__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-Poseidon’s Mist; 6-Awesome Czech; 7-She Takes Cash.
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.
Forecast: The opener is a New York-bred juvenile filly sprint with eight entrants, seven of which are first times starters. In other words, it’s a complete raffle. Poseidon’s Mist is a sneaky shipper from Monmouth Park with a right to win early from a stable that does well with debut runners. The works look decent, and she lands the cozy outside draw, so have a hunch she’ll turn up a live item Awesome Czech shows a healthy series of drills over the Belmont Park training track to indicate she’s plenty fit. Maybe this daughter of Mendelssohn can run some. The same can be said for She Takes Cash, a Street Boss filly with a solid gate work (4f, :47.4bg) earlier this month but from a barn that very rarely wins with a first timer. Best advice is to spread as deeply as your budget allows.
*
RACE 2: Post: 1:44 ET Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Dreamlike
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.
Forecast: Dreamlike is listed as the 3/5 morning line favorite (he’ll go lower) in this maiden router based on his excellent third place finish (beaten a head) in the Wood Memorial S.-G1 in his most recent outing in early April. The Todd Pletcher-trained colt buries this field with a repeat of any one of his first three starts, all of which resulted in in-the-money finishes with powerful speed figures that tower over this field. He’s a clearly a no-value rolling exotic single.
*
RACE 3: Post: 2:20 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-G. Laurie
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Lifelovennlaughter
Forecast: This analysis is for turf only. G Laurie began her career with a dominating maiden score over an outclassed maiden juvenile field at Colonial Downs last summer and was so impressive that she was sent off at 3-1 the following month in the Natalma S.-G1 at Woodbine. Third with traffic trouble through the lane before being beaten less than two lengths, she next ventured to Santa Anita for the 11-runner Blue Norther S. in December, a strong listed affair in which she was sent to the post as the 9/5 favorite. Obviously, something went amiss, and she was eased midway on the turn, after which she was sent home for some rest and recuperation. Today she launches a comeback in this entry-level allowance middle distance turf affair restricted to 3-year-old fillies, and the Graham Motion barn shows outstanding stats with layoff runners. Additionally, the daughter of Oscar Performance won her debut so we know she can fire fresh, and the work tab at Fair Hill looks solid. The first-time Lasix user is listed at 4-1 on the morning line and offers good wagering value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics at or near that price.
*
RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Randomized
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Sacred Wish
Forecast: Randomized bit off more than she could chew in the Acorn S.-G1 and wound up a well-beaten fifth, almost 11 lengths behind top class Pretty Mischievous. She is realistically spotted in the listed Wilton Stakes over a mile, shows a bullet half mile breeze (4f, :48b, fastest of 32) over the Belmont Park main track since raced and beats this field with a repeat of her fast, highly rated maiden win at Aqueduct in late March, though at 7/5 in a five-runner affair she’ll not likely offer a great deal of wagering value.
*
RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Street Rod; 7-Whiskey and Wine; 9-Empire Sky
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.
Forecast: This analysis is for turf or dirt. Street Rod enters this New York-bred maiden special weight turf sprint with two recent bullet drills at Laurel Park, most recently a :47 flat half mile breeze (fastest of 39 for the distance) just six days ago. The War Dancer gelding has the pedigree to handle grass and since there’s not much to excite among the known element, let’s go with a fresh face at 6-1 on the morning line while using two others on our main ticket that contain long shot angles in their chart. Whiskey and Wine could be better than shown, though it requires a leap of faith to get past his first two outings in which he has managed to finish ahead of just one horse while beaten a combined 42 lengths. The More Than Ready colt broke slowly, raced wide and gave out in his debut on dirt and then finished last of 10 when encountering early trouble from a poor draw in open company when facing a serious group that included the extremely talented Carl Speckler. This state-bred group offers no such opposition, so with the turn back to a sprint and bullet recent workout at Monmouth Park (:4f, :48b, fastest of 19) Shug’s colt could easily be a whole lot better than shown. Empire Sky has hit the board in seven of eight starts without yet winning but he figures to at least hit the board and against this group might even break through win a win.
*
RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Shutters; 5-Al’s Rocket
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.
Forecast: This analysis is for turf only. Al’s Rocket looks fairly solid in this first level allowance middle distance inner turf affair event though he’s shown a disturbing habit of wanting to finish second or third (seven times) rather than win (once) in his 12 race career. The Todd Pletcher trained gelding likes to settle in mid-pack and then grind away, and his recent strong speed figures tell us that he’s overdue for another win. But can you trust him? Shutters has numbers that fit very well, and with just six career outings (with three wins) the Mark Hennig-trained gelding has a bit more upside than ‘Rocket. Sparingly raced throughout his career, the 5-year-old son of Get Stormy was off slowly and then lacked a clear path close home when an unlucky fourth in the same race ‘Rocket exits. Not the handiest of sorts and trouble-prone throughout his career, he can win with an aggressive ride from Johnny V. (who got to know him last time out) and a clear path from the quarter pole home.
