here. She comes in off a good 3rd over 1200M at this class on December 23rd when beating a few of today’s rivals when settling midfield and running on well. She draws well again and third-up this preparation, she may well be peaking fitness-wise. (7) WONDERFUL FAGER returns to action after six months out. He has placed at class and distance and while he will need to be taken somewhat on trust, he trialled up promisingly in early January and can put in a bold showing first-up. (6) KING BROTHER had a poor day at the office over 1800M a month ago. He has run well at this distance though and while he is running out of class here, this shy at the class 3 stumps means he comes down a full 7kg in weight on his last outing. It’s not impossible. (12) ROAD TO V and (11) WORLD CHANGE among others in the placing frame.
Selections (2) Fashion Blade (7) Wonderful Fager (6) King Brother (12) Road To V

Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (3) Sing Scat (B) was boxed in and steadied last time and still finished third. Can atone for that setback here. (6) Breaking Bullet has a nice turn of speed and looks like the main foe. (4) Ancient Relic had a tough trip and deserves a second chance. (2) Morgan’s Bluff could be a contender off the Hess claim. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-6. Doubles: 2-3-4-6 with 1-4-5-6.
2nd race – (1) Oopsie Doopsie (C) was bet all the way down from 7-1 to 7-2 then flashed early speed before finishing a distant second. May hang on today. (5) Out for Myself was second last time and could improve off the D’Angelo claim. (6) Lady Petal drops in class and is worth a look. (4) Krabi is an interesting first time starter. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-6.
4th race – (3) Dither drops into a claimer for the first time and merits top billing. (8) Lieutenant Stan should find the going much easier in a claimer. (5) Retired seems ready for a good effort in his debut. (2) O Gangster was hurt by a wide trip but should save some ground here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-8.
6th race – (7) Testa tired late after a year-long layoff. Should benefit from that effort and hang on here. (5) Covert Kat had some traffic issues last time but should bounce back here. (9) Papa Jojo was third at this level last time and cannot be ignored. (6) Sedona Red could move forward off his second start. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-6-7-9.
9th race – (8) Imposter Syndrome was claimed by Maker and should respond to a switch to Tapeta. (5) Sir Goosa closed fast for third and figures to be a main threat. (7) Mr. American was second in three of last four starts and belongs in the exotics. (2) First Place G might perk up on Tapeta. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-7-8.

3rd race [OC 80k/N3X, 7F] – (2) Piece of My Heart has six top three finishes in a row for Linda Rice including a second in the Interborough three weeks ago. She is entered for the $80,000 claiming option having won at this condition two races back. (5) Mosienko returns from a December layoff after winning four races in a row at Saratoga and Aqueduct and then running third at this N3X level. (3) Self Isolation won three races in a row and then was overmatched in a pair of Aqueduct stakes races. She drops back to this level at which she is a contender. (1) Secret Love does her best running at the Big A where she has a record of 10: 3-2-1.
4th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (5) Limani (D) was bet down from 7-1 to 9-2 in her second start for Chad Brown back in April and moves from turf to dirt. The Brown barn is winning at a 50% clip at this winter meeting with 13 out of 16 in the money. (1) Laochi was claimed from her recent second-place finish for $40,000 by Linda Rice which came after a five month layoff which justifies the step up in class. (8) [B][U]Bavarian Cr

RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Atomic Drop; 2-Mobou
Backups/savers: 6-Tom’s X S

Forecast: With the rails out at 30 feet, inside draws are preferred in this one mile turf affair for first-level allowance Cal-bred older horses, especially in a field without much early speed. Atomic Drop is unproven on grass (three starts, one second place finish), but given the projected pace flow the Phil D’Amato-trained gelding should have every chance to inherit the role as the controlling speed and take it from there. A two-turn state-bred winner on dirt at Del Mar two races back, the son of Mucho Macho Man exits a much stronger (and productive) race and will be hard to catch if he is allowed to bowl along on the front end, his preferred running style. Mobou, away since October, likely will draft into a comfortable stalking position and be the one to fear most. A prior winner over this course and distance, the son of Uncle Mo shows a healthy, steady series of workouts that should have him plenty fit, though it must be noted that he does not have a history of firing his best shot fresh, so a lack of recency could make him vulnerable. Though he is considerably slower on speed figures than the two main contenders, Tom’s X S has plenty of room to improve and could be capable of producing a significant forward move in his third career starts. Back on grass following a maiden state-bred dirt sprint win last month, the James Cassidy-trained gelding has the pedigree to stretch out successfully so we’ll consider the Tom’s Tribute gelding as a “must use,” at least as a backup or a saver.

