Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Eligio; 1-Ace of Clubs
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Ace of Clubs just edged Eligio by a half-length in a a similar starter’s allowance sprint but we have a hunch the result might be reversed today due to the draw, which finds the former leaving from the rail and the latter from a much more comfortable five post position. Otherwise, they’re pretty much the same, though Eligio should be a better price and therefore gets a slight preference. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 2: Post: 2:33 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Crimson Rose; 9-Quaria Thunder
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Crimson Rose is a first-off-the-claim for red hot Peter Eurton (solid stats with this angle) and switches to Juan Hernandez, so the daughter of Fed Biz seems like the logical top pick after finishing a close fourth at this level over this course last month. She’s most effective as the controlling speed, so we anticipate such a strategy will be employed. Stablemate Quaria Thunder, also making her first start since being haltered by Eurton for $25,000 out of that same July 30 race (she weakened to finish seventh) should produce a forward move as well, though from her outside draw the daughter of Mizzen Mast might being taken back and allowed to produce a late kick. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

RACE 3: Post: 3:07 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Anybody’s Choice
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Anybody’s Choice was convincing when winning a $40,000 seller here last month and should be capable of repeating on the raise after being claimed by Phil D’Amato. The daughter of Tapwrit catches a highly favorable pace scenario in this six runner affair for sophomore fillies and gets a significant break in the weights with the switch to a talented 7 lb. bug boy. Today’s extra sixteenth of a mile shouldn’t be an issue for her, so at 5/2 on the morning line, she’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 4: Post: 3:37 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Westward Look; 2-Inch; 1-Irish Heatwave.
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: We have a feeling this race might have a pace meltdown – Maven and Cane Creek Road have only one way to go – so we’ll operate under the assumption that the race will be won from behind. The main contenders in this messy and borderline inscrutable five furlong grass dash for $25,000 claimers are drawn inside. Westward Look finished a sharp second in a similar affair earlier this month and not much more will be needed to beat this field. His 2-for-24 career mark isn’t inspiring, but his best race can win it. Inch projects to be a strong late factor – he was fourth in the same race our top pick exits – but will need some racing luck through the lane to make an impact. Irish Heatwave is a past classer with numbers that fit, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that he’s winless in 10 starts over the local lawn. Still, he represents a late threat and at 10-1 is worth including on your ticket. Tread lightly here.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Thermal
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Greer My Dear.

Forecast: Thermal was extremely well meant in her debut sprinting in her debut last month but came up short in the final furlong and wound up a fading fourth. We’re expecting the daughter of Nyquist to be much fitter today and take this maiden juvenile field gate to wire. The daughter of Nyquist should easily establish the running in this main track miler and dominate in a race that came up relatively soft. The John Sadler-trained filly is 2-1 on the morning line and will offer value at that price if you can get it.

RACE 6: Post: 4:39 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Tom Horn; 4-Resilient
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Tom Horn seeks his third straight win and his powerful recent speed figures indicate the Steve Miyadi-trained son of Grazen and move up the ladder again and extend his streak. His win over this course and distance last month and visually quite pleasing when accomplished in a starter’s allowance race and this first level allowance field isn’t all that much tougher. Resilient, freshened since early June, tries grass for the first time and may like it, though his dirt pedigree doesn’t guarantee it. The son of Curlin to Mischief has a good stalking style and should be within striking range and have his chance from the quarter pole home.

Main ticket (in order of preference): Duty First
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Duty First surfaces in a maiden claimer for the first time and should be able to take advantage of the softer competition. The Jeff Mullins-trained colt finished third in a hot state bred sprint earlier this month, and the speed figure he earned in this race is good enough to win. He’s nicely drawn outside and makes a positive jockey switch to Hector Berrios. Listed at 7/2 on the morning line, the son of Smiling Tiger will offer excellent wagering value at or near that price.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-One Fast Bro; 8-Grape Nuts Warrior
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-No Slo Mo.

