Grispi, Varner, and Assuncao all look extremely good!!
Varner's overall skillset is definitely ahead of Shalorus's. But I honestly do not think that Varner can take Shalorus down, so his ground skills are a moot point. I think this fight will be contested on the feet (unless Shalorus wants to take it to the ground, which he never seems to want to do).
Varner's boxing is definitely more technically superb, but Shalorus has more power.
Interesting matchup. If money comes in on Varner, I will be on Shalorus. As it stands, I'll probably stay away.

I was thinking about Shalorus, but he does not translate his wrestling to mma well at all. I think Varner will beat him.
on a side note, watch this video for a laugh. Shalorus is a db. He is in a grappling match, refuses to engage, and then the other guy starts making fun of him and they start throwing down in an elementary school gym:

What exactly do you mean, doesn't translate well? If you go back and watch Dave Jansen's fights, he never had a big problem taking people down, but he couldn't take Shalorus down for shit. In fact, I don't think Shalorus has been taken down at all, at least in the WEC, and I don't really think Varner's going to be able to do it either.Originally Posted by MMA_scientist
But like I said, Varner will have the more technical striking, which should win him the fight. But I don't really like him at -170, especially after I lost money on him against Bendo.
Dude, that's funny as shit. Was dude's headbutt intentional, do you think? Because that seems to be what set the whole thing off.Originally Posted by MMA_scientist

Clearly it was intentional. That's what started the fight.
Shalorus think he's Chuck Liddell.

Well, since I said, "Because that seems to be what set the whole thing off," I know that's what started the fight. But that doesn't mean it was intentional.Originally Posted by zY|
It looks like he may have been shooting in for a takedown and their heads collided. That shit happens in MMA all the time.

LOL watch it again.Originally Posted by SPX

Also notice Kamal grabs a single after that.

Kamal gets in a grappling match then refuses to grapple... I would have been frustrated too. I lold when the guy tried to give him his back and Kamal wouldn't take it. It was clear that Kamal just wanted ot wait until 20 seconds were left, score a takedown, and get a W without having to grapple at all.
I am fine with trying to win on takedowns, but Kamal wouldn't even try to get a takedown... he was just stuffing teh other guy and not doing anything.
SPX, I said I do not think he translates his wrestling well as far as control. You see it a lot, these guys that come from international wrestling styles are not as good at controlling opponents. Freetstyle and greco are all about the takedowns and back exposure. There is almost no mat wrestling. So when he gets the takedowns, he doesn't do a very good job of holding it. And since I find his striking to be nothing more than wild brawling, he needs to do more than sprawl and brawl.
He is good at takedowns and even better at stuffing them though.

^ and as to the headbutt, it looks like Kamal did it first, and they were both on purpose IMO.

IMO this is a great card for underdogs!
1U on Varner and Karen parlay
1U on Grispi
1U on Yves

I'm thinking Yves and LC myself. I think Grispi is being favored because all his fights are done by finish and 1st round.

I'm wondering if or if not to pull the trigger on Shalorus. Everyone likes him to win this fight it seems.
Varner is going to have problems getting Shalorus down, his striking is better but Shalorus has more power. This is a fairly even fight but I see Shalorus deciding where it takes place which could play a major factor if it goes to decision. Shalorus is just a bad matchup for Varner really.
