RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 9-Chief Council; 5-Six Feet; 1-Carol’s Comic
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Chief Council is listed at 12-1 on the morning line and might be better than that in this turf sprint for older straight maidens. The son of Into Mischief removes blinkers, is comfortably drawn outside, retains Edwin Maldonado, and projects to enjoy a cozy stalking trip. Two starts isn’t a career, so if he can run at all, this would be a good place to show it. His morning drills aren’t half bad, so let’s go for a tote buster. Six Feet has enough speed to be in the first flight, and this will be his first try on grass, so he could easily stick better on the sod, and with Square Eddie on the bottom that could very well happen. Carol’s Comic, runner-up in his last pair, figures in the fray once again, though as a nine race maiden he may have gotten into the habit of losing. These are the three we’ll be using in our rolling exotics but if you feel the need to spread deeper, go right ahead.

RACE 2: Post: 12:59 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Holden the Lute; 2-It’s My House
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Seven furlongs looks like an ideal trip for Holden the Lute, who shows excellent form over a middle distance but tends to come up a bit empty under pressure late as if to indicate that he might prefer an extended sprint. That theory gets tested in this five runner affair for second level allowance older horses and on pure numbers the Mark Glatt-trained son of Midnight Lute should be capable of winning. Stablemate It’s My House, a first-off-the-claim ($50,000) for Glatt, gives the barn a powerful one-two punch. Back on dirt and like ‘Lute shortening to a sprint, the son of Anthony’s Cross could find himself as the controlling speed in a race that projects to have modest early splits. With speed rider Edwin Maldonado taking the call, that’s the strategy we’re expecting to see.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 3: Post: 1:29 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Thirty Four Coupe
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Thirty Four Coupe exits a series of much tougher straight maiden events and should find this maiden $50,000 field well within his capabilities. Most effective on the front end or from a pace stalking position, the 4-year-old gelding catches a field without much speed other than possibly Derby Prospect, so the son of Run Away and Hide should have every chance to earn his diploma in his second start off a year layoff. With the switch to Frankie, from a good inside draw, and at 2-1 on the morning line, he looks reasonably solid in the win pool and as a single in the various rolling exotics.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 4: Post: 1:59 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Alice Marble
Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Alice Marble has done most of her racing on grass but she can handle the dirt equally as well, and after missing as the favorite in her most recent two starts the daughter of Grazen should be set to regain her winning form in this year’s edition of the Spring Fever Stakes over six furlongs on the main track. In a five-runner affair, the Phil D’Amato-trained six-year-old projects to settle in behind the leaders and then kick home when called upon. At 7/5 on the morning (we’ll take it if we can get it), she is a win play and rolling exotic single.

__________________________________________________ ___________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 5: Post: 2:29 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-She’s Got a Way; 8-Katerini; 9-Good Boo Joo
Backups/savers: 3-Aventapp

Forecast: The fifth race is a grass grab bag for starter optional claiming fillies and mares over the extended sprint turf distance of six and one-half furlongs on the flat course. Best advice is to spread as deeply as your budget allows. She’s Got a Way drops into a seller for the first time after a series of races vs. much stronger allowance company, and against this group the Peter Eurton-trained filly may have found her friends. She’s just 1-for-15 in her career and probably isn’t one to trust, but that one win was accomplished over the local lawn, and with the switch to top jockey Juan Hernandez coupled with the drop in class the daughter of Tonalist gets top billing. Katerini probably didn’t beat much when graduating vs. maiden $50,000 foes earlier in the meeting over the local lawn but she was visually pleasing in a victory that produced a career top speed figure. With another forward move today, she’ll be right there despite the class hike. Good Boo Joo was an easy winner over this course and distance last fall and then was a solid third in a similar event last month while continuing her improving pattern. She’s drawn a bit farther out than we’d prefer but if she can get over and secure a stalking trip she’ll have her chance when the pressure is turned on. Aventapp, perhaps the quickest in the field, has been away since June but has run well fresh in the past and could stick around for at least a piece of it.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 6: Post: 3:02 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Nolo Contesto
Backups/savers: 3-Papale

Forecast: Nolo Contesto hadn’t won a race in four years prior to his dismantling of a restricted (nw-2) $16,000 claiming field last month in a race that earned a much better than par speed figure, so if he can duplicate that performance for his new low profile connections the seven year old ridgeling can repeat on the raise. Noted speed rider Edwin Maldonado knows him well and likely will attempt to employ similar front running tactics in this main track miler, though there is other speed (Papale) that could be just as quick leaving the gate as he is. Drawn outside, the son of Pioneerof the Nile might then be forced to stalk and pounce, and we’re not sure if he’ll be as effective with that type of trip. In a race that might be a good one to treat with caution, we’ll prefer Nolo Contesto on top while relegating Papale to a backup role.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 7: Post: 3:34 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Rebel Posse
Backups/savers: 8-Saffa’s Day

