Rocket Picks : Oaklawn Park, Gulfstream Park, and Santa Anita for February 12, 2023
By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s get another big Sunday of racing kicked off today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Santa Anita and Oaklawn Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s GO!

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

Gulfstream Park February 12, 2023

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#11 Saratoga Flash looks for two in a row today after a nice win over this track in his last start. However, he will be moving up in class. #7 Penner Ash moves to the barn of Mike Maker today after running well at this level last time out at Keeneland. He should run well once again today.

Race 9: Maiden Special Weight
freestar

#5 Seduction was a solid second on debut last time out for Pletcher and should move forward off of that race. She also should like the stretch out in distance. #9 Shade will debut for Pletcher in this spot, who has unleashed some nice young runners at this meet.

Race 10: Allowance Optional Claiming

#8 Breath Away goes for two in a row today after a solid debut win over this track in her last start. She on like a horse that has a solid future. #9 Scottish Symphony was a decent fourth last time out at this class level. She should improve in her second start over the turf.

Race 11: Claiming

#6 Stormy Soul has been consistent at this level and over this surface in his last several starts. He is the one they all have to catch today, while it is a good sign that Saez jumps aboard. #1 High Press gets class relief back down to the level where he should be competitive.

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Sunday, February 12
Posted on February 11, 2023 by David Aragona

RACE 2: CAUSE I’M ELEGANT (#6)

Likely favorite Two Redheads (#2) took some money in her first start against on dirt last time, which was also her first foray into NY-bred company. She didn’t break that sharply and had to be angled off the rail down the backstretch as she advanced while wide. She could never get to the winner, but did hold on gamely for second against a much better field. A repeat of that performance would make her awfully tough to beat as she drops in class. Linda Rice is 13 for 29 (45%, $1.91 ROI) with MSW to MCL dropdowns on dirt at Aqueduct over 5 years. I’m not against her, but she’s pretty obvious and figures to be an underlay. I could entertain experienced alternatives like Hypnocurrency (#4) and Bernt Again (#7). The former has some questions to answer going this distance, but she did run well when dropped in for a lower tag two back. Bernt Again nearly won at this level last time, but that was a slow race, and she may naturally be more of a turf horse. My top pick at a bigger price is Cause I’m Elegant (#6). This filly barely lifted a hoof on debut against tougher. Yet she fared better last time when dropped in for a tag. She still didn’t possess much early speed, but at least she was running on mildly in the late stages. She will have to do better again if she’s to be competitive here, but at least there’s an upward trajectory now. The stretch-out in distance figures to help, since Creative Cause is a 16% dirt route sire. She finished up like a horse who would want more ground, and David Donk is 5 for 26 (19%, $4.28 ROI) with maidens stretching out from sprints to routes on dirt at Aqueduct over 5 years.

RACE 6: B C GLORY DAYS (#2)

The Linda Rice entry figures to take plenty of money in this conditioned claimer, with Bourbon’s Hope (#1A) looking like the stronger half of this pair. This horse has more representative races that make him a strong fit at this level than anyone else in this field. However, it’s not as if he’s showed much improvement since getting claimed by Linda Rice. He couldn’t get the job done as the favorite off the claim back in November, and then was no match for a tougher field two back. Dropped back down to this level last time, I thought he ran on decently after getting mildly steadied on the backstretch. However, he still lacked some late punch. He’s the one to beat, but I’m not thrilled with the idea of taking a short price on him. My top pick is another horse exiting that same race. B C Glory Days (#2) finished several lengths behind Bourbon’s Hope in that Jan. 1 event, but I thought he arguably ran just as well. He broke well but then got eased off the pace before making a middle move to challenge the leaders on the far turn. He ultimately faded, but he was also racing over a wet track that he may not have cared for. His prior effort on Dec. 9 was excellent, as he ran off setting legitimate fractions before settling for second. Then last time he again made a premature move going a demanding 9 furlongs, which is just too far for him. He’s back at the right distance and I think he could get a more patient ride from Katie Davis. The other horse that I want to use at a big price is Romanoatsee (#7). He’s light on speed figures, but he’s steadily been improving since launching a comeback last fall. He’s bred to handle route distances and strikes me as one that will get getting with added ground.