Forecast: Back from Golden Gate Fields where he ran quite well in three starts during the late spring, One Fast Bro is a two time winner over the Del Mar turf course and drops to his lowest level ever in this $25,000 two-turner in his first start since mid-June. He’s reunited with Kent Desormeaux, who has won on him in the past, so we’re expecting a major effort from the veteran son of Coil. The local works are steady and healthy for trainer Quinn Howey, so at 3-1 on the morning line he’s clearly the one to beat. Grape Nuts Warrior is an intriguing Saratoga shipper seeking valuable ship-and-win purse money. The son of Vancouver is a tad light up numbers but can turn it on late and should be a strong contender at this level on this circuit,

Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Eda; 3-Lady T
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Eda lands the cozy outside post and looks well-spotted to win her seventh straight race (and her eighth in 10 starts) in this year’s edition of the Rancho Bernardo Handicap-G2. The Bob Baffert-trained filly doesn’t usually win by much, but she certainly knows where the wire is, and given the moderate projected race flow the daughter of Munnings should inherit an ideal stalking trip outside and then kick home when called upon. Lady T returned off a long layoff to beat a good allowance field over the local main track last month and has trained very well in the interim. We haven’t seen her best yet, so with another forward move she could pose a challenge to our top pick.

RACE 10: Post: 6:37 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Port Ellen; 10-Luly Lemon Drop
Backups/savers: 8-Calabrian Queen; 9-Annie’s Joy.

Forecast: Port Ellen drops into a $50,000 claimer after failing to land a blow in her U.S. in mid-June when facing considerably tougher first level allowance grass sprinters in a very hot race for the level. These are considerably easier, slot her Phil D’Amato-trained Irish-bred sophomore seems sure to improve considerably. The stretch out to a mile shouldn’t be an issue, so at 6-1 on the morning line she’ll offer a reasonable price chance in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics. Lulu Lemon Drop is drawn farther out than we’d prefer but after finishing second in a similar affair in late June at Santa Anita the daughter of Long On Value must be considered a solid contender.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Pretty Up.

Forecast: Marco T. stayed on willingly to be third in her debut in May at Belmont Park, was entered back the following month but scratched, and returns for trainer Christophe Clement in this state-bred turf dash for juvenile fillies. Her recent work tab is a tad light, but we’ll assume she’s fit and ready and good enough to win based on her promising initial impression. Gioia Mia is a first timer who, like our top pick, is a daughter of Kantharos and therefore bred to enjoy sprinting on grass. The works look decent enough to include her on our ticket.

RACE 2: Post: 1:42 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Timely Conquest; 1-Amanda’s Folly
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Timely Conquest is undefeated in two very impressive sprint outings, stretches out to a distance she should be able to handle, and has a decided edge in speed figures based on her seven length romp in a first level allowance race over the local main track last month. This step up in class to the Fleet Indian Stakes should be well within her capabilities, so her role as the 7/5 morning line favorite appears justified. Amanda’s Folly is developing into a genuine and consistent performer for trainer Linda Rice while showing rising speed figures in each of her last four races. The daughter of Mendelssohn can be effective as the controlling speed or from a stalking position, so Irad Ortiz, Jr. can assess the pace flow and pick his strategy before the field hits the clubhouse turn. Both should be included in rolling exotic play, with preference on top to Timely Conquest.

RACE 3: Post: 2:16 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-City Man; 2-Dakota Gold; 6-Spirit of St Louis
Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: This is a difficult affair matching tough and genuine state-bred older horses that are quite familiar with each another. We’ll go three-deep in our rolling exotics but otherwise pass the race. City Man is a Christophe Clement-trained veteran fresh from a game win in the Kingston Stakes at Belmont Park in late May and should fire a similar shot in this year’s renewal of the West Point Stakes. First or second in four of five starts over the local lawn, the son of Mucho Macho Man likes to settle early and blast home and under regular pilot Joel Rosario he’ll have every chance to produce another winning late kick. Dakota Gold is capable of winning on the lead or from off the pace. However, his regular pilot (Irad Ortiz, Jr.) jumps off to ride what looks like the rising star of the division, Spirit of St Louis, a winner of three of four starts against lesser foes but with speed figures that make him a strong fit despite the class hike.

