Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 5 Analysis April 28, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
This is closing night at Cal Expo so there will be mandatory payouts. The 0.20 Pick 5 kicks-off the 8-race card. The sequence has a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 1
5-Peanutbettornjelly (3-1)-This will be the 3rd start off the bench, raced on the point in last and faded in the late going. The race is a real taffy pull and will fade the tepid program chalk #7. This mare faces younger and could seal the deal tonight.
6-The Last Waltz (10-1)-Came off a sick scratch and cashed a 3rd place check just besting the one above. That wasn't a bad effort and could be better in this spot at a decent price.
8-Mightyman (9/2)-Was bet down in last and made-up ground down the stretch to just get up at the wire. The 4-year-old is only 1-17 but could challenge again with a good steer and should offer a fair price.
9-Bollinger (5-1)-Plano will be back with his 2nd straight steer and that could help. Was beaten in the late going by the one above. The 0-22 record is cause for pause but can compete here and should be a better price than last time as well. Could land in a good early seat and look to roll by down the lane
Race 2
5-Three Grand (1/2)-Should be able to beat this crew, was used early in last and didn't have enough pop down the lane. Did finish willingly and drops in with others who are winless in 2023. Hopefully, Mullet provides a good steer and doesn't step on the gas too hard early on. Short field should help, and no excuses allowed.
Race 3
3-Handsome Harvey (8/5)-Has been racing well and his nemesis Officer Jim is not in this field. Plano should be on the point at the top of the stretch or within reach of the leaders. Closed in .27 after racing near the top in a 150.4 mile, and with a clean trip Harvey should have his way with this crew.
Race 4
4-Down On It (8-1)-Needs the perfect trip to win but at this price is worth a swing as Kennedy could provide a sharp steer. Has hit the board in 10 of 14 races here and should be in the hunt at the wire.
6-Johnny Ringo (5/2)-Plano sticks looking for another picture after beating similar last week. This Tremblay trainee has been in sharp form over the last month. Will look for another top effort and has the gate speed to land on the point or in the 2-hole off the gate.
Race 5
1-Princessofthedawn (2-1)-Plano made it look like the freshman were playing the seniors last week as this gal drew off by 6 lengths. Could use another well-timed move and double up at a small price.
2-Senga Nightmare (5/2)-Was no match for the one above last time but was used twice during the 1st quarter to land on the point. Went off at 1/5 and Grundy drove this mare aggressively and that took its toll down the lane. This time, may look for a cozy pocket trip like Plano had, and then get some revenge down the lane at a much better price.

Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play
__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Katerini
Backups/savers: 4-Travel Smart
Forecast: Katerini returns to sprinting and drops to a realistic spot in this restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claiming extended grass dash for fillies and mares. A repeat of her fast maiden claiming score over the local lawn three races back would be good enough to win, especially with a projected pace stalking trip that she should enjoy. We like her on top but will also include in our rolling exotics Travel Smart , waiver protected in her first start since last July for a barn that has solid stats with comebackers and with good previous form over the Santa Anita turf course.
*
RACE 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Lulu Lemon Drop; 6-Side By Side
Backups/savers: none.
Forecast: This maiden optional claiming main track sprint for older fillies and mares came up unusually soft. Lulu Lemon Drop has had a couple of runs facing much stronger open maiden competition on grass and should find this group well within her capabilities. She displayed excellent speed before weakening in her debut in a hot race last month and then finished an even sixth after a slow start in her most recent outing in another fast affair that produced a better than par speed figure for this level. If she can duplicate that form on dirt, the Peter Miller-trained sophomore filly should be able to handle this assignment under top jockey Juan Hernandez. Side By Side is another returning to dirt and dropping in class, and if she can run back to her best race last summer at Del Mar (second in a maiden $50,000 affair) she’ll be a major contender throughout. These are the two we’ll be using in our rolling exotics, with preference on top to Lulu Lemon Drop.
*
RACE 3: Post: 1:59 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Meckleburg
Backups/savers: 2-Hudson Ridge
Forecast: Mecklenburg surely will inherit the role as the controlling speed from his inside post in this turf miler for $40,000 claiming older horses, and at this level following a significant drop in class the Irish-bred gelding should be hard to catch. He’s won over this course and distance at this level in the past, so the Jeff Mullins-trained veteran seems the solid pick. Hudson Ridge was once a decent prospect but has been winless since June of 2021, so this drop into a seller is warranted and, in fact, long overdue. On pure numbers he’s a fit, and both of his career victories were accomplished over the local lawn, but he’s always been a one-paced grinder and not one to trust. We’ll toss him on a ticket or two as a backup, while preferring Mecklenburg on top.
