South Carolina at Vanderbilt [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

South Carolina (-10, O/U 41): Steve Spurrier went with junior Tommy Beecher at quarterback in the opener against NC State but after Beecher tossed four interceptions and injured his shoulder, sophomore Chris Smelley came in and led three touchdown drives. It’s Smelley who gets the start tonight but while all the talk surrounds the quarterback position at South Carolina, it’s the Gamecocks defense that deserves the attention. South Carolina held the Wolfpack to just 138 yards and pitched a shutout, despite being put in bad spots because of the offense’s turnovers. The Gamecocks will be looking to avenge a 17-6 home loss to Vandy last year when South Carolina was ranked sixth in the country.

South Carolina is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 road games.
South Carolina is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - QB Tommy Beecher (concussion) is doubtful.

Vanderbilt: This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Vanderbilt but the Commodores started the season off on a high note by blasting Miami, OH, 34-13, in their opener. The story for Vandy in Week 1 was QB Chris Nickson, who ran for 166 yards on 20 carries. Nickson will probably have to throw the ball more tonight against a South Carolina defense that smothered NC State’s rushing attack in their opener. However, Vandy has a pretty impressive defensive unit of its own. Considered the strength of the team coming into the year, the Commodores held Miami to under 100 yards rushing. One negative is head coach Bobby Johnson is 0-7 ATS at Vanderbilt when coming off a win of 21 points or more.

Vandy is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 games in September.
Vandy is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games following a SU win.

Key Injuries - RB Jeff Jennings (shoulder) is questionable.
LB Brandon Bryant (leg) is doubtful.

Thursday's Game

Vanderbilt beat South Carolina 17-6 LY, first time Commodores ever beat Steve Spurrier; that loss sent Gamecocks on 0-5 skid to end disappointing season. SC ran ball 22 times for just 46 yds in game LY. Vandy covered four of last 13 as home dog. 'cocks are 3-1 as road favorite under Spurrier; they play Georgia next week, but doubt they look ahead after LY's debacle. Both sides won their opener in fairly impressive fashion last week.

Friday's Game
Ball State has one of nation's best QBs (Davis) but Navy keeps control of ball, running for 521 yards in a 34-31 OT loss to Ball State LY (TY was 585-539, Navy-- Davis was 19-33/277 passing). Cardinals are 8-3 vs spread in last eleven games as a home fave, but Middies are 14-4 as road
underdog since '02. Cardinals had good balance in LY's game
(262 rushing yards, 277 passing).

Duke upset Northwestern LY, just their second series win in last nine tries; win ended the 22-game Duke losing skid. Blue Devils beat I-AA JMU last week, while Wildcats outgained Syracuse 484-225 in 30-10 win,
so winner here is 2-0. Wildcats are 7-2 as road favorite since ’01. Duke is 3-13 vs spread as home dog the last three seasons, but has more optimistic outlook under new coach Cutcliffe.

Boston College went on road last week with new QB, new RBs, and five new OL on their two-deep and beat Kent 21-0, with zero penalties, zero turnovers- very well-coached team. BC won 24-10 LY at Georgia Tech- Ryan was 30-44/435 passing. Paul Johnson was 12-3 as road dog at Navy- Tech ran ball for 349 yards in their tuneup last week, and even averaged nine yards/pass attempt. BC is 8-5-2 as home favorite the last three seasons.

Skip Holtz is 26-11 vs pointspread at East Carolina; his Pirates outgained Virginia Tech 369-243 last week, and found way to win late with a blocked punt. West Virginia crushed ECU 48-7 LY (-24), outgaining Pirates 599-160. first road test for Stewart as WVa’s HC; Mountaineers gave up 266 passing yards to I-AA Villanova last week, and were outgained by 15 yards in game they led 24-7 at half and won easily.

Southern Miss scored 51 points on ULL last week, now moves way up in class, facing Auburn club that held ULM to 220 yards (2-18 on 3rd down) in 34-0 spanking last week. USM lost last five games vs. SEC (2-3 vs spread), with losses by 14-29-9-27-20 points. USM outrushed Cajuns 427-263 last week- they better tighten up diverse Auburn attack. Tigers have SEC opener up next, could hold back some here.

Brian Kelly is 25-8-1 vs. spread in his last 34 games as coach; Cincinnati is 15-8-2 vs. spread as road dog since ‘01, faces solid Oklahoma club that was up 50-0 at half last week vs outmanned I-AA opponent. Sooners Bearcats also coasted vs outmanned foe last week, leading 26-0 at half. Oklahoma is 9-3-1 vs. spread as home favorite the last two seasons- doubt they’ll look ahead to next week’s road trip to Washington.

Florida lost six games in row vs Miami, last beating ‘canes in ’85; they lost 27-10 to Miami in a peach Bowl game, last time teams met, but Gators have large edge here- they forced six Hawai’i turnovers last week, winning 56-10 even though they had 13 penalties for 90 yards. Miami crushed its I-AA foes; they get starting QB Marve back from suspension here, so he can make first collegiate start in very tough spot.

