__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 1: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Man On the Moon; 3-Mike Operator
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Man On the Moon is a Gulfstream Park invader seeking valuable ship-and-win bonus money while returning to his claim level. The Bobb Hess, Jr.-trained gelding shows a prior win over the Del Mar main track and a bullet blowout over the local surface six days ago. He’s the logical top pick. Mike Operator won his last pair during the spring, including a $12,500 miler at Santa Anita, but has been away for two months and returns at the bottom. Obviously, this is not a healthy pattern but he’s a reasonable contender, nonetheless.

*

RACE 2: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Capo Sorella; 4-Outer Sunset; 9-Miss Pixy Stix
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 2-American Tsunami.

Forecast: Here’s a wide open maiden claiming juvenile filly sprint that requires a spread in rolling exotic single. Capo Sorella has displayed enough early speed in morning drills to make her a major player – perhaps even the one to beat – for a barn whose first timers often run better than they work. She’s 6-1 on the morning line and is worth a gamble at that price. Outer Sunset chased tougher straight maidens at Pleasanton in her debut and wasn’t beaten too badly. Against this group, the Bill McLean-trained daughter of Accelerate should be quite competitive at 5-1 on the morning line. Miss Pixy Stix invades from Florida after failing to land a blow when facing maiden special weight foes. She adds blinkers, and that combined with a class drop makes her a “must use.”

*

RACE 3: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Anywho; 4-My Destiny
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Anywho) is back sprinting where she’s probably most comfortable and the speedy sophomore filly should regain her winning form with the return to the conditioned allowance ranks. The main issue is her rail post. Inside speed was a death during the first three days of the season and it remains to be seen if the bias will carry over to this week. My Destiny projects to enjoy an ideal second flight trip outside and have every chance should our top pick get mired down in the quicksand.

*

RACE 4: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Unfaithful Ways; 3-Musical Rhapsody
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Myfavoritedaughter.

Forecast: Unfaithful Ways knows how to win races (she’s 4-for-12), shows a prior score over the De Mar turf course, and just earned a career top speed figure when winning an optional claiming grass miler at Santa Anita last month. She’s unproven at this mini marathon trip but in her present form we’ll gamble that she will be able to handle the distance. Musical Rhapsody was a genuine stayer in Ireland and earned Racing Post ratings that make her a fit in this first level allowance affair. She’s also a first time Lasix user for a barn that excels with European imports and is deserved morning line favorite at 2-1. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

*

RACE 5: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 11-U R Pressed; 4-Warrior Red
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Big Gun, 10-Anthony’s Best.

Forecast: U R Pressed looks the best on paper in this bottom rung $20,000 maiden claiming sprint for older horses. In the frame in his last pair but away since December, the Brody’s Cause gelding has low percentage connections but numbers from last year that can win and a bullet gate work (:47hg, fastest of 44) seven days ago to have him on edge. Warrior Red adds blinkers for the first time and based on speed figures in the one to fear most. He gets a significant break in the weights with the switch to bug boy Alsagoor and projects to inherit a good stalking trip and have every chance from the quarter pole home.

*

RACE 6: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Devil Moon
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Devil Moon has improved considerably of late and a repeat of either one of his last two starts should be good enough to beat this starter allowance field sprinting on turf. The Malibu Moon gelding lands the favorable rail and projects to be on or near the lead throughout. Let’s take a stand and make him a win play and rolling exotic single.

*

RACE 7: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Ceiling Crusher
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Ceiling Crusher is undefeated in four starts, the last two wins in state-bred stakes company by a combined 32 and one-half lengths. She can regress considerably and still win, but at a no-value price. You can use her as a free bingo space in rolling exotic play and better yet just pass the race.

