Mornington Racecourse will host a nine-race card on Thursday as the solitary Victorian meeting for the day. The track is currently rated a Good 4 but with some rain on the way for Victoria on Tuesday and Wednesday we could potentially be in the Soft range come raceday. The rail will be in the 3m position for racing, with the first race jumping at 1pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Breaking Ground

Our best bet of the day at Mornington will be Breaking Ground for the Chris Waller stable in race two over 1200m. In this three-year-old colt’s debut, he raced right at the back of the field in a Pakenham maiden over 1200m where he got out late and worked home very nicely to finish fifth just over two lengths off the winner and stablemate, Lindermann. Even though this son of Snitzel only managed to run home for fifth, he was just about the run of the race as nothing else made ground in the straight. Brett Prebble has chosen to stick with this young colt, which will be one of his two rides that he has for the whole day, in what would be a rare trip to Mornington on a Thursday for one of Victoria’s premier jockeys. With Brett Prebble making the trip to stick with this guy and considering the strength of the field isn’t that strong, we should be seeing this colt breaking his maiden today.

Next Best Bet: Miss Passion

The Peter Moody-trained Miss Passion will be our next best bet in race three over 1200m. This three-year-old filly has run second at all three of her starts, sitting on pace at all three and just beaten by a combined two lengths in her last two runs this preparation. This daughter of Redoute’s Choice has looked like winning both of her two starts this time in at some stage during the straight, and she should have won last stat but was beaten by General Barca who flew home to nab her late. Luke Nolen will get back aboard this up-and-coming filly and as he does a lot of work for the Moody team, he will know how to get the best out of this girl and hopefully get her into the winners circle for the first time.

Our best value runner is the Shane Nichols-trained Zakurak in race eight over 1000m. This six-year-old gelding resumed from an eight month spell on September 22 on the Pakenham Synthetic over 1000m, but he bumped into Boldhino who absolutely smashed the field that night. Outside of the winner, this son of Iffraaj was by far the best run in the race after he was midfield and held up on straightening but once he got some room to let down, he did so nicely. If Matthew Cartwright can have this guy bounce well from barrier eight, he could be much closer to the leaders if not outside the lead and then prove very hard to run down in the straight.

RACE 4: COMMAND POINT (#3)

If this race stays on turf, Chad Brown holds the keys to it, as he sends out the favorite in the main body of the field, Princess Blakely (#10), as well as Control Function (#13), who would be a stronger favorite if able to draw in off the also-eligible list. The latter filly ran respectably against a much tougher open N1X field last time and will be tough for this group to handle with a repeat of that performance. However, she did get a perfect trip that day, and will be mired in an outside post position even if she does get in here. I still prefer her to Princess Blakely, who just stayed on at one pace in her lone turf start back in July. I question her overall ability, but she does seem good enough to compete at this level. However, I see a viable alternative to the Brown pair. Command Point (#3) was running races last year for George Weaver that would put her on par with Control Function. It appears she’s regressed since returning from a layoff for Rob Atras this year, but I think she’s run better than it appears in both recent outings. She was compromised by a slow pace in her return two back, and last time she got a poor trip through the final three furlongs, as she encountered significant traffic while attempting to launch a rally, and was shuffled back and shut off at multiple points. She’s better than that and can rebound here if some pace develops.

RACE 6: UNCLE GEORGE (#4)

This starter-allowance affair is not just the most competitive race on the card – it’s one of the most wide-open races that I’ve handicapped all year in New York. There’s no clear favorite signed on, and you can make a case for each of the runners in the main body of the field. Ultimately I wanted to shy away from the likely shorter prices like Digital Future (#5), Napa Spirit (#7), and Mister Chairman (#10). They all have the credentials to be competitive here, but you’re supposed to do some price shopping in a race like this. Note that Sheriff Bianco will scratch, which allows King Moonracer (#13) to draw in off the AE list. While the wide post position is not ideal for this Weaver trainee, I like the slight stretch-out in distance for him, since he’s had more success over these longer sprint distances at Belmont and Aqueduct. He was compromised by a poor start and traffic last time in a race dominated up front, and I think he’s capable of better here. Fast N Fearious (#2) has the speed to get in front of this field early, but the switch back to turf does seem a little curious. He showed such marked improvement on dirt last time and was entered back on that surface two weeks ago before scratching. I don’t mind turf for him, but I’m curious to see if he can maintain his form. My top pick is Uncle George (#4). This horse was a bit of a disappointment when racing for the Christophe Clement barn, but he did have to endure his fair share of bad luck, some of which was of his own making. He tends to break slowly, so he needs some paces to develop up front. I thought he closed pretty well last time going a distance that is too short for him. The slight stretch-out figures to help, and there does appear to be plenty of speed in this field. Furthermore, William Morey is 4 for 11 (36%, $3.73 ROI) first off the claim on turf over five years, with 9 of the 11 hitting the board.