Texas Tech brings its aerial circus to Reno, Red Raiders are just 5-9 as road favorite since ‘04. Nevada ran ball for 426 yards vs. I-AA foe last week but turned it over three times; they’ll need to run ball to keep it away from Harrell and gifted 6-3 WR Crabtree, who originally went to Tech as hooper. Tech allowed 341 yards passing and had 18 penalties for 169 yards last week, stupid-high numbers, but they also passed for 536 yards in easy win vs. Eastern Washington.

Oregon State came east LY and got waxed 34-3 in Cincinnati on a Thursday night when they favored; Beavers lost opener last week at Stanford, stares 0-2 start in face at Happy Valley. OSU is 6-8 as road dog since ‘04. Penn State scored 66 or Coastal Carolina’s Chanticleers (roosters) last week; they’re 10-5-1 vs. spread as home favorite last three years. Lions’ early schedule is lame; no lookaheads until October.

Wyoming lost last two years to Air Force, 31-24/20-12; they outgained Falcons 404-340 LY, but had -4 turnover ratio in game, giving up 256 rushing yards. Air Force won seven of last eight games overall, is 7-0 vs. spread in last seven. Cowboys rallied late last week to beat Ohio 21-20, second year in row they beat Bobcats by single point. Ohio hurt them more through air; not sure if Air Force has similar capability.

Washington got crushed 44-10 at Oregon last week, even with Ducks playing much of game with 3rd-string QB; Huskies are very young- they gave up 496 yards last week- 241 on ground, 255 in air. BYU is 7-4 as road favorite; they beat up on Northern Iowa (Kurt Warner’s alma mater) 41-17 last week, but lost four fumbles and gave up 213 passing yards, including long TD on trick play. Huskies are 5-3 as home dog.

Texas A&M lost 18-14 at home to Arkansas State last week, going scoreless in second half, while New Mexico lost 26-3 at home to TCU in MWC opener; Lobo QB Porterie was hurt (head/neck), not sure of his status here. Aggies are 6-9 as road favorite; they had four turnovers last week, were outgained by 112 yards, so result was no fluke. Lobos had only nine FDs last week, are 9-7-1 vs. spread as home underdog.

Ole Miss drilled Memphis last week in Nutt’s Oxford debut; they were outgained 453-438 by Tigers, but led 27-10 at half and were never seriously threatened. Wake Forest went to Waco and crushed Baylor 41-13, forcing five turnovers behind third-year starting QB Skinner. Wake went to Oxford in ’06 and easily beat Rebels 27-3, but Ole Miss has much better coach, QB this season. Wake was 3-1 as home favorite LY, after being 2-13-1 before that; Rebels are 13-15 as road dog.

Keep in mind Temple was booted from Big East so UConn could join, and Owls are only team in nation with all 22 starters back from LY. Huskies won tough 22-17 game LY, (TY 378-322); they waxed I-AA Hofstra 35-3 in opener last week. Temple ran kick back for scored, socked Army 35-7, though they had just 84 yards on 30 rushed vs. Cadets. Huskies are 7-2 as road favorite. Owls are 9-4 as home dog.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

13) Brendan Morrow came within four outs of being the first pitcher since 1953 to throw no-hitter in his first big league start

12) Streaky Dodgers won fifth game in row, moved with half a game of Arizona in NL West, with Rockies five games back.

11) If Sarah Palin looked like Roseanne Barr, would she still be a Vice-Presidential candidate? If you answer no, then what you are saying is that she truly isn't qualified.

10) University of Virginia banned signs from sporting events, after some negative signs popped up last season; the place Thomas Jefferson founded is curtailing freedom of expression?

9) Last five teams that won NFC South finished under .500 the next season.

8) John Calipari's support staff at Memphis is listed at twelve people. Almost one support person for every player.

7) Alex Rodriguez routinely gets booed, a symbol of failures that will keep Bronx Bombers from playoffs. Bronx fans down in Tampa this week were even wearing bags on their heads, but how come Derek Jeter never gets blamed for any of this?

6) 10 of the Redskins' 22 starters are over thirty years old.

5) Do NASCAR drivers lose their hearing later in life? Seems like always being in such a loud environment wouldn't be so good for your hearing.

4) What would Chad Johnson do if he got traded to the Rams, where number 85 is retired (Jack Youngblood)?

3) I don't know what they told Brett Myers in the minors, but he has come back to Philadelphia and been a dominant force.

2) Cubs are having an awful week; Zambrano, Harden are said to be nursing sore arms. Things aren't looking as rosy for the Cubbies as they were a few weeks ago.

1) Francisco Liriano won again for the Twins, who are in close race with White Sox for AL Central title. Loser probably won't win the Wild Card. Think the Twins wish they brought Liriano up a start or two sooner?
