Usually, it means "nonspecialized". Like for a lot of guys that started their training as mixed martial artists instead of starting with a heavy background in one of the specific wrestling / submission / striking arts.

That's what I figured. It seems like all MMA fighters and kind of that, although I do get the distinction of someone who started in a specific discipline and someone who started in an actually MMA gym.
