Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis April 17, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card featuring action from the final leg of the Borgata Pacing Series. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9

2-Pretty Handsome (6-1)-Proven competitor versus this kind and should benefit from an inside post draw. Stratton returns for the 2nd straight steer and that should help as well.
6-Townline All Good (2-1)-Winner in 4 of the last 5 and two of the pictures came against $50k claimers. Gingras should have the pedal down but also could come off cover, short field doesn't hurt chances. Should be there at the wire as long as there aren't any bad steps.

Race 10

2-Flow With Joe (7/2)-Gets some class relief and versus this kind the plan might be to get the top and play catch me if you can.
4-Kerford Road A (7-1)-This is 2nd time Lasix, gets Brennan back in the bike and he is the regular pilot. Raced from the back last time, came 4th, and now steps up. Should be a price and did pace the 2nd half in 56.2.
6-BB Lucky Boy (3-1)-Hasn't connected for a win this year (0-5) but has won 4 of 8 here and this was Stratton's choice. It could be a drop and pop situation if lands in a good seat off the gate.

Race 11

2-Twin B Heart Throb (3-1)-Gets needed post relief and that makes this Cullipher pupil a threat to take honors. The 5-year-old is versatile and has hit the board in 7 of 10 at Yonkers with 2 wins.
6-Peace Out Posse (4-1)-Has had some issues, a Judges Scratch and then broke stride. But stayed flat in last and had a big try from post 8 to finish 3rd at this level. Does have good gate speed to get a close-up seat and is a player if problems have been resolved.

Race 12

6-Semi Tough (5/2)-Sprinted out to a .55 opening half last week and held safe to the wire. Steps up but this 7-year-old can string them together and has plenty of back class.
7-Ballerat Boomerang (8-1)-Makes the 2nd start for Di Domenico and the last try wasn't bad at all. This post draw is a challenge but that's why he is at 8-1 in the morning line. If the pace is lively Brennan could work a stalking trip and be there at the wire.

$1.00 Late Pick 4

2,6/2,4,6/2,6/6,7
Total Bet=$24

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Will Rogers Downs - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#2 Euro Surprise
Dropper was tough when in for a claiming price at Remington last season, so this class relief really gives him a chance to find a bit more, and he might land a pretty nice trip spying the splits.

#9 Headedtothestars
Forward player was sharp here off the little break last out, and he's obviously a good fit with this kind of company. Worry he might get bet a bit.

#6 Ronald Dale
He wasn't too far off similar a couple starts back, and I wonder if he can bounce back with something a bit better and turn some tables out of that last one at a price.

Race Summary
Euro Surprise looks like one of the obvious ones, and I think this group is going to be a bit more to his liking at this point in time after those recent tries with open allowance company. Think he'll take some action, so I'd just single and likely not play within the race.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#2 Aquila Moon
Think there is a chance the pace is fair enough to set things up for a run from a bit off the pace, and this one might offer a playable price while getting the class test.

#1 Ragan's Jet
She just handled some of these here last month, but I worry that she's also meeting some potential new faces who want to be near the splits, and her form gives the impression she won't have much choice but to go for it from the fence.

#6 Dicey
She's got enough positional pace to get first jump on anything finishing from the back, but she can settle off the splits and let things unfold in front of her. Wouldn't surprise to see her make amends for the even-money loss last out.

Race Summary
Aquila Moon is a pretty honest finisher, and I think the splits might be contested enough to leave some of those involved tired late.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #9

Picks
Notes

#9 Gospel Bonanza
He draws well to let things unfold and try to avoid early trouble, and the barn has done ok work with this type of sprinting maiden here over the last few years. Get a look at him on the track and tote, but I think he might be live.

#4 Oklahoma Moon
Not totally sold on the strength of those who have experience in this group, and he's another who debuts out of a barn that has been solid with similar types.

#7 Captain Dozer
I guess he's the one to beat in here, and it really wouldn't be any surprise to see him flash some pace and cruise home today, but he has given away ground in the stretch call of all six career races, and you're probably going to be sitting here at a short price to find out if that won't be the case again today.

Race Summary
Gospel Bonanza and Oklahoma Moon both debut in this spot where Captain Dozer is the likely chalk, but I don't trust that guy late, and I think either of those firsters might be capable of landing this out of the box.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Parx - Race #1

Picks
Notes

#7 FIVE STAR FRAN (2-1)
Takes some catching on class drop, today’s Best Bet.

#2 OVERTHEBLUESKY (9-2)
Rallied from far back to pass the pace-setting fave and run second at 6F.

#3 LEAPING FOR CANDY (4-1)
Piled up the checks at various distances, tries 7F for the first time.

Race Summary
FIVE STAR FRAN chased the 3-to-5 favorite two starts back and held third at this distance, then she dueled and met the same result on the cutback to 5-1/2F. She holds a decided tactical advantage on the class drop and could go non-stop up front. Bet to win and place.

