The co-main event for Saturday’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor PPV undercard was supposed to feature Mayweather protege Gervonta Davis (18-0, 17 KOs) defending his IBF junior lightweight title against the little-known Francisco Fonseca (19-0-1, 13 KOs). For the time being, Davis vs. Fonseca will still happen, but only Fonseca can win the championship belt.
Neither Davis nor Fonseca weighed in with the rest of the undercard fighters, and now we know why. Fonseca came in at the limit of 130 pounds, but Davis was 132 pounds, and he will not re-weigh. The 22-year-old has been stripped of his title, so if he beats Fonseca, the belt will remain unclaimed, but if Fonseca pulls off the upset, then he becomes the champion.
This is a major issue for Davis, who needed three attempts to make weight for his first title defense against Liam Walsh back in May. He’s been stripped outright this time around
Davis was -7000 yesterday ... now -5000Comment