RACE 8: SON OF AN EX (#8)

Late Night Larry (#7) should go favored here as the new face in this New York-bred bunch. Despite being eligible for these races, he’s only raced in Maryland and Delaware thus far. He seemingly earned his chance to prove himself on this circuit with a decisive claiming victory at Laurel last time. However, that was going a bit farther than this, and he has been most successful in races around two turns. Furthermore, it’s not guarantee that he will be able to transfer that form to this circuit. Brittany Russell has plenty of success out of town, but she is just 7 for 46 (15%, $0.96 ROI) in NYRA dirt races over the past 5 years. He can obviously win, but I don’t expect him to offer any value. Main rivals Joey Loose Lips (#1) and Safalow’s Mission (#3) also make some sense, since they’re at least proven at this level. Yet I’m not sure either one really wants to go this far and others intrigue me at bigger prices. Two horses in this field exit the eighth race on Jan. 26, which was a tougher race for the level than this one, due to the presence of dominant winner Overstep. Uno (#4) tried to race that rival on the front end last time and paid the price, fading in the stretch after dueling through honest fractions. He actually ran pretty well sprinting two back, but he had previously been successful going longer distances at Finger Lakes. I think he can fare better here at a decent price. My top pick is Son of an Ex (#8), who also comes out of that Jan. 26 affair. He found himself a little too far back in the early stages that day, but he was running on well at the end, albeit belatedly. He hasn’t been in an ideal spot since returning from a layoff this winter, overmatched on Dec. 18 before getting a lackluster ride going too far on Jan. 5. He’s finally in a spot where he seems to fit well and hopefully the addition of blinkers can keep him a little more involved in the early going. He’s certainly good enough to beat this field on his best day.

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (February 12)

There is a bumper day of racing on Sunday with 11 races at Seoul from 10:40 to 18:00 and six at Busan from 11:05 to 15:40. There are no Listed or Graded races but plenty of competitive action to get stuck into. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies in the opener. (5) APEX did nothing on debut but significantly improved when stepped up to this trip in a similar all-filly race on January 15th, settling back before running on for 3rd in snowy conditions. She can be ridden further forward here and today can be her day. (9) KKUMUI SUNGAN was a quick 2nd on debut over 1000M before weakening having led on her first try at this distance on January 8th. She was favourite that day and with Moon Se-young remaining aboard, will probably start as the market leader here too. (3) J.Y. COCO put in a solid effort on debut to run 4th of eleven over 1200M when settling midfield and finishing off well. She should have derived benefit for that run and can match or better today. (8) AREUMDAUN SAI and the solitary debut-maker (7) BEAUTIFUL MELODY best of the rest.
Selections (5) Apex (9) Kkumui Sungan (3) J.Y. Coco (8) Areumdaun Sai
Next Best 7, 4
Fast Start 3, 5, 6, 9

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens with three of the twelve racing for the first time. (6) MULTI HIT looks the one to beat having shown steady improvement across three outings to date, culminating in a 3rd place last time out of January 15th when settling handy and finishing well over this distance. The time was significantly quicker than any of his rivals here have managed and he won’t really need to improve in order to win. In a race where the exposed form is so patchy, any first-timer who trialled well needs to be given a chance. (4) JORDAN FIGHTING fits the bill having run 3rd in his heat in a good time, showing close to the place. He draws well and the favourite aside, couldn’t pick a softer race to debut in. (3) HANEUL BULPAE beat a couple of these on his way to a fair 6th on debut on January 8th, having been very slowly away and last until the final furlong when he started to make up good ground. That puts him in the frame here. (11) JEONGMUN SPECTER and first-timer (1) OK DREAM, who led a trial, others to keep safe.
Selections (6) Multi Hit (4) Jordan Fighting (3) Haneul Bulpae (11) Jeongmun Specter

Three-year-old maidens with four of the twelve racing for the first time. There are two standouts both of who will need to be forgiven slightly lacklustre latest outings. (11) MAESTRA finished in 3rd place on both her first two starts, both at 1000M She was favourite for her first try at this distance on December 18th and she led until weakening for 6th. She should have come on for that experience and can get it right today. (4) HANGANG POWER stepped up to 1300M on his last start on January 7th, racing in midfield throughout and finishing 6th. Going on his previous 3rd place over 1000M though suggests he has a bit of speed about him and he too gets another chance today. (6) MY ONE improved at start number three running 4th over this distance and stopping the clock in a good time. A repeat will put him in the mix here (3) HALLSTATT and (9) SEONGEUN CROWN among others to consider.
Selections (11) Maestra (4) Hangang Power (6) My One (3) Hallstatt
Next Best 9, 12
Fast Start 7, 10, 11, 12

