    Bellator making new rules

Bellator MMA has once again altered the rules behind the “Toughest Tournament in Sports.”

The promotion issued a release on Thursday stating that any fighter who has previously won a Bellator tournament will maintain permanent eligibility to fight for a title without having to enter another bracket down the road.

“Just like we’ve done since day one, any fighter who wins ‘The Toughest Tournament in Sports’ will still be guaranteed a world title fight,” Rebney said in a release. “The addition I’m making here, that I’m really excited about, is if you’ve won a tournament, you’ll join an elite group of athletes who we can grant a world title fight to at any time.

“For example, if you win a tournament, fight for the world title and lose, you forever remain in that elite group of fighters who can be awarded another shot at the title,” he continued. “We will place some fighters back into tournaments, while others may lose a world title fight, win some non-tournament fights and be awarded another shot at the title. We won’t be implementing any hard and fast rule as to when a fighter will go back into a tournament and when he’ll fight non-tournament fights and potentially be granted another title shot.”

According to the release, a total of 34 fighters – current champions included – under Bellator contract are currently eligible to receive a title shot at any time. Some notable non-champions from that list include Michael Chandler, Quinton Jackson, Muhammed Lawal, Daniel Straus and Cheick Kongo, to name a few.

The new rule could potentially give the promotion more matchmaking freedom while also keeping the fighters on its roster active on a more consistent basis.

“What’s great about this addition is that it allows us to stay true to our core format, where title shots can only be earned through a tournament win, while also providing us tremendous flexibility to make the great fights fans want to see,” Rebney said. “And, we can do all this while keeping our fighters busy and battling in meaningful fights on a re-occurring basis. This is another step in our constant evolution and most importantly it’s a win for the fighters and the fans.”

This marks the second time that Bellator has tweaked its tournament format. At the beginning of 2013, Rebney announced that championship rematches would be allowed when necessary, a revision which ultimately paved the way for Michael Chandler-Eddie Alvarez II this past November.

That's silly. You can't have a group of 50 guys eligible for a title shot

34 = 50? You really like playing fast and loose with numbers, eh Luke, lol? That's divided up between seven weight classes of course, so they might have a few tournament winners in each weight class that are potentially available for a title shot. It's really not much any different than any other promotion where you have several contenders in the top ten in each weight class who are on win streaks that are vying to get chosen for title shots in the absence of a tournament system.

You're fucking stupid More tournaments happen every year. Eventually there will be 50..or even 100 people eligible for a title shot . And its not like the UFC you twit.
you forever remain in that elite group of fighters who can be awarded another shot at the title

Forever...........that means always. That means if you lose 5 in a row you're still eligiblefor a title shot. Its not top 10 fighters.

You're like my 8 year old nephew. If I say its about 10:30 he'll speak up and say "its 10:25." WHO THE FUCK CARES If I said 50 people? Everyone knows the article said 34. Stop being a douche

Some fighters will leave Bellator or retire while others will win new tournaments so there won't be an ever increasing number of tournament winners still in the organization who are eligible for title shots. And of course eligible doesn't mean guaranteed a title shot. Not unlike in a strict match making system, new title challengers will either be the winner of the latest tournament or previous tournament winners who are on a win streak, or owed a rematch or who are very marketable.

As far as your nephew, he sounds like a smart kid by correcting you. You should be proud of him.

Most of those guys will never fight for the title. It just gives them a justification to pick whomever they want.

You don't post your own bets if any, so your opinion doesn't count for much. Luckily with live betting on this UFC PPV, I managed to come away with only a relatively small 1.7 unit loss after my documented win of 5.20 units last week. And I entertained myself watching and talking bets with my friends, which is more than I can say for the moderator of an MMA forum like yourself who clearly doesn't even enjoy it anymore.

Yeah yeah yeah. You always have a bunch of bets you post where you lose your ass and magically have live bets that saved you........none of which are documented.

You obviously have no clue what you're doing because the bets you post always lose, but your made up bets--that no one see--always do great

My opinion sure as hell counts a lot more than someone that risked 1000+ last night and lost 500+. I guarantee I won more than you lost last night....of your posted bets, not the made up ones

A guy who doesn't post bets at all actually has the audacity to question the authenticity of my bets when I regularly post every single one of my pre-fight bets on multiple forums well in advance of the start of the card, lol? Do you realize what a joke that makes you sound like? Your bets are complete fiction. Even many of my live bets which obviously occur after the card starts can be verified by my posts in other forums specifically mentioning them in real time as they were made. You felt compelled to cut and paste my list of pre-fight bets here but you didn't cut and paste the time stamped posts where I mentioned making additional bets as the fights progressed. You clearly don't even understand the benefit of live betting on a card like this. You also didn't cut and paste my list of bets from last week that won quite a lot of money compared to the risk.

I guess I just hurt your little feelings when I pointed out that the UFC doesn't have ten heavyweights on their roster and you just never got over it. Or that Bellator doesn't have 50 fighters available for title shots but 34! You complete lack of rigorousness for numbers and your complete lack of documented bets means that nothing that you say is to be believed.

How many inches are in a foot Luke? 16? Close enough!
How many U.S. states are there, Luke? 52? Sure, why not!
How much money did you win last night, Luke? I'm making it up as I go along!