*
RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-No More Talk
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Towing
Forecast: Old pro No More Talk finished third at 7/5 in a $32,000 seller at Belmont Park 12 days ago and drops 50% in value to the $16,000 level while still remaining above his claim price ($12,500) for trainer David Jacobson. A 14-race winner (with 12 seconds and 12 thirds), the nine-year-old gelding shockingly will be making his first start at the Spa (a bucket list move?) in his 86th career start and is reunited with Irad Ortiz, Jr., who was aboard in victories two and three races back. Let’s hope the son of Not For Love can bounce back, though we wouldn’t take much less than his 2-1 morning line.
*
RACE 8: Post: 5:10 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): Dot’s Dollar; 4-Happy Farm
Backups/Savers/: 3-Cees Get Degrees.
Forecast: This $50,000 main track claiming sprint for older horses has several formidable veterans in the field. Dot’s Dollar is genuine, consistent, solid in the speed figure department, and a perfect one-for-one over the Saratoga main track. After winning his second allowance condition at Belmont Park just six days ago, he is wheeled back on short rest by the always aggressive Linda Rice, so he seems the logical top pick, though at 8/5 on the morning line there really is much we can do with him. Happy Farm, with 13 career wins on his resume, has numbers that fit and could be dangerous on the raise for new connections following a $40,000 claim last month. He’s a two-time winner at the Spa and switches to Flavian Prat, who has gotten excellent run out of him in the past. At 6-1 on the morning line, he’s a gambling number.
*
RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Love Reigns
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.
Forecast: This analysis is for turf only. Love Reigns looked hopelessly beaten at the furlong pole when stuck in heavy traffic in the Limestone Stakes at Keeneland but suddenly got clear and quickened like the top class turf sprinter that she is and was up in time in her seasonal debut in April. Though she passed on a trip to Royal Ascot last month, the work tab looks healthy so we’re expecting another major effort at a short price from the Wesley Ward-trained sophomore. She was a stakes winner with complete authority over this course and distance last year and on pure numbers she is simply too fast for this group.
*
RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 11-Encourage; 3-Hilliard
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Splendid Summer; 12-My Romeo Lima
Forecast: This analysis is for turf only. The nightcap is deep with contention and requires considerable usage in rolling exotic play. Encourage has more room for improvement that most of the others (he’s only raced nine times) and off his best race the Ken McPeek-trained gelding should be a major player. This is his first time in a seller (where he belongs), so if he can negotiate a decent trip from the 11-hole he can spring a mild surprise at 5-1 on the morning line. Hilliard closed against soft fractions when narrowly missing in a similar affair at Belmont Park last month and based on that race may be the one beat, though his 2-for-21 lifetime record and his previous weak form over the Saratoga lawn makes him hard to trust.

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis July 14, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card scheduled. The headliners are Indiana bred 3-year-old fillies competing in Sires Stakes action in Race 11. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 also starts in Race 11, and the sequence will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 11 (9:45 PM EST)
3-Tell's On A Roll (9/2)-At the present time this Tyler George entry is rated behind his other pupil below. Tetrick picked #8 but this gal could be the best tonight. If Rosie gets a tough trip or doesn't fire this filly could get a ground saving drive with this post draw, and surprise.
8-Rollin Rosie (5/2)-The program chalk came the back half in 54.1 to win in the 1st start on Lasix. Should be tough to beat as long as close enough to the leaders turning for the wire. If the fractions are soft there could be a problem.
Race 12 (10:06 PM EST)
1-Madisons Angel (3-1)-Has only made 2 starts since 6-8 but comes back in sequence now. Should get its preferred trip racing near the top of the stack and can be in the mix if 100%.
3-LA Rockin Shania (6-1)-Raced better in last after getting the point off the gate and finished a close 2nd in the 1st start on Lasix. This is a test but if upswing continues a picture isn't out of the question and my thinking is the price could be better than the morning line.
7-Feetmadefordancin (5/2)-Winner of 2 straight, and last week was by far the best. This is a deeper field but has been very tough against this kind and that should be the case again.