Forecast: The Wine Steward is perfect in two starts and should remain that way in this year’s renewal of the Funny Cide Stakes for 2-year-olds. A debut winner by six lengths at Belmont Park in May and then convincing (by nearly three lengths) in victory in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Ellis Park last month, the son of Vino Rosso lands the cozy outside post in this six furlong dash and projects to enjoy a soft, second flight, stalking trip before accelerating when given his cue. At 2-1 on the morning line, he’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 5: Post: 3:22 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Whatlovelookslike
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Runaway Rumour.

Forecast: Whatlovelookslike looks quite capable of extending her winning streak to four in this year’s edition of the Yaddo Handicap for older fillies and mares. She’ll need to spot a few pounds to her seven rivals and isn’t guaranteed a great trip from her far outside post position, but the daughter of English Channel is a progressive sort with rising speed figures and should be capable of producing another forward move for the high percentage trainer/jockey team of Todd Pletcher and Flavian Prat. She’s listed as the 5/2 morning line favorite and at that price is worth a good play in the straight pool and in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 6: Post: 3:56 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Rocket and Roll
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Rocket and Roll was somewhat disappointing in three starts last winter at Oaklawn Park but had to be stopped on and turned out, so perhaps he had a legitimate (physical) excuse for failing to perform up to expectations. The Brad Cox-trained son of Bolt d’Oro returns with a series of solid works at Belmont Park and could easily be a better type this time around, especially against state-bred rivals after tackling some very tough open foes last winter. At 5/2 on the morning line, we’re expecting that he’ll offer excellent value as a win play and a rolling exotic single.

RACE 7: Post: 4:30 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Stellamaris
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Concerti.

Forecast: She’s the only maiden in this six runner edition of the Seeking the Ante Stakes for juvenile fillies, but Stellamaris has the fastest fig in the field and from her outside draw should have every chance with clear sailing to wear down the leaders. The daughter of Catalina Cruiser is returning off short rest (two weeks) and is backing up from seven furlongs to six, but if she comes close to her first outing she should be able to handle this field. She’s listed as the 5/2 morning line favorite, so rather than spread the race we’ll take a stand with the filly whose trainer has terrific stats with the second time starter angle.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-One Headlight; 1-Whistler’s Honor.
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Here’s a grass grab bag with several possibilities. You should probably use has many as your budget allows but small ticket players may want to focus on the two listed above. One Headlight is better than his last shows, and with just our career starts on his resume he has plenty of room to improve. Irad Ortiz, Jr. stays aboard the Todd Pletcher-trained colt, who lacks tactical speed but can really turn it on late. Whistler’s Honor is guaranteed a ground-saving trip from his rail draw under Flavian Prat, and with rising speed figures in each of his four starts the Jorge Abreu-trained son of Tonalist could easily be this good.

Forecast: Weekend Rags lands the good inside draw and rates a very slight edge on top in this first level allowance turf sprint for New York-bred fillies and mares. Freshened since early July, the daughter of Street Boss has numbers that can win and room for further improvement, so at 3-1 on the morning line she’s the preferred pick. U Should B Dancing likes to settle and produce a late kick and with some help up front and clear sailing through the lane she should make here presence felt close home. We’ll try to survive and advance using just these two in rolling exotic play, but if you find the need to spread with a few more, go right ahead.

Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Drake’s Passage.

Forecast: Mariachi may be a rising star in the New York-bred sophomore ranks after earning a career top speed figure in a recent first level allowance sprint win. The son of Maclean’s Music should be capable of repeating on the raise in this year’s edition of the Albany Stakes, even though the John Kimmel-trained colt will be stretching out from six furlongs to a mile and one-eighth for the first time and is no slam dunk based on pedigree to handle two turns. However, he is the projected controlling speed and given that type of trip may be able to wire the field,. Maker’s Candy missed at 1/5 in the New York Derby at Finger Lakes last time out while finishing 13 lengths clear of the others but has prior form that makes him strictly the one to beat. He certainly projects to be the most dangerous of the closing types.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 12-Starts Now; 11-Lady Laoban; 6-Autumn
Backups/savers: 10-Shelly.