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

(3) JEOLDAE BOSS gets the nod here having been knocking on the door across his four starts so far. His latest, on January 13th, was his best so far when he settled midfield and steadily improved up to 2nd on the line having overcome a wide draw. That was over 1300M and there is no reason why the additional half furlong can’t suit. (7) CHONGAL CHARM put in a good showing when on pace over 1300M on December 11th and finishing a close 2nd. The same apprentice keeps the weight light, and he can put in a bold showing again. (8) TOP FRIEND came from well off the pace to run 2nd over 1300M on January 13th. He has got a long way back in each of his starts so far, but the additional half-furlong today may be to his benefit. (4) POWER RIDE and (9) SAEKDAL FIGHTER among others in the hunt.
Selections (3) Jeoldae Boss (7) Chongal Charm (8) Top Friend (4) Power Ride
Next Best 9, 2
Fast Start 2, 3, 9, 10

Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Not a strong maiden so we can accept (11) MIR POINT’s 5th place on Christmas Eve when he used up plenty of petrol coming out of the widest gate and getting to the speed. The time before he had run 2nd over 1000M. The draw is not ideal again but against this opposition, with a touch of luck at the start, he can win. (4) CUPID WOW has a 3rd place to his name over this distance. He draws well to be on pace here and he should be in this a long way. (12) GOLDEN LUCKY will need a line drawn through her latest over 1300M when knocking up very quickly and only beating two. If we go on her start prior to that though, she ran a good 2nd at this distance and she can be given another chance here. (9) DONGTEUJA WAY and (7) HIGH BORN ME others who can compete for the minor money.
Selections (11) Mir Point (4) Cupid Wow (12) Golden Lucky (9) Dongteuja Way

(10) PISTOL STAR will be a warm favourite. He comes in having beaten several of these on his way to 2nd place over class and distance on January 8th when leading for much of the way. He comes up very slightly in the weights and perhaps draws a bit wide for comfort, but neither should prevent him from going one better this time. (3) RUNNING WARRIOR came him 3rd in that race, having overcome gate twelve to get to a handy position and finish off well. She draws much better today and while she has five-lengths to make up on Pistol Star, she can be in the placing frame again. Seven months after his debut, (5) INDIE BULPAE returned for start number two and duly ran out a five-length winner over a mile on January 13th. He comes up in class and in trip here but there is no reason why he can’t measure up. (1) CENTUM THOR and (7) SUPER CRACK others to keep safe.
Selections (10) Pistol Star (3) Running Warrior (5) Indie Bulpae (1) Centum Thor
Next Best 7, 11
Fast Start 3, 6, 7, 10

Seoul Race 4: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

It’s about time (2) SUBAL DORIANG broke through. He’s come close recently, getting the worst of a desperately tight finish two starts back before beating a couple of these on his way to 4th place, both over 1400M, on January 15th after a slow start. A previous spin around two-turns didn’t go well but that was a long time ago and he looks ready for another crack. (10) BOSS BABY enters with form reading fairly and has placed at this distance. He dropped back to 1300M for his most recent start and from a long way back, ran out of track when passing horses late. He should be better for coming back up in trip and can be considered. (1) ZEROBAEK FIVE looks like she may finally be figuring things out with a 3rd and a 4th from her latest two, both at this distance. She draws well and the same apprentice keeps her carried weight light. (9) WONDERFUL WISHING and (4) WONPYEONG BIRD perhaps the best of a limited rest.
Selections (2) Subal Doriang (10) Boss Baby (1) Zerobaek Five (9) Wonderful Wishing
Next Best 4, 11
Fast Start 3, 6, 9, 11

Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

After an indifferent debut, (2) COME ON FIRST has finished no worse than 2nd in four subsequent starts. After striking over a mile at class 5 level in November he then won a valuable race at set weights on December 18th, also over the mile. Under today’s handicap conditions, he comes down significantly in the weights, he draws very well and he may take some beating. (1) GUARDIAN ANGEL will need a line drawn through his latest on January 13th when on pace over 1800M but weakening and finishing 10th of twelve. He was going well prior to that though with a win over this distance at class 5 level and then a runner-up finish at 1800M at this class. He draws well and can return to form. (12) LADY GOLDEN can mix her form but is another who has won over the mile and comes in having run 2nd at class and distance on January 13th. The draw is not ideal, but she can be competitive. (9) STAR ACE and (4) PURE MAGIC among others to keep safe.
Selections (2) Come On First (1) Guardian Angel (12) Lady Golden (9) Star Ace
Next Best 4, 7