Race 13 (10:27 PM EST)
3-Mull Of Kintyre (6-1)-Has missed a month and the qualifier on 7-8 was okay. But came off a sick scratch on 5-5, was bet down versus similar and as a favorite suffered an interference break. This gelding has issues missing time, but it was De Long's choice and should be a player if 100%.
4-Town Gossip (5/2)-Hasn't won since the end of April and keeps dropping looking for a win. Should get a good trip and may have finally met a beatable field.
Race 14 (10:48 Pm EST)
4-Joker Rockwell (3-1)-Takes a meaningful drop in class and is Oosting's choice over the Perry Smith entry #8. This could be picture time if all systems are dialed on high. It should be noted Oosting usually gives preference to the Smith barn.
7-JB Gram (7/2)-This Erv Miller trainee has breaking issues and has only raced twice this year. This is another who should enjoy the company. Tetrick stays loyal, has put in 2 flat lines and could be sitting on a big try.
10-Mayor Ofthemoment (8-1)-Pulled up in a race on 5-1 and hasn't been back since. Normally a horse coming off the bench from post 10 wouldn't jump off the page. But the 7-5 qualifier at HoP in 150.1 with a 52.4 back half did standout. Willing to use at a price in an interesting affair.
0.50 Late Pick 4
3,8/1,3,7/3,4/4,7,10

RACE OF THE WEEK: KELSO STAKES AT SARATOGA 7-15-2023 July 13, 2023 | By Dustin Fabian
THE LEAD:
For the first time since September 2022, we have a Saturday of racing at Saratoga, making this the logical place to go for our Race of the Week focus. At one mile on the turf, the Grade 3 Kelso, formerly the Forbidden Apple, packs the perfect combination of field size and quality. And, as Race 9 (5:45PM ET), it falls right in the middle of the key multi-race sequences (Pick 6, Late Pick 5, Late Pick 4).
FIELD DEPTH:
CASA CREED is a three-time Grade 1 winner and a two-time winner at the ‘Spa,’ making him the logical starting point in discussing this race. He faces fellow Grade 1 winner, ANNAPOLIS, himself 2-for-3 at Saratoga, as well as BIG EVEREST and his own 4-race win streak.
PACE:
From a race shape perspective, BIG EVEREST figures to be a ‘need the lead’ and FILO DI ARIANNA has made the running in four of his last five races. He doesn’t ‘need’ the lead, but he seems to prefer it. Longshot MID DAY IMAGE stretches out from a trio of turf sprints and should ensure a fair setup for both the stalkers (ANNAPOLIS, ENGLISH BEE, ANACONDA) and closers (CASA CREED, ICE CHOCOLAT).
OUR EYES:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.
#1 ENGLISH BEE – Motion/Velazquez – Is 7-for-31 in his career but has just one victory in the last two years and has not smiled for the camera after a stakes race since 2019. He projects a ground-saving trip from an inside draw and has knocked heads against quality runners like Annapolis, Emmanuel, Set Piece, Shirl’s Speight and Get Smokin, but often finds himself lacking a late-race punch. Might be valuable underneath in Tris and Supers, but not for me up top.
#2 ANNAPOLIS – Pletcher/Ortiz Jr. – Won the Grade 1 Turf Mile at Keeneland last fall against Casa Creed and others and the connections have seemingly had Saratoga on their minds since he won his seasonal debut at Churchill in the ungraded Opening Verse on May 4. He bypassed opportunities like the Manhattan and Wise Dan to show up here and you must think Team Pletcher is eyeing a Kelso/Fourstardave Double. He broke his maiden at Saratoga in fine fashion in 2021 and won the Grade 3 Saranac here as a heavy favorite last year.
#3 MID DAY IMAGE – Jacobson/Geroux – Goes sprint-to-route in here and figures to be a pace-player in a deep field. He ran a very strong race at Belmont two back going six furlongs but stretches the extra quarter of a mile here and just not able to envision a scenario where he gets the job done, especially stretching back out.
#4 ICE CHOCOLAT (BRZ) – Casse/Prat – Brazilian-bred has finished first or second in 10-of-16 career races, most of which having come at Woodbine. He did outrun his 63/1 odds when he rallied to finish 6th in the Grade 1 Jaipur, beaten only three lengths, but he’s another that has been doing his recent running in races shorter than this. He hasn’t stretched to a mile in a year and this field simply appears to be too deep.
#5 BIG EVEREST (GB) – Clement/Rosario – Has won six-of-seven races but has never ventured into water this deep before. Trainer Christophe Clement has done an expert job of getting him into the winner’s circle in stakes races at Aqueduct and Monmouth, including the Cliff Hanger last time out, but he’s going to face both inside and outside pace pressure and the closers in this field will be tough to hold off.