RACE 2: Post: 12:59 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Loana; 2-Filthy Fast
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Loana gets blinkers and Lasix for her sophomore debut and in a race begging to be won by an off-the-pace type the Craig Dollase-trained filly seems the obvious top pick. Her two sprint races last summer weren’t bad at all (she was six lengths clear of the rest when second at Los Alamitos two runs back), so if she returns as well as she left the daughter of Neolithic can produce the last run with a patient ride she appears to be prefer. Her recent work tab is brief but good, and the barn has solid stats with layoff runners, so we’ll assume that she’s fit and ready. Filthy Fast displayed good speed in her debut last month before being overrun in the stretch and winding up a distant second, but with that race behind her the Luis Mendez-trained sophomore has a right to be fitter and stronger today. She gets a break in the weights and shows three solid drills since raced, but today’s extra half furlong probably won’t do her any favors. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with Loana receiving preference on top.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 3: Post: 1:33 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Lasmuigh; 2-Habeas
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: We’ll double the race in this below average maiden claiming turf sprint for 3-year-olds while conceding that neither of the two main contenders can be deemed trustworthy. Best advice is to tread lightly. Lasmuigh didn’t show much of anything in his U.S. debut when facing infinitely stronger straight maiden foes over this course and distance in late December, but based on his Irish form, the Phil D’Amato-trained gelding should find this assignment well within his range. He gets top billing by default. Habeas brought $450,000 at last year’s OBS April Sale but after just two starts is being culled by the barn, not an encouraging sign. However, he’s a fit on numbers and adds blinkers, so the son of Tonalist must be considered a major player.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 4: Post: 2:03 PT Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-A Broken Breeze; 3-Sacred Beauty
Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Three of six entrants in this $12,500 claiming main track miler for fillies and mares exit the same race last month won by A Broken Breeze, who can score right back if she can turn in two alike. While consistency has never been her strong suit, the veteran mare apparently really prefers the Santa Anita main track, so let’s hope she can continue her good form with another off-the-pace score. Sacred Beauty, second without mishap as the favorite in that same race, always has preferred to run second or third (nine times) rather than win (twice), so but it wouldn’t take much to turn the tables on ‘Breeze. In a race that probably should be left alone, we’ll include both in our rolling exotic play while otherwise sitting it out.

__________________________________________________ ___________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 5: Post: 2:34 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Seismic Spirit; 8-Terrier
Backups/savers: 7-Raji

Forecast: This is a split of the third race, a high-priced ($62,500) maiden claiming turf dash for sophomores that is fraught with danger. Anything can happen. Seismic Spirit finished an okay second in a moderate straight maiden grass sprint at Aqueduct last fall and today surfaces in a seller for the first time after being considered good enough by original trainer Wesley Ward to run in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. He gets blinkers and Lasix while attracting top jockey Juan Hernandez, so we’ll put him on top but certainly not single him. Terrier is a first time starter from the Tim Yakteen barn with Flavian Prat taking the colt, so the son of Into Mischief went through the ring as a yearling for $260,000 and apparently already has been given up on by his connections even before his first outing. A gate recent gate work (4f, :47.4hg, fourth fastest of 74) looks okay on paper, so in an unclassified affair he has to be tossed in. Raji was well beaten vs. straight maidens in both of his two prior starts but actually earned okay speed figures despite never offering a threat. The drop in class and the switch to grass provides hope that improvement is possible.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 6: Post: 3:05 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Fireman Dan; 2-Kant Beat the Rock; 3-Mitico
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: The inside three runners appear to be the main contenders in this restricted (nw-2) $16,000 claiming sprint for older horses. The problem is that none of the three appear to own a desire to win (they’re all one-for-something), so here’s another in the rolling exotic sequence that requires a spread. Fireman Dan, in the frame in his last pair but just 1-for-17 overall, is the one to beat based on his sharp runner-up effort at this level over this track and distance last month in which third place finisher Nolo Contesto came back to win easily. A repeat of that performance would be good enough. Kant Beat the Rock lack gate speed but has numbers that fit and takes a significant class drop to his lowest level effort, while Mitico has enough early speed to possibly shake loose early and become the controlling speed.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 7: Post: 3:36 PT Grade: A-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Maglev
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Maglev has much in is favor in this downhill turf sprint for second level allowance older horses. The Irish-bred gelding was a respectable second in a stronger-than-par race over this course and distance behind Motorious in his first outing in almost a year and seems likely to produce a forward move with that tightener under his belt. He shows the same pattern that produced a smart win in the Baffle Stakes last year, so despite his lack of tactical speed we’re expecting the Mark Glatt-trained gelding to be along in plenty of time. At 6/5 on the morning line, he’s a short price rolling exotic single.