Forecast: First-time gelding Rebel Posse drops to his lowest level ever and should have no excuses in this extended turf sprint over the flat course for $32,000 older horses. The Phil D’Amato-trained gelding has several faster-than-par speed figures for this level and projects to enjoy an ideal second flight stalking trip and then have dead aim through the lane. Saffa’s Day has found his niche as a late-running sprinter, and after winning at this level from off the pace last month on the main track the son of Carpe Diem gelding will try his luck on grass. He finished off the board in his only prior outing on turf but that was a Hillside Course affair against much tougher foes, so we won’t hold that performance against him. Let’s try to get past this race using just two, with the main push going to Rebel Passe.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 8: Post: 4:06 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Getthemoney
Backups/Savers: 2-Blessed Touch

Forecast: After failing to run to her works in her Del Mar debut last August, Getthemoney stepped forward big time the following month in her second career start when leaving a good field in the dust by more than five lengths while earning a stakes-quality speed figure. Soon after she was stopped on and turned out, but the daughter of Midnight Lute has looked the part in recent workouts that should have her fit and ready, so we suspect she’ll return as good as she left in this first-level allowance sprint for sophomore fillies. The Brian Koriner-trained filly adds Lasix, retains Mike Smith, and projects as the speed of the speed. Blessed Touch failed to handle two turns when unplaced in the Starlet Stakes-G1 at Los Alamitos in December but after a couple of months off she should be able to regain her form at this level and at this shorter distance. Her sprint record last fall was outstanding and included a runaway maiden win (with a powerful 90 Beyer speed figure) and a strong second place finish in the Desi Arnaz Stakes behind Justique. We’ll include both in our rolling exotics and then press with extra tickets keying Getthemoney on top.

__________________________________________________ ___________________________
__________________________________________________ ____________________________

RACE 9: Post: 4:38 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Danehill Song; 11-Isabel Ludlow; 3-Proof She Zips
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Danehill Song was beaten 25 lengths in a fast, highly rated main track sprint in her debut in early January, but she was reasonably well-backed that day (4-1) so we suspect that performance wasn’t a true indicator of her ability. She retains leading pilot Juan Hernandez, adds Lasix, and puts on blinkers, so we’ll give the Vladimir Cerin-trained filly another chance in a completely unclassified grass grab bag sprint for state-bred sophomores. Isabel Ludlow is bred to win early and handle turf (Grazen), so she must be considered a contender by default. Not the prettiest of movers in her morning drills but a decent looker with a bit of power, she brings with her a typically slow work tab that is typical of maidens from the Steve Miyadi stable. The presence of Johnny V. certainly is encouraging. Proof She Zips was nosed out in an open straight maiden dash over the all-weather surface up north while earning a number that makes her competitive on this circuit. She’s out of a mare by City Zip, so the Ellen Jackson-trained daughter of Idiot Proof could step forward considerably with the switch in surface. We’ll sink or swim with these three in our rolling exotics, with the main gamble at 4-1 going to Danehill Song.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis February 19, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a solid 15-race card scheduled. The co-features go in Race 3 and Race 12, an Open Handicap Trot and Open Handicap Pace both with an $18,500 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

4-Cool Man Dude (6/5)-Drops to a soft spot and Davis Jr grabs the lines. Should be on the point off the gate and if dialed on high, has a big chance to make every call a winning one at a tiny price.
6-Closing Statement (7-1)-This Bendis pupil tries hard and has the gate speed to land near the chalk. The driver change to Myers should help and could surprise at a solid price if the one above falters.

Race 12

5-Bettor Than Spring (5/2)-This Kreiser 8-year-old likes to takes pictures, fits well with this group and could be bet down. Should be racing near the top of the stack, or could wire this crew. Davis Jr can work a smooth trip but probably doesn't offer any value.
8-Bronx Seelster (7/2)-This Burke trainee is looking for its 3rd straight and has been an odds on choice in 2 of the last 3. Using and hoping the post helps the price because the gate speed is there is be put in play early on.

Race 13

1-Speedy Dominic A (9/5)-Dominic likes to burn money, and he should be bet hard again in the 1st start for Rhoades. This is a soft spot and with this post draw he should have his way on the point. Not loving the short price but tough to ignore at this class and Merriman may have the key for success.
5-Record Machine (5/2) -Slow starts sometimes hurt this veteran and that was the case in last. Got stuck behind a horse with no "go" right after the opening turn and the trip didn't get much better afterwards. Closed willingly and will look for better with a new set of hands in Davis Jr.
7-Just Toyin With Ya (15-1)-Didn't get the smoothest journey last time and Lems, who is the regular pilot is back at the controls. Has enough gate speed to land in a decent seat and if the pace is hot chances go up. Using at this price and could surprise with the right trip.