Forecast: Starts Now is stuck on the far outside in this one mile inner turf affair for state bred maiden fillies and mares but if she can drop over and get some cover without being parked wide the daughter of Mucho Macho Man should be set to earn her diploma. Second in her last three starts and adding blinkers for the first time, she rates a very slight edge on top over Lady Laoban, a close third in the same race our top pick exits despite being fractious loading into the gate, and Autumn, fourth in that common race while closing a gap but too late in just her third career start and her first since May.

Al Cimaglia: The Red Mile Pick 4 Analysis August 27, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
The Red Mile has an 11-race program ready to begin the week with a first post at 1:00 PM EST. The $1.00 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a very low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (2:35 PM EST)

1-Better Is Nice (1/1)-Winner of 3 straight, drifted way wide down the lane but still hung on by a neck on 8-15. Will look for an effective equipment change and if so, the win streak could be extended versus the same kind.
3-Tua Many Captains (7-1)-Needed to go first over and hung down the lane but did just miss. Should offer a solid price, and my take is a pocket ride might be in the cards. Could benefit from a suck-around trip and be able to seal the deal.
4-Dancin Champion (9/2)-Rallied down the lane to just miss as #1 drifted out. Tony Hall takes over for Tetrick and that should help the price. Looking for some value and the last effort may have been its best. Could surprise if close enough to the leaders turning for the wire.

Race 7 (2:54 PM EST)

1-Excalibur Bi (2-1)-Faces easier and needs to be put in play early in the mile. That will likely be Andrew McCarthy's plan against this caliber of competition. Has cashed checks versus better and should be a main player but can't completely trust.
7-Sparks Fly (5-1)-Erv Miller pupil was pace compromised in the last race on 8-15. Closed nicely off cover to come a very close second from this same post in its Red Mile debut on 8-7. Needs the right set up but is competitive and could tackle the chalk if the fractions are hot.

Race 8 (3:13 PM EST)

1-Entrench (7/2)-Drew off by over 4 lengths on 8-21 and now faces a bigger challenge. Zeron sticks with the Toscano trainee, drawing the rail shouldn't hurt, and the freshman may have more to give.
2-Lillbliss (8-1)-Brian Sears takes a seat for the first time and that might help. The last race on 8-15 versus this kind was better than the line looked. Will need to show more speed but could get an efficient trip and the price will be right to take a swing.
5-Shock Trooper (9/5)-Broke 3rd off the gate and followed the 2 chalks. Got caught behind the one who was sluggish and finished willingly when able to shake free. Wasn't a match for the winner, but Arson is not in this field. Looks like a player but will probably need to pace faster to win and might be over bet.

Race 9 (3:332 PM EST)

6-Chamba (5/2)-At this class the Ake Svanstedt pupil should be difficult to beat. Looks to have the best overall speed and can leave quick enough to take control early in the mile. Appears to be a cut above the rest, beat this kind easily last time and can double up today.

A bit worried he'll take too much cash in here, but he looks like a pretty typical second-out sprint to route player with all signs pointing to some added ground helping the cause.


#6 Double Dribble
Lots to like here on pedigree and connections, but this is one of the few areas in which this barn can underperform, so I'd want an honest enough price.


#1 Implementer
Never really confident in whether anyone from this barn is going to fire first out, but the team has done ok at the local level and might have him ready enough for a share.


Race Summary
Lucky Romance goes second out off what I'm hoping was a useful finishing effort in the debut run, and he's back quickly for this one on just a week's rest. Thinking he's going to be tough today.

She did some dirty work in the debut run when battling early and digging in to midstretch before fading, and she's probably the most committed to the front end here. Capable.


#5 Cahokia Posse
She has been well meant through both starts and gets another crack at winless runners after crossing the wire first last out. She should be right up near the splits again here and can probably play with these on the move north.


#4 Wildwood Ghaly
She moved up nicely in that second career start, but she has not shown a whole lot of early pace and has left herself too much to do in those first two tries. Guessing she can be better in her first start this season, but I'm curious what kind of number she's going to offer.


Race Summary
No Nap Needed gets the edge over a couple Becker runners who seem in the mix, and even #7 Joyzella makes sense after running second behind a winner who backed that up with a good run behind a huge favorite here the other day.