__________________________________________________ _____________________________
__________________________________________________ _____________________________

RACE 8: Post: 4:07 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Sheza Girly Girl; 1-Glorious Spring
Backups/savers: 8-Unwritten Code

Forecast: This competitive extended main track sprint for first-level allowance/optional claiming fillies and mares requires a spread in rolling exotic play. Sheza Girly Girl returns to her ($20,000) claim level after a couple of below standard runs when facing tougher foes in stakes and allowance company over the all-weather at Golden Gate Fields and seems quite capable of regaining her winning from against this group. A prior winner over the Santa Anita main track, the veteran daughter of Richard’s Kid has the proper style for this extended sprint trip (she’s a perfect 1-for-1 at six and one-half furlongs) and with some help up front should make her presence felt in the closing stages. Glorious Spring is a tad slower on speed figures that what she needs to be to win, but she’s lightly raced with further improvement likely, makes a positive jockey switch to Frankie, and could be dangerous if the pace up front is fast enough. Unwritten Code has reeled off three consecutive wins and once again will be the one to catch from her cozy outside post position. Her most recent score was accomplished on turf but she’s a two-time winner over the local main track and will take them as far as she can. This distance, though, might be a bit problematic for her.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 9: Post: 4:38 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Mamba Cool ; 3-Foothill
Backups/savers: 7-Give Me the Lute

Forecast: The finale is a grass grab bag for state-bred allowance/optional claiming Cal-bred older horses that offers several possibilities. Let’s zero in on the closing types due to the presence of early speed among several contenders that should guarantee legitimate early fractions. Mambo Cool has been freshened since September but has won off a layoff in the past, goes for a barn that has excellent stats with comebackers, and shows a solid series of workouts at Los Alamitos that should have him fit enough to fire a big shot off the bench. In the frame of four of five outings over the Santa Anita turf course (including a win), the son of Unusual Heat lands the favorable rail, and with good racing luck could produce a dangerous late kick under regular pilot Umberto Rispoli. At 5-1 on the morning line, he warrants a play. Foothill may have been a short horse off a year layoff when a close third in a starter allowance affair last month and is likely to be fitter and tougher today. He picks up Frankie and will benefit from a patient ride that he is sure to receive. Give Me the Lute plummets in class (he’s entered for $20,000) and is winless in seven prior starts over the local lawn. He’s stretching out again and is certain to employ gate-to-wire tactics, and in doing will compromise the other pace types. We’ll use him as a backup or a saver but nothing more.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis-$25,000 Guaranteed Pool February 10, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo begins the weekend with a 10-race card. The popular 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

4-Alwaysalittlemore(4-1)-Plano sat in the pocket last week and raced hard to the wire but was no match for HF Flower. Should be battling the 2 below and for those not wanting to single #7 this mare should be on the ticket.
5-Jessie Girl (8-1)-Comes out of the same race as the one above but was far back early. Did rally but needed to go 3-wide versus a well-meant winner and the trip took its toll. Paced the back half in 57.1 and the shorter field tonight should help.
7-Wonder Of Love (6/5)-On a form spree and was much the best as an odds on choice leaving from post 10 on Sunday. This 5-year-old is a perfect 4 for 4 in 2023 and has captured 7 of 9 lifetime wins in the past 2 years. This is the 2nd start for the Ellis barn and is back in for a $6,000 tag. Deserves respect but this field could be more of a challenge, using and looking to others who have some value.

