Premium Pick:

New York Jets @ 308 New England Patriots

The Jets are in a good moment right now, with 3-0 on their last 3 games and the impression that I have is that the team is improving and becoming better game after game and that's especially important to understand that this team is better than the one who faced the Patriots on week 2. When that happens and the team has revenge, then the spot becomes very strong and the Jets are today in a very favorable position, especially when they dogs in this game, as it only gives them more value. I remember one trend that I've found: teams, who are revenging a home loss against an opponent, are 22-4 on the last 10 seasons in games involving two good teams (60% to 75%) in the second half of the season.

I've also have to refer that these two teams had a short week for this game and they will come to it in different conditions. While the Jets have easily defeated the Rams by 47-3 and so, they could save some energies for this game, the Patriots had a divisional game against the Bills, which was surely much harder and more tiring than the game of the Jets. Adalius Thomas is the new player on the injury list of the Pats and he will be missed much more than most people may think he will. Thomas was able to rush and drop back into coverage, and his size meant the Pats were covered against the run in the nickel. It will be impossible for one player to replace him. I remember he was the team's leader in terms of sacks with 5 until now. Matt Cassel has been better and he has improved a lot, however if we noticed the last game of the Patriots against the Bills, he had 9 rush plays for 34 pass attempts. This shows that sometimes he hasn't been able to find any offensive solutions and that he is obligated to run with the football. This will be a concern for this game, as the Jets are second in the NFL in sacks (31) and first in forced fumbles (13). If the Pats allowed 3 sacks against the Rams, no sacks against the Colts and 1 sack last week against the Bulls, today's challenge will be much harder to pass.

The offense of the Jets is well balanced. Thomas Jones leads the AFC in rushing yards (750), with the Jets being the 9th best rushing team on the league, with 123.4 yards/game. Without Adalius Thomas, the Patriots will struggle a lot on this matchup. The X factor of this game will be between the run defense of the Jets and the RB's of the Pats. The Pats have been using their rushing game in order to win their last game, in fact they have outplayed their opponents on the floor on the last 6 games they've played: +67, +8, +151, +8, +93 and +84 rushing yards than their opponents. But today they will face a top rush defense team. The Jets are the 5th best team on the league in rush defense, with 76.4 rushing yards allowed per game and all the edge the Pats had on their last game is gone on this week's game.

The Jets lost at home against the Pats by 10-19 earlier this season. Even though the Patriots outgained the Jets by just four yards, they took advantage of a Favre interception and a missed field goal by Jay Feely to beat the Jets for the 13th time in the last 16 meetings. This quote from a Jets played defines what this game is all about:

"After that game, it was disappointing, but we knew we had to keep moving on," New York defensive end Shaun Ellis said. "One thing I remember people saying in that locker room after the game was, 'We'll have another shot.' Here's our opportunity, so we have to go out and get a win in their home stadium."

Take the NY Jets in here.

Game: Buffalo at Akron Nov 13 2008 7:00PM
Prediction: Buffalo
Reason: With hopes of a Mid-American Conference championship still flickering, Buffalo travels to Akron in what is being called one of the Bulls' biggest regular season games in school history. A victory would make Buffalo bowl eligible for the first time since the program became a Division I-A program in 1999. A berth to the International Bowl could be on the horizon. The biggest factor in this game is that Buffalo is already a perfect 4-0 ATS when playing the roll of underdog and 2-0 ATS off a win against a conference rival. And it’s also interesting to note that Akron is 0-1 ATS this year when the line is +3 to –3. My Thursday Night Game of the Year is on BUFFALO U.!

