__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Makia; 4-Katherine Thomas
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Makia has trained well enough to win at first asking in a race in which the known element doesn’t inspire. The daughter of Street Sense is bred more for dirt than turf, but the Clement-Rosario always is dangerous, and we suspect this $200,000 Keeneland yearling purchase will turn up a hot item. Katherine Thomas breezed nicely in blinkers under a tight hold – View Workout Video – to prove best in a three horse gate drill eight days ago, and based on the visuals from the video we suspect she will display good speed going long on the grass. The barn rarely wins with first timers, but this one may prove to be the exception to the rule and her morning line of 6-1 represents a bit of a gambling number.

*

RACE 2: Post: 1:46 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Set Sail; 5-Top Secret
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Set Sail has been away for more than a year but returns in a winnable spot for trainer Bill Mott, who hits at a strong 21% with layoff runners. This was a colt that trained like a stakes type for Richard Mandella last year before he ever started, and his maiden win was impressive enough to gain him the favorite’s role at 2-1 in the Peter Pan S.-G3 (he got beat 20 lengths). We’ll put him on top but not with a high degree of trust due to his pattern of inactivity. Top Secret is developing nicely with experience, and in his first try stretching out the son of Uncle Mo could find himself as the controlling speed. His maiden win at Ellis Park was solid, and if he can build on that today the Steve Asmussen-trained colt could step up and win again.

*

RACE 3: Post: 2:25 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Itsakeyper
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Let’s take a stand and single Itsakeyper in this turf sprint for state-bred second level allowance fillies and mares. She’s exiting the claiming ranks and tackling tougher foes, but the daughter of Brilliant Speed is a prototype late-running grass sprinter in peak form and just earned a career top Beyer speed figure in her 35th career start. Not much better will be needed today. There is plenty of speed signed on to compliment her style and she’s won over the course in the past, so at 6-1 on the morning line the seven year old mare is worth a play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

*

RACE 4: Post: 3:00 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): Pass/No Play
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: We’re going to pass this year’s renewal of the Shuvee S.-G2 and just enjoy it. Clairiere has the benefit of recent racing and that may give her a slight edge over track specialist Nest, who makes her seasonable bow on a surface that produced runaway wins last year in both the C.C.A. Oaks-G1 and the Alabama S.-G1. Is she ready off the bench? The works are okay, nothing great. The bottom line is that there’s little wagering value to be found even if you pick a side and wind up being right.

*

RACE 5: Post: 3:33 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Spankhurst; 4-Alcools; 2-Cash Now
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Spankhurst seems as good as any in the fifth race, a $12,500 main track claiming sprint for older horses. Exiting a pair of tougher starter’s allowance races and showing up cheap after being claimed for $32,000 three runs back, the son of Speightster looks very much like he’s being culled from the barn, but even if true that doesn’t mean he can’t outrun this bunch. Freshened since March, the Norm Casse-trained gelding has been carefully campaigned in recent months but against this bunch – his easiest spot ever – he should enjoy the pace flow that calls for moderate early splits. Alcools moves up a level after getting tagged right on the line in a $10,000 seller in the mud last month over a distance of ground at Belmont Park. He’s probably most comfortable sprinting so we’re expecting the Bruce Levine-trained gelding to be prominent throughout and have every chance. Cash Now, runner-up in his last pair with solid figures, drops from $20,000 to $12,500 but moves from his preferred surface of turf to dirt, so we’re not quite sure what to expect. Toss him in somewhere.

*

RACE 6: Post: 4:06 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 10-Camera
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 2-Mystical Chant; 6-Love to Eat.

Forecast: Camera may be one of the more promising juvenile fillies on the grounds at this stage, and the $1.05 million purchase out of the multiple Grade-1 placed Cassies Dreamer makes her debut following a string of impressive drills that should have her fit and ready. The Todd Pletcher-trained juvenile easily disposed of her workmate in a recent gate drill – View Workout Video – and appears to be blessed with a bit more early speed than you’d normally see from a daughter of Curlin. Drawn comfortably outside, she is listed as the 5/2 morning line favorite, but we suspect she will go a bit lower than that. In a race in which those that have raced don’t overwhelm, let’s go with this fresh face and hope that performs up to expectations.