She's short on excuses at this point in her career, but she has never been in this easy and has run all her best races here while struggling in Indiana. Barn puts up great numbers with this kind.


#8 Lady White Sox
Nothing to write home about on her page, but she's in for a tag for the first time while coming out of what felt like a good race. No real confidence in her, but I wouldn't be shocked to see her chase along and land a piece.


#9 Go On Girl
She's supposed to be tough in here if she brings her best, but the price gets a lot shorter as this one drops back to the level of the claim where she was last seen finishing second at 3/5.


Race Summary
Arrington and Lady White Sox both have some appeal here, but I like that the former owns a bunch of really solid local races mixed in with dull tries next door. Think she's going to roll past these late.

TRICKY TEMPER - It looks like 'Johnny V' had to learn all about this filly on Aug 9th when riding her for the first time. Back atop again today. When 'Johnny V' and Englehart combine forces on animals the winning percentage has been good at 50. That 85 fig this filly recorded in her last event tells me she's a big time player this time. CONCERTI - Got an unlucky trip her 1st time out. Hitting the track today, should do better if she stays out of trouble. This horse is at the top in earnings per race. She looks solid in today's affair. STELLAMARIS - Ran against 'open' company in the last race, in with state breds today. Santana was aboard this filly last time out and was impressed enough to take the equine right back. Have to give this filly a good chance. Ran a strong outing last race out within the last month.

BUCK'S FIZZ - Jock hops back up on after getting to know the fine animal by riding in the last race. That's always a good tip. Nice return on investment for this rider and conditioner duo. I like that recent outing on August 6th at Woodbine where he ended up third.

The Brewers have been hot lately, the Padres not so much. Way back in April the Brewers hit probable starter for the Padres Wacha very hard. Since the Wacha has been lights out. He was off for most of July and half of August but is again on fire. Since his return on August 15th, he is 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA. Probable starter for the Brewers, Houser, has been up and down the last while with an ERA of 4.70 and a WHIP of 1.17 in his last 3.

Both bullpens have solid help available with a slight edge to the Brewers. Both teams have been mediocre at the plate over the last 15 days so it should come down to the pitchers. With Wacha doing his thing and the rest being equal the Padres will come out on top.

Even if they don't have its star guard, Allisha Gray, I like Atlanta to beat Indiana. Gray has missed the last two games because of an ankle injury. She's the Dream's second-leading scorer at 17.5 points per game.

Obviously it's a nice bonus if Gary plays - she's listed as questionable - but Atlanta should beat the Fever without her.

Atlanta is a middle-of-the-road team, while Indiana ranks with Seattle and Phoenix as among the three-worst teams in the WNBA. The Fever are riding a season-high two game win streak. Those victories, however, were against Seattle and Phoenix. The 10-24 Fever haven't won three in a row all season.

Atlanta should have halted Los Angeles' six-game win streak this past Friday. The Dream let a 16-point lead slip away in an 83-78 loss. Atlanta coach Tanisha Wright ripped her team following that defeat citing lack of toughness both mentally and physically.

Players usually respond well when a coach questions their toughness.

The Dream beat the Fever, 100-94, when the teams last met in Indianapolis back on June 18. It was the fourth straight point spread cover for the Dream in Indianapolis. The Dream also won and covered in their last game against the Fever, defeating them, 82-73, as 8-point home favorites on August 6.

Now, they send out ace Luis Castillo who counters an 0-6 rookie for KC.

This is a clear cut mismatch as Castillo has an ERA just over 3, while the Royals Marsh owns a 5.56 ERA.

Some trends to note, Kansas City are 1-6 SU in their last 7 games, are 0-5 SU in their last 5 games against Seattle, and are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games on the road. I'll take my chances with the OVER 9 in Sunday's series finale between the Reds and Diamondbacks. Both of these offenses come in swinging a hot bat. Reds have put up 7 or more runs in 4 of their last 5 games. Arizona has scored 6 or more in 5 of their last 7. I expect more of the same. I know Cincinnati's Graham Ashcraft has pitched better of late, but I think some of that is who he's faced. I would be surprised if he was able to cool off this red-hot Diamondbacks team.