(6) UPTOWN WHIZ ran out a ten-length winner at start number two over 1300M on January 7th in a good time. He comes up in class here as well as marginally in trip, but the manner of that win suggests there is more to come and he is the favourite. (10) G MOTION is yet to finish any worse thn 4th from five starts so far. His maiden win came at 1200M in December before he stepped up to 1400 for his first try at this class on January 15th and came from off the pace to run a good 3rd. The time was faster than any of the others here have achieved for the 1400M and he can be dangerous again here. (1) SPO BLADE has also been consistent across his six appearances. He enters off a good 3rd place at class and distance on January 14th and from a good gate and with Moon Se-young climbing aboard, he can be in the mix. (4) NUBIGO and (11) JANGBI MUJIGAE others to consider.
Selections (6) Uptown Whiz (10) G Motion (1) Spo Blade (4) Nubigo
Next Best 11, 2
Fast Start 2, 3, 6, 11

Busan Race 5: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(11) CHOICE RUN was a good winner at class and distance on January 8th when quickly in command and running on to win by a length. He comes up 3kg in the weights and has a worse draw but he can overcome both and win again. That’s because the second-pick was the horse who ran 2nd in that January 8th race and he gets an even worse gate. (12) RAP VERSA came from off the pace that day and while he never quite looked like getting to Choice Run, it was a strong showing. He only comes up 1kg and can get close again. (2) GEUMA MAIA is a bit of a wild card. She returns to action for the first time since last August when she scored her best finish to date, a 3rd place at this class and distance. She looked very well in a trial at the end of January and while she will need this, she has a good gate, a very light weight, and may be attractive at an each-way price. (4) CROWD ONE and (5) GREEN SPEED are others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (11) Choice Run (12) Rap Versa (2) Geuma Maia (4) Crowd One
Next Best 5, 1
Fast Start 3, 6, 9, 11

Seoul Race 6: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies (and one mare) only here and it is competitive. (10) BURUI KKOT is yet to win in ten attempts but has only missed the top-five on one occasion. She comes in off back-to-back runner-up finishes at this class, both over 1300M. She likes to sit handy or midfield and run on and today could be her day. The big danger is one gate to her inside. (9) NAEGILUI QUEEN got her maiden win at start number two in early December over 1000M before running a strong 3rd on her first try at this class at 1200M on January 7th when handy throughout. She comes up slightly in trip but that shouldn’t be an issue and she strong chances here. (2) HIDDEN BLADE has mixed his form and we’ll draw a line through her latest last month when shuffled back and scarcely a factor. The time before she was only very narrowly defeated at class and distance and on that form she is in this. (7) WALGADAK comes up in class following a win over 1200M on January 7th. It was a slow race but she has scope for improvement here. (3) ANOTHER LEVEL also in the frame.
Selections (10) Burui Kkot (9) Naegilui Queen (2) Hidden Blade (7) Walgadak

Plenty of these are no strangers to one another as they lots regularly feature in the class 1 handicaps at 1200M for 1400M. Today’s trip of seven furlongs is (5) DAEMANGUI GIL territory. His latest win was at class and distance last September, beating plenty of these, and has since run three times with a 3rd to Eoma Eoma in the Kookje Shinmun Trophy at this distance, a 2nd at 1200M and another 2nd over a mile last time. An apprentice keeps his weight low and at his best he wins. (4) SSONSAL beat Daemangui Gil and plenty of others who go here at 1200M on December 11th. He is very capable of running good races at this distance too and also has a 4kg apprentice on board to lessen the weight burden. (3) HIT YEGAM looked well when trialling at the end of January and carries 3kg less than when he was 7th behind Daemangui Gil in September. He can go better today at a probable each-way price. (7) YES PERFECT and (8) ONNURI JILJU among others in the frame.
Selections (5) Daemangui Gil (4) Ssonsal (3) Hit Yegam (7) Yes Perfect
Next Best 8, 11

Seoul Race 7: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(4) GLOBAL KANGTA will be hot favourite to strike here. He got his maiden win two starts back over 1200M at class 6 level before coming from off the pace from a wide draw to run 3rd on his first try at this class on January 8th. He comes up slightly in the weights but that’s more than balanced by a much better draw, and he will take some beating. (6) CHOEGANG MIRAE was a smart winner over this distance in December before having a tough day at the office over 1300M on his first try at this class on January 8th. He is better than that and from a good gate and back in trip, he can be given another chance. (11) KKANGDORI was a somewhat unexpected 2nd at class and distance on January 14th, running home strong from a long way back. He has since been through a trial in fine order and under a very light weight, can be running on again. (8) RAON THE HIGHMAN and (2) AL SIMON others with solid placing hopes.
Selections (4) Global Kangta (6) Choegang Mirae (11) Kkangdori (8) Raon The Highman
Next Best 2, 5