*

RACE 7: Post: 4:39 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Colonel Bowman
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Caramel Chip.

Forecast: Colonel Bowman is a pro’s pro and appears well-placed to secure his fifth consecutive win. The son of Curlin earned a career top speed figure when opening up in mid-stretch before barely surviving close home (moved too soon?) last time out and simply should outclass this starter allowance ($20,000) field with anything close to that race, or any of his others in 2023. Listed at 6/5 on the morning line, the David Jacobson-trained gelding won’t offer any wagering value in the win pool but can be used as a rolling exotic single.

*

RACE 8: Post: 5:14 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-R Calli Kim; 4-Tass; 8-Lucky Peridot
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Blue Times.

Forecast: This $32,000 claiming middle distance turf affair for fillies and mares is quite challenging. For every positive among the main players, there’s a glaring negative, so maybe the best strategy is to spread deeply and hope to land a price. R Calli Kim launches a comeback – she’s been away for more than a year – but if ready the veteran mare can act at this level and is squarely priced on the morning line at 6-1. She vans in from Turfway Park, where her work tab was strong and consistent, and she’s won fresh in the past. Tass has the proper closing style for a race that projects to have faster than average early splits, but she’s had five prior runs over the Saratoga lawn and has yet to hit the board (yeah, that’s a minus). Perhaps most effective when given a patient ride, she could produce a dangerous late kick if such a strategy is utilized. Lucky Peridot switches to Flavian Prat and is another capable of making some noise with her best effort. She was dull when unplaced as the favorite in her last outing but a repeat of her race before last – a good runner-up effort at Gulfstream Park – puts her in the fray at 10-1 on the morning line.

*

RACE 9: Post: 5:47 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Majority Partner
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Majority Partner drops for the money run while returning to his favorite main track – he’s two-for-two at Saratoga – and the Linda Rice-trained gelding seems fairly solid at 9/5 on the morning line in this seven furlong event for allowance optional claiming ($45,000) older horses). His recent speed figures are strong’ it’s just that he’s just been in a tad too tough. Not today. Let’s go with the Linda Rice-trained son of Unified in the win pool and as a key in the various rolling exotics.

*

RACE 10: Post: 6:20 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Dance With Me Babe; 4-Three Girls
Backups/savers: none. 12-Gotham Gray

Forecast: Dance With Me Babe finished second under these conditions in her last two starts with rising speed figures, so with any kind of forward move the daughter of War Dancer should be able to earn her diploma. Irad Ortiz, Jr. rides her back and projects to have her on or near the lead throughout. Three Girls, away since December, returns without blinkers and with Lasix and could easily be a better type this time around for new trainer George Weaver. This will be her first start for a tag, so the softer company shouldn’t hurt, either. The works aren’t flashy but are steady and should have her fit enough.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 1: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-She’s Resilient
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: She’s Resilient has been meticulously campaigned during her career while compiling a record of three wins from four starts. She had her perfect record snapped when she finished third in a tough starter’s allowance sprint at Santa Anita in mid-June but should get back on the proper today with this realistic class drop to the $40,000 level in a race restricted to 3-year-old fillies. Regular rider Umberto Rispoli stays aboard, and with a bullet workout (:46.4h) at San Luis Rey Downs just eight days ago the daughter of Exaggerator looks like a logical rolling exotic single at or near her morning line of 8/5.

*

RACE 2: Post: 2:35 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Colonel Vargo; 6-Too Much Info
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Colonel Vargo is a Pleasanton shipper with form good enough to win at this level on this circuit. He looks a little cheap on paper but has speed figure that fit nicely at this $20,000 level and his numbers have risen in each of his last six starts, so he’s probably not done improving. We’ll put him slightly on top at 4-1 on the morning line. Too Much Info is a dangerous Lone Star Park shipper from Robertino Diodoro’s barn. It’s possible that he prefers grass but on numbers he’s competitive and he’s making his first start since being gelded, his first with blinkers on, and his first in a claimer. Also, with the valuable ship-and-win money available, you know he’s live and well-meant.

