FRANK’S CUTTING ROOM FLOOR FOR THURSDAY, 2/1:

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Thursday afternoon is with Eric Cole versus Sungjae Im in Round One head-to-head props. Cole missed the cut last week at the Farmers Insurance Open — but he had six top 15 finishes in his previous last nine tournaments including three top 21 or better results in his previous three tournaments in 2024. Cole is not long Off-the-Tee — but that will not be a handicap for him this week with the Pebble Beach course consisting of 6972 yards and Spyglass which will host one of the first two opening rounds being of 7041 yards. Cole was strong in his rookie year with his irons — he ranked 19th on the PGA Tour in Shots-Gained: Approach the Green. Sungjae Im is not in good form right now after following up a tie for 25th place at the American Express by missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. Im ranks 53rd on the Tour in 2024 in Shots-Gained: Approach the Green — and that is not a good sign with bad weather on the horizon this week. Take Cole versus Im in Round One head-to-head props. This is a free play on WOLVES.
So Wolverhampton comes into this home match versus Manchester United undefeated in their last eight matches. They have scored more goals (30) than Manchester United (24). Erik Ten Hag has lost control at Old Trafford, and has sent out Jadon Sancho on loan and has since been feuding with Marcus Rashford. It seems pretty clear that the players are not buying into Ten Hag, and Manchester United has no business being favored here. The Red Devils are 0-3-1 in their last four away matches, and this looks like a case of two teams trending in the opposite direction.

Thursday CBB Free play. My selection is on Stanford over Arizona State at 9 pm et on Thursday.
This will be the second meeting between these teams after Arizona State delivered a 76-73 upset win at Stanford back in late December. Both teams limp into this matchup off losses - in Arizona State's case consecutive defeats. After a hot start to the Pac-12 campaign, the Sun Devils have lost four of their last five games both SU and ATS. Despite holding six straight opponents to fewer than 60 field goal attempts they've still allowed four of their last six foes to knock down at least 26 field goals. Stanford is actually coming off one of its better defensive efforts as it held Cal to just 25-of-61 shooting. Unfortunately, the Cardinal offense was non-existent in that 73-71 loss (they shot 23-of-58 from the field). Note that Stanford has yet to lose consecutive games in-conference this season. Arizona State has now taken three straight meetings in this series. It hasn't defeated Stanford in four straight matchups since 2016-17. The Cardinal check in 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games when seeking revenge for a loss in which it allowed 75 points or more against an opponent. Stanford is also 9-6 ATS in its last 15 games following a loss by six points or less. Meanwhile, Arizona State is 4-7 ATS in its last 11 contests following a road loss in Pac-12 play. Take Stanford.

Give him a pass for the two-back run against better and the form starts to look pretty appealing. The Turfway run was solid, and he might wind up finding a decent spot tracking the pace today.


#4 Broadway Sky
Nothing to write home about in the comeback at Woodbine in December, but the form here last year would obviously make him a player if he is at all able to run back to it. Tough call for me.


#2 Fivefive Six Champ
Speed might wind up being too good for these while dropping price for the local debut, but the Gulfstream form is at times spotty, and I wonder if one or two others might be able to keep him just honest enough early.


Race Summary
Category Ten might be a good fit at this local level right now, and I think the potential race shape gives him a chance to get the run of things.

Race shape is a mild worry, but I'm hoping a couple forward players bother the chalk early, and this guy has proven to be a really honest finisher. Mild upset?


#3 Time the Avenger
Think the price might be short enough here that it's worth playing against him, but he's the clear one to beat based on his graduation run early this year. Maybe there's just enough prompting pace to keep him honest?


#8 El Bambino
He might be able to draft into a really nice spot while spying the pace, and I wouldn't be totally surprised to see his grinding one-turn form translate well going long.


Race Summary
Plain or Peanut was a decent fit with this type of company last out when getting over the local footing again, and he has some back route form that is interesting enough at a midrange price.

#7 Swayback Mobil
I'll take my chances on a strong lean in the finale, as I think he's a pretty solid trip horse off the debut run. He was off the pace after the start before making a wide and sustained middle move, flattening out in the final eighth. I love seeing that kind of move from a debuter who might benefit from having a bit more foundation the second time around.


#3 Weekend Retreat
He finished in front of the top choice when they met last time out, but I'm not 100% sure I trust him to run right back to that big try. Still, he's the one to beat with a pace edge on this group.


#1 Go Tothe Principal
Nothing from him in the debut try, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something a little bit better from him in a race that doesn't feel like it has much depth.


Race Summary
Swayback Mobil moved well before tiring in the debut try, but I'm guessing there is still a bit more here at what should be a fair price. Doesn't hurt that the barn has been going lights out so far this year.

In a field loaded with class droppers and runners plagued by bad starts, KHOZANKA is worth a price shot at 12-1 on the morning line. She chased the 1-to-5 winner to the stretch first out, then was eliminated at the break in a fast-paced follow-up. Bet to win and place.