*

RACE 8: Post: 5:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Annie’s Hope; 8-Idessia
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 10-Strange Addiction

Forecast: Annie’s Hope lands a good spot to graduate. Off slowly and bit rank early in a similar turf miler for maiden state-bred fillies and mares at Santa Anita last month, she stayed on as best she before winding up second while well clear of the rest in an effort that should be good enough to handle this field. Idessia has a race two back at this trip that charts well and should be included on your main ticket. The Phil D’Amato-trained daughter of Smiling Tiger appears to be the most dangerous of the closing types.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________
RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Price is Truth
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Instamatic.

Forecast: Maiden New York-bred juveniles sprint five and one-half furlongs in the Thursday opener. Price is Truth is a good-looking son of Union Rags with a work tab that catches the eye. His breeze July 20 was accomplished with ease and power - View Workout (https://www.xbtv.com/video/naughty-destiny/naughty-destiny-outside-and-price-is-truth-worked-4-furlongs-in-49-96-at-saratoga-on-july-14th-2023/) - and was much more impressive than the moderate final time might indicate. The Christophe Clement trained colt is plenty fit for a stable that has solid stats with first time starters, so at 7/2 on the morning line he’s our top pick and major push in the various rolling exotics.

*

RACE 2: Post: 1:44 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-Lady Jasmine; 2-Miss San Gabriel; 7-Anileate
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Lady Jasmine shows up in a restricted ($50,000) seller in her first start for a tag and seems to have found a proper spot to regain her winning form. She has recent speed figures that are good enough to be effective at this level and also has a prior victory over the Saratoga turf course, so while she’s clearly a one-paced grinder the daughter of Cairo Prince looks capable of tagging the leaders close home. Miss San Gabriel won a maiden special weight grass affair gate-to-wire at Pimlico in her most recent effort while getting away with a very soft pace. Based on speed figures, this is where she belongs, but she may be a need-the-lead type, so front-running tactics most likely will be attempted again. Anileate ran well when second in a starter allowance affair at Belmont Park last time out and based on the speed figure she earned the daughter of Pioneerof the Nile is a solid contender. However, she’s burned money in the past and is not really one to trust. Tread lightly here.

*

RACE 3: Post: 2:20 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-It Takes Heart; 7-Candy Caramel
Backups/savers/Underneath: 2-Arella Star.

Forecast: It Takes Heart plummets from stakes company at Gulfstream Park to this restricted (nw-3) $35,000 claiming sprint but there is nothing suspicious about the class drop; this is where she belongs. She has good stalking speed and projects to have every chance to achieve her preferred trip based on the projected race flow. Candy Caramel, in the frame in her last five starts, figures to fire another good shot and is a “must use.” She’s not particularly quick early and will have to do her best work from the quarter pole home.

*

RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Vitaemi; 2-Beautiful Karen; 6-Meraviglioso
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: We’ll spread the fourth race, a $16,000 claiming sprint for older fillies and mares. Vitaemi is a Parx invader with numbers that fit and if she break sharply from the gate the David Jacobson-trained mare could grab control early and never look back. She’s won 12 races from 60 career starts, an admirable resume, but this will be her first start at the Spa. Beautiful Karen returns to her claim level and likely will have a strong pace presence throughout. If she hooks up with Vitaemi, the race could easily set up for Meraviglioso, a closer who has been chasing tougher of late and whose speed figures are as good as any in the field. The Richard Dutrow barn is off to a very slow start at the meeting, so don’t be surprised if you see a bunch class droppers – just like this filly – in the coming days or weeks.

*

RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Verionica Greene; 4-Pleasant Passage
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Beaute Cachee.

Forecast: Veronica Greene was a solid second in a similar spot at Belmont Park last month and today adds blinkers while getting a bit more ground to work with. The Chad Brown-trained daughter of Tapit is solid on numbers and ran very well when second over the local lawn last year. Pleasant Passage is another putting on blinkers for the first time after finishing a good third in the same race ‘Greene exits. A winner on debut on grass here last year, she’s only had five starts (with two wins) and may have a tad more upside than ‘Greene. We’ll include both in our rolling exotics.

