    RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 4-Quintecents; 6-Crazy Cavalier.
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: We’re always hesitant to pick a 17-race maiden but in today’s opener it simply couldn’t be avoided. Quintecents may finally have found a field he can outrun in this modest maiden $50,000 extended turf sprint, though he’s clearly not one to trust. Winless in 10 previous tries over the local lawn, the son of Goldencents at least has hit the board in six of those races and he appears to be quick enough to be on or near the lead throughout. The most dangerous of the newcomers may be Crazy Cavalier, who has done some okay work at San Luis Rey Downs for trainer R. Baltas. He breezed a moderate 10 3/5 seconds at the OBS June sale last summer, but he showed himself to be a good mover with a nice stride, so maybe he can be competitive against this group.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 2: Post: 1:33 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 3-Vulin; 2-Dramatizer
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Vulin and Dramatizer finished one-two in a $10,000 claimer last month over this track and distance in a stronger than par event for the class and meet again on the one-level raise for new connections. The former, now in V. Cerin’s barn, switches to T. Baze, who has won on her in the past and projects to have her draft into an ideal second flight, stalking position and have every chance to score right back. The latter, haltered by the low profile G. Lopez stable, may be dangerous from off the pace if the early fractions help her out. We’re expecting the winner will be one or the other.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 3: Post: 2:07 PT Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 7-Beer Money; 4-Special Club.
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Beer Money has finished In the frame in three of four starts over the local lawn and based on speed figures looks like a reasonable gamble in this competitive grass dash. The D. O’Neill-trained colt projects to inherit an ideal stalking trip from his outside draw and have every chance from there. Special Club, clearly most effective as a late-running sprinter, graduated for fun over this course and distance two weeks ago, and if he doesn’t react negatively off the quick turnaround (and we don’t think he will) the son of Clubhouse Ride will be tough right back despite the class hike.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 4: Post: 2:39 PT Grade: X
    Main Ticket: 6-Donita Rose
    Backups/savers: 4-Flamina.

Forecast: Donita Rose stretches out for the first time, and if she’s ever going to stay a mile it most likely will be in her first try. The daughter of Stay Thirsty certainly has the pedigree to handle two turns and seems likely to inherit the role as the controlling speed without really being asked. She missed as the favorite without any real excuse in her most recent outing, but she retains top rider J. Hernandez, and given the projected pace flow she most likely be the heavy chalk once again.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 5: Post: 3:10 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 6-Smart Kitten; 5-Highlands.
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Smart Kitten simply ran out of ground when missing by a head while five lengths clear of the rest in her first start in 10 months four weeks ago and was claimed by S. Knapp (a solid 18% with this angle). The new barn stretches her out to her preferred distance and based on numbers and her usual running style the daughter of Kitten’s Joy should be on or near the lead throughout. Highlands earned a solid speed figure for this group when a good runner-up in an allowance grass race at Turf Paradise last month. If she repeats that performance today she’ll be right there. These are the two we’ll be using in rolling exotic play with slight preference on top to ‘Kitten.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 6: Post: 3:42 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 1-Potential Spam; 8-Syntactic
    Backups/savers: 6-Hardmoneymuchachos; 2-Fireman Dan.

Forecast: Potential Spam got a confidence building win for maiden $20,000 last month while equaling his career top speed figure and had the form franked when the runner-up came back to graduate in sharp style next time out. From the rail, the son of Palace Malice should inherit a mid-pack, ground saving trip, and if he produces even a slight forward move he could repeat on the raise at a decent price. Syntactic is a first time gelding and may improve after finishing a close third in a similar restricted (nw-2) $16,000 claimer last month. He’s a one-paced grinder and will need to drop over and save some ground from his outside post, but it may be significant that T. Baze jumps off our top pick to stick with the M. Glatt-trained gelding.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 7: Post: 4:14 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: Pink Whitney; 7-Marinas Tina (Ire).
    Backups/savers: 4-Weemissgrammy.

