Lewis (11-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will meet Matt Mitrione (7-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) in a heavyweight tussle when the UFC returns to Connecticut for UFC Fight Night 50 in early September. UFC officials announced the new booking on Wednesday night, just three days after Lewis called Mitrione out.


UFC Fight Night 50 takes place Sept. 5 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Conn. It’s a rare Friday night show for the UFC – and falls on the same night as Bellator 123 in nearby Uncasville, less than 10 miles away. The bulk of the UFC Fight Night 50 card is expected to air on FOX Sports 1 following a few prelims on UFC Fight Pass.


Lewis ripped through Guto Inocente on Sunday at the TUF 19 Finale, scoring a first-round TKO for his second UFC win. In April, he made his promotional debut by dispensing of Jack May in a similar fashion at UFC on FOX 11 in Orlando. After his win over Inocente, Lewis called out Mitrione, who was sitting cageside in Las Vegas.


Mitrione was supposed to fight the night before Lewis at UFC 175, also in Las Vegas. But shortly before he was to meet Stefan Struve, Struve suffered a near-fainting episode backstage and their fight was scrapped. The “TUF 10″ veteran was looking to extend on his “Performance of the Night” knockout of Shawn Jordan, which came in March and got him back on track again after a stretch of three losses in four fights.

Alistair Overeem vs. Ben Rothwell
Derrick Lewis vs. Matt Mitrione

Better card than a lot of the PPVs this year, but isn't it sad that this:

now gets us excited? A few years ago I wouln't have even wasted my time watching a card like this, now its a good card. Sheesh

I don't think it is a good card. There is 1 good fight, a squash match, some B level HW's, a solid undercard fight, and 2 guys I have never heard of. At least it is free.

Rothwell has a chance due to the fact that Overeem is so chinny. Its Reem's fight to lose of course.

I don't think Rothwell can connect on Reem. I'll be betting Reem pretty big -3.5. May as well parlay that with big black guy/big dumb retard ends ITD.

Also, Jacare under -150 I am betting to win $1k if it is a 5 rounder. Probably.

Really taking the under in that one? They will have a tough time subbing each other and Gegard is very tough to knock out. Gegard by tko is much more likely than any of the other outcomes.

Oh you mean your betting Jacare @ -150 or better. Okay, I still think that's a potentially bad idea. Mousasi did well against Machida and that was after a long layoff and knee surgery. He's better than Souza standing and his takedown defense may be good enough.

I have zero doubt Souza could win a 5 rd striking battle against Mousasi