Race 8

1-Lil Screamer (3-1)-Even effort in last, faces easier here and hoping won't be over bet. Gets Shawn Thayer between the pipes and he has been hot. The 2-5 start was on an off track, could be better on a dry surface with a new pilot.
3-Outlawburntpopcorn (6-1)-This veteran drops and gets a ++ driver change in James Kennedy as the trainer hands over the lines. This was Kennedy's choice over the 7/8 and should race near the top of the stack.
8-Brooklyn Wind Up (5/2)-The Kiel barn has won 25% of its starts over the past 30 days and Longo will do the steering. The post should help the price and could win from out here if dialed on high. Wasn't Kennedy's choice, he stayed loyal to Pacheco (3).

Race 9

2-Ivar (1-1)-Drew off by over 8 lengths versus this kind on 2-3 and will likely be 1/5 again. Short field won't hurt chances and the Ellis barn has had the magic touch. This will be the 2nd start off a claim and the last race was on an off track.
7-Ideal One A (4-1)-This 12-year-old probably has good enough speed to beat anyone in this field. But he does have some issues behind the gate and goes off-stride at times. Finished a beaten 2nd, 8 lengths behind Ivar last time but broke at the start. Svendsen steers again and if this veteran can have a clean trip he could make a race of it. Won in 153.4 at CalX last year.

Race 10

2-Cal's Hope (4-1)-This race is devoid of form but this 5-year-old gets a ++ driver change in Plano and that is enough to get a spot on this ticket. Doesn't like to pass horses down the lane so could be forwardly placed and look to shake loose late.
3-Bobleeswagger (3-1)-Makes the 2nd start for the Tremblay barn after breaking stride on Sunday. Svendsen is back steering again and gets post relief. Not liking a short price but should be a player against this crew.
6-Outlawgrandetorino (15-1)-Was far back early in a gapped out field and was caught 3-wide on the backside. Still kept coming in an ugly race. Will look for a better trip and finish at a price, in a battle of basement dwellers.

0.20 Pick 4

Laurel Park Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, Feb. 10 February 10, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
Laurel Park’s Late Pick 4 this Friday is sure to be a race to the wire – the first wire, that is, for three 7F sprints in the sequence. Bettors will have to navigate large fields in the one-turn sprints if they want to cash in on the 50-cent wager. Here’s a closer look at the action:

LRL 6th race (2:56 EST) -- Seven of the 10 entrants in this $5,000 claiming race at one mile are battle tested and six-figure earners. HOT N SPICY LOVE returns to his claim level after he followed the move of winning favorite Oxide (7-33, $213k) and finished third for an $8,000 tag. LET US MAKE GOLD was outrun by hard-hitting Kozy’s Wildcat (6-16, $159k) and others in a fast comeback race at Charles Town, but he earned the top three speed figures of his career when he won at 5-1 odds or higher in the fall. He is worth using at a price again in his second start ever around one turn.

LRL 7th race (3:27 EST) -- Good recent form abounds in this starter allowance, as evidenced by the field’s combined 22/6-4-4 record since December. ARISTOCRATIC has speed, a nose for the wire and a $500k bankroll thanks to a 49/10-12-11 main-track record, but the 9-year-old seeks his first win at 7F. TOP BOSS is versatile, in top form and won easily at the distance on short rest to start the year. ALPHA CHI RIO benefited from a lively pace when he rallied for second behind a sharp winner, but he could revert to front-end tactics that produced a 3-for-6 mark at Laurel Park. All that being said, hit the ‘ALL’ button for Pick 4 purposes.

LRL 8th race (3:58 EST) -- SKIPPER SUE exits a productive 5-1/2F allowance, will benefit from the added ground and will be closer to the pace if her two recent bullet workouts are an indicator. MAVILUS plays to a steady beat, just topped $200k in earnings and seeks her third win in a row at this distance.