Parx - Race #6

Picks
Notes

#4 HEART LIGHT (5-1)
Eventful trip in latest, steps up off the claim, pair of 5F works to get ready.

#6 DYSFUNCTIONAL (7-2)
Good try but couldn’t reach the 6-to-5 favorite from post 11, gets class relief.

#3 SKERRETT (6-1)
Can put her speed to good use at maiden-breaking distance.

Race Summary
HEART LIGHT backed off the pace early, made a 4-wide middle move on the final turn, then was in tight in early stretch as the beaten favorite. She could be well-suited to this distance for her new barn. Bet to win and place.

Parx - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#3 LORD OF THE NAVY (5-1)
Set pace in turf route at Saratoga, comeback works are encouraging.

#6 CAPITAL CONQUEST (5-2)
Marked improvement as a gelding and with Lasix.

#5 STREET LIGHTNING (4-1)
Pair of 1:01-4/5 gate moves at Laurel for barn that gets ‘em ready.

Race Summary
LORD OF THE NAVY opened a clear lead and back-pedaled in her fall debut on the Saratoga turf. The race winner, I’m Very Busy, was a troubled second as the odds-on favorite in the Grade II Pilgrim Stakes next out. He showed no published workouts for six months but appears ready now for his second start. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5-6 exacta box.

# 6 SCANDALISSIMO 5/1

# 1 RUFFY 9/2

# 5 RYAN'S FLEET 6/1

SCANDALISSIMO has a formidable shot to take this race. Dominguez has a strong 25 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. Tough to pass on this colt with Sanchez in the irons. RUFFY - This pony has some longshot handicapping angles going for him. Expect a much stronger performance with the drop. RYAN'S FLEET - This equine has a very good win percent in dirt sprints.

#2 GOSPEL FABULOUS (ML=9/5)
#5 TOSH (ML=4/1)

GOSPEL FABULOUS - Rode this racer on March 27th and Pusac is right back in the irons this time. This filly is in good condition, having run a good race on March 27th, finishing second. You have to be keen on that recent race fig, 57, which is the best recent race fig of this field. I like this horse. Finished in front of today's morning-line favorite last out at Will Rogers Downs, and I think she will do well versus this field today. TOSH - Faces state bred foes today after finishing fourth versus 'open' company on Mar 21st. Ran a less than stellar race at Will Rogers Downs in the last race. Racing without a sloppy track puts this filly at the top of my contenders roll call.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MISS LONG LEGS (ML=7/5), #3 MS. MORENA (ML=5/1), #1 GRAY PEARL (ML=8/1),

MISS LONG LEGS - Just don't believe she is priced right at the morning line odds. MS. MORENA - You always figure that this animal has a shot to be victorious, but she falters regularly. Hard to bet on at 5/1 odds after the two most recent outings. GRAY PEARL - Ran her best speed figure last out, but the 'off conditions' may have had something to do with it. Most unsatisfactory speed rating last race out at Remington Park at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this vulnerable equine will improve too much today.

#2 GOSPEL FABULOUS is the play if we get odds of 8/5 or better

#4 AMERICA'S PRIDE (ML=5/1)
#1 DELIGHTFUL DREAMER (ML=4/1)

AMERICA'S PRIDE - Shows a classic conditioning maneuver. Routing today after two sprint races. Last race at Parx Racing on March 29th was a big class drop for this animal. Facing similar foes in this race. She should do well this time. This horse earns a lot of money per race. I believe she can augment the lifetime total in this event. DELIGHTFUL DREAMER - Faced tougher last time out at Penn National. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker field, so I will put this one on my list of contenders in this race. When a pony drops at least 5 lbs (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but should be helpful.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CHARLYS WILD ANGEL (ML=3/1), #8 QUEEN LUCKY (ML=9/2), #5 NANA'S BOOPA (ML=6/1),

CHARLYS WILD ANGEL - A bit of a less than stellar try when this filly finished sixth. Hard to put your cash on the win end of any thoroughbred that finishes second and third as often as this thoroughbred does. QUEEN LUCKY - 9/2 odds isn't enough for this entrant when examining the most recent outings. This horse likes to hit the board, but doesn't usually finish first. Don't put in the top spot. NANA'S BOOPA - 6/1 odds isn't enough for this entrant when examining the most recent outings. Not probable that the speed fig she registered on Mar 29th will be enough in this event.

https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - AMERICA'S PRIDE - At first glance the last affair doesn't look that good, but upon further inspection that race fits right with this field.

# 1 FULL OF LIFE 5/1

# 7 DESTINY ONE 3/1

# 2 MUSICAL GEM 8/1

I've got to go with FULL OF LIFE. Will almost certainly go to the lead and should never look back. Had one of the most favorable speed figures of this group in his last contest. Has a very strong shot for this race if you like back class. DESTINY ONE - This gelding is a solid contender based on his earnings per start in dirt sprint races. May best this group of horses in this race here, showing quite good figs of late. MUSICAL GEM - Garnered a sound Equibase Speed Figure in the latest race. Can run another good one in this affair.