Race 14

4-Not Today (9/2)-This the 3rd start since a sick scratch on 12-26 and appears to be back in solid race shape. Won 11 of 45 starts in 2022, will look for an aggressive steer and a big try tonight.
5-Tick's A Yankin (5/2)-Broke last in a short field in the same race as the one above and never had a chance against a well meant winner. Drops to a level of recent success and will look for better.

Golden Hour Wagers - Race #3 - Post: 4:38pm - Maiden Special - 6.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $67,000 Class Rating: 70

Rating: https://www.trackmaster.com/images/golden.jpghttps://www.trackmaster.com/images/golden.jpghttps://www.trackmaster.com/images/golden.jpg

#1 MOOREA TIME (ML=3/1)
#12 SMOKEMONTHECLIFF (ML=8/1)
#4 CLASSY CANDY (ML=10/1)
#11 ISABEL LUDLOW (ML=6/1)

MOOREA TIME - This filly is in the top spot in (EPS) earnings per start. Give the once over to this animal in the paddock. This horse obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has earned the highest speed figure on the turf at the distance-surface. Dropping in class rating points from her November 20th race at Del Mar. Based on that element, I will give this animal the advantage. This horse may have too much power on the turf for the rest of the field. When the field turns for home, she could put these away. Several blow outs in the last two weeks. I like the workout pattern on this animal. SMOKEMONTHECLIFF - On board this horse on Feb 5th and Vazquez is right back in the irons today. Trainer Metz moves this animal down in class ranks to face weaker company. Look for a strong effort at this level. In her maiden trip on the track, this animal was beat up badly. She should improve in this race right here. Metz adds Lasix for the 2nd time today. Could make the difference in this race. CLASSY CANDY - With no PP lines, one of the variables I look at are trainer stats, and Knapp has a +128 pct ROI clip with first timers. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here. ISABEL LUDLOW - Miyadi is strong in grass sprints. This horse should have no justifications if she doesn't win. Miyadi adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a significant improvement.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 DANEHILL SONG (ML=4/1), #3 PROOF SHE ZIPS (ML=4/1), #8 SQUARE AND RARE (ML=5/1),

DANEHILL SONG - Had to show me lots more last time around the track. Never made much of an impact. PROOF SHE ZIPS - Doesn't seem to be in a strong circumstance this time. SQUARE AND RARE - Don't figure that this entrant has what it takes to cross the finish line in first this time around.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Have to go with #1 MOOREA TIME on the win end if we get at least 3/1 odds

# 2 UNDOUBTEDLY 3/1

# 1 PROMISEHER AMERICA 7/2

# 6 AVANT 5/2

UNDOUBTEDLY has a competitive shot to take this race. The average class rating alone makes this entrant a solid choice. Lezcano has been scorching the last month, winning at a nifty 21 percent clip. Make a note that this horse runs with second time Lasix today. PROMISEHER AMERICA - This pick will feel the med change - with second time Lasix today. Ought to come out strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved swiftly to the lead recently. AVANT - Pletcher has a sharp win percent with horses racing in dirt route races. Could beat this field given the 68 Equibase Speed Fig posted in her last outing.

# 2 TIME OF PEACE 2/1

# 4 HIGHLY NOTED 5/1

# 6 TEMPLE STORM 3/1

I've got to go with TIME OF PEACE. His 61 average has this colt with among the most favorable Equibase Speed Figures here. Has been running well in races of this distance, going 3 for 17 under similar conditions. Had one of the strongest speed figures of this group in his last race. HIGHLY NOTED - Torres has this gelding moving well and is a very strong selection based on the very strong speed figures posted in sprint races recently. Looks very good to be close to the lead at the first call. TEMPLE STORM - This colt is coming back quickly to the track. Ran a sharp last race.

#5 I'M A SPECIAL STAR (ML=4/1)
#6 CONATIVE (ML=8/5)

I'M A SPECIAL STAR - He got a decent figure the last time he tried this trip. Taking this jock/trainer combination is a good decision. This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Ramos gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. Always be wary of the longer priced equine when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Just missed hitting the board on January 18th at Delta Downs. With respectable odds in this event, he has my interest. A little change in scenery has got to do this thoroughbred well. Reading the past performance lines, it seems like he likes to visit the winner's circle at different tracks. CONATIVE - Gonzalez drops him down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping info to figure that this horse should have a chance to win at this level.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 POWERSHOT (ML=7/2), #3 THREE RUN HOMER (ML=5/1), #1 KID SLIPPER (ML=6/1),

POWERSHOT - Not probable for this horse to make a winning move with no recent success in a sprint event. This entrant hasn't shown too much in the last two affairs. THREE RUN HOMER - Just can't bet on this horse. Didn't show me anything positive last race out or on December 9th. KID SLIPPER - The Equibase speed figures continue to fall, 64/51/33. Not a healthy indication. If you keep playing these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be frustrated most of the time.