#6 FILO DI ARIANNA (BRZ) – Casse/Ortiz – Brings the opposite running style to stablemate Ice Chocolat, making for a potent 1-2 combo for trainer Mark Casse. I loved the race he ran last out in the G3 Poker at Belmont, beating Chez Pierre to the punch and then holding off everyone except for Emmanuel very late. He gets a new pilot today in Jose Ortiz, but clearly this horse’s best efforts have come when allowed to dictate pace on the front-end and you’d hate to see them take that from him on Saturday.
#7 ANACONDA – Sharp/Gaffalione – Was 16/1 when beaten less than a length in the Grade 3 Poker and he has a penchant for running on late to pick up a share of the prize. He has dangerously rounded into form all year for Joe Sharp and seems to be sitting on another competitive performance. He’s missed the Superfecta just twice in 10 starts for this barn and can be viewed as a sneaky add-in on Tris and Supers.
#8 CASA CREED – Mott/Saez – Had his personal two-race win streak in the Grade 1 Jaipur snapped last out by Caravel, but hard to find fault in that effort, off a layoff and from an outside post. Clearly the trip to Saudi Arabia in February didn’t take much out of him and have to think he’s sitting on a good pace scenario favorable to his running style. The outside draw isn’t ideal, but he’s going to drop back anyway, so thinking they attempt to save ground before unleashing his big kick.
#9 GUN IT (MTO) – Rice/Ortiz – It’s Saratoga in July, which means hot and humid and the potential for showers. But for the sake of the racing public, we hope we don’t see this main-track-only entrant on Saturday.
Most Certain Exotics Contender: ANNAPOLIS has missed the Exacta just once in nine starts and that came in the Breeders’ Cup Mile last year. Otherwise, he has been a picture of consistency and has shown the versatility to win races from just about anywhere in the field.
Best Longshot Exotics Contender: If the pace materializes as projected, ANACONDA should find himself with a big chance of finding himself involved late. He may not have the top-end talent of ANNAPOLIS or CASA CREED, but he’s absolutely talented enough to perform at a decent price.
Sending it in ($100 bankroll): $4 Superfecta CASA CREED, ANNAPOLIS / CASA CREED, ANNAPOLIS / ANACONDA, ENGLISH BEE, ICE CHOCOLAT, FILO DI ARIANNA / ANACONDA, ENGLISH BEE, ICE CHOCOLAT, FILO DI ARIANNA ($96); $4 Win ANACONDA ($4)

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Emerald Downs - Race #5
Picks
Notes
#5 Iron Rob
He is one of the few in here with any kind of finishing form, and I'm hoping he'll settle back and let a few of these knock heads early on. Price might be ok.
#3 Zaccheus
He goes for the new team off the pace score last time out, and he seems likely enough to prove best of the forward players. Dangerous pace with his best.
#2 Miso Fast
He has a similar claim on this as the top choice based on running style, but this guy will surely take more cash while dropping in class. Looks like the one to beat.
Race Summary
Hoping a few of these will battle early on to set things up for something from off the pace, and the most appealing price of the potential finishers should be Iron Rob.
Emerald Downs - Race #6
Picks
Notes
#2 Goat Rocks
She might be just a touch cheap for these, but she's probably the most committed pace player in here and might not be out of her league if they don't press her too much early.
#5 Get My Point
Nothing to write home about in the last two, but those were both in stakes company and obviously provided much tougher tests than she's going to find here. Probably a good fit at this level.
#7 Olivia's Choice
Her better stuff keeps her in the mix here, but I'm a little concerned about her running style into what might be a modest kind of pace. Drop might do the trick.
Race Summary
Goat Rocks is not meeting any other serious early pace, and she might be quick enough to scoot clear and find a way to hold to the wire. Think the price will be playable.
Emerald Downs - Race #7
Picks
Notes
#2 Benny the Jet
Hoping for a more tactical trip today for the new team after the dull try last time out, and if that wasn't a sign of overall declining form, he might have some room to bounce back third off the bench.
#6 Anna's Iron Man
Won't be any shock to see this guy close out the night at a short kind of number, as he is probably fast enough to be the leader on the turn and might stick around ok.
#7 Dyf
He has been in with some better groups than he's going to find here, and maybe the easier spot will allow him to snap out of that string of even efforts. He was no match for Anna's Iron Man in their last meeting.
Race Summary
Benny the Jet has some positional pace and should be in a good spot turning for home, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn in an improved effort here for the new team.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Delaware Park - Race #1
Picks
Notes
#1 UNDERDOG (3-1)
Looms a forward factor throughout with an alert break from the rail.