Seoul Race 8: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

A very competitive race. (4) CHOEGANG BLADE has missed out on the top four on just one occasion from five starts so far and has been working towards a win. He comes back in trip following an on-pace 2nd over 1400M in October and after sixteen weeks off, comes in fresh and from a good gate. It could be his day. (12) MUNHAK STORM is a class and distance winner already. He carries his fair share of weight here and doesn’t get the best of draws but he enters off a good 4th place last time out and he should be in the mix again. (1) MIGHTY Q has begun her career promisingly enough with back-to-back runner-up finishes both over 1000M. She steps up in trip today and also faces males for the first time, but she draws very nicely and can be competitive. (11) TAPDOWN was a surprising class and distance winner on January 8th and while he comes up significantly in the weights, warrants respect here. (3) KING KALLE is the wildcard, racing for the first time since last August but put in a good trial two weeks ago.

Another wide-open race. (7) YONGHOJIMA just about gets the nod, entering off back-to-back runner-up finishes, most recently at class and distance on January 15th when settling midfield and running on, to be beaten only half a length on the line. That was his seventh runner-up finish, and he could go one better today. If yet again, Yonghojima finds just one too quick, it could be (9) RAON THE QUALITY. Unlike Yonghojima, she knows how to win having done so in both her latest two, both over 1200M and both in good times from the front. She comes up significantly in trip today, but she can be a danger. (6) DRAGON STAR also got two consecutive victories in November and December to be rapidly promoted to this class. He was sent up to 1800M for his first go at this level on November 14th when he finished in the middle of the pack, but the mile may suit more. (8) STAR BLADE and (5) HANGANG MAGIC are others to keep safe.

(8) RAON GIANT has won five of four in total and his last three consecutively, including the Listed Gwacheon Mayor’s Trophy for juvenile fillies and most recently at this class over 1200M on Christmas Day. She comes up 3.5kg in the weights and also tackles 1400M for the first time, but neither should be an issue and she is strongly favoured to score again here, leading from gate to wire once more. (10) STRIDE UP ran out a class and distance winner in a fast time on January 14th. He was at big odds that day but he had been showing signs of form in races leading up to that and it perhaps shouldn’t have been so much of a surprise. He warrants a little more respect here. (3) YELLOW CAT ran 3rd behind Raon Giant on Christmas Day. She has a strong record with four wins from nine starts and should be there or thereabouts again. (2) FLYING GOLD and (7) HAEDEULMOE others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (8) Raon Giant (10) Stride Up (3) Yellow Cat (2) Flying Gold
Next Best 7, 11

Seoul Race 11: Class 2 (2000M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

A really good race to finish with. (5) CHOEGANG GAME is a winner of six from thirteen and while he found himself out of his depth in the G1 President’s Cup last November, he resumed normal service on December 17th with a comfortable win at this class over 1800M. He comes up 2kg in the weights but his class should see him through here. (6) SARYEONI FIRST was last seen running 4th in the Grand Prix Stakes over 2300M on December 11th. It was very much a case of best of the rest that day as he was a long way behind the first three placegetters, but he still beat a lot of established class 1 horses. He looks a true stayer, and this should suit. (8) ORAE HAMKKEHAJA is up in class and distance rapidly after back-to-back wins which also bring him from class 4 to class 2 in double-quick time. Saryeoni First beat him when they met at class 4 level over 1800M in September but he carries a feather weight today and can measure up. (2) QUEENS TOUR and (10) CHEONJI YEOGEOL others in the frame.

Gulfstream Park Hotlist - February 12
Feb. 11, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (5) Our Flag Flying (B) was a good third in her turf debut and should notch a victory here. (3) Geyser Road missed by a neck on Tapeta and should handle turf. (1) Spun Oats is an interesting firster. (4) Sassy But Precious rallied for second and merits consideration. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-5.
3rd race – (7) Ensemble has a nice late kick and should like the distance. (4) Blue Times should benefit from the slower pace at this distance. (1) Bravo Kitten has some late kick and will be helped by a ground-saving trip. (3) She Fled the Scene won at this distance last year. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-7.
5th race – (7) Kinchen is long overdue for a maiden win and gets the nod here. (5) War Princess was an improved third last time and looks like the one to fear. (11) Wardeya should be a factor while making her debut. (9) Reaching Stride will welcome a return to turf. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-7-9-11.
7th race – (4) Legendary seems primed for a big effort in her debut. (10) Lady Irvine was a game third in her debut and looks like the main rival. (5) A.P. Lady took a step forward, finishing second at Churchill Downs, and cannot be ignored. (6) Paleta can make some noise in this field. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-10.
9th race – (5) Seduction was second in the slop in her debut and can advance to the winner’s circle here. (10) Okay Fine adds blinkers after finishing third and can take another step forward here. (1) Get Your Kicks debuts and might be another promising runner for Brown. (9) Shade gets Irad for her debut and figures to be a contender. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-9-10.