LRL 9th race (4:29 EST) -- Both halves of the Hugh McMahon-trained entry pose a winning threat. BEST WORST IDEA gets Lasix off the claim and lost all chance with a stumbled start in a race that produced a maiden $30k winner and two runners-up. She met the likes of Tappin Josie (3-8, $123k) and stakes winner Titoschngedmyluck in her debut last year. DONNA’S COURAGE gets class relief after three in-the-money finishes in a row and has long sprint experience that most of her rivals don’t. ICESTORMING was a willing second to runaway odds-on winner Willful Desire at 6F with first-time Lasix.

Suggested 50-cent Ticket

LRL 7th race: ALL
LRL 8th race: 2, 7

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Fair Grounds - Race #3

Picks
Notes

#4 Where's the Pumps
She moved forward in a big way in her local debut when getting in for a tag, and I think she's in line for another great trip tracking the speed today. Probably tough right back in a realistic spot.

#1 What Can I Say
I'd want a better price than she offered last time out, but she might be enough of a late grinder to give her a chance to get past some of the pace players.

#3 Country Lady
She flattered the top choice when romping by better than 10 to graduate after chasing that one two starts back, and obviously something like her last would make her tough, but I think she might come back to earth today.

Race Summary
Where's the Pumps was ready for her local debut after the first run at Delta, and she looks like a good fit back with winners here with a great spying trip waiting for her.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

Picks
Notes

#1 Righteous Freedom
He has given way late in both lifetime starts, but he exits a good maiden race back in December and will probably try to hustle early for a bit of position from the inside. Might be a playable mid-range price.

#8 Ourperfectprince
Think he might be ready enough on the debut to outrun his odds, and he brings a big Louisiana pedigree with him to post. Get a look on the track, but he might be worth including.

#10 Spirit of Dreams
Debuter is another worth checking out on the tote and track in advance of this one, and he has turned in some snappy works along the way for a team that can get them ready to go.

Race Summary
Righteous Freedom might offer an okay price off the last run, but he wasn't totally embarrassed in that tough spot last time out and it would be interesting to see if he can manage to sit a pocket trip.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#4 Drewzano
He turned in a couple nice recent efforts and now goes for the new team with competitive form against this group. Think he lands a really good trip near the top in a race without a ton of confirmed early burn.

#1 Maintenance Matt
He was second to the top choice when they met two starts back and chased him again last out, so he has some tables to turn. That said, he might get a cozy finishing trip from the inside here.

#5 Just Blaze
He went to the bench in flat form last season and now returns to face the easiest group he has seen in some time. Wouldn't surprise.

Race Summary
Drewzano should be fast enough to up on the splits early on, and I'm not really sold on any of the others in here, so I'll take his solid recent form and edge in the race shape to give him a strong lean to end the day.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Golden Gate - Race #3

Picks
Notes

#6 NOSHEWONT (5-2)
Yes she can with better set-up and a move forward off latest try.

#1 SUE GENEROUS (3-1)
Took money on class drop at Santa Anita but was outrun at 6F.

#5 HALLELUJAH BABY (15-1)
Drops, stretches out, gets in light with blinkers added.

Race Summary
NOSHEWONT rallied into a soft pace to finish second with first-time Lasix off a six-week layoff. She has plenty of one-mile experience and should get a livelier pace to run at. Bet to win and place.

Golden Gate - Race #5

Picks
Notes

#4 PERFORMATIVE (3-1)
Hit board in both starts, the latest despite racing ‘greenly,’ adds Lasix.

#7 TIGER HEAT (6-1)
Debuts for Wong, shows series of gate works to get ready.

#1 LOOKSGOODONYOUTHO (2-1)
Set moderate pace, well clear, got caught by 2-1 first-time starter.

Race Summary
PERFORMATIVE ranged up on the dueling leaders after he broke in the air at the start, lost ground turning for home and surged too late to catch the favorite. If he minds his manners, he’s a good bet to break his maiden. Play a 4-ALL exacta.