RACE 7: BATTLE SCARS (#3)

I’m not particularly interested in either favorite in this New York-bred N1X allowance. Citizen K (#6) has improved on the stretch-out in distance lately, but his form is exposed at this point. He got a good trip last time stalking a moderate pace and just couldn’t fend off the late challenge of the superior Catch That Party. Now he’s picking up Irad Ortiz Jr. and figures to be a much shorter price than he’s been in recent starts. Marinara Sauced (#12) also seems likely to take money for the Brown. This runner got pretty lucky to win his debut in a race that collapsed, and I haven’t been thrilled with any of his subsequent starts. He did make up some ground in a stakes last time, but he saved ground early in the race at a time when you wanted to be inside, and there wasn’t much of quality behind him. I want to go in a different direction with Battle Scars (#3). I thought this 4-year-old ran a winning race when he returned from the layoff last time despite finishing fourth. He was three wide early and forced to rally widest of all on the far turn and through the stretch during a time when the rail was the place to be on the inner turf course. He figures to improve with that effort under his belt, and now he’s drawn a much better post position. He ran pretty well over this course last year, and his return race suggests he may have improved since then. The other horse I want to use is first-time turfer Street Tsar (#1), who appears to be the controlling speed from the rail. Distance is a question mark, but he’s supposed to appreciate turf, being by Street Boss out of a dam who has produced a turf winner. I can forgive his last race where he engaged in a four-way duel before fading, especially since he should be able to shake loose up front this time.

#5 Digital Future runs first off of the claim for Handal today, while moving up in class, which is a good sign he likes the horse. He was a winner last time out at Saratoga. #7 Napa Spirit was a solid second at this level last time out at Kentucky Downs, which is always a difficult challenge.

#6 Citizen K was a head away from victory last time out at this class level at Saratoga. Look for him to give a similar effort and have a similar trip today. #12 Marinara Sauced was within a length of winning a stakes event last time out at Saratoga, which means he should be tough on the class drop today.

#4 Mosienko goes for her fourth straight victory today after winning over this track just two weeks ago. She has turned into a win machine. #3 Bank On Anna will be looking for back to back scores after winning a New York bred stakes event in her last start at Saratoga.

#7 Mr. Connecticut ran well when dropping in class last time out and should improve off of that effort today. His speed figures are a bit better than anyone else in the field. #12 Addicted to You gets back to the turf today, which is where he runs his best races. He will be competitive in this spot.

2nd race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F TURF] – (4) Highway Harmony (A) set the pace in her debut but was rundown by a Hot List horse at Saratoga. (1) Kara Para was fourth in her first start beaten by less than a length for Linda Rice at 6-1 after a wide trip. Rice has big numbers with her second-time runners. (7) Bode’s Girl got bumped twice at the start of her debut race and rallied from behind to get a close third. (12) Showemyourheels was fourth in her initial race at 7-1 for Danny Gargan whose horses are running well at the BAQ meeting. Irad gets on board.

3rd race [Alw 50000s, 6F] – (6) Mommasgottarun was claimed from her last two starts at Saratoga where she was in excellent form. She won a N2L race and was taken for $16,000 by Ron Falcone Jr. (5) Dame Cinco was claimed from consecutive victories for $25,000 and is now in the barn of Amira Chichakly who brings her back in two weeks. (2) I’m Nervous Now won her debut in a NY-bred $40,000 maiden claimer and was taken by Charlie Baker who wins at 32% first off the claim. (1) Sister Supream was second in a starter allowance at the Spa and now gets Irad and will ship up from Delaware once again.

6th race [Alw 50000s, 6F TURF] – (1) After Five (B) broke through the gate and then got off to a slow start, had to rally from last in an 11 horse field, and finished third just a length behind the winner. (5) Digital Future won his first start of the year and was claimed for $35,000 by Ray Handal who finds a favorable pace scenario for his horse’s closing running style. (7) Napa Spirit is one of several horses in the field that has early speed. He has two good starts this year making this, his third since a layoff of more than a year. (11) Sugar Gray Leonard was second in his first try on the turf last time in a similar spot at Saratoga.