Forecast: Pink Whitney exits a series of stronger races, most recently when fourth in a recent hot allowance main track event behind the highly promising Jane Austen. With this condition-friendly starter’s allowance race appearing in the book, trainer D. O’Neill has opted to bring her back on short rest of seven days. Back over a turf course that she’s won on in the past, the daughter of Liam’s Map should draft into a comfortable second flight trip and then kick home when given her cue. Marinas Tina (Ire) missed by a neck when favored against this group last month in a race that produced a career top speed figure. It’ll be interesting to see how much if any effect the addition of blinkers for the first time will have on her form.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 8: Post: 4:46 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: 1-Principe Carlo; 6-Katar; 3-Joe Don Looney.
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Principe Carlo shows up in a mid-level claimer and the class drop is warranted following a long series of ambitiously placed outings in which the veteran gelding was simply in too tough. He’s back in 12 days, but if the son of Coil handles the quick turnaround he may be good enough to beat this field. Katar is a razor sharp Phoenix invader with rapidly improving speed figures, but this is a much saltier band of sprinters than he’s been beating of late. Today we’ll find out if he belongs on this circuit. Joe Don Looney has been away for 13 months, and the work tab looks a bit light, so we’re wondering if this tough, veteran gelding might need the outing. On the positive side, he’s been first or second in five of eight starts over the local main track, is fast enough on figures to pose a threat, and his trainer has off-the-charts stats with comebackers.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 9: Post: 5:14 PT Grade: B
    Main ticket: 7-Legitify (Ire) ; 2-Uncle Reg; 8-Quality Wins.
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Let’s go for a price in the nightcap, an extended turf sprint for maiden $50,000 older horses that offers several possibilities. Legitify (Ire) at one time was fairly well regarded but after two starts finds himself in a seller and could very well have found his comfort zone. The son of Justify has so far displayed good early speed before fading when facing some quick straight maidens, but against this group the R. Mandella-trained sophomore might be able to stick around for a long time. He’s listed at 8-1 on the morning line and is worth at gamble at or near that price. Uncle Reg is a one-paced grinder that lacks a winning punch, but for new trainer R. Baltas following a claim at this level the son of Lea really won’t have to improve much to earn his diploma. He should be doing his best work late. Quality Wins is dropping into a seller for the first time in his first start in 11 months. The good news is the barn sports terrific stats with the layoff angle, in addition to having run well on the course in the past and landing one of the barn’s “go-to riders (K. Frey). The main concern is that he’s looked just ordinary in his comeback drills. Out of respect for the connections, we’ll toss him in.

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 24, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card with the feature coming in Race 10 an Open 1/2 Pace with a $22,000 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (9:45 PM EST)

6-Round Here Buzz (7/2)-Comes off a no try mile in last when dropped to this level. Left from the 8-hole and now gets needed post relief. Mike Oosting can land on the point, and not look back. Could be sitting on a big try, and there isn't much gate speed inside.
7-Ultra Image (5/2)-Barely cashed a check last time and needed a 53.3 last half to finish 5th. Beaten odds-on chalk can make amends. Trace Tetrick has the speed to beat this crew but needs to work the right trip to be in striking range turning for the wire.

    Race 12 (10:06 PM EST)

2-Away We Go A (3-1)-Has been dull since coming off the bench, missed starts and has burned money. Beaten odds on chalk is due to wake up and might not be over bet tonight. Comes back in sequence and will respect chances.
3-Mustang Beach (5-1)-The 0-13 record this year is cause for pause but comes off a spirited effort. This is the 2nd try at this level and kept coming despite a rough trip. Will look for this upswing to continue at a square price.

    Race 13 (10:27 PM EST)

3-Bundoran N (9/5)-Is only 2-20 the past 2 years, that said this is a significant drop-in class. Has no excuse for not taking care of this crew. Needs a clean trip and Trace Tetrick should provide one.