*

RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Kant Call It; 1-Poseidon’s Mist
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Focus Pocus.

Forecast: Kant Call It has displayed excellent speed in recent drills - View Workout (https://www.xbtv.com/video/kant-call-it/kant-call-it-worked-4-furlongs-in-48-48-at-saratoga-on-july-20th-2023/) - while being hard held and looking very much like a win-early type. Obviously bred for much speed (Kantharos), the Christophe Clement-trained filly is listed at 5-1 on the morning line in this state-bred dash and we’ll be happy to gamble at that price if we can get it. Poseidon’s Mist is another that has done some good work in the morning, first at Monmouth Park and then here at Saratoga. The barn has superb stats with the first time starter angle, so we’ll be surprised if this bred homebred filly isn’t highly competitive.

*

RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Tartini; 5-Eyes On Target; 8-Tommy Bee
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 11-Speedy Hans.

Forecast: Tartini was out of his element in the Belmont Gold Cup-G3 but is a strong contender today with this class drop to the $25,000 claiming level. Though he has been trying marathons lately, this middle distance affair may better suit him. He’s one of several in the field that can win with anything close to their best. Eyes On Target picks up Irad Ortiz, Jr. and should be dangerous from off the pace. He has several back speed figures that are better than par for this level. Tommy Bee has finished first or second in seven of 11 career starts and has been facing better in all of his recent starts. He’ll enjoy the class relief and is a major contender in his first outing since mid-May for Brad Cox.

*

RACE 8: Post: 5:10 ET Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Next
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Next is arguably the best main track marathoner in North America, and after trouncing a better field in the Brooklyn S.-G2 last month the son of Not This Time will be odds-on to do the same against six rivals in this year’s edition of the Birdstone S. over a mile and three-quarters. He’ll likely have to settle for a stalking trip rather than as the controlling speed with Sea Form in the field, but it shouldn’t matter. He’s a logical no value rolling exotic single.

*

RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Space Launch; 7-Dripping Gold; 4-Pioneering Spirit
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Onenightstandards; 5-Good Skate.

Forecast: Here’s a grass grab bag for second level allowance mini marathoners. There’s not much pace signed on, which gives Space Launch a golden opportunity from the rail to establish the running and wire the field if his connections opt for that strategy. The son of Bernardini is reunited with Joel Rosario, who has gotten good run out of him in the past, so let’s put the Christophe Clement-trained gelding on top. Dripping Gold is hard knocker with good prior from over the Saratoga turf course. His best puts him right there. Pioneering Spirit has won his last two starts in clever fashion, though on numbers he’ll probably need a bit of improvement to extend the streak. It’s hard to gauge how he’ll handle the three-turn trip, and as a deep closer his style might be compromised by slow fractions, but given his current form we have to use him.

*

RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Sosua Summer; 7-Souper Quest; 8-Famous Gent
Backups/savers: 3-Awesome Native.

Forecast: Sosua Summer is fast on numbers and a perfect one-for-one over this Saratoga course and distance. The Summer Front colt employs and effective stalking style and is guaranteed a ground-saving trip from his rail post position. Souper Quest won at first asking when facing moderate Florida-bred foes at Gulfstream Park last December but earned a number that makes him competitive at this level. If ready, he’ll be dangerous in his first start with Lasix under Irad Ortiz, Jr. Famous Gent should be a late threat and probably is too big of a number at 12-1 on the morning line. Toss him in somewhere.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks Del Mar - Race #6

Picks
Notes

#11 Tom Horn
He'll get on the turf for the first time after graduating easily at Los Al last time out, and he might get a decent trip prompting or spying the pace early on from this wide draw. Seems capable.

#8 Lansdowne
He's definitely one of the ones in this group, but he has also been settling for some underneath pieces and might take a bit too much cash. Won't surprise to see him win this, but I wouldn't want a short kind of price.

#1 Devil Moon
He's fast enough to sit close early, and the rail draw might not be too much to handle in a race without a ton of serious early burn for this kind of short trip. Could see him mixing it up the entire way.