RACE 1: Post: 11:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Bold Choice; 3-Smart Monique
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Bold Choice is stretching out for the first time and projects as the controlling speed in this below average maiden special weight turf miler for state-bred fillies and mares. Despite the fact that she’s burned money in the past, the Steve Knapp-trained filly exits a live race and has never faced an easier field, so with the switch to hustling rider Edwin Maldonado we’re expecting her to take this field gate to wire. Smart Monique is an eight race maiden but has hit the board six times, and is overdue to finally break through. Second at 20-1 with a career top speed figure affair over this course and distance last month while more than five lengths clear of the rest, she will be dangerous if she can turn in two alike, her low profile connections notwithstanding. We’ll try to get by using just these two in rolling exotic play.

RACE 2: Post: 11:29 PT Grade: C
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Jacqueline Cochran; 5-Magic Capital
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: This maiden claiming ($40,000) main track miler for sophomore fillies drew just five runners, so there’s not much to work with. Jacqueline Cochran exits a tougher maiden special weight state-bred turf event at this distance last month and though finishing eighth was beaten just four lengths and earned a speed figure good enough to handle this field. There’s not a lot of value at or near her morning line of 9/5 but by default she’s the logical top pick. Magic Capital has three sprint preps under her belt, most recently winding up a distant third while passing a few late to indicate she may enjoy today’s added distance. She’s slow on numbers but at least they’re moving in the proper direction. In a race that might otherwise be best left alone, both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 3: Post: 11:59 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Ice Queen
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: If you think you’ve seen this race before, you have. Six of the eight entrants exit the same Jan. 13 event over this course and distance for restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claiming fillies and mares. Bali Dancer finished second in that race at 42-1, but today she is marooned in the far outside eight post position so there’s no guarantee she will run as well. Among the others, Ice Queen, third in that race and in the frame in her last two, is guaranteed a good ground saving trip from her favorable two hole draw (she was stuck in the 10 post last time) and seems likely to run well, though with a career record of 1-17 she’s hardly one to trust. In a race lacking in early speed (and late speed, too), the daughter of Cairo Prince should be able to establish the running and have every chance to keep on going, so in a field without no other attractive options we’ll reluctantly make her a rolling exotic single in a race that we’ll otherwise pass.

RACE 4: Post: 12:29 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Italiano
Backups/Savers: 5-Established; 3-Horn of Plenty

Forecast: Italiano gets the nod on top in this extended sprint for $16,000 older claimers after looming a threat but then losing his steam late when third for $20,000 last month. A two-time winner over the Santa Anita main track, the Jeff Mullins-trained eight-year-old retains top rider Juan Hernandez, and with an extra half furlong to work with along with a patient ride that brings out his best he should be able to produce a winning late bid. Established won the race that our top pick exits and should be tough again while projecting to be on or near the lead throughout. There’s a two pound weight shift in favor of Italiano (for whatever that’s worth) and the Tim Yakteen-trained gelding was a voided claim two runs back, so we’re not sure if he can fire a similar shot today. Horn of Plenty is a devout late-running sprinter fresh from a nice score (but race-shape aided) in his local debut for $12,500 last month. He’ll need to improve today but probably is worth including on a ticket or two as a backup.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 5: Post: 12:59 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Teena Ella; 1-Wudi
Backups/savers: 8-Foolish