Game: Virginia Tech at Miami FL Nov 13 2008 7:45PM
Prediction: Miami FL
Reason: MIAMI – Virginia Tech has held the upper hand in this series but a lot has changed about each of these teams comparing last season to this season. This is why, even though the Hurricanes got blown out by the Hokies last season, the Canes are the play this season in the “rematch”. Last season Miami lost to Virginia Tech by thirty points but it was at a time when nothing was going right for the Hurricanes program. This season the Canes are a solid 6-3 on the season and they’ve won four straight games. The Miami defense has really stepped up as they’ve allowed 17 points or less in three of their last four games! The Canes are well rested here as they haven’t played since their OT win over Virginia on the 1st of the month. Also, Miami’s two-QB system seems to be panning out very well and Miami is getting solid production from a young group of wide receivers! Note that this is Miami’s final home game this season and they’ve played very well at Dolphin Stadium as this was their first season in it after moving over from the Orange Bowl. The Canes have enjoyed their new home field and being at home for this game certainly gives them a key edge in trying to stay alive in the ACC race. The extra time they’ve had off in comparison with Virginia Tech is also an edge. The Hokies had to play last Thursday (versus Maryland) and, so far this season, ACC teams have had a big edge when they are rested and their opponent is not. The rested team has gotten the win in nearly every single instance! The Hokies have a reputation for performing well in primetime games and they are use to having the cameras in Blacksburg for big games. However, with this game being in Miami and with the Canes having the rest edge, things are shaping up a little different for this one and yet many will still buy into the Hokies current string of success in Thursday night TV games! Virginia Tech does not have much of a passing attack and that means the Canes can stack the line to stop the run as they basically challenge the Hokies quarterbacks to beat them through the air. That is unlikely to occur and note that Virginia Tech has scored 23 points or less in all five of their ACC games. The Canes, although not known as an offensive powerhouse, certainly have weapons on that side of the ball and they’ve erupted for 39 points versus Florida State and 49 points at Duke in a pair of impressive offensive performances within the ACC this season. Take the more balanced offense in this match-up as that will key a solid home win for the Canes as they continue their impressive run. Miami is seeking it’s fifth straight win while Virginia Tech was coming off back to back losses before finally getting back on track against Maryland last week. Miami sends Virginia Tech tumbling right back down here as they hand their third loss in their last four games. That’s the value of momentum and confidence in College Football and, right now, the Canes have it while the Hokies do not!

mti side play of the year!
Game: New York Jets at New England Patriots Nov 13 2008 8:15PM
Prediction: New England Patriots
Reason: For the second straight week the Patriots are 3’ point home favorites over a divisional opponent with whom they are tied for the division lead. We liked the Pats last week and we like them again here.
The Jets had a “laugher” last week. They humiliated the Rams 47-3 and they were up 40-0 at the half. It wasn’t Brett Favre running up the score either. He was 14-of-19 passing and did not throw an interception for the first time in seven games. With a big lead the Jets featured the run and accumulated 206 rushing yards. This is not a good sign for them. NY is 0-15 ATS off a game in which they rushed for at least fifty yards more than their season-to-date average, as long as it didn’t take them more than 42 rushes to do it. The Jets are 1-14 straight up in this situation, with their only win by a 28-24 margin laying 13 points. Clearly, NY has not lived up to the linesmakers’ expectations in this spot.
The Jets are also terrible when their passing game was efficient. NY is 0-15 ATS (-8.0 ppg) as a dog when they had fewer than ten incompletions last week. This trend was active in week three this season on Monday Night football when the Jets got annihilated 49-28 by the Chargers.
In a related trend, we note that the Jets are 0-7 ATS (-9.6 ppg) the week after they attempted at least ten fewer passes than their season-to-date average at home.
The last nail in the coffin for the Jets is that they are 0-6 ATS the week after a 20+ point win, losing every game straight up.
Although the final scoring doesn’t indicate it, the Patriots dominated the Bills last week. New England had 24 first downs and the Bills had only ten. The Patriots had 37:40 of possession time and 370 yards of offense vs the Bills 168. Buffalo’s lone TD drive came inside the two-minute warning off an 85-yard kickoff return with the Pats up 20-3 New England’s defense held the Bills to 108 yards passing and this is a good sign. The Patriots are 10-0-1 the week after holding their opponent to less than 21 points and at least 100 passing yards fewer than their season-to-date average. Finally, the Jets have had a ball-control offense this season, averaging 32:03 this season. The Patriots have had no trouble at all vs such teams, as they are 7-0 SU and 7-0 ATS as a favorite over any team that has averaged at least 32 minutes of possession time season to date, winning by an average of 16.3 ppg and covering by an average of 11.7 ppg. Unlike last week, Brett Favre will be pressed into action and he has proven he will turn the ball over under these circumstances. His brain in still 24, but his arm and legs are 39 years old. Belichick will have a game plan designed to capitalize on this weakness. Lay the points.