#8 BACKATYA (5-2)
Drifted out in mid-stretch, ran third for $8k, can use speed well from the outside.
#2 CLASSY SOLUTION (8-1)
Won twice with Trejos aboard, adds value to exotic wagers.
Race Summary
UNDERDOG followed the 3-wide move of the winner on the turn and stayed on willingly for third. He’s winless the last two years but will have every chance to end the drought at his best distance. Bet to win and place.
Delaware Park - Race #3
Picks
Notes
#1 SPORTS EDITOR (2-1)
Closed fastest and widest but was DQ’d from route victory, gets Lasix again.
#5 SILVER STYLE (8-1)
‘Dug in’ to finish third behind the faves after five months away.
#2 APRIL FOOLS ANDY (4-1)
Chased and held second in four-horse field as odds-on choice, tries turf.
Race Summary
SPORTS EDITOR blew the first turn, raced wide throughout and still managed to sustain a 6-wide rally to finish first. But he was disqualified from that 1-1/16-mile victory and appears well-suited to today’s 7-1/2F distance. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-5 exacta box.
Delaware Park - Race #7
Picks
Notes
#7 SONIC SPEED (9-2)
Projects ideal trip in speed-laden field, can surpass $100,000 in turf earnings.
#9 HIGHESTDISTINCTION (5-2)
Benefitted from fast pace, bid 3-wide on turn to brief lead, held second.
#5 K’S PICK (5-1)
Can be excused for latest, showed progress on lawn prior, gets blinkers.
Race Summary
SONIC SPEED plays to a steady beat and gets ample pace to rally into in his third start of a cycle. He’s worth a win and place bet at 9-2 on the morning line. Also play a 7/5, 9/ALL trifecta.

COMMENTS: The outside post in the short field filled with speed should be perfect for RANDIMIZED. ACCEDE has speed but can pass horses which will be a plus in this field. UNSUNG MELODY could be the fastest horse in the field which is always a good thing at Saratoga. SACRED WISH will benefit if its a sloppy track.

COMMENTS: LOVE APPEALS liked the short distance last time out and now tries a little shorter. LOVE REIGNS is the only horse in the field with a start over the Saratoga turf and it was a win. BOSSERATI has a shot at a price with the speed from the outside. MY SWEET AFFAIR needs a fast pace and might get it here.

2nd race [Md Sp Wt, 1 1/8 mi] – (3) Dreamlike is still a maiden despite finishing third in the Wood Memorial (G2) where he had the lead in the stretch. He has been off since then and gets Lasix back in this allowance. (2) Mount Craig had the lead and finished second in a maiden race at Churchill Downs in May and has been off since then. He has five top three finishes in his seven career starts. (6) Ride Up had a career high speed figure last time when he finished third for Linda Rice, the Belmont leading trainer. (4) Ocasek has a second and a third in his only two starts for Chad Brown.
6th race [Alw 149,500, 1 1/8 mi TURF] – (7) Shutters (A) came back from a short layoff for Chad Brown, got blocked lacking room, hopped, and finished third a month ago. (1) Danzigwiththestars has two starts this year and made a big improvement in speed figures. All three of his wins were on the turf at Saratoga. (2) Blue Devil had two narrow losses since moving back to the turf in Kentucky. (5) Al’s Rocket has speed figures in his recent starts that make him a win contender for Todd Pletcher.
8th race [Clm 50000, 6F] – (2) Dot’s Dollar won a second-level allowance just a week ago for Linda Rice and has six career wins including one last year at Saratoga in a $50,000 claimer. (3) Cees Get Degrees won an allowance two races back at Pimlico with a front-end effort and is projected to be on the lead in here with Irad on board. (8) Jake Rocks won for $40,000 in April which was his most recent start and was claimed. He won 5 out of his last 6 races in claimers, starter allowances, and allowances. (9) Nifty was claimed for $50,000 in May at Churchill and comes back for the new trainer after winning 3 times in his last 4 starts.
10th race [Clm 35000B, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (3) Hilliard (B) got steadied early in a similar spot and rallied from seventh to get second just a neck from the win. (2) Penner Ash was a winner two races back in $50,000 N2L and then got blinkers on which did not work out well. Blinkers come off and Javier Castellano gets on. (11) Encourage will make a significant drop in class in for a tag for the first time with wins in a maiden special weight and an allowance last year. (4) Arrio used early speed in his first two and only starts of the year and set the pace each time.
Best bets: Dreamlike (2nd); Dot’s Dollar (8th). Best value: Shutters (6th); Hilliard (10th).