*

RACE 3: Post: 3:07 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Runningwiththeboyz; 1-Eddie’s New Dream
Backups/savers/Underneath: 6-Paris Peacock.

Forecast: We’re not quite sure if Runninwiththeboyz wants any part of nine furlongs but she’s a quality filly and the projected controlling speed, so given the circumstances the daughter of Liam’s Map looks like the one to beat in this allowance optional claiming turf affair for fillies and mares. She’s a tad shy in the speed figure department but at 7/2 on the morning line she’s worth the gamble. Eddie’s New Dream is another that appears to prefer a shorter trip, but she’s always been thoroughly consistent and genuine (first or second in 14 of 24 career starts) and seems likely to inherit a comfortable stalking trip. On pure speed figures, she’s strictly the one to beat.

*

RACE 4: Post: 3:38 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Don’t Fight the Fed; 1-Cowboy Mike
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 2-Ship and Scam.

Forecast: Don’t Fight the Ed was victimized by a miserable trip in his debut (off slowly, in heavy traffic most of the way, very wide into the lane) and did much better than he had a right to do when closing with interest without being knocked about to wind up fourth in a maiden state-bred sprint at Santa Anita last June. Low profile connections notwithstanding, the son of Nyquist deserves another chance today while stretching out to a mile. With good racing luck, he should pose a serious threat and is a wager for us at or near his morning line of 4-1. Cowboy Mike has burned money in his first three starts but adds blinkers while trying two turns for the first time and seems likely to gun for the lead from his rail post. We’re not sure if he really wants to run this far, but if he can ever win at this distance it’ll probably be in his first attempt.

*

RACE 5: Post: 4:08 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Kissed by Fire; 5-Just Nails
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Sultry Kitten.

Forecast: Kissed By Fire finished a strong second in a hot race in her comeback in May and today shortens up a furlong while adding Lasix in this abbreviated grass dash for maiden fillies and mares. A bullet half mile workout (:46.1h) over the Santa Anita training track two weeks ago should have her primed and ready. Just Nails displayed some talent in her debut more than a year ago when a very good second in her debut at Los Alamitos, but then disappeared. If she returns as well as she left for trainer Marty Jones, the daughter of Twirling Candy will have a legitimate look, the long layoff notwithstanding. It’s hard to make much of her recent workout pattern but if fit she can be a major pace factor.

*

RACE 6: Post: 4:38 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Kiss Today Goodbye; 2-Bye Bye Bobby
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Azul Coast; 7-Kitten Mischief

Forecast: Kiss Today Goodbye has never run this far but strikes us as a marathon type and could improve enough in this year’s edition of the Cougar II Stakes-G3 regain his winning form. You have to go back to December of 2020 to find his last win (Santa Antonio S.-G2 at Santa Anita), but this may be his best chance for success after consistently falling short when facing the best older handicap runners in the West. Bye Bye Bobby moves up from Double A to face the big boys after compiling a rather impressive race record in New Mexico (first or second in eight of 13 career starts). His numbers are just okay but what makes him interesting is the mile and one-half distance, which we suspect he’ll handle just fine. At 6-1 on the morning line under Mike Smith, the son of Quality Road is worth including on the main ticket.

*

RACE 7: Post: 5:08 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Smart Code
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Almendares, 10-Boss Sully

Forecast: Smart Code probably hit the front too soon, went to idling, and then got nailed on the line by stable mate Agency in an excellent sprint comeback last month at Santa Anita. The Mark Glatt-trained colt earned a career top number in defeat, has trained extremely well since, and proved last year he could handle a distance of ground. The lightly raced son of Honor Code has upside that most of the others in here don’t, so at 7/2 on the morning line he offers an excellent wagering opportunity in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.