Rocket Picks : Oaklawn Park, Gulfstream Park, and Santa Anita for February 19, 2023
By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s get another big Saturday of racing kicked off today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Santa Anita and Oaklawn Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s GO!

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

Gulfstream Park February 19, 2023

Race 7: Maiden Special Weight

#1 Doral came within a neck of winning on debut last time out, which was the first start of her career. If she moves forward off of that race she will be hard to beat today. #2 Im a Sure Thing was a solid third behind our top choice in her last start. She should be competitive against this group today as well.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming
freestar

#5 Radio Days gets solid class relief today, while also cutting back to a distance where she has proven to be solid. If she is well prepared off the layoff she should be tough to beat in this spot. #2 Music City Star drops down to the allowance level after running fourth last time out against stakes runners. This drop in class will help her chances.

Race 9: Allowance Optional Claiming

#5 Kanthari will look for two in a row today after an impressive debut victory over this track in her last start. This is the next step up the class level for her. #4 Hope in Him has won four straight coming into this one; however, those races were over the synthetic surface. She will be moving over to the turf today, which is a question mark.

Race 10: Maiden Claiming

#4 Heart Boy has finished second in back to back races against similar runners coming into this race. A similar effort will make him competitive again today. #7 Gliding Afleet will move over to the synthetic surface today, while also taking a big drop down in class after running poorly on debut against tougher.

RACE 5: BALDIZAR (#5)

There are a couple of lightly raced 4-year-olds who figure to attract plenty of support in this competitive state-bred optional claimer. Awesome Native (#2) is clearly an exciting prospect. He took money on debut and delivered a professional effort, but was arguably more impressive last time, as he showed push-button acceleration in upper stretch before getting geared down to the wire. There’s clearly ample talent here, but he’s now stepping up to face a much tougher field. There really isn’t any pedigree to suggest he’s supposed to get better with more ground, and he’s drawn the rail after benefiting from outside post positions in his prior two starts. Overstep (#6) is another who figures to take money. This colt showed promise as a juvenile, winning his debut impressively before running a good second in the Sleepy Hollow. Yet he didn’t return for 15 months after that, only getting back to the races in January. He got the job done in his return, but he did have to get asked for some run to put that field away after getting some pressure on the front end. He needs to do better to beat this group and I’m not sure he’ll offer much value. Ouster (#1) seems like a better option, especially if his entrymate scratches to run in a stakes on Monday. He’s really blossomed since stretching out. He initially showed improvement going longer on turf, but actually improved when switched back to dirt last time. He had no issues handling 1 1/8 miles, but he should be right at home turning back to the one-turn mile given his versatility. My top pick is Baldizar (#5). He’s yet another lightly raced runner, and has been improving with each start against winners. He didn’t run particularly fast on Oct. 14, but was a facile winner of that race, always in hand while never asked for his best. He didn’t seem to quite handle the 9-furlong distance two back in a race that featured a pretty fast pace for that trip. Yet he took a big step forward last time when running second at this level. He has the talent to win at this level and may get somewhat overlooked compared to his main rivals.

RACE 7: WIN THE DAY (#1)

This N2X allowance race features a rematch between Gasoline (#7) and Tonal Impact (#8), who finished a half-length apart going this distance at the N1X level last month. Gasoline was arguably a little lucky to win that race, as he got to set a moderate pace while controlling on the front end. Tonal Impact might have run the better race, as he closed from off the pace. Both he and third-place finisher Anejo returned to win their subsequent starts, flattering the form of that affair. Tonal Impact is now wheeling back in just 3 weeks after winning his own N1X race in late January, but he seems to thrive on the activity. They’re the two logical horses to beat, but there are some others to consider in this competitive race. Linda Rice’s other runner Curlin’s Wisdom (#3) is in with a chance at what figures to be a more generous price. It’s hard to know what happened to him last time when he completely failed to show up in the slop, but his prior form makes him a major player here, and he’s handled two turns before. My top pick is Win the Day (#1). This horse has tried a variety of surfaces in his recent starts, but I think he’s best on dirt. The key for him is getting added ground, and he figures to make use of his stamina going this 1 3/16 miles distance. He showed ability early in his 3-year-old season before handling turf in the summer at Del Mar, though the distance probably worked for him in those races. He ran the best race of his career going 12 furlongs in the Tokyo City last year and more recently has been one-paced on synthetic at Turfway. Doug O’Neill tends to send live runners here, as he is 8 for 41 (20%, $3.07 ROI) on dirt at NYRA over the past 5 years.