Race Summary
Tom Horn moves to the turf off a score last out from just off the pace, and a similar trip might give him a real chance to win right back if he likes the new footing.

Del Mar - Race #7

Picks
Notes

#1 Chismosa
She was no match for the chalk when they met going long a couple starts back, but the most recent start again seemed to confirm that her best game is racing around one turn. All three lifetime wins came here, and she's at least a little interesting if the price is fair.

#3 Ceiling Crusher
She has been a monster through four starts, but she has been on a different level in those last two stakes romps, and the cutback doesn't pose any particular worries based on the overall form. Probably wins this at another short number, but she's at least a mild question mark over the local footing.

#5 Tom's Regret
She scored at 4/5 when finally getting away from Ceiling Crusher again last out, and there's nothing wrong with her super-consistent form. That said, she is like all the rest in here who are squarely running for second if the chalk brings her A+ game.

Race Summary
Chismosa woke up a bit when turning back around one bend last out, and she was pretty sharp over the local course last season. Maybe the change of scenery gives her the bump she needs to get back in the same league as Ceiling Crusher.

Del Mar - Race #8

Picks
Notes

#12 Magic Game
She can bounce back off the dud last time out, as she has rebounded off clunkers before and should probably be able to find a decent pace-tracking trip while stretching out again. Something like 6/1 would feel a lot different than her regular off prices.

#6 Annie's Hope
She's in line for another good run while close to the pace today, but I also get the feeling that she might find one or two of these a bit too tough today. Capable on form.

#8 Idessia
She makes sense from off the pace, but I worry that the price is going to get a touch short given the way she's starting to look like more of a regular underneath threat. Best stuff might do, but I think you can beat her.

Race Summary
Magic Game could offer a mid-range price with this group, and I think she's really competitive with this group if she can bounce back likely she has in the past off dull runs.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks Colonial Downs - Race #1

Picks
Notes

#2 TOK TOK (5-2)
Motion firster has all the ingredients to win at first asking in turf sprint.

#5 SHARDS (3-2)
Dueled with next-out, G-III placed rival, scratched off Saratoga turf last Friday.

#6 A G DIAMOND (7-2)
Showed pulse in first two starts despite trouble lines.

Race Summary
All but two entrants debut in the MSW sprint for 2-year-olds on the turf. TOK TOK, from the high-percentage barn of trainer Graham Motion, could warrant his 5-2 morning line odds. His sire, Quality Road, is a Top 10 turf sire in North America this year with nearly $2 million in progeny earnings, and his dam, In Tune, was 3-for-3 and a Grade II winner on dirt in her brief career. Bet to win and place and play a 2-5 exacta box.

Colonial Downs - Race #3

Picks
Notes

#7 MR. LEFTY (6-1)
Live price play with a move forward off a ‘traffic’ marred debut sprint.

#2 KINGDOM FORCE (9-5)
Flat-footed break, good finish and gallop out on sloppy track.

#6 SKELLIG ISLAND (5-2)
Maker firster prepped in N.Y. since May, on Belmont and Saratoga lawns.

Race Summary
MR. LEFTY ‘kept on showing good late interest’ in his 5F MSW debut against all first-time starters at Gulfstream Park. His jockey’s objection claim in the stretch was disallowed, but with a race under his belt and a multiple Grade I-winning turf router as a sire, he’s worth a win and place bet stretching out to a mile.

Colonial Downs - Race #9

Picks
Notes

#2 BURN THE BREEZE (7-2)
No match for winner, but got up for second in shorter grass sprint.

#11 MOLLIE TAPPER (15-1)
Made 3-wide middle move to lead in dirt sprint, held second.

#12 BEER BALI (9-2)
Good speed on synthetic track, draws outside again for first turf try.