Ai Simulator 3* graded play on Buffalo AiS shows a 73% probability that Buffalo will lose this game by 3 or fewer points and has a 52% probability of winning the game. Buffalo is in a solid position for an ATS win noting they are 9-1 ATS (+7.9 Units) after 1 or more consecutive straight up wins over the last 3 seasons. Akron is not in a strong role to defend their home turf noting they are 0-7 ATS (-7.7 Units) in home games after covering the spread in 4 or 5 out of their last 6 games since 1992. HC Gill is in a series of strong roles as well that reinforce the Ai S grading. Note that Gill is 9-1 ATS (+7.9 Units) after 1 or more consecutive straight up wins; 13-5 ATS (+7.5 Units) as a road underdog. This game has implications as it will break a first place tie in conference play. Buffalo has the edge though as they rank first in the MAC and 9th nationally with a +10 turnover margin. They take exceptional care of the ball on offense having just 9 turnovers ranking 5th nationally. Based on the published reports there is NO doubt that they are strongly focused for this game with a simple goal of consistency in execution on every play. Take Buffalo

UCLA Bruins over Miami of Ohio.

Once again, I don't have a line to work with here as I am writing this free pick early in the morning (6:30am) when no line has been released in this game. But regardless of a line, I like UCLA as Miami of Ohio struggled past Weber State and although UCLA didn't look overly impressive against Prairie View in the minds of bettors as they failed to cover the spread, this is a game that I can easily see UCLA blowing out Miami of Ohio as similar to Duke who failed to cover the first spread against Presbyterian, they came back in game 2 to absolutely pummel Georgia Southern. Why in the world can it not happen here? This will be my freebie today as I like UCLA to get it done over Miami of Ohio. Of course, note, that I do not have a line to roll with yet, but whatever the line is, this is my freebie for the day. I faded Miami of Ohio when they faced Weber State yesterday and I will fade them once again today.

200? New York Jets

Bitter AFC rivals I like the Jets plus the points tonight. I mean throwing out the first meeting between these two team in week one it has been the Jets who have improved the most as New York has won 5 of their last 6 game. Mix the Jets improvement with the fact that the road team has covered the last 6 meetings in the regular season and New York is looking good tonight. Well thanks to the Jets offense lead by Favre who is starting up understand the playbook and a defense that has been stopping the run by holding four teams to under 50 yards this year it is New England with their less then stellar offense and poor secondary who is in trouble tonight. Bottom line, given how well the Jets have improved on both sides of the ball and only getting better I see Mangini getting the best of Belichick and the Patriots. Take the Jets plus the points.

All New York!

100? Virginia Tech Hokies

Also in bonus action I like the Hokies also plus the points tonight. I mean now that Virginia Tech has found a running game with Evans and Taylor healthy the Hokies look to return to their dominate self’s. You see for Virginia Tech they own the highway going 17-5 ATS and also this series winning and covering the last 2 games. Meanwhile, for Miami while playing a lot of freshman this year will benefit the Hurricanes in the years to fallow I look for their inexperience to cost them a win tonight. So keeping their ACC title hopes alive I say take the Hokies plus the points as they win outright on the road.