RACE 8: STARRY MIDNIGHT (#4)

Les Bon Temps (#5) is obviously the horse to beat as she seeks her third stakes victory in a row. This New York-bred daughter of Laoban will take her earnings over $500k if she wins this race, as she took advantage of some lucrative purses late last year. Yet she’s making her first start off a private purchase and trainer switch to Linda Rice. She’s also a bit of a “one fig” wonder, as the career-best 103 TimeformUS Speed Figure she earned in winning the Maid of the Mist really stands out from her other races. Even a repeat of her last effort might make her good enough to beat this field, but she’s not the kind of horse I want to take at a short price. Her main rival appears to be I’mhavingamoment (#6), who stretches out to a mile off her 7-furlong debut win in late December. She took all the money that day, getting bet down to even-money in her debut for Bill Mott. This daughter of Uncle Mo finished like one that would handle added ground, but she is a half-sister to a few horses who were best over sprint distances. Furthermore, Bill Mott is just 2 for 26 (8%, $1.11 ROI) with last-out debut winners on dirt over 5 years. My top pick is the other Linda Rice runner, Starry Midnight (#4). This filly obviously has some maturing to do, as she has raced unprofessionally in both starts so far. Yet there is obviously some talent here. She ran much better than the narrow margin of victory would indicate on debut when closing from far back after climbing through the early stages, reacting badly to kickback. She again failed to settle on the backstretch in her second start, and then was unable to launch an effective rally when racing wide against a rail bias. Notably, she drew the inside post in both of those races, and may be able to work out a better trip now that she’s drawn farther outside. She’s not supposed to have any trouble handling a mile, since her siblings were best at route distances.

Raon The Fighter Returns – Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (February 19)

Raon The Fighter, runner-up in the Korea Cup and Grand Prix Stakes and second highest rated horse in Korea after his nemesis, Winner’s Man, kicks off his five-year-old campaign at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday afternoon. He goes around in the very final race of the day at class 1 over 1800M. There are 11 races at Seoul from 10:40 to 18:00 and 6 at Busan from 11:05 to 15:40. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies. (2) ELITE ROYAL will be a warm favourite having been very slow going through the gears on debut but running on for 5th and then an on pace 2nd when stepped up to this distance at start number two on January 15th, beating a few of today’s rivals in the process. She draws nicely here and may tale some beating. (11) DALGEUM has raced fairly across three starts so far. The wide draw shouldn’t be a problem here and the slight step up in trip may suit. (7) DASI TAEEONADO was 4th behind Elite Royal on January 15th, settling midfield and running on. That continued a consistent start to her career that has seen her in the top0five on each occasion, and from a better draw today, she can go closer. (4) SEMYEONG LADY and (3) NAOL SKY others with potential to improve.
Selections (2) Elite Royal (11) Dalgeum (7) Dasi Taeeonado (4) Semyeong Lady
Next Best 3, 6
Fast Start 2, 4, 7, 11

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens and we’ll take a chance on one of the two first-time starters. That’s (9) LEMON DOKKI who after failing to qualify in his first trial last November, looked a much better prospect when running 2nd from off the pace in another in January, stopping the clock in a good time. The 1300M first-up should suit and he can win. (3) COOL RUNNING has a 3rd and two 4th place finishes to his name from three starts so far. That runner-up finish was at this distance in December when leading for much of the way around and from a good draw, he should be on pace again and has solid chances. (5) ROCK POWER was sent off as favourite on debut having won a trial. He ran 4th on his race day bow over 1200M when overcoming gate ten to sit handy. He should have derived benefit from that experience and can be considered for improvement here. (1) NAMYANG BOLT and (6) MORNING FLOW others in the placing frame.
Selections (9) Lemon Dokki (3) Cool Running (5) Rock Power (1) Namyang Bolt

Three-year-old maidens. (7) JANGSAN SPO is favoured. He was sent off as favourite on debut on January 29th having own a trial and though he led, he ultimately ran out of petrol in the home straight and ended up in 5th place. He should have benefitted from that run and is worth another chance today. (2) BAEDARI WANGJA also comes in having been a well beaten favourite in his latest outing over 1300M. Prior to that though he had registered back-to-back 4th place finishes over this distance and that form puts him in in the frame here. (4) AGAPANTHUS ran fairly on debut in December when on pace. He should be showing at the front here and with some natural improvement can be in the finish. (9) RUBY AGAIN has made progress across three starts so far and can continue her upward trajectory today while first-timer (12) BANFF might be worth a chance at an each-way price.
Selections (7) Jangsan Spo (2) Baedari Wangja (4) Agapanthus (9) Ruby Again
Next Best 12, 1