*

RACE 8: Post: 5:38 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): Pony Express; 1-Mirahmadi
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Pony Express has trained like an exceptional prospect for John Sadler and looks quick enough to be very effective at this five furlong distance. A :59 2/5 gate work - View Workout Video (https://www.xbtv.com/video/gun-runner/pony-express-outside-miracle-mark-middle-and-allocate-worked-at-santa-anita-park-on-july-16th-2023/) - could not have been more impressive, so we’re expecting a major effort first time out. Mirahmadi ran below expectations when a distant second at 3/5 in the Fasig-Tipton Futurity on debut last month and never really looked like the hot shot prospect he was supposed to be. He broke a bit slowly in that race – a small excuse – and then he did so again in a subsequent gate work - View Workout Video (https://www.xbtv.com/video/into-mischief/mirahmadi-outside-and-extortion-worked-5-furlongs-in-59-60-at-santa-anita-park-on-july-16th-2023/) - so he may be vulnerable again at a short price. We’ll be surprised if the winner isn’t one or the other, but we’ll prefer Pony Express on top.

*

RACE 9: Post: 6:08 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Salesman; 1-Cathkin Peak; 7-Du Jour
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 11-Irideo

Forecast: The Wickerr S. always seems to be a contentious affair and this year is no different. Salesman didn’t get the best or runs when ninth (beaten six lengths) in his U.S. debut for trainer Richard Mandella after impressing in a series of sharp drills leading up to the Shoemaker Mile-G1 in late May. He’s much better than that race shows, and with a clean break and a good second flight trip the veteran gelding can step forward considerably. Based on his European form and a recent powerful workout - View Workout Video (https://www.xbtv.com/video/salesman-worked-6-furlongs-in-1/salesman-worked-6-furlongs-in-112-20-at-santa-anita-park-on-july-14th-2023/) - he’s a legitimate long shot gamble at 8-1 on the morning line. Cathkin Peak has looked terrific in the morning for trainer Phil D’Amato - View Workout Video (https://www.xbtv.com/video/alhebayeb/cathkin-peak-front-and-cash-equity-worked-5-furlongs-in-59-80-at-santa-anita-park-on-july-9th-2023/) - and projects to enjoy a soft, ground-saving trip from his good rail draw. He was Grade-1 placed over this course a couple of years ago and if he can return to that form today he’ll be hard to beat. Du Jour switches to top rider Juan Hernandez, continues to drill impressively, and has races that make him quite dangerous. Toss him in.

*

RACE 10: Post: 6:38 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Ipanema Girl; 5-Zoe’s Pride
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: A little will go a long way in this wide-open maiden $50,000 claiming sprint for California-bred fillies and mares. Ipanema Girl has had just one start, so she’s far less exposed than the others and that outing was late year facing straight maidens sprinting on turf. Hopefully, she’s a better type this time around, and from a favorable outside draw (where the best lanes have been during the first two days of the season), the Carla Gaines-trained daughter of Strong Mandate seems quite a bit more dangerous than her 12-1 morning line might indicate. Zoe’s Pride finished third in maiden special weight company at Pleasanton earlier this month and earned a number that makes her highly competitive in this soft spot.

*

RACE 11: Post: 7:08 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Overdue; 10-Jacks Outlaw; 11-Give Me the Lute
Backups/savers: 2-Irish Heatwave; 7-Comradery.

