Yeah, "judgement free zone", unless you're actually serious about fitness, then get the fuck out you dumb neanderthal piece of shit. I don't understand how people don't see the blatant hypocrisy in those awful commercials.

      Ha ha, yeah. It's retarded.

I go to 24 Hour Fitness (which I have always been happy with) but a friend of mine wants to start working out and there's a Planet Fitness like 3 blocks away so I'm going to go with her to check it out. If it's too gay then I'm going to try to get her to go to Gold's instead. It's a bit of a drive, so a lot less convenient, but it will obviously be a better gym and supposedly they also have some kind of $10 a month rate.

I had never actually seen any of their commercials so I looked them up. They're hilarious and, yes, completely hypocritical.

              Lulz. I saw that earlier.

I have been reading about Planet Fitness most of the night and honestly I just can't believe that there is a gym that has the kinds of rules and policies that they do.

we have a planet fitness here. Hand to God, I never knew it was a gym. I looked in the windows and saw a bunch of tables and stuff, and I thought it was a smoothie bar of some kind, or maybe one of those places where people go to pay for a customized diet plan. Those commercials make me ashamed to be part of the human race. "Come work out at Planet Fitness, guaranteed to not get you in shape... if you do accidentally get in shape, we will throw you out." I also never knew "do you even lift bro" meme guy was a real person.

What's funny is that, if one thing I read was true, you're pretty much right on. One guy said that he had been working on putting on mass and that, after being a member for a while, he was approached by a member of management and was told that if he got much bigger he wouldn't be welcome at that location anymore.

Apparently they also have a rule against deadlifting. Yes, no deadlifts.
And several locations a few years back pulled all of their flat benches and squat racks. All that was left was a few Smith machines.
And they pulled all dumbbells over 60 lbs.

This was, of course, to discourage any "lunks" who might be interested in working out there.

So speaking of Planet Fitness. . .

I went and checked it out today. I do need to give credit where credit is due. It wasn't as bad as I feared. They had a couple of flat benches, which apparently some locations don't have. (But no squat rack . . . just Smith machines.) And there were a fair number of dudes in there who looked to be in pretty good shape. I also asked the sales guy specifically about the "no grunting" policy and he said not to worry about it . . . as long as you're not being obnoxious no one's going to care. So they seemed to be fairly lenient when it came to their policies.

But on the downside it felt small and dark and cramped, none of which was helped by the purple and black color scheme. It just sort of felt claustrophobic and depressing in a way. So I took my friend to the 24 Hour that I go to and she liked it a lot better and went ahead and signed up.

I don't know; I can understand both those Planet Fitness ads and the Iron Sport parody of them. It makes sense that gyms would try to market to different segments of the gym-going population. Throwing people out for grunting is crazy over-the-top, though. I lol'd at the Daily Show segment where the alarm went off.

It makes sense, but their marketing and policies specifically would make a lot more sense if gyms like Iron Sport were normal when they're not. I don't feel like Planet Fitness is catering to any niche of the population that's not already being serviced by 24 Hour Fitness, Lifetime Fitness, Gold's Gym, etc. (I know Gold's was hardcore in the 70s but those days are long gone.) It's not like any of those chains' are filled with huge bodybuilders and powerlifters walking around intimidatingly and throwing weights around indescriminately.

Is it? It kind of looks just like a big dumb action movie. I guess I should see it.