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens with four of the ten racing for the first time. (6) WONDERFUL PHONE will be favourite, having run 2nd and 3rd in her two prior outings at 1000M and 1300M respectively. Both times she has been slowly away and settled back before running on but from a central draw today, she may be a little closer and is the one to beat. Of the first timers, (8) NORTHERN BID is the pick. He went through two trials, winning the second of them on February 4th when settling back and running on, recording a fast time. If he brings that form to the races, he should be right in this. (2) POWER SOUND hasn’t raced since running 2nd on his debut at this distance last September. He looked well though when trialling up last week, stopping the clock in a fast time, and so long as he didn’t leave his race there, should be competitive. (5) GEMIJIN went through the same trial having not raced since an indifferent October debut. She crossed the line just a tenth of a second after Power Sound and can go well here. (3) QUEENS LANDING another in the frame.
Selections (6) Wonderful Phone (8) Northern Bid (2) Power Sound (5) Gemijin
Next Best 3, 9
Fast Start 2, 3, 4, 5

Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

A standard maiden here and based on her debut performance on January 8th, when 2nd over 1300M having led from the gate, (2) HANGAWI SEONMUL should start a hot favourite. She draws well, Antonio remains aboard, and she can lead every step of the way this time against a very ordinary field. (11) BEST PLAN probably has the best chance of stopping her. She was 6th behind Hangawi Seonmul in that January 8th race and has subsequently raced once more, finishing 4th of twelve over 1400M on February 5th. She is yet to breach the top-two in sixteen tries but has plenty of minor money finishes and should be looking for a career-best finish here. The form really does drop off after those two. (6) MOON DUST hinted at potential improvement last start when 6th over 1200M and develop further here. (7) RAON JUMP and (3) MAGIC MOCCASIN, the later at least with a couple of 3rd places to her name, others to consider.
Selections (2) Hangawi Seonmul (11) Best Plan (6) Moon Dust (7) Raon Jump

Three-year-old maiden fillies, all of them imported from the USA. (9) CARPE BABEL is probably the banker favourite of the meeting. She found her debut in the Gyeongnam DoMin Ilbo a bot much too soon but has since finished runner-up in both subsequent starts and crucially has beaten plenty of these in the process. She has been on pace in both of those outings so may be drawn a touch wider than ideal, but she should have too much. (3) ALPHA THOR will be second favourite. She has run 3rd and 5th behind Carpe Babel in her latest two but did beat her when 5th in that DoMin Ilbo Trophy. She comes up 2kg in the weights but should be settling back and running on here. (11) ANOTHER MARINE finished 6th behind Carpe Babel and Alpha Thor on January 27th. That was her debut appearance and while she draws wide again, she can improve. (4) DAINYJI and (5) BABEL SUNSHINE are others to keep safe.
Selections (9) Carpe Babel (3) Alpha Thor (11) Another Marine (4) Dainyji
Next Best 5, 2
Fast Start 6, 8, 9, 11

Seoul Race 4: Class 6 (1400M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

Another standard maiden. (5) GHOST CHARM has really figured out what he is supposed to be doing in his last couple, culminating in a runner-up finish when stepped up to this distance on January 15th, beating three of today’s rivals in the process. He sat midfield and ran on and can aim to do the same again today, this time going one better. (11) BADAUI KKUM enters with recent form reading well. A previous effort at this trip wasn’t great but he has been working home well in his latest efforts and can be a danger late here. (2) FINAL CHUKJE has finished in 5th place in three of his four outings to date. He comes up to this trip for the first time and it may suit. (9) STAND BY ME and (8) PURPLE STORM the other logical place hopes.
Selections (5) Ghost Charm (11) Badaui Kkum (2) Final Chukje (9) Stand By Me
Next Best 8, 6
Fast Start 2, 4, 7, 9

Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(10) CHANGCHANG DAERO was beaten by a couple of these on his latest start at class and distance on January 15th when settling towards the rear of midfield and running on for 4th. That was his first try at a mile and he should have come on for the experience. Under today’s handicap conditions he comes down in the weights and still looks to have improvement in him. (2) HAMAN BONGHWASAN has run fairly in his latest two, both at class and distance finishing 3rd and 6th. He comes into a better gate today and can be competitive in this company. (1) GREAT MISS comes up to the mile for the first time. She was doing her best work late on when slowly away over 1300M last time out, rattling home at speed for 4th and she may appreciate the step up here. (3) WONDERFUL BOBCAT and (9) DALEHOLRINGWANGDAE among others in the placing frame.