Forecast: We have a suspicion that Teena Ella, a so-far disappointing daughter of War Front from the brilliant race mare Beholder, will improve big time in her first try on grass, and if she does the Richard Mandella-trained sophomore can earn her diploma in this six furlong maiden sprint. Most recently third in a better-than-par dirt dash after pressing the pace before weakening late, the Spendthrift Farm homebred improved her Beyer speed figure by 13 points off her debut effort, and with top rider Juan Hernandez staying aboard she should be able to step forward once again. Her sire gets better turf runners than dirt and hopefully that will be the case with this filly. Wudi flashed promise in her debut when cutting out the fractions before being worn down late but didn’t build on that promising effort when fading to fifth at even money in the same race our top pick exits. She, too, seems likely to move up grass (Uncle Mo x Giant’s Causeway), so if she breaks running from the rail the Bob Baffert-trained filly will have her chance to show her best stuff. Foolish performed quite well in maiden claiming company over this course in her debut last month - she was almost six clear of the rest when finishing second - and though this step up to straight maiden company will test her she did earn a number that makes her a reasonable threat, especially if our two preferred runners do each other in on the front end. Toss her in as a saver.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 6: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-I Don’t Get It; 3-Yellow Brick
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: I Don’t Get It flashed good speed and stayed on willingly when a promising fourth in a hot sprint won by Hejazi (with Worcester second) in his debut last month and today stretches out to a mile, lands the favorable rail, and is a likely candidate to take his foes gate to wire. The Doug O’Neill-trained son of Cloud Computing shows two easy breezes since that mid-January outing to tick him over, and while we probably would have preferred to see another sprint under his belt before trying this distance he may be good enough to wire the field, nonetheless. Yellow Brick is strictly the one to beat. In the frame in both of his starts, most recently a strong runner-up to the promising Harlocap while more than five lengths clear of the rest over this track and distance, the son of Quality Road seems likely to be produce another forward move with Flavian Prat staying aboard. He’ll be the strong favorite, and deservedly so.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 7: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: C
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Sapadilla; 5-Sugar Sugar
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: This bottom-rung ($20,000) maiden claiming abbreviated sprint for older fillies and mares is typically weak and uninspiring, so tread lightly. Sapadilla, third in her last three starts, switches to Frankie and may be ready to earn her diploma in her ninth career start. She most recently earned a career top 58 Beyer speed figure, which actually is better than par for this level, so if she can duplicate that performance today she can finally graduate. Sugar Sugar has a look despite finishing sixth with a less than ideal trip in the same race our top pick exits. She has back numbers that are good enough to win and actually finished slightly ahead of Sapadilla two races back, so you probably should include her as well.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 8: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-The Wild Grazer; 4-Ag Bullet
Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: The Wild Grazer is unbeaten in two starts since arriving from Ireland and has looked the part in both wins, mostly recently when producing a sharp turn of foot to win a Hillside Turf Course allowance race with complete authority. Today she stretches out to a mile in the Lady of Shamrock Stakes for sophomore fillies and if she’s not just a late-running sprinter (it could go either way on this) the Jeff Mullins-trained import can score again. Ag Bullet was a visually pleasing gate-to-wire maiden sprint winner over the local lawn last month and similar tactics surely will be employed with the stretch out in trip. The daughter of Twirling Candy got away soft early splits before kicking home with authority, so it’s possible the win made her look better than she is, but we don’t think so.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Fair Grounds - Race #6

Picks
Notes

#2 Zing
She was a bit overbet at 1/5 last time out when second, but I really like that she's back in with allowance company here off the claim, and this team does really good work with these types. Interesting on the rise.

#3 Mytown Myrules
She rolled a short field of maidens last out, handling three others by 16 lengths, and while there may still be some upside here, I'd want a fair price to find out if she can back that up here.

#6 Non Violence
She stretched out nicely at second asking to finish behind a logical winner, and she should be in another great spot near the front turning for home. No surprises here.

Race Summary
Zing steps up again off the Claire claim, and she might get a decent enough pace to close into with a couple blowout maiden winners coming back here and meeting another proven pace player. Let's see.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#8 Artie's Rumor
Tactical type should be able to work out a good trip tracking the pace, and he has some room to do better here with a cleaner go this time around. Playable.

#3 New Year Surprise
Think he has a little price appeal in the gimmicks here, as he moved up last out when getting back on the turf, and he has actually been pretty consistent kind on the grass with similar.

#6 Monition
He has a claim on this with one of his better efforts, but I worry that he's not known for digging in late, and I am not sure he's going to be clear in the lane to avoid a challenge.

Race Summary
Artie's Rumor has tables to turn out of that last race, but he is capable of something better and should offer a mid-range price to find out.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#3 Max Pandowdy
Think you can make a case for several of them today, but this guy is really reliable for a horse at this level, and I think he gets the right race flow for his one-paced grinding run to work here.

#9 Stockpiler
He steps up after clearing his last condition when dropped in for this price, and he'll go for a new barn this time around while coming right back in a logical spot.

#4 Ministry of Art
Think he might be an okay price in this spot, and he wasn't embarrassed with similar in his local debut last out when finishing behind the top choice.

Race Summary
Max Pandowdy and Ministry of Art might be decent alternatives if Stockpiler gets bet in here, and 'Pandowdy might get past the few in front of him in the lane.

# 7 RAGTIME BLUES 5/2

# 1 HANDSOME CAT 2/1

PRINTRACK looks formidable to best this field. Gomez will probably be able to get this gelding to break out quickly in here. RAGTIME BLUES - Has been moving very well and has among the strongest speed in the race for today's distance. Ran a very strong last race. HANDSOME CAT - He should be considered given the respectable speed numbers.