Forecast: The finale is a typical grass grab bag, this one for older $25,000 claiming milers. Anything can happen, so use as many as your budget allows in rolling exotic play. Overdue is a three time winner over the local lawn and that alone makes him dangerous. The Phil D’Amato-trained gelding needs to be held up early and get cover and given that kind of trip/ride today the veteran gelding should fire one of his good shots. Jacks Outlaw is a dangerous Bay Area shipper who can win as the controlling speed or from a stalking position. He’s a fit on speed figures and offers a good price chance at or near his 10-1 morning line. Give Me the Lute is a first off the claim for Andy Mathis (powerful 25% with this angle) and lands top rider Juan Hernandez. Freshened since February, he’s been primarily a front runner throughout his career, but he could appreciate patient handling over a course we know he likes very much.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis July 23, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park has a 15-race card to begin the week. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 sequence starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a low 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

3-Te Amo Blue Chip (7/2)-Got the pocket in last versus this kind but couldn't catch a well-meant winner on 6-9 who set swift fractions throughout. Recent form is sharp and could get the same trip with a better outcome.
4-Turbo Blue Chip (7/2)-This field mostly consists of horses who are camera shy this year or are coming into the race in questionable shape. Didn't get off the gate in quick fashion last time and that isn't typical. Now bumps up and can compete if its usual gate speed is there.
7-Cyclone Banner N (25-1)-The last race was similar to #3, faced a strong winner on 6-16 who set quick fractions throughout and couldn't be caught. This veteran bumps up in class and starts outside so that gives us a 25-1 morning line. Has won 7 of 24 here, if Lems leaves aggressively and lands on the point or in the 2-hole the gelding could surprise.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

3-Roger Rabbit (9/2)-This is Merriman's choice over #1, who he won with last time and is stepping up. This Sarah Andrews trainee has hit the board in 14 of 20 races and has posted 7 wins at Nfld. Ships in from the Meadows and came 2nd here versus better on 5-21 with the same pilot in command.
6-Shine All The Way (3-1)-Has only 2 wins in 27 starts this year but does good work here posting 11 wins in 38 races. This is a soft spot and could take an overdue picture if Wrenn provides a sharp steer.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

1-Johnny Chip (5/2)-Landed in a soft spot and won at first asking for the Braiden Rhoades barn. Led from gate to wire in last and Merriman could work the same plan. Steps up but should fit like a glove against this kind.
5-Not Today (7-1)-Drops out of Open company and should relish this kind. Probably doesn't have enough gate speed to land on the point but a pocket ride behind #1 could work for a picture.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

6-Fashion Chocolate (3-1)-Willing to take a couple of swings to beat #3 the 8/5 morning line chalk. This beaten favorite tried to go gate to wire and fell short by a neck on 7-16. Comes right back, faces the same kind and now Davis Jr is in the bike. That's a positive driver changes and could be the winning difference.
7-Manofmanymuscles (5-1)-Stepped up and was 15 lengths back at the first call last time. That trip didn't end well, comes right back at the same level and the price might be better than 7/2. Not sure if Merriman leaves alongside #6 or ducks and then comes after the lead later. Either way this 6-year-old should be in striking range around the last turn.

$1.00 Late Pick 4

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Del Mar - Race #9

Picks
Notes

#13 Hit the Road
Maybe he's never getting back to his better stuff from a couple years back, but he also seems like a pretty good fit with these and has done some good work over the local course. Possible, and the price should be right.

#11 Irideo
Nothing wrong with his form so far this year, but the big prices from the last few are going to disappear as he drops out of Grade I company. His connections are likely thrilled to get away from Exaulted for the first time in a couple starts.

#1 Cathkin Peak
He's a pretty reliable finisher and should be in the frame again late, and I think this is a pretty reasonable spot for him to return off the layoff. Dangerous if he's ready.

Race Summary
Hit the Road has some appeal at a decent price, as he might be able to find a decent enough trip from the wide draw and has a ceiling high enough to win this -- if he can ever find it again.

Del Mar - Race #10

Picks
Notes

#6 Twin Soul
She classed up well when racing for this price last out off the Delta and Sam Houston form, and I like that her tactical pace should have her in a great spot while everyone sorts it out early.

#5 Zoe's Pride
She drops in for the first time and seems like a reasonable enough fit off the special weight tries up North, and she makes a lot of sense to come along late for a piece or more of this.

#2 Lone Mountain Girl
Wouldn't be a total shock to see her land this, but I feel like she's probably going to find one or two of these a little too tough. That said -- she has some pace and might be able to keep in the mix into the turn with this group.

