It's not like Machida has a history of getting knocked out or anything. Shogun's win is legit, but also kind of "freaky" under the circumstances.

He doesn't have a history of getting hit clean by powerful strikers either. Cause and effect. Shogun gameplanned to specifically counter his straight left, did, moved to mount and pounded him through the floor. Nothing freaky about it. So maybe he twisted his ridiculously fragile knee in the process. Rich Franklin just KOd Chuck with a broken arm.

On the other hand, maybe you're right and they would've fought for 10 more minutes and his knee would've exploded like Jared Hess'. I guess we'll never know. Either way, I don't think it's particularly relevant. What actually happened was Shogun killed the unbeatable pissman in brutal, devastating fashion in the first round.

All that's true. But in calling it "freaky" I'm keeping in mind that Shogun wasn't able to do it the first time around. If they fight again, will he be able to do it the next time around?

Who knows. But it's an interesting situation.

            True, who knows.

I do think that he was able to do that in the second fight in large part due to already fighting Machida for 25 minutes and knowing what's what. I really doubt they fight each other again anytime soon. Most people feel he won the first fight and the second fight was, well it was what it was.

Not right now, no coverage for surgery. I also have a badly torn left rotator cuff and buldging disc in my lower back. My septum is 90% pushed to the right side. I have a hernia. Guess you could say im pretty banged up. Only 32 on top of it.

Re: Shogun out till March 2011 with knee surgery

LAS VEGAS – On Friday, UFC president Dana White informed a small group of reporters that he expects UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua to be sidelined until March 2011 while recovering from knee surgery.

While the news proved surprising to most MMA observers, at least one prominent figure assumed the Brazilian slugger would be on the shelf for quite some time: current No. 1 challenger Rashad Evans.

"I kind of figured he would be out for awhile after his last fight hearing how he went into the fight beforehand," Evans told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Rua took the title from Lyoto Machida in the main event of May's UFC 113 event. Prior to the fight, ESPN analyst Franklin McNeil reported Rua would carry a pre-existing knee injury into the contest. Rua and White both denied the reports, though Rua did undergo surgery in June.

Meanwhile, Evans, himself a former champion, earned another shot at the title with a May win over rival Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in the main event of UFC 114. While waiting for Rua means Evans now will be sidelined for approximately 10 months, "Suga" said it's a price worth paying.

"At this point, unless they come up with an interim title, then I'll wait," Evans said. "Having a chance to fight for a title is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and I consider myself to be very lucky that I got two chances."

White seems optimistic that Rua's knee will indeed be healed in time for a spring defense. But if complications arise and an interim title is needed, a rematch between Evans and Machida certainly could prove a profitable venture.

In a June interview with MMAjunkie.com, Evans said he definitely expects to again face the man that handed him his first (and, to date, only) career loss.

"You know, revenge is a dish best served cold," Evans said in June. "I know I'm going to get my chance to fight [Machida] again, so it doesn't matter if I'm fighting him in my next fight or the fight after. I know I'm going to get the chance to fight him, and whenever I do, it's going to be me about just going out there exorcising some demons."

So while Evans does one day hope to avenge that defeat, for now, he'll keep his sights set directly on Rua and his shot to regain the title.

"God knows if I go out there and pass up this opportunity if I will ever get another shot."