*
RACE 4: Post: 2:29 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Sonofinch; 1-Divine Rascal
Backups/Savers: none.
Forecast: Away since last June and plummeting to the $16,000 level in his start for a tag, Sonofafinch must have issues, but if he shows up with anything close to his best the lightly raced gelding should outrun this modest group. This will be his first try on conventional dirt but there shouldn’t be any reason why the Jonathan Wong-trained Bay area shipper won’t handle the surface. The work tab, while not flashy, should have him plenty fit for a stable that hits a respectable 18% with returnees, and last year he came off a similar layoff to win, so we know he can fire fresh. Divine Rascal projects to display good speed from his rail post and is a “must use” on your ticket based on his solid runner-up effort in a similar spot two runs back. The Jorge Periban-trained gelding was pitched too high in his first start off the claim last time out but seems likely to return to good form today. Preference on top goes to Sonofafinch but both should be included in rolling exotic play.
*
RACE 5: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Grand Tiger; 9-Barely Functional
Backups/savers: none.
Forecast: With eight of the 10 likely starters in this state-bred turf sprint making their racing debuts without the benefit of a single breeze on turf, this race is borderline inscrutable. Grand Tiger finally makes it to the post at age four, so he’s clearly had his share of problems, but the son of Smiling Tiger has displayed an immense amount of speed in his most recent series of drills and could wind up being something in a nothing race. If he leaves cleanly from the gate, he’s likely to be the quickest of the quick. Barely Functional has the benefit of two prior outings and produced an excellent debut performance over the local turf course when second in a fast, highly rated sprint won by the talented Boss Sully last month. Badly overmatched in the Echo Eddie Stakes on dirt in his next outing, the son of Mrazek returns to reality, and if that poor experience three weeks ago didn’t mess him up, the Antonio Garcia-trained sophomore will be a strong factor throughout. Both should be included in rolling exotic play, with preference on top to Grand Tiger.
*
RACE 6: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Nickel Nickel Nine; 6-Don’ttestyourluck; 10-Buck Owens
Backups/savers: none.
Forecast: Anything goes in this bottom-rung maiden $20,000 claimer over a mile on the main track for older horses. Best advice is to use as many as your budget allows; small ticket players can consider the three runners listed above. Nickel Nickel Nine was a $12,500 claim at Golden Gate Fields two weeks ago and vans down to try his luck on this circuit for new trainer Jonathan Wong, who boasts a powerful 28% with this angle. On pure numbers, he’s highly competitive despite the change in venue and raise in claiming price, and from the rail the 15-race maiden should have every chance to take full advantage of a ground-saving trip. Donttestyourluck just finished a close second in a similar affair earlier this month and anything close that type of performance should make him the one to beat. His speed figure, a career top, was solid for the level. Buck Owens must overcome the 10 hole but this sharp drop in class could be the ticket for a considerable forward move. He makes a pivotal switch to leading rider Juan Hernandez and likely will drop back early and then take hold from the quarter pole home.
*
RACE 7: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Eleuthera; 6-True Patriot; 5-Golden Again
Backups/savers: none.
Forecast: Here’s another messy affair, this one a first-level state-bred allowance turf miler for fillies and mares. Eleuthera has been knocking on the door at this level and shows a prior win over this course and distance when beating maidens last year. She’s been sparingly raced of late but off her best effort the daughter of Square Eddie looks good enough to handle this group. True Patriot has solid form at this level over the local lawn and really won’t have to improve much to win. She’s a bit one-paced to truly trust, but with the switch to top rider Juan Hernandez she must be considered a major player. Golden Again was more than three lengths clear or the rest when a good runner-up under these conditions in late March. She’s relatively lightly raced (just eight starts) and may have a bit more improvement in her.
*
RACE 8: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): Eda; 4-Teddy’s Barino
Backups/savers: none.