Race Summary
Twin Soul looks like a good fit while racing from close range, and I think something similar to her first California start would be good enough to keep her in the picture with these.

Del Mar - Race #11

Picks
Notes

#6 Overdue
Wouldn't want to be here if the price got too short, but I do think he's going to be tough here after just missing with a tough trip last time out and a barn that excels with local runners like this.

#4 Nero Tulip
He goes second off the bench while dropping into the claiming ranks, and he will probably still get overlooked on the board based on some modest form. Could see him plugging away to hang for a piece late.

#1 Light Fury
Tactical type might appreciate getting a break from Gulfstream and figures for a cozy trip from the fence, and I think he's probably a pretty good fit at the local level.

Race Summary
Overdue has been tough when facing this kind of company over the last year or so, and most of his flatter running lines came against tougher. Thinking Nero Tulip or Light Fury might add a little spice.

# 5 BELLA LADY 5/2

# 7 AGOLDEN EAGLE SPRING 6/1

# 4 SILVER N NAVY 4/1

I think BELLA LADY is a solid choice. She looks very strong in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. She must be considered given the competitive speed figures. Has to be given consideration versus this field displaying decent numbers recently and an average Equibase Speed Fig of 76 under similar conditions. SILVER N NAVY - Has to be given a shot - I like the figs from the last competition.

# 1 NOISEY BURGLAR 7/2

# 2 CAL 5/2

# 3 QUEEN VERRAZANO 2/1

NOISEY BURGLAR supports the bet in here. I like Ortega on this filly to give her a very strong chance to hit the wire first. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this filly. She should have a strong outing versus this less demanding lot. CAL - She has been running strongly and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this group of horses. This jock and conditioner team has produced some very strong return on investment numbers at this track. QUEEN VERRAZANO - Has been constatntly racing well lately. Has to be carefully examined - I like the figs from the last contest.

Rating: https://www.trackmaster.com/images/golden.jpghttps://www.trackmaster.com/images/golden.jpghttps://www.trackmaster.com/images/golden.jpg

#5 PROVOCATIVA (ML=3/1)
#2 GINGER SPARKLE (ML=2/1)
#1 KATIESDREAMGIRL (ML=30/1)

PROVOCATIVA - A thoroughbred coming back this promptly after a strong outing is a good omen. The rest of the bunch may trail this mount all the way around the track. Getting a weight break of 5 pounds from last race at Gulfstream Park on June 25th. Certainly could make the difference right here in this race. GINGER SPARKLE - A repeat of that most recent performance on Jun 4th where she recorded a speed rating of 70 looks strong enough to score in this affair. Barboza gets a break on this horse carrying 5 pounds less than last out. Should help in this event. KATIESDREAMGIRL - Don't throw this animal out due to her last event at Gulfstream Park where she finished seventh on a sloppy track. Should improve this time around.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 DISCO QUEEN (ML=5/2), #3 SHE NASTY (ML=9/2), #4 DOMINEERING (ML=8/1),

DISCO QUEEN - Could be tough for this thoroughbred to beat this bunch off of that last speed fig. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list. SHE NASTY - Won't be easy for this horse to beat this field off of that last rating. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the possibly overvalued equines list.

#3 LORD DRAGON (ML=8/1)
#8 BIG POWER RED (ML=4/1)

LORD DRAGON - You probably should throw out that last event at Oaklawn Park on the mud where he finished out of the money. Should do well in this race on a fast track. Another way to identify class is EPS (earnings per start). This thoroughbred has the uppermost in the field. I think he'll be close at the finish line. BIG POWER RED - This horse's last race was at Lone Star Park in a race with a class rating of 96. Dropping drastically in Equibase class figure in today's event puts him in a solid position in today's race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 OPTIMISTIC (ML=7/2), #4 SPHEROID (ML=9/2), #10 RIVER KAT (ML=5/1),