    Race 14 (10:48 PM EST)

3-Quixote (6-1)-Has been a bridesmaid in the last 2 starts and now bumps up. Usually not a choice play but versus this group could be up to the challenge. Kept coming after being rimmed the mile and should provide a square price.
6-Spring Inhis Step A (5/2)-Has been hanging around versus Open company and has cashed checks. Now drops to a spot to shine and should be a major player.
7-ER Rocky (6-1)-Won, then bumped up to this level and came with a big try with a different game plan. Left, got on the point, and faded late in the mile but it was a strong try. Doesn't usually show good gate speed, and the last line makes this an interesting play at a nice price.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    6,7/2,3/3/3,6,7
    Total Bet=$12

Pimlico Late Pick 3 Friday, May 24

    May 24, 2024 | By Frank Carulli
    PIMLICO LATE PICK 3
    Friday, May 24, 2024

Late runners fared well on soft footing on Pimlico’s turf course Preakness weekend. But the forecast is for sunny skies, temperatures in the upper 80s and firm footing this Friday, May 24. A full field of 12 is scheduled to go to the post in a 1-1/16-mile starter allowance and $20,000/nw3 claiming race at 5F – both on the turf and both part of a 50-cent Late Pick 3 that shapes up this way:
PIM 6th race (3:10 p.m. EST) -- WORKIN ON A DREAM ‘eagerly’ pulled away from a pair of follow-up, front-end winners at one mile. He led a long way and finished second at Pimlico the last time he ran on the lawn a year ago. He could take some catching on the class rise for his new barn. THE LAST SCIP rallied but flattened out in a fast-paced grass mile when last seen in November, settling for third behind Colbaloaf and King’s Honor, who are a combined 12-36 on turf with $290,000 in earnings. Earlier in the year, he won off a four-month layoff and re-claim by this barn, then repeated in a triple key grass mile. (If #14 Bailout draws into the race, add him to the Pick 3 ticket.)

PIM 7th race (3:43 p.m. EST) -- UNCAPTURED STORM is a $255k earner on a fast track, 6-11 at today’s distance and a five-time photo finish victor in his last nine starts. SHIVAREE, who four years ago ran second to Tiz The Law in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, appears rounding to a good race off the re-claim as he seeks his first victory since a Florida-bred stakes in 2021. BRILLIANT CHASE, plagued by poor starts in his last two races at Park, tries to recapture his top form since the re-claim by Ness. His :47-1/5 bullet workout a week ago is an encouraging sign. GOLDEN GULLY won his last three starts at this distance and will try to improve trainer Gary Capuano’s 5-for-11 record over the last three years with class-dropping route runners off 180-plus day layoffs.

PIM 8th race (4:16 p.m. EST) -- SWITZER is the one to beat off his prior two turf sprints and a return to his level of claim. He won a $40,000 claimer at Laurel Park in August, though his four closest pursuers are a combined 17/1-1-2 since then. He broke last and rallied widest when third in a blanket finish two starts ago in allowance company. FLASH IS BACK is a live longshot to use on the Pick 3 ticket. He ran his best race off a layoff, finishing second to next-out allowance runner-up Tall Order and, two starts later, ‘closed well’ to spring an 18-1 upset on the Laurel Park lawn. He diverted from off-the-pace tactics last out and tired in the stretch after battling for the lead. KBCYA later out-dueled FLASH IS BACK and got beat a half-length the last time he ran on turf. He showed speed but faded in a comeback turf-to-dirt sprint. BARONS LEGACY has front-end wins on fast and sloppy tracks and led a long way in the mud last out, sprinting clear in mid-stretch before the troubled favorite passed by. He tries turf for the first time off the claim. PARK PLACE escaped traffic and rallied to a mid-stretch lead in his lone turf attempt, finishing second to a 12-1 first-time starter. He’s another price play to use off a comeback win for his new barn.

    Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
PIM 6th Race: 7, 11 (#14 if he draws into race)
    PIM 7th Race: 2, 3, 4, 7
    PIM 8th Race: 3, 4, 6, 8, 11
    Cost for 50-cent ticket: $20