Golden Gate - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#4 AWESOME MAUI GIRL (10-1)
Busy work tab shows some decent works; dam was $162k earner.

#5 SASSY TINKERBELL (6-1)
Last two sprint attempts were good, gets second-time Lasix.

#7 OTTER POP (9-5)
Three seconds in last five sprints, four as a short-priced favorite.

Race Summary
Treat this $12,500 maiden claiming race as a $25,000 sprint because the six 3yo fillies that have run are taking a class drop. That being said, take a price stab on first-time starter AWESOME MAUI GIRL, who shows a steady work tab dating back to November 22 and whose dam, Awesome Jill, was a debut winner at Churchill Downs and a stakes-placed earner of $162k. The low-profile barn makes her worth a win and place bet and part of a 4-5-7 exacta box.

# 2 BEAUDACIOUS 10/1

# 4 SO I'M TOLD 8/1

# 3 FOOTHILL 5/1

BEAUDACIOUS is my pick and is a respectable value bet given the line. Could provide positive dividends based on respectable recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 96. Earned a strong Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. Looks quite good for the conditions of this outing today, showing solid numbers in turf route races lately. SO I'M TOLD - Has solid early pace and ought to fare soundly versus this group. FOOTHILL - Could provide positive gains based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 94. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong speed figs (95 average) at today's distance and surface lately.

# 4 GOTTEMINABIND 7/2

# 3 MORO DANDY 5/2

# 1 CALIFORNIA CALI 5/1

I think GOTTEMINABIND is a decent choice. Will more than likely be one of the early speedsters of the bunch going into the midpoint of the contest. MORO DANDY - Her earnings per start in dirt sprint races alone makes you take a look at her. Sharp gains over time for this rider and trainer duo. CALIFORNIA CALI - Will probably go to the front end and could never look back. She has competitive class ratings, averaging 59, and has to be given a chance in this race.

#4 FULL DINNER JACKET (ML=9/2)
#1 EYES ON RED (ML=10/1)

FULL DINNER JACKET - This gelding is in fine physical condition. Finished second on Feb 3rd. That last race at 7 furlongs was too short. He'll love the added distance today. EYES ON RED - Pivaral was aboard this horse in the last race and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. This one could be a possible overlay in this event at morning line odds of 10/1. Finished fifth in last race at Sam Houston but was close at the wire.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 DEANOS CAPE (ML=5/2), #9 FRA MAURO (ML=7/2), #3 D TOWN BABY (ML=6/1),

DEANOS CAPE - Hasn't raced or had any drills since January 8th. Not much value on this favorite. FRA MAURO - You always figure that this animal has a shot to be victorious, but he falls short most of the time. This questionable contender ran a common speed figure in the last race. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely lose in today's race running that number. D TOWN BABY - Speed ratings of 82/70/62 are started the wrong way.

#1 SWEETONTHEGENTS (ML=5/1)
#5 JUSTKISSMYGRITS (ML=5/2)
#4 MS HEADLEY (ML=9/2)
#6 SCARLET TANAGER (ML=8/1)

SWEETONTHEGENTS - This horse absolutely loves this surface. All her wins have been here at Charles Town. Walters brings her right back. I advocate you stick with this strong mare. This mare has been claimed each of her last two starts. She figures to be tough in today's contest. Have to believe this speed horse has a nice chance on this bullring. A quick move out of the gate, and this one gets position. JUSTKISSMYGRITS - This jock and conditioner have a positive return on investment when they combine forces. Mare has shown some pace. This shorter trip should be better for her. MS HEADLEY - Aboard this entrant on January 18th and Baez is yet again in the irons this time. The ROI when Baez and Pickett get together is fantastic. Ran in the last race against a better group of horses at Charles Town. The move down the class ladder should suit her well. This mare's last speed fig is good enough to prove victorious here, I'll invest in her back again this time. Any early pace setter that is starting from the inside has a shot on this track. Should jump out of the gate and get good position versus this field. SCARLET TANAGER - This mare is in a good spot here. Is at the same distance she won at on November 23rd. Sub-par effort last race out at Charles Town was due to the off-going (she finished fourth). Should do much better in this race with the benefit of a fast track.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 TRUE HEIRESS (ML=5/1), #3 SALSA RITA (ML=6/1), #8 CHEESE LOUISE (ML=6/1),

TRUE HEIRESS - Difficult to keep following this kind of 'hanger' horse. This mare garnered a speed fig in her last event which probably isn't good enough in today's race. SALSA RITA - You believe this horse is going to be first just because she's always close. Just doesn't get the job done often. The third place finish in the last affair was not the best. CHEESE LOUISE - The Brain tells me to keep my distance from horses in sprint races that haven't finished in the money in short distance contests of late.