Race Summary
BURN THE BREEZE, brushed lightly at the start, tracked the 5-1 pace setter in a good spot but came under a drive on the turn and burst late to finish second as the odds-on favorite. The extra half-furlong should help in her second go-round on the grass at this level. Bet to win and place.

Saratoga - Race #7 - Post: 4:34pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $60,000 Class Rating: 100

#9 TARTINI (ML=8/1)
#5 EYES ON TARGET (ML=7/2)
#11 SPEEDY HANS (ML=5/1)

TARTINI - Atras adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a marked improvement. Great chance for this steed. Big late speed and should have good position. EYES ON TARGET - Maker moves this horse here to Saratoga from Laurel. Looking at the horse's recent past performance lines, he has shown the ability to win on different ovals. Took a significant drop in class rating last time out at Laurel. Returning to a similar class level in this race. I'd calculate a good performance. Getting a weight break of 5 pounds from last race at Laurel on Jun 18th. Could make the difference right here. SPEEDY HANS - Have to give this race horse a long hard look. In recent races, has posted the best speed figures on the turf at this distance. This gelding has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of Maker. Better be wary of this angle. Finished fourth at Gulfstream Park last out. Was close at the end and at odds of 5/1 right here, he looks like a possible contender.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 TRUCULENT (ML=4/1), #1A MOLIERE (ML=4/1), #8 TOMMY BEE (ML=9/2),

TRUCULENT - When checking today's class figure, he will have to garner a much better speed figure than last race out to be competitive in this turf route. MOLIERE - Had to show me much more last time out. Never made much of an impact. When you keep going back through the TrackMaster pps and don't see a victory recently, you have to say to yourself, 'Not worth it on this animal'. TOMMY BEE - Didn't hit the board on August 6th at Laurel. Followed it up with another less than stellar outing.

# 4 CHILLVILLE 8/5

# 5 STATE OF GRACE 3/1

# 1 KERRI'S MIRACLE 15/1

CHILLVILLE looks decent to best this field. Prominent in earnings per start at the distance/surface in this lot. With Mejias in the saddle guiding her, this mare will probably be able to break out early here. With a solid 59 speed fig last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this competition. KERRI'S MIRACLE - Look for this racer to be right there on the wire versus these horses. This filly has some longshot angles I like to bet on.

# 7 JJ FUN N JESS 5/2

# 3 CHAMPANITA 5/1

# 8 WAVE GOODBYE JESS 9/2

JJ FUN N JESS is my choice. Overall the speed figures of this animal look decent in this race. I think having Rivera ride this filly is a smart choice. With Rivera in the saddle guiding her, this filly ought to be able to break out early for this race. CHAMPANITA - Should be given consideration - I like the figs from the last contest. The average Equibase class figure of 61 makes this entrant difficult to beat. WAVE GOODBYE JESS - She looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. She has been running soundly recently while recording sharp Equibase Speed Figures.

#3 A THOUSAND IDOLS (ML=4/1)

A THOUSAND IDOLS - Strong return on investment for this rider and trainer twosome. Entered a $12,500 Maiden Claiming race at Laurel last time out and raced on a track listed as good finishing seventh. Expect better right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 NET WORTH (ML=8/5), #6 MIMS SECOND CHANCE (ML=7/2), #1 DANNY'S WINKSTER (ML=9/2),

NET WORTH - Didn't meet expectations when backed as the favorite in back to back races. Hasn't raced or had any works since Jun 22nd. Not much value on this morning-line favorite. MIMS SECOND CHANCE - This racer hasn't shown much effort in the last couple races. DANNY'S WINKSTER - Today's race is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a sprint race in the last sixty days. Not the greatest of indicators. Hard to bet on at 9/2 odds after the last two showings. Hard to bet this one from the one hole. His history is telling you not to.

https://www.trackmaster.com/images/tophat.jpgGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - A THOUSAND IDOLS - Registering a speed figure of 38 two back and then following up with a rating of 45 last race on June 22nd, this gelding is ready to do some damage.