OPTIMISTIC - Even though victorious in last, didn't finish the way you'd like to see when stepping up to face stiffer competition. Last effort was too nice. Not too far of a reach to expect a 'bounce' this time. SPHEROID - Difficult to take this racer at the odds after the finish (ninth) in the last event. This pony ran a common speed rating last race out. He shouldn't improve and will likely get beat in today's race running that figure. RIVER KAT - That was simply not a very good exhibition in the last affair.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Have to go with #3 LORD DRAGON on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (4) She’s Resilient has a good turn of speed and could control the pace and the race here. (1) Just a Little Luck will benefit from a ground-saving trip. (3) Bella Baby should work out a good trip here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4.
3rd race – (5) Oakhurst has been racing in graded stakes and has a class edge here. (1) Eddie’s New Dream will be aided by a rail trip. (6) Paris Peacock was second in her last two starts and should be in the picture once again. (2) Shared Future seems to have found her groove on turf. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-6. Doubles: 1-2-5-6 with 1-2-7-9.
4th race – (1) Cowboy Mike should appreciate the stretchout to two turns and break his maiden. (2) Ship and Scam was second last time and looks like the one to fear. (7) Coppertunity is worth a look in his career debut. (9) Big Baby was a troubled third in his debut and cannot be ignored. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-9.
6th race – (1) Azul Coast has been away since December but is working sharply for Baffert and gets the nod here. (4) Kiss Today Goodbye was third in a Grade 1 stakes and commands respect. *D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
2nd race [Alw 1495000, 1 mi] – (2) Slip Mahoney returns as a new gelding after a disappointing finish in the Long Branch at Monmouth Park. He flashed a lot of talent at Aqueduct this winter in his maiden victory and then in the Gotham (G3) when he was second. (3) Set Sail has not run in more than a year and when last seen was second in an allowance at Belmont Park earning a speed figure that tops this field. (5) Top Secret was a maiden winner last month at Ellis Park by more than five lengths for Steve Asmussen. (4) Mount Up got his maiden win in his second start at Belmont as the odds-on favorite for Todd Pletcher.
4th race [Shuvee (G2), 1 1/8 mi] – (4) Clairiere won her last two starts in Grade 1 stakes with triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park and then the Ogden Phipps at Belmont. Her career record stands at 19: 8-5-3 with $3.1 million in earnings. (2) Nest was last year’s champion 3-year-old filly and the winner of three graded stakes in a row after running second in the Belmont Stakes. In the Breeders’ Cup Distaff she finished fourth behind Clairiere who was third. (1) Skratch Kat was fourth in the Alabama (G1) at Saratoga last summer and was second in her second start of this year in an allowance just a week ago. (3) Pistol Liz Ablazen was an allowance winner last month at Parx Racing.
6th race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (10) Camera has shown up in a number of Saratoga previews as a 2-year-old filly to watch. That’s saying something since Todd Pletcher has already had a couple of impressive debut winners. She was a $1.05 million purchase at the Saratoga yearling sale and is out of a mare that was graded stakes placed. (2) Mystical Chant was second in her first start for Steve Asmussen at Ellis Park at 4-1 after setting the pace. (8) Life’s Joy was a $300,000 yearling purchase by the great sprinter Mitole and out of a mare that was a debut winner at Saratoga herself and has produced eight winners with three stakes winners. (9) Sam’s Treasure was second in her first start which was on the turf at Belmont for Wesley Ward.
7th race [Alw 20000s, 7F] – (6) Lord Captain was claimed at Churchill Downs in May for $40,000 by Linda Rice after the horse won his fourth race in a row. Rice has done well with the horses she acquired in Kentucky as part of her 26% winning rate with her new claims. (2) Colonel Bowman has won four races in a row and six out of her seven starts for David Jacobson. (5) Caramel Chip finished first or second in his last eight races in a row including five victories. (7) Glory Road was claimed away from Linda Rice for $25,000 from a victory and has three wins at seven furlongs.
Best bets: Slip Mahony (2nd); Clairiere (4th). Best value: Camera (6th); Lord Captain (7th).
