Cain out - Hunt in - for Interim Title

Hunt cant hold a title...Can he?

Cain Velasquez’s time on the shelf has been extended.

The UFC heavyweight champion has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 180 headlining bout against Fabricio Werdum due to injury. As a result, Werdum will now lock horns with Mark Hunt for the interim title on Nov. 15 in Mexico City. The promotion announced the change on Tuesday. The withdrawal is especially damaging considering that Velasquez, who is of Mexican American descent, was one of the key figures expected to lead the UFC’s push into Mexico.

The 40-year-old Hunt last appeared at UFC Fight Night in Japan, where he garnered a second-round knockout of Roy Nelson. “The Super Samoan” is 5-2-1 in the Octagon overall, with other notable victories against Ben Rothwell, Cheick Kongo and Stefan Struve.

Werdum, meanwhile, enters the bout on a four-fight winning streak. The Brazilian known as “Vai Cavalo” most recently appeared at UFC on Fox 11, where he displayed improved striking skills en route to a five-round verdict against Travis Browne. Werdum owns wins over the likes of Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio Silva and Nelson, to name a few.

Velasquez has not competed since October 2013, when he stopped Junior dos Santos via TKO in the fifth round at UFC 166.

Diego/Lauzon off this card not too

Things keep going downhill for UFC 180.

Just two days after Cain Velasquez pulled out of his heavyweight title defense against Fabricio Werdum due to a knee injury, the promotion has been forced to completely scrap the proposed lightweight matchup between Diego Sanchez and Joe Lauzon. The UFC announced the news on Thursday evening; as a result, a welterweight tussle pitting Edgar Garcia against Hector Urbina has been elevated to the pay-per-view bill.

UFC 180 takes place at the Mexico City Arena in Mexico City and is now headlined by an interim heavyweight title clash between Werdum and Mark Hunt.

Lauzon was originally tabbed as a replacement for the injured Norman Parke, but the Bridgewater, Mass., native withdrew from the contest earlier this week. According to the fighter's camp, Sanchez suffered a torn LCL in his knee, leaving the Las Vegas-based promotion with no other options.

As it stands, injuries have left the UFC 180 main card with just two of its five originally announced pay-per-view bouts intact: Jake Ellenberger vs. Kelvin Gastelum and Ricardo Lamas vs. Dennis Bermudez. In addition to the alteration of the heavyweight main event and the loss of Sanchez-Lauzon, a featherweight tilt between Erik Perez and Marcus Brimage was removed after Perez went down with a shoulder injury earlier this month.