Jets +3.5 over Patriots
New England has owned the Jets the past couple years, but without Tom Brady this is a different team. Throw in Brett Farve into the picture for the Jets and both teams are totally different then the past few seasons squads. This game will not be about the QB, but will be about the running games. New England's running backs are banged up going against a Jets defense that is great at stopping the run. This game looks like its going to be very tight. Could this game be decided by a field goal? Take the Jets.

College Football
Akron -3.5 over Buffalo
Both teams are evenly matched so you have to wonder why this line is on the move with the betting public taking Buffalo. When a line moves off a field goal you know something is up. The last two years the home team has won the game. I see the same results tonight with an Akron team that is good at creating turnovers. Look for a good game with Akron getting the edge and cover.

Stu's 100 DIME Division Mismatch Game of the Year(SF1)

New York at New England (-3') - 8:15 p.m. EST

This isn’t Spygate, but it is a battle for first place in the division tonight and look for New England to once again take care of its bitter rival with this solid home win and cover. With their Week 2 victory (19-10) at the Flyboys, NE is now 9-1 SU and 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings. Truly Bill Belichick will pull out all the stops against his former defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, who is just 1-5 SU versus New England. I like the way Matt Cassell (decent QB rating of 83.9 this year) has been playing of late after last week throwing for 234 yards and no picks in a convincing win over Buffalo. And now he’s starting to get some help with the running game behind the legs of rookie BenJarvus Green-Ellis. The NE offensive line only allowed one sack a week ago and protecting Cassell and providing running lanes for Green-Ellis tonight will be key against a NY defense that has been for the most part solid, albeit against a weak schedule. The Flyboys come into this one having won four of their last five straight-up after dismantling listless St. Louis last week. But they have lost to Oakland and a closer look shows that in these last five games, their opponents’ record is a mere 11-34 and five of those wins were by Buffalo. Basically, NY has been beating up on patsies, but that changes tonight on the road against a hated rival that will stop at nothing (including illegal video taping) to gain an edge to win. Brett Favre has been ordinary in recent weeks and in fact has thrown twice as many picks (8) as touchdowns (4) in the last five games. In some possible tough weather conditions, he’ll toss multiple picks again this evening. New England is on a spread run of 16-7 versus teams with winning records and the chalk is on a series run of 8-2-1. This is a small price to cover and with the stakes so high, I’m on Belichick at home as New England gets the job done.

Stu's 100 DIME Division Mismatch GOY Total Play (SF2)

New York (42') at New England (-3') - 8:15 p.m. EST

It’s going to be very wet and a bit windy tonight and this will be a defensive struggle as it stays under the posted price. Both of these teams sport several under trends that should stay true to form. New England is on under runs of 4-0-1 overall, 8-1-2 at home, 9-1-2 in conference games and 4-1 in divisional contests. New York is on under runs of 4-1-1 on the road, 8-2-1 in conference games, 6-1-1 versus teams with winning records and 5-1-1 in divisional affairs. In addition, four of the last five meetings at Gillette Stadium have stayed under the posted price. These wet and windy conditions will leave Brett Favre struggling with accuracy, so look for the Flyboys to pound the football with Thomas Jones. But New England, ranked 12th in total defense, is no slouch at stuffing the run. They held Buffalo to just 60 rushing yards (168 total) last week and the NE defense will be revved up for this one at home against the turnover prone Favre. The New York defense has played well, too, and outside of the Monday Night game in San Diego, has stood up on the road in allowing 17, 16, and 14 points on the highway. This will be a smash-mouth type of football game in wet conditions and it will stay under the final price.

