9* MARSHALL (+3½) vs. Cincinnati (Friday night)—Cincy QB injuries and what figures to be a wild home crowd
pulling for Thundering Herd in an ESPN extravaganza reasons enough to take a flyer with Marshall...

GOLDSHEET

*MARSHALL 20 - Cincinnati 16—Bearcats down to their 3rd-string QB (see
Special Ticker). Clever Cincy mentor Kelly, who’s covered 66% of his games
as a head coach since ‘05, still owns superior defensive depth & speed in thismatchup. Can maturing Marshall RS frosh QB Cann find enough openings in
Bearcats’ leaky pass coverage to lead Herd to its sixth straight victory at
Huntington? TV—ESPN

(07-CINCINNATI -24 40-14...SR: Cincinnati 7-3-1)

*Byu 48 - UTAH STATE 13—WAC sources insist USU not as helpless as
recent editions, especially with unheralded QB Borel adding some spark to new
option looks in Aggie attack. But high-flying BYU in no mood to cut any slack
to lower-profile state rival, and BCS-dreamin’ Cougs might want to match the
damage done by mortal enemy Utah, which won big at Logan (58-10) a few
weeks ago.

3* on Boston Red Sox +120
(Listing Matsuzaka only)

Reasons why the Red Sox win Friday:

1.) Teams that win Game 1 really have a great chance to win their next game as well. After beating the Angels 4-1 on Wednesday, the Red Sox will come back with Daisuke Matsuzaka and steal Game 2. The system we show you is the reason why the Sox have such a great chance to win tonight. We’ll Play On - All underdogs with a money line of +100 to +150 (BOSTON) - in a playoff game, after a win. This is a 36-15 ML System hitting 70.6% over the last 5 seasons. Now all of the pressure is on the Angels since Boston has stolen their home-field advantage after a Game 1 victory.

2.) Angels choke against Boston in the postseason. The Angels are currently riding a 10-game postseason losing streak to the Red Sox. This is a ghost they simply cannot shake. The Red Sox have the Angels’ number, and Ervin Santana doesn’t have the stones to overcome it tonight. The Angels last won a playoff game against the Red Sox during the 1986 AL Championship Series to take a 3-1 series lead. Boston went on to win the series in seven games, then swept ALDS matchups with its AL West counterpart in 2004 and 2007. Bet Boston on the road.

Game: Cincinnati U @ Marshall Thundering Herd - Friday October 3, 2008 8:00 pm
Pick: 3 units ATS: Marshall Thundering Herd +3.5 (-110)

We'll go with under the radar dog Marshall in this game, as they already have had a major upset win TY (34-27 win at SoMiss, as 7 point dogs), and are 4-1 ATS as home dogs (with average score a one point win in those 5 homers) L3Y under current HC Mark Snyder. And their frosh QB McCann has shown a surprising amount of poise for a guy playing in his first season of Div I CFB. For example, in that win at So Miss, he completed 16-25 passes for 228 YP with two TDPs and no INTs, and in narrow 17-16 home win over memphis the week before, his numbers were not quite as impressive, but he made no mistakes and passed well enough to not only gain nearly 200 YP but also open things up for emerging star RB Darius Marshall (great name for a star RB at Marshall), who gained 140 of the Herd's 180 YR (for 5.4 YPC) that game. And in that So Miss game, RB Marshall gained 112 of the herd's 200 YR, which "loosened" things up nicely for QB McCann, no doubt contributing to the young QB's huge game.

But things aren't so rosy on Cincy's side of the field, as despite Bearcats' 3-1 record (with only loss at top rated Oklahoma), they have already lost their top two QBs in just 4 games, with the latest casualty being Tony Pike, who broke his non-throwing arm in 3Q of LW's narrow win at Akron, while Cincy's defense held on for the win with the offense contributing just 3 4Q points and #3 QB Zach Collaro (a RS frosh) completing just 1 of 4 for two yards -- that won't move the chains, or even make them blink. So crafty Cincy HC Brian Kelly (who went 10-3 LY in his first year at Cincy and 9-3 ATS in lined games) faces a dilemma in this game -- does he start the inexperienced Callaro, or does he turn the offense over to RS ND transfer Demetrius Jones? Remember him from two years ago at ND? He seemed to have potential, but never did much at ND, thus his demotion by Irish HC Charlie Weis and his frustration and ultimate transfer to Cincy. With individual team totals line at 26 for cincy and their QB situation unsettled, leaving the offense a big ??, plus fact that Marshall has shown they can contain an offense (Memphis, who they held to 17 points) at least as good as Cincy's (with a #3 QB), we also like the under 26 for total # of points to be scored tonite by Cincy.

With Marshall chafing to avenge LY's lopsided road loss to a much better (than TY's) Cincy team, and having a bye next week, we will be sure to get maximum effort from them. But with Cincy having easily beaten this team LY (albeit at home) and starting Big East conf play next week against Rutgers, we're not so sure that Bearcats will give an equally intense effort. And we all have seen the way home crowds at these mid-major schools like Marshall go nuts on the rare occasions when their team is on ESPN nat. tv, so we also expect a very vocal, supportive crowd urging the Herd to victory.

While we're not predicting an outright Herd victory, we expect Marshall to keep things tight enough to at least cover if not win, so we will opt for this 3.5 point "cushion," and would pass at anything less than +3 points for Herd. And with line now at 3 at some books and still 3.5 at others, we suggest grabbing +3.5 points ASAP while you still can get it. As usual, consider teasing Marshall up to +10> points with one or two of our other CFB picks for saturday.

And as stated above, we also like Cincy under 26 points (for two units) on individual team totals line.

Under 48 Points Cincinnati @ Marshall

I can't see this game getting above 34 points. I really can't. I mean, maybe there might be a defensive score or a special teams TD that will lead to some points but even with that, getting this game to go over in my mind will require double overtime and if that happens, there's nothing we can do.

Cincinnati is starting their third string QB in this game who just happens to be a freshman who has only thrown 4 passes in his career and completed just 1 of them. If this kid produces points, I'll be shocked. When you start a young inexperienced QB on the road, your gameplan has to be to run the ball and try to take pressure off him. That's what Cincy will do tonight, they will run the ball and that will keep the clock moving. A third string QB will not be allowed to win or lose the game. They'll max protect him to keep him standing and they'll run the ball all night long to keep from getting in long yardage situations.

As for Marshall, all they do is run the ball and Cincy does have a good rush defense so for this team to score tonight, they are gonna to have to convert in the passing game and since their starting QB completes just 50% of his passes, I don't see that happening as well.

Look for a low scoring game with the clock constantly moving with all the running these teams will be doing. Take the under here.

3 Unit Play. #11 Take Cincinnati over Marshall (Friday 8:00 pm ESPN) The Thundering Herd got run over by an average West Virginia team on last Saturday and expect history to fully repeat itself this Friday with another Big East team having their way with a mid-major for sixty minutes. Marshall has not beating anyone of significance and the Bearcats only loss in 2008 has come against Oklahoma, the number one team in the land. Coach Brian Kelly continues to improve this squad and the Cats have beaten Marshall seven of 11 times (1 tie). Coach Kelly is also fared well against non-conference teams going 7-2 against the number. The Big East continues to be a must play in non-conference games and the Cats will walk out of Huntington with a convincing victory on Friday night.

Both teams have inexperienced QB's and Marshall plays decent home defense. I just do not see how both teams will put up enough points to make this high scoring. The Bearcats barley got by Akron and it will be tough for them to win tonight. Look for both teams to run the ball a lot making this a quick low scoring game. Take the Under.
