(5%) DENVER (Money-line) I really like the way this one sets up. After getting destroyed by the Dolphins, the winless Broncos absolutely needed to bounce back and beat the Bears. Things didn't start well; the Broncos found themselves in a big hole. They didn't panic though. Rather, they rallied all the way back for a 31-28 victory. Not only was it their first win under Sean Payton, it was the type of comeback which they can absolutely build positive momentum from.

The Denver defense, which had admittedly been playing poorly and which was dealing with some injuries, really stands to build from the performance. Linebacker Jonathon Cooper who scored a TD (one of two late takeaways by the defense) to help with the comeback, had this to say of the entire defense: “I don't think we blinked once. Like even with how the game was going and even with everything, everybody kept their composure. Everybody stuck together, kept fighting — and that's what a team does.”

The Jets were facing a tougher opponent. So, it wasn't completely shocking to see them fall behind early against the Chiefs. To their credit, much like the Broncos did against Chicago, the Jets fought all the way back. However, unlike the Broncos, they came up short. It seems that many people feel the Jets' (near) comeback was also the type that a team can build momentum from. I don't see it working that way though. Coming all the way back and nearly winning, in a primetime game with Taylor Swift and others in attendance, only to come up short, is going to prove difficult.

With the Bills and Dolphins both off to 3-1 starts, the 1-3 Jets know that their season is in trouble. Their next two home games are against the Eagles and Chargers. Tough opponents. The Broncos are suddenly believing that they can get back in the race. Two of their next three come against the division leading Chiefs. So, they have the ability to help themselves. Those games won't matter if they can't take care of business here though.

The Jets defense is tough but the offense is still only averaging 15.5 points per game. Denver averages 25.
These teams faced each other in 2021 and 2022. The home team won both. I expect home field to again prove the difference, the Broncos earning their first “Mile High” victory under Payton.

4-Unit NFL: (470) Denver Broncos -2.5 -110 over New York Jets (10/8/2023 @ 4:25PM ET) Here we are once again on this debacle of a football team. We were lucky to push with them last weekend, but we still have faith. They have failed to cover a spread so far this season, but that is why we are getting a solid buy-low situation. In database history, teams that have failed to cover a spread in their first four games of the season, are 56.7% ATS. This improves to 59.3% when at home. The Jets are getting an unfair bump from the market after taking the Chiefs down to the wire, but KC haven't been themselves at all so far this season despite their record of 3-1. Russell Wilson ranks significantly higher than Zach Wilson in a variety of metrics such as QB Rating, Overall Rating, TD Passes, INT Rate, and Yards Per Game. Solid spot for the Broncos who are back home after a momentum building road victory.


5-Unit NFL: (474) San Francisco 49ers -180 over Dallas Cowboys (10/8/2023 @ 8:20PM ET) This should be a fun one, but the 49ers are for real. Both teams have played well, but we've been far more impressed with San Francisco based on a variety of predictive metrics. We struggle to ignore the Week 3 slip up from the Cowboys losing as 11 point favorites to the Arizona Cardinals. You need complete consistency to beat this 49ers team on the road. San Francisco have played close to perfect football, and we see no reason to not back them here. This is a large price to lay, but as long-term subscribers will know; we've been highly successful on these moneyline situations. Of course; these are not guaranteed by any means, and we do mathematical derivative pricing to determine if we should lay the points and hit the ML. This is a specific spot where the ML price has more expected value than the spread. However; we do see value on both so bet accordingly based on your own risk tolerance. The 49ers will be excited to show off their stellar home defense against the Cowboys offense. Last season, SF allowed less than 13 points per game at home, and they are right around that number again this season. Simply put; they are the more complete team compared to Dallas.

2 Unit Play. Take #451 Jacksonville Jaguars +5.5 over Buffalo Bills (9:30a.m., Sunday, October 8 NFLN) Always like backing the Jaguars in London. Buffalo is coming off a dominating game against a division opponent, and look for there to be a letdown for them in this game. They are the home team, and that will frustrate their rabid fan base and allow Jacksonville to cover the spread. Sooner or later, Trevor Lawrence is going to have a breakout game, and I look for it to come on Sunday. Jacksonville takes this game down to the wire, and we collect with whoever comes out on top.

3 Unit Play. Take #462 New England Patriots (pk) over New Orleans Saints (1p.m., Sunday, October 8 CBS) TOP NFL PLAY OF THE WEEK. The Saints laid an egg last week at home against Tampa Bay, and it appears Derek Carr rushed back to that game. Now they face another desperate team in New England, a team that was a no show against Dallas last week. I always expect NFL teams to bounce back after a dud performance and feel the difference in this game will be the health of each quarterback.

7 Unit Play. Take #474 San Francisco 49ers -3.5 over Dallas Cowboys (8:20p.m., Sunday, October 8 NBC) Dallas just does not beat San Francisco, and we will lay the points with the home team on Sunday Night Football. San Francisco is 12-1 in their last 13 home games when they are the favorite. The 49ers have also won 14 regular season games in a row. If San Francisco does not beat themselves in this game, they will win it by double digits. Dallas has some great flashes, but under Coach McCarthy they cannot be trusted in big games against better teams.

4 Unit Play. Take #475 Green Bay Packers +1 over Las Vegas Raiders (8:15p.m., Monday, October 9 ESPN) Just not a fan of the Raiders this season with their coach/quarterback combination. They are coming off 3 straight defeats, and the last two were against teams that might not even make the playoffs. Green Bay is a better team than what their 2-2 record indicates, and they do not want to fall below .500 with this young quarterback. The Packers will have a huge crowd in Las Vegas for this game, and expect no home field advantage for the Raiders. Josh McDaniels can only beat the Broncos, as they struggled against every other team. The Packers have beaten the Raiders 8 straight games.

The Eagles will be without Fletcher Cox but have great depth in their front seven. The Rams don’t have the best offensive line and should often see their QB on the turf. Matthew Stafford could be more mobile, so playing against an athletic defense at his age will be tough. Analysis:I wouldn’t want to be the team playing the Patriots following the worst loss of Bill Belichick’s career. This remains a solid New England defense despite the lopsided score against the Cowboys. They were on the field for a huge portion of that game and although the performance was poor, this is a solid spot to “buy low” on New England. There are definitely some issues on the offensive side of the ball, but the Saints scored just 9 points on 197 total yards in a home loss to the Bucs. They averaged 3.2 yards per play and Derek Carr was far from impressive. The Saints have now scored 21 points or less in 10 consecutive games, with things unlikely to improve against what will no doubt be a motivated Patriots group. Carr is currently questionable as this is written, but it’s clear that he’s hurt and this will be a play whether he suits up or not. While New England’s offense definitely needs work, I expect a bounce back from them on Sunday against a New Orleans team we can only look to fade. Take the Patriots.