Forecast: She has won off layoffs twice in the past (including her debut), so we’re going to assume that Eda is fit and ready to return a winner in this open allowance sprint for older fillies and mares. The daughter of Munnings is a Grade-1 winner seeking her fifth straight victory, and her recent work tab indicates she has retained all of her speed. The rail is no bargain but if she leaves cleanly the Bob Baffert-trained four-year-old should be able to secure a decent ground-saving position and then have her chance when the pressure is turned on. Teddy’s Barino doesn’t have the resume that our top pick owns but she actually has faster speed figures and always has been thoroughly genuine and consistent, with six wins from 10 career starts. Effective at any distance, the daughter of Grazen got away with crawling splits in her most recent win but she can turn on the jets when necessary and projects to be on or near the lead throughout. We’ll give Eda the slight edge on top but include both in our rolling exotics.
*
RACE 9: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Battle Call
Backups/savers: none
Forecast: Battle Call, claimed out of his first start last year for $75,000 by his present connections, makes his first start in more than a year in this extended turf sprint and has trained quite well for his comeback while taking the critical class drop from straight maiden (at Oaklawn Park) to maiden $50,000 claiming. The John Sadler-trained four-year-old also is a first-time gelding and has two-turn speed figures from last year that should be more than sufficient to win this race. Furthermore, as a son of Hard Spun, he should actually be better on grass than dirt, and perhaps better sprinting than routing, too, so it all adds up to a win play and rolling exotic single.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Keeneland - Race #6
Picks
Notes
#8 Sahlabiya
She's probably going to take some cash here, but she chased a good winner last out who came back to beat allowance company here this meet, and I think she'll hit hard in this spot.
#12 Tawaret
She didn't have the easiest of runs overall in her debut try at Gulfstream last month, but she has some upside with that race under her belt, and I wouldn't be shocked to see her move up a bit today.
#5 Determined Gold
She underachieved toward the end of her campaign last season, but she ran the best race of her career over the local turf course and might be able to fire a fresh shot today.
Race Summary
Sahlabiya owns pretty solid turf form and has some room to step forward in the second start off the bench with a flattering running line on her page last out. Look out.
Keeneland - Race #7
Picks
Notes
#9 Mo Hope
Price player has a little bit of hope at this elongated sprint trip, and he's coming back out of a maiden race I really liked back in January. Overlooked in what feels like a really good race for the level?
#3 Castlewarden
Wouldn't be any surprise to see him roll this group after turning in a sharp debut run last month at Fair Grounds, but I worry he's overbet while facing some decent company today.
#1 Run for Reagan
Think there may still be a little upside here after an effort behind a runaway winner who was coming out of a really tough Fair Grounds special weight. Wouldn't be surprised to see him make some noise today if he behaves a bit better before the race.
Race Summary
Mo Hope still needs better in what really feels like a deep spot, but I like what he has done so far and think his form might just a touch better than it looks at first glance. One of the more appealing price swings of the week for me.
Keeneland - Race #10
Picks
Notes
#9 Itzos
He gets the slight edge in the finale as he gets Lasix and tries turf for the first time, and he took a little step forward last time out when making his second stakes start. Think the class relief gives him a claim on this.
#7 Dunedin
Finisher got around two turns for the first time pretty nicely last time out, and he was racing off a six-month break in that one. Think he's a real danger here with some logical improvement second off the break.
#3 Turf King
He turned in a really nice debut effort at Gulfstream, and he should be in line for a really good spying trip while he lets the speedier players sort themselves out. He was flattered by Pletcher's #8 Fearless Soldier who was right back to graduate after being fourth behind this guy on debut. Overbet and capable?
Race Summary
Really fun race to close out the meet, and I went back and forth between about six or seven of them along the way. #11 Wico, #6 Laver, and #5 More Than Looks all seem worth a look. I like that the barn kept him in stakes company last out despite the flat two-back run, and he rewarded them with an improved try. Lasix helps him get over the top today?

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Golden Gate - Race #5
Picks
Notes
#7 HOT CHICKS ONLY (9-2)
Took the money and ran to visually strong debut sprint victory.
#5 CHUCKANUT BAY (5-1)
Earned $60k as 2yo, rallied from far back for third in seasonal debut.
#3 IRISH ROYALTY (7-2)
Held on to become second two-race winner in field, claimed by France.
Race Summary
HOT CHICKS ONLY “displayed a good turn of foot” when rallying 4-wide on the turn, led in early stretch, then held off the fast-closing favorite to prevail in his first start. He can do it again for a barn in the midst of a 9-for-42 run with repeat winners. Bet to win and place.
Golden Gate - Race #6
Picks
Notes
#4 AUSTRIAN NAVY (4-1)
In top form, unproven on lawn like most of field.
#7 MAGICAL LADY (5-1)
Horror trip in latest, still ran third, enters new barn.