Fillies (and one mare) only here and it’s a competitive race. (11) TIZ INDY shapes as the probable favourite. She is up in class following a maiden win on just her third outing on January 15th when she raced handy and finished off strongly. The draw is not ideal but with a bit of luck at the start, she can find a good position and should measure up. (2) TANSAN who comes up in class having got her maiden win at start number nine on January 15th when settling right back and running on. She comes down in the weights, draws well and Munro climbs aboard so there is plenty to like at what will almost certainly be an each-way price. (9) MAPARAM beat a couple of these over 1200M on January 15th having led for much of the way and ultimately finishing 4th. She’ll be on pace again and can be in this a long way. (10) HANGANG HERO and (8) GLOBAL PRIME among others in the minor money frame.
Selections (11) Tiz Indy (2) Tansan (9) Maparam (10) Hangang Hero
Next Best 8, 6

Busan Race 5: Class 3 (1800M) Special Weight B / KRW 75 Million

(6) FLYING THE CHAMP has missed the top-three only once in nine prior outings and comes in having won a valuable race this distance just before Christmas before beating three of today’s rivals on his way to 3rd place at class and distance on January 15th. He carries his fair share of weight today but looks firmly in the hunt for another win. (3) WORLD FOUR A comes up in class and is distance following a good score over a mile on January 6th when he sat handy and then ran on. He draws well, carries a light weight, and can measure up in this company. (9) EUNSEONG WINNER is also up in class here following a solid 2nd place over this trip on January 29th. She is very nicely treated by the weights and can be a danger. (12) LUCAS SUN and (1) WIND HIGH others in the placing frame.
Selections (6) Flying The Champ (3) World Four A (9) Eunseong Winner (12) Lucas Sun

Seoul Race 6: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(6) GEUMBITMA will be a strong favourite to score here. He got his maiden win two starts back over this distance when slowly away but then quickly ridden up to join the pace, and then ran 2nd on his first try at this class over 1400M on January 15th. Tactically versatile, he should be too good here. (7) GLOBAL JINGYEOK comes up rapidly in class having been a winner on debut over this distance on January 8th. The time wasn’t fast, but he won cleverly enough and comes down in the weights here. He can measure up. So too (2) EINSPANNER, a debut winner back in December over 1000M making all. She led on her first try at this class at 1300M on January 14th, ultimately weakening but from a good gate and under a light weight, she can be given another chance today. (4) GEOMEUN JILJU has placed at this level and along with (1) STAR RUSH, is another to keep safe.

(4) SEUNGNI MAGICQUEEN and (3) AGAIN TOUCH have almost identical form with five wins apiece from nine starts apiece. There was only a head between them when they raced one another over 1200M in an all-filly and mare race at class 3 level on December 23rd and they look set to duke it out again. This is Seungni Magicqueen’s first start since then – and she was that day returning from eight months out – while Again Touch went on to win herself at class 3 level over that same distance in a fast time on January 13th. They both carry negligible weight here and either could win with Again Touch likely to be favourite as the more match fit. Several of these raced one another at class and distance on January 8th. Most favoured that day was (5) MILLION BANK and while he only managed 6th, the margins weren’t huge, and he is probably worth another chance here. (12) MUJEOK BULPAE led all the way in that race and warrants respect despite the rise in weight and the wide draw. (10) GREAT BOSS, 3rd in that race, another in the frame.
Selections (4) Seungni Magicqueen (3) Again Touch (5) Million Bank (12) Mujeok Bulpae

Seoul Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(8) SHINE ON ME is unbeaten having won her opening two starts in fine style at 1000M and 1200M. That brings her rapidly up in class but she comes down in the weights and in this company, she really should be continuing upon her merry way. (1) DREAM YEOWANG is the second favourite. She has only missed the top-five on one occasion from nine starts to date and enters off a good 4th place at this class over 1400 on January 8th when handy and running on. She is up marginally in the weights without an apprentice claim today, but she should be competitive. The form drops off a bit after that. (11) ARA CHAMP was a winner two starts back over this distance before struggling on her first try at this class up at 1400M in January. The wide draw isn’t an issue as she likes to go back and she may get closer today. (2) CHEONBISEONG and (6) CHALLAN HANNAL are others who are better than their most recent outings suggest.
Selections (8) Shine On Me (1) Dream Yeowang (11) Ara Champ (2) Cheonbiseong

Seoul Race 8: Class 3 (1600M) Special Weight B / KRW 75 Million

(5) TIZ BAROWS ran 4th in the Korean Derby last May but has raced sparingly since. He got back to winning ways in his final outing as a three-year-old, scoring in a valuable race over 1800M on December 18th when, as is his style, sitting midfield and running on. He tackles the mile for the first time but draws well and looks nicely in to win again. (10) BOOSTER ROCKET was a winner over 1400M at class 4 level last October before running 3rd on her first try at this class and distance on January 28th when on pace throughout. The draw is not ideal here but with some luck at the start, she can mount a strong challenge again. (4) TAP QUALITY comes up in class after a gate-to-wire win over 1400M on January 14th. He still carries his fair share of weight but should be competitive in this company. (8) CHOEGANG PARTY and (6) LUCKY WORLD among others with claims.