    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Santa Anita - Race #1
    Picks Notes
#6 Crazy Cavalier Get a look at him on the track and tote ahead of this, but the one to beat in here has had a ton of chances already, and this fresh face might be ready for the trip.
#4 Quintecents I've probably given him the edge a half dozen times throughout his career, and he looks like the main player on paper again today. He's capable and super reliable, but he's given away ground in the stretch call in every race on his page, so I think you're allowed to go looking for someone to punch home better.
#2 Gaelic Nation I wouldn't be that excited to sign on for a much shorter price this time around after an effort that was competitive but also a touch flat late, and he's another I don't really trust that much late.
Race Summary This looks like a spot that a newcomer might take, so I'm inclined to lean to Crazy Cavalier, who may be a better number than the other debuter drawn just outside him.
    Santa Anita - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#1 Principe Carlo I could see him finding a pretty decent spot tucked inside behind some quicker forward players while still getting the jump on finishing threats. Price might be OK.
#3 Joe Don Looney He has done some good work in those last two when showing sharper pace, but I wonder if the guy listed next is going to force him to hustle to try to establish that position again today.
#6 Katar No idea what you're supposed to make of him here while trying this open first-level allowance after drilling Arizona-bred stakes players by 20 combined lengths over the last two starts. Better stuff fits on paper, but I don't feel enthusiastic if the price is something like the 3/1 ML offering.
Race Summary Principe Carlo might get a good run while a couple quicker players sort things out early, and he's probably going to get a little lost on the tote.
    Santa Anita - Race #9
    Picks Notes
#7 Legitify He has only shown a little bit of pace into the lane in a pair of starts so far, but I think the move back to the lawn should work in his favor, and he might be able to stick around better while trying this softer group.
#2 Uncle Reg He's probably supposed to win this while racing off the claim after running a good one with similar last time out, but I think this race gives you a few different options to look at. Gotta use him if this is a leg you need to land.
#8 Quality Wins He is a good fit on overall form -- tactical route pace cutting back off the bench while racing for a tag for the first time -- but I worry just a little bit about that last part, especially for a guy who raced once in 2021, three times in five months last year, and now today. Price probably isn't enough to interest me with some questions to answer.
Race Summary Legitify may still be capable of something better while getting back on the turf and finding an easier spot today. Takes a run for it and proves best of the speed?

    Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

    Pimlico - Race #2
    Picks Notes
#4 SASSE’S CLASS (8-1) Drops, shortens up, has ingredients to pull off upset in first start as a 3yo.
#3 CORRECTED PEDIGREE (8-1) Took mid-stretch aim on lead in double key turf sprint, starts fresh.
#2 HAPPY JAUNT (2-1) Showed speed in MSW debut at 1M, returns as gelding for strong layoff barn.
Race Summary SASSE’S CLASS gets class relief and Lasix for his seasonal debut off a bullet workout. He ran in two MSW grass routes in the fall, setting the pace for 6F at 1-1/16 miles, then chasing a rapid pace at 1-1/8 miles before the deep closers grabbed most of the money spots both times. Bet to win and place and play a 2-3-4 exacta box.
    Pimlico - Race #5
    Picks Notes
#4 ONE WAY FARRIOR (9-5) Proven at this level, projects dream trip on top of it.
#6 DANCE FOR GREEN (4-1) Can stalk and pounce for repeat victory on the class hike.
#1 BURNINGUPTHEDOUGH (3-1) Speed will be tested from rail, Cruz sticks.
Race Summary ONE WAY FARRIOR rallied 5-wide on a sloppy track to finish second on the drop to his level of claim. He gets plenty of pace to run at and is a deserving favorite. Bet to win and place and play 4-1 and 4-6 exactas.
    Pimlico - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#3 FLASH IS BACK (20-1) Come-from-behind tactics put him in mix for upset victory.
#8 SWITZER (9-5) Turf win for $40k was at expense of weak field, deserving fave nonetheless.
#6 PARK PLACE (10-1) Troubled second in lone turf try, arrives off front-end main-track win for new barn.
Race Summary FLASH IS BACK raced against his best running style last out but should revert to off-the-pace tactics for a possible upset rally like he produced two starts back. He ran his best race off a layoff last fall, finishing second to next-out allowance runner-up Tall Order. Bet to win and place and play a 3-6-8 exacta box.