Stu's 100 DIME ACC Blowout of the Week (SF3)

Virginia Tech (+4') at Miami-Fla (43) - 7:45 p.m. EST

Look for Virginia Tech to be a very live dog tonight and for the Hokies to win this ACC tilt outright. Both teams are very much alive in the league’s Coastal Division, and in fact, Va Tech can claim a spot in the conference’s title game simply by winning its last three games. But it starts tonight down in South Florida where the Hokies have covered five of their last six. VT has played well against its former Big East rival as the Frank Beamer’s club has won and covered the last two meetings, gone 4-1 SU the last five encounters and is 6-1 ATS in the last seven games versus the Hurricanes. A week ago tonight, VT turned in an impressive performance at home in beating nationally-ranked Maryland by 10 points. They ran for 273 yards and also held the Terps to minus-12 yards on the ground and 229 total. Maryland’s Da’Rel Scott had come into that game as the ACC’s leading rusher but was held to a mere 11 yards on 10 carries by the Hokies. With QB Tyrod Taylor still out with an ankle injury, Sean Glennon looks to pick up where he’s left off (23-of-36 for 260 yards, 1 TD, no picks) the past two games. He’ll certainly be handing off to Darren Evans, who has given this offense some life and ran for 254 yards last week against Maryland. Both teams have capable defenses, but Miami’s poor work in the red zone (opponents have scored 25 times in 26 red zone chances with 21 TDs) is alarming. So is the number of interceptions (10) Miami starting QB Robert Marve has thrown despite sharing duties with Jacory Harris. This is still a very, very young Hurricane team that lost at home to UNC and was very lackluster offensively in home wins over Central Florida and Wake Forest recently. There is no home field advantage for the Canes, who no longer play at the Orange Bowl. Miami, which is on ATS slides of 5-16-1 at home and 7-15-1 in ACC action, is also just 1-11 ATS coming off a bye. The Hokies have won at both UNC and Nebraska this year and had FSU on the ropes in Tallahassee for 2 ½ quarters last time on the highway before both their quarterbacks left the game with injuries. The Hokies are on spread runs of 19-7 on the road, 25-9 in conference play, 10-1 in November and 13-4 on Thursday night. Look for VT return man Dyrell Roberts to do something special tonight as the dog, which has covered five of the last seven in this series, has plenty of bite yet again in this outright Va Tech win.

Virginia Tech (+4) at Miami (FL) (41) - 7:30 p.m. EST

Virginia Tech has the technical edge in this matchup having won and covered the last two games and 4 of the last 5. Beamers boys are 17-5 ATS as a visitor since 2004. However this is a resurgent Canes squad that is at home on a prime time Thursday night stage. Miami needs this win for the program. Tech is not the squad they have been years past relying on speed and special teams. Well I have news for you, Miami can run too and they are athletic. We have all seen VT deliver this year. Last week they beat a ranked Maryland squad but that was in Hokie country. Now they face a team that matches up well against them and is playing for the future of the program. Miami wins this game on heart and will by a touchdown. Sean Glennon will not get it done tonight and the special teams will not factor as they have in other Tech wins. All this nonsense about Miami not having home field advantage anymore because the "O" Bowl is gone. I'm not buying it. The public is all over Tech and I'm with the South Florida boys from the U to deliver a big win for the home crowd.

Miami airs it out for 200+ and hits the century mark on the ground while winning 27-20. Take Miami minus the points tonight.

Wyoming (+7) at UNLV (47) - 9 p.m. EST

Another trend buster game here tonight when Wyoming rolls into Vegas to fave UNLV. The visiting team in this rivalry is 6-2 with the underdog going 4-0 at UNLV. Wyoming comes rolling in off a big upset win last week at Tennessee and is playing on a short week while travelling for the second straight. UNLV has covered the last two in this series Word is we will be seeing Clayton tonight for the Rebels but regardless backup Clausen filled in nicely last week as UNLV ran up 27 in a win against New Mexico.

UNLV needs to get this big sixth win as Sam Boyd's job is rumored to be on the line. The Rebels are just 3-12 in Sam Boyd finales but this year they get it done. Take UNLV in a high scoring affair the Rebels win by double digits 30-19. Take UNLV minus the points tonight.