Fillies and mares only here and an excellent chance for (8) JAY TROSS to get back to winning ways. She has consistently run fast times at this distance and has been up against some stiff competition in recent outings. She likes to settle back and finish strongly and with Moon Se-young aboard today, she will be favourite. (5) COMPLETE ANGEL has won her latest two to get rapidly promoted to this class, leading all the way both times. She comes up to this trip for the first time but she draws well to be on pace again and can be in this a long way. (4) RANUT also comes up in class and distance having overcome the widest gate to get on pace and win over 1200M on Christmas Day. She is nicely weighted and drawn and is another one who can be competitive in this kind of race. (3) YOUNGYOUNG SOCKS is yet another up in class. In her case, she won over this distance on January 15th when settling handy and running on strongly in a good time. A repeat of that performance will put her in the finish again. (11) MENI ACE another up in class and another to keep safe.

(4) THUNDER HORSE doesn’t exactly win out of turn but he has been showing signs in his latest two of being ready to strike again. He comes in follow a 3rd and a 4th both at this class and distance and both times settling midfield and running on. Under today’s handicap conditions, he comes down in the weights and today can be his day. That will mean overturning the form on (8) DEVIL K, who beat Thunder Horse as the pair ran 2nd and 4th respectively at class and distance on January 14th. He too comes down slightly in weight although there is a swing in Thunder Horse’s favour, and he can keep his positive run of form going here. (7) BUL HWASAN was a slightly unexpected class and distance winner on January 8th when coming from well off the pace. The same apprentice coupled with today being a handicap keeps the weight nice and low and a repeat can’t be ruled out. (5) GIANT INDY and (3) FEDERAL KING among other placing hopes.

Next Best 3, 2

Seoul Race 11: Class 1 (1800M) Special Weight B / KRW 110 Million

(8) RAON THE FIGHTER is the second highest rated horse in Korea with only Winner’s Man, who he ran 2nd to in both the Korea Cup and Grand Prix Stakes, on a higher mark, and the highest trained at Seoul. While a trip to Dubai may have been a more productive use of February than this nondescript class 1 affair, it is a prep for a potential rematch with Winner’s Man when the Stayer Series begins in April. After his last run in the Grand Prix Stakes in December, he came back into full work at the start of this month. He gets a new jockey with Lim Gi-won picked to partner him this campaign and while he carries 60kg, more than he has done before, the set weight scale means he doesn’t give away as much weight as he might have done. Today is not the target and he may not be at 100% but he is capable of setting a tempo that the opposition here can’t match, and it would be a big surprise if at 1800M, he was to be beaten. (12) SOUL MERIT perhaps has the best chance of an upset. He was one of plenty of these who raced each other at class and distance on January 8th and while he could only manage 2nd, is worth another chance today. (9) HEUNGROK DAEBU won that race on what was his first try at class 1 and he can go well again. (4) HEUNGHAENG JILJU and (3) MIGHTY WHO others in the minor money hunt.

1st race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (2) Undoubtedly made a big improvement in his second start for Bill Mott when she set the pace and finished fourth and ships up to New York after that Gulfstream Park race. (1) Promiseher America also made significant progress in her second race when she got a second-place finish adding a furlong of distance and will do that again. (6) Avant ran her best race in her 2023 debut for Todd Pletcher when she was just a neck behind the second choice described above. (5) La Grotte will get another chance after fading badly in the race same race as the two fillies in the second and third spots. She missed breaking her maiden by a nose back in December.

Gulfstream Park Hotlist - February 19

Feb. 18, 2023

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman

Hot List Key:

A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race – (6) Blind Eye missed by a neck last time and can make amends here. (4) Luna Warrior has speed and may not look back at this level. (8) Toyi might hang on with softer fractions here. (5) Order of Magnitude looms a late threat. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-8.

4th race – (8) Ranseur had some trouble last time and deserves a second chance here. (6) St Ignacio was second at this level and can make his presence felt. (4) Wave Action might spring into action on Tapeta. (5) Glenholme does his best racing on Tapeta and will welcome the surface switch. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-8.

6th race – (3) Valiant Avenger (D) was bet down from 7-1 to 9-2 and then got off to an awkward start and rallied mildly for fourth. May take a step forward here while returning to Tapeta. (6) Regal Speaker could wake up while moving over to Tapeta. (4) Digital Software will be a factor in the final furlong with his late speed. (5) My Man Flint has been no worse than third in his last four starts and can be a contender here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5-6. Doubles: 3-4-5-6 with 1-2-4-5.

7th race – (2) I’m a Sure Thing had some trouble when an improved third last time from post 11. Should turn in an even better effort from an inside post here. (1) Doral missed by a neck in her debut and should be the one to fear. (4) Skyview Drive moves over from Tampa and cannot be overlooked. (5) Way too Early had trouble last time and can make her presence felt here. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-5.

9th race – (5) Kanthari (A) got away to a rough start but still won his debut. Can make it two in a row here. (7) Biz Biz Buzz is in sharp form and will be a force here. (9) Axthelm is worth a look while cutting back to a sprint. (4) Hope in Him has a big turn of speed and could be tough to catch. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-7-9.