#5 SUGAR SUGAR (ML=3/1)
#4 SAPADILLA (ML=7/2)

SUGAR SUGAR - This equine is utmost in earnings per start. She looks sharp in today's event. SAPADILLA - A thoroughbred coming back this promptly after a good effort is a good sign. This horse is not the morning line favorite, yet she finished ahead of today's chalk in their last race together.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 CAT BANDIT (ML=4/1), #6 SPOILED ROTTEN (ML=4/1), #10 VEGAS DREAM (ML=8/1),

CAT BANDIT - 4/1 is just too low of a reward to take on most any mount that has run poorly in back to back races. SPOILED ROTTEN - Not easy to invest in any thoroughbred in a sprint affair at 4/1 when she hasn't shown any on the board results in sprints in the last two months. VEGAS DREAM - Improbable for this entrant to make a winning move with no recent good showings in a short distance event. This questionable contender showed little last time finishing seventh. Don't expect any betterment in today's race.

# 6 GENERAL NOOZ 8/1

I think SWIFTY DEVIL is a competitive choice. Look for a quite good pace improvement from this equine who enters with second time Lasix today. Gorham has one of the most favorable winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. Is a key contender - given the 84 speed rating from his most recent race. LOST WEEKEND - Could provide positive returns based on very strong recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 75. Bettors should probably note that this equine runs with second time Lasix today. GENERAL NOOZ - Wagerers ought to note that this pony runs with second time Lasix today. Lately Dilodovico has provided investors with a very good winning percentage with horses running in dirt sprint races.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2 - Post: 1:14pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 66

#2 ONE TOUGH DAME (ML=3/1)
#5 HEAVEN'S D'ORO (ML=9/2)

ONE TOUGH DAME - Don't look any further. This racer has my money. Way too much pace. Was in a Maiden Special race at Tampa Bay Downs last out. That race had a class number of 85 and she is moving down in this race. A certain strong challenger. This filly's last speed rating is lofty enough to score here, I'll wager on her right back this time out. Has a good opportunity in this race to break maiden moving over to the dirt right here. 61-63-69 are last three speed figs. Improving each time out is something she should do again right here. HEAVEN'S D'ORO - Taking a trip to a lower class rank; has the capability to make her presence felt. Hamm adds Lasix for the 2nd time today. Should be helpful right here in this race. Have to forget about that last grass race. This filly should do better hitting the dirt in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 GOODBETTERBEST (ML=5/2), #8 NINETY NINE (ML=9/2), #1 BEAUTIFUL ASTRAY (ML=8/1),

GOODBETTERBEST - I find it hard to bet on any thoroughbred in a short distance event at 5/2 when she hasn't shown any competitive efforts in sprints in the last couple months. When looking at today's class rating, she will have to earn a better speed rating than in the last race to compete in this dirt sprint. NINETY NINE - Just don't figure that she is pegged at the proper price at the probable odds. BEAUTIFUL ASTRAY - This questionable contender didn't go to the front end and didn't close any ground down the lane last time she ran. Today's race is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a sprint race in the last sixty days. Not the greatest of signals.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Go with #2 ONE TOUGH DAME on top if we're getting at least 7/5 odds

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Pistons/Raptors UNDER 228
The Toronto Raptors play at one of the slowest tempos in the NBA. When they get together with the Pistons, it always tends to be low scoring. The Pistons and Raptors have combined for 226, 214 and 190 points in their last three meetings. Five of the last six meetings have seen 228 or fewer combined points. The UNDER is 6-1 in Pistons last seven games overall and would be 7-0 if not for a double-OT game against the Spurs. Give me the UNDER.

NBA | Pistons vs Raptors

Play on: Raptors -11 -110 at circa

Two teams on the outside looking inside matchup today as the 11th place Raptors host the 14th place Pistons. If the playoffs where held today, both teams would be left off. And, while it looks like Detroit is done with just 15 wins, the Raptors are just a half game back of a playoff spot. The Pistons are 15-42 S/U and 24-30-3 ATS on the season. They snapped a three game losing streak with a win at home over the Spurs last game, 138-131, as a 6-point favorite. They are still 3-9 S/U and ATS in their last 12 games. The Pistons are also 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games on one game of rest. Toronto is 26-31 S/U and 27-28-2 ATS on the season. The Raptors had their three game win streak snapped last game by Utah, 116-122, as 8.5-point home favorites. Toronto is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games vs a team with a losing road record. They are also 6-2 ATS overall their last eight home games. If Toronto wants to make the playoffs this year, they have to beat teams like Detroit at home. Play Toronto.