Dave's Friday Free Play:
1* on Philadelphia 76ers -6
The Key: The Philadelphia 76ers will be looking to avenge their 97-108 loss at New York on February 5th. They blew a 20-point lead in that game and now get a chance for quick revenge. They will be playing just their 2nd game in 5 days here. The 76ers have one of the best home-court advantages in the NBA at 20-8 SU & 18-10 ATS on the season. Philadelphia is 14-5 ATS when attempting to avenge a loss this season. Bets on home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points avenging a loss by 10 points or more when playing only their 2nd game in 5 days are 63-38 ATS over the last 5 years. The 76ers are 17-6 ATS in their last 23 home games. Take Philadelphia.

NBA | Spurs vs Pistons

Play on: Spurs +4 -110 at circa

Friday NBA Free play. My selection is on San Antonio plus the points over Detroit at 7:10 pm et on Friday.
I'm not sure the Pistons should be laying points against anyone right now - even the down-trodden Spurs. San Antonio checks in having lost 10 straight games following Wednesday's 14-point defeat in Toronto. At the very least, we've seen the Spurs attempt to slow their opponents down, holding three straight foes to fewer than 90 field goal attempts. Against an ultra-inefficient Pistons offense that has made good on 38 or fewer field goals in five of its last six games, there's reason for optimism for the Spurs here. Detroit has been akin to a swinging door defensively, allowing at least 40 made field goals in 15 of its last 17 contests. Of their last 17 opponents, 13 of them have shot 47% or better from the field. San Antonio took the first matchup between these two teams this season and that's notable as Detroit is a woeful 1-18 ATS when seeking revenge for a same-season loss against an opponent this season, outscored by an average margin of 15.0 points in that situation. Take San Antonio.

NBA | Jazz vs Raptors

Play on: Raptors -7 -110 at SC Consensus

Jack's Free Pick Friday: Toronto Raptors -7
I cashed the Raptors over the Spurs last time out and I'm back on them again tonight. They stood pat at the trade deadline and still like their team. They have won three in a row and have three more easy home games prior to the All-Star Break to improve their playoff positioning.
Look for another blowout home victory here over the Utah Jazz, who are struggling mightily heading into the break. The Jazz are 0-3 SU & 0-3 ATS in their last three games overall despite being home favored in all three games, losing by 25 as 5.5-point favorites to Minnesota, by 13 as 10-point favorites to Dallas and by 7 as 1-point favorites to Atlanta.
The Jazz didn't feel good about their chances of making the playoffs so they decided to trade away Mike Conley, Jared Vanderbilt, Malik Beasley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker prior to the deadline. Other than draft picks, the only key piece they got back in the trade was Russell Wilson, who is a cancer and nobody really wanted. These moves by management show the Jazz have intentions of tanking the rest of the way.
The Raptors are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games. Toronto is 17-5 ATS in its last 22 meetings with Utah, including 4-0 ATS in the last four home meetings. Bet the Raptors Friday.

Ricky's 1* play on DAY.
Key Angle: It's important to remember that Ricky never makes a bet on any game based on just one angle. In order to make the grade, all his premium picks must meet several important criteria. He doesn't share all his secrets within his analysis, instead he chooses to reveal only the angle that he feels is the most significant. Here in this game the history of these teams is quite significant.
Key Trends:
- The Flyers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games versus. a team with a winning % above .600.
- The Billikens are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
- The Billikens are 7-15 ATS in their last 22 road games versus. a team with a winning home record.
Verdict: The value is on the home favorite.