    Evangeline Downs - Race #5 - Post: 7:18pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 72

    Rating:

    #2 HUMOR ME PLEASE (ML=7/2)
    #3 LITTLE ROCKY (ML=5/2)
#6 TALK OF THE TOWN (ML=15/1)

HUMOR ME PLEASE - Was in a $5,000 Claiming race at Evangeline Downs last out. That affair had a class rating of 82 and he is moving down right here. A certain strong challenger. Look for this gelding to show better right here. Last event at Evangeline Downs finishing fifth on a sloppy track is no indication of his true ability. LITTLE ROCKY - Dropping in class rating points from his May 11th race at Evangeline Downs. Based on that information, I will give this animal the edge. You have to really like that recent race fig, 66, which is the highest most recent race speed rating of this group. Ranks number one in the field in earnings per race. A powerful outing right here can increase the lifetime total. TALK OF THE TOWN - Thornton and Ducoing partnered with one another are a handicapper's friend. This gelding is in first-rate condition right now. Ran first last time around the track and comes back rapidly.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #7 Z'S GUITAR (ML=9/2), #4 BIG FIG (ML=5/1), #10 MECKES PRIORITY (ML=8/1),

Z'S GUITAR - No pace in this race to help this closer's hopes. BIG FIG - Recent dropping Equibase speed figures of 77/62/54 give a clue that this equine may be going off form. Just can't wager on this racer. Didn't show me anything last time out or on April 5th. MECKES PRIORITY - 8/1 is not enough of a value to take on most any entrant that has run poorly in back to back races. The rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this entrant as a possibly overvalued equine.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 HUMOR ME PLEASE to win if we can get at least 7/2 odds

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 4 PORTOFINO 9/5
    # 7 ABRIR CAMINOS (CHI) 5/1
    # 6 THREE ZERO 6/1

I think PORTOFINO is a very good choice. He looks decent in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. Could beat this group of horses in this race given the 97 Equibase Speed Figure posted in his last outing. Has run admirably when racing a turf sprint race. ABRIR CAMINOS (CHI) - Strong shot today on Lasix. Has been close up at the finishing post most every time recently. THREE ZERO - Like the results in the last couple of events.

    Woodbine - Race #3 - Post: 2:18pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $36,100 Class Rating: 71

    Rating:

    #5 CADFAEL (ML=2/1)

CADFAEL - This horse coming off a strong try in the last thirty days is a win candidate in my humble opinion. This horse's last race was out at Woodbine in a race with an Equibase class figure of 77. Dropping considerably in class rating this time out puts him in a solid position in this race. Munger is right back for another race today after racing atop this horse for the first ride on May 10th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This gelding is tops in earnings per race. Give the once over to this thoroughbred before the race. This gelding's last rating is high enough to win here, I'll play him back again in today's event.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 SCAT FACTOR (ML=3/1), #6 BEER MOSA (ML=7/2), #4 TODAY (ML=6/1),

SCAT FACTOR - Unlikely for this entrant to do much running with no success lately in a sprint clash. The fifth place finish last out coming after the extended time off is unquestionably not a positive signal. BEER MOSA - Didn't close at all on Dec 2nd. Hard to wager on in today's event at the expected odds. When checking today's class rating, he will have to register a much better fig than in the last race to compete in this dirt sprint. TODAY - This gelding hasn't had any positive efforts in sprint contests in the last couple of months. More than enough attempts at Woodbine with no trips to the victory podium.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 CADFAEL on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more
    EXACTA WAGERS: Pass

    Race 6 - Trial - 330y on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 78

QUARTER HORSE 330Y, FOR TWO YEAR OLDS WHICH WERE NOMINATED AND REMAIN ELIGIBLE. WEIGHT: 124 LBS.

    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 7 SHEZ FLYN 6/1
    # 1 MACHIAVELLI 5/2
    # 6 CAPTAIN SLEEPY 10/1

SHEZ FLYN is the top wager in this race. Has to be given consideration versus this field displaying formidable figs recently and an average Equibase Speed Fig of 73 under similar conditions. Hernandez will probably be able to get this filly to break out quickly in this race. Ought to be carefully examined in this race if only for the quite good speed rating posted in the last outing. MACHIAVELLI - Might best this group of horses in this race here, showing very good numbers of late. The Equibase Speed Figure of 67 from his latest affair looks respectable in here. CAPTAIN SLEEPY - His 64 average has this gelding with among the strongest Equibase speed figs in this race. The average Equibase class rating of 64 makes this one hard to beat.
