I actually understand what he's saying here. Who the fuck can really say they're the best in the WHOLE fucking world at something without know what's out there existing in some dark corner of the earth. I mean, you're saying you're the best out of almost 7 BILLION people.

Or even if you just want to say the best fighter between 206 and 265 lbs, that's still a crazy ass thing to say.

So you disagree that it's a little silly to get up and say you're the baddest motherfucker on the entire planet?

No. I know the Shaolin Monks with their 5 finger death punch are better fighters, but I prefer tangible factors.

That's a good adage, but eventually it becomes false. It literally can't go to infinity. And besides, where are these guys?

That's true. It has to stop somewhere. But I think every good fighter in the world signs up to fight professionally. I mean, it's like how not every MMA fan signs up at Sherdog.

So are you saying there are guys that train as long and hard as top MMA fighters and spar actively in multiple disciplines, yet nobody knows who they are?

I'm saying that out of 7 billion people there are undoubtedly plenty of them who can do some pretty unbelievable things.

They don't exist. In the very early days of MMA, there were surely some better fighters out there. But this point, so much specialized and intense training is required that only people who train specifically for competitive MMA would have any kind of a chance at all.

It would be like finding the best football quarterback somewhere completely unknown to the world of modern pro football. Not possible.

I think there's a difference, though, because not everyone who devotes themselves to some form of fighting necessarily competes in MMA. We think of MMA as the end all, be all of unarmed combat but there's other shit out there.

If these people existed, they would have shown themselves long ago to prove their art was superior to MMA. What do you think UFC 1 was all about anyways?

Maybe it's not some art that we've never heard of, but it's just that they're not particularly interested in proving anything beyond what it is that they already do. I mean, it's almost arrogant to think that everyone will come to MMA to prove themselves. Maybe not everyone who fights thinks it's the ultimate proving ground for whatever reason.

                              Consider this scenario:

Maybe there's some 155-pound dude out there who's better at Shotokan than Machida and better at Judo than Akiyama and wouldn't have a problem putting those skills together into a package that would enable him to beat Frankie Edgar. But he's not interested in that. He's just interested in being a world champion at Shotokan and Judo, individually.

Am I saying that there's a guy out there just like that? No. But it's not at all inconceivable. So I am just illustrating how their could be such a person out there, doing their own thing.

I'm willing to grant that some guys might simply not want to fight professionally, perhaps for health reasons.

But I think it's been shown that that none of the traditional martial arts disciplines can hold up completely to high-level MMA on their own. Even the best BJJ guys and wrestlers need to train substantially to round out their skills.

[edit] As for your judo-karate example, I think we would know about such a person if there were one.