#5 DANCING CRANE (10-1)
Poor recent form but 9/2-3-2 turf mark looks good against 0-19 rivals.
Race Summary
AUSTRIAN NAVY tracked a fast pace and was out-kicked in her bid for four wins in a row. But her current form suggests she handle the transition to the grass better than her 0-3 record indicates. Bet to win and place.
Golden Gate - Race #7
Picks
Notes
#1 SERIOUS SECRET (10-1)
Rewarded loyal backers in third start, longshot play today on class rise.
#4 MATCHLESS (5-2)
Rallied to win 3 of her last 5 starts, projects similar trip today.
#6 YODERANDO (8-1)
Back with own kind, must correct slow-starting habit that is forming.
Race Summary
SERIOUS SECRET found the class drop to her liking, wiring a field of bottom-level maidens at 6F. But she set a faster half-mile pace than a MSW and $5,000/nw2 sprint on the same day, earning a playback at 10-1 on the morning line. Play a 1-ALL exacta and bet to win and place.

Aqueduct Hotlist - April 28
Apr. 27, 2023
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race [Md 40000, 7F] – (3) Dolce Sera was second in a maiden special weight two races back at the seven-furlong distance and now drops into this maiden claimer. (2) Balentina is projected to be on the lead, gets blinkers on for the first time, and tries the claiming ranks in her third start. (7) Herecomes Scarlett tried the turf last time, did not run well, and returns to the main track where she was second at this level. (1) Nobleandgreenough will make her debut for the hot barn of Rob Atras who is winning at a 29% clip this year.
2nd race [NY, OC 45k/N2X, 6F TURF] – (3) Moonage Daydream broke her maiden last year against NY-breds, won an open company stakes, and debuted this year in a Grade 3 at Gulfstream Park. She will get first-time Lasix in this return to state-bred racing. (2) Derrynane was stakes-placed several times last year and now makes her first start of the year. (6) Road to Remember lost by a head at this level in November and now makes her 2023 debut. (4) Shinfull has been racing during the winter and gets back to her preferred surface on the grass.
3rd race [OC50k/SAL50k, 7F] – (3) Maggie T won at this level going a mile in her first start after getting claimed by Linda Rice. (6) Attached was last seen in September winning a $40,000 maiden claimer in the first start of her career. (2) Blowthruyelowlites ships up from Laurel Park after winning a $20,000 open claimer. Trainer Brittany Russell does well in New York and now that the Maryland track is temporarily closed, she may send horses to Aqueduct more often. (5) Aeron Warrior broke his maiden for a $40,000 tag by more than 10 lengths.
4th race [Clm 30000 N2L, 1 1/6 mi TURF] – (4) Smokin’ Hot Kitty broke her maiden on the turf last year at Saratoga for a $40,000 tag and then was second in a spot similar to this race. After two allowance efforts she drops back down. (3) Snow Loves a Fight missed a win by a neck in her first start of the year at Gulfstream for $20,000. (6) Always Laughing was second by a nose in her only turf race and since then has three excellent performances on the Tapeta at Turfway Park. (5) Anileate broke her maiden for $40,000 at Laurel last fall and moves back to the grass.
Best bets: Moonage Daydream (2nd); Smokin Hot Kitty (4th). Best value: Dolce Sera (1st); Maggie T (3rd).

1st race – (5) Huntleigh should get a nice set-up in a race loaded with speed. (3) Tituba will appreciate a return to turf. (4) Flamand might handle the stretchout to two turns. (2) Need Some Money might provide just that in this field. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5. Exactas: 3-5 with 2-4 and 2-4 with 3-5. Doubles: 3-5-6-8 with 1-2-7-12.
2nd race – (1) Bundchen seems ideally placed in this turf spot by Ward. (2) Beyond Oscar has a nice pedigree for turf. (7) Hollywoodboulevard should handle the switch to turf. (12) American Tsunami is worth a look in this field. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-12.
5th race – (3) We the People moves to Pletcher’s barn and seems set for a big effort. (2) Business Model exits a stakes and should be a main threat. (1) Dash Attack will be closing from the rail. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3. Doubles: 1-2-3 with 2-4-5-8.
6th race – (8) Sahlabiya (C) dropped from 3-1 to 2-1 and wound up second. Makes amends here. (4) Camelot Beauty flopped in her debut but should welcome a race on turf. (5) Determined Gold returns from a layoff and could make her presence felt. (2) Chiromante can be a threat in this spot. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-8.
10th race – (3) Turf King won his debut on Tapeta and should move forward on turf. (7) Dunedin was third in a stakes and will be main contender here. (8) Fearless Soldier won his debut at Gulfstream and cannot be overlooked. (2) Midnight Rising could sneak into the picture at the end. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-7-8.

# 5 PERSONAL BEST 3/1
# 4 WAR LIKE GODDESS 3/5
# 6 SOPRAN BASILEA (IRE) 8/1
PERSONAL BEST looks respectable to best this field. Has to be used in the exotic wagers. Strong average speed figures in turf route races make this horse a solid choice. Recently Ortiz has been sizzling which may give the edge to this filly. WAR LIKE GODDESS - Her 101 average has this mare with among the top Equibase Speed Figures in this race. Ought to be carefully examined in this event if only for the quite good Equibase speed fig put up in the last contest. SOPRAN BASILEA (IRE) - Her 97 average has this mare with among the top Speed Figures for this event. When Motion uses Saez there's a good chance for sizeable profits.

#6 PAPA KATZ (ML=8/1)
#3 CAPTURETHELAUGHTER (ML=5/1)
#4 COURAGEOUS COPPER (ML=9/2)
#1 UNDALAY (ML=3/1)
PAPA KATZ - Pimentel rode this mount for the initial time last time out and comes right back this time around. I like to play this angle, a campaigner coming back off a good race within the last month or so. CAPTURETHELAUGHTER - Have to give this gelding a shot. Ran a nice outing last time around the track within the last thirty days. COURAGEOUS COPPER - Coming off a fourth place finish at Gulfstream Park, some may skip this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has respectable odds today. A strong handicapping angle is first-time Lasix. Lightner gives it to this one for this clash. UNDALAY - This speedball is cutting back in distance today. Should increase his chances of winning. This thoroughbred coming off a nice contest in the last month or so is a serious competitor in my humble opinion. Is ranked uppermost in earnings per race entered. A dominant try in this event will boost that bankroll. This colt's last speed fig earned on Apr 16th is tops in last race speed ratings.
Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BADBADBOBBY (ML=7/2), #5 GLORIOUS BUSINESS (ML=4/1), #7 MORETHANICANHANDLE (ML=8/1),
BADBADBOBBY - Hard to take this steed at these odds after the finish (fifth) in the last affair. This gelding garnered a speed figure in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. GLORIOUS BUSINESS - No good results for this entrant in a short distance race over the last 60 days tells me that this colt is in a thorny spot MORETHANICANHANDLE - Hasn't been close at all lately. Finished fifth in his most recent effort with a mediocre speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch.
https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - CAPTURETHELAUGHTER - Watch out for this horse. My data would suggest that he will sit chilly for most of the race, then with a slight urging from Morales, will take the lead coming home.

# 6 COLONEL BOWMAN 2/1
# 1 MARTINKELLY 5/1
# 5 GRAB THE GOLD 9/2
I give the nod to COLONEL BOWMAN here. Is difficult not to examine based on speed figures which have been very good - 88 avg - of late. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding. Ought to be given a shot in here if only for the formidable speed figure recorded in the last contest. MARTINKELLY - Should be given a shot for this race if only for the decent speed fig garnered in the last outing. GRAB THE GOLD - With Aguilar aboard him, this gelding will almost certainly be able to break out early for this event. Earned a solid Equibase speed fig last time out.

#6 DELTA MOON (ML=7/2)
DELTA MOON - Chleborad drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more data to think this horse should run well at this level. This thoroughbred coming off a sharp try in the last 30 days is a contender in my opinion.
Vulnerable Contenders: #2 RUNNINTHESTREETS (ML=5/2), #7 MAGNOLIA MAE (ML=9/2), #9 CASHMERE BABY (ML=8/1),
RUNNINTHESTREETS - Hasn't been on the Oaklawn Park oval in the last 3 weeks. Cause for some concern. MAGNOLIA MAE - Tough to like the downward spiraling flow (54/49/39) of speed ratings. Hasn't been close to winning at all lately. CASHMERE BABY - Improbable for this entrant to do much running with no recent success in a sprint event. Hard to take this runner at the odds after the finish (seventh) in the last race. Will be hard for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the questionable contenders list.
https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - DELTA MOON - Has been racing regularly since a layoff. According to my calculations, horses hit their peak cycle in their 3rd or 4th race back. Watch out for this animal today.
