A heavyweight bout between former champ Frank Mir (14-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) and "The Ultimate Fighter 10" runner-up Brendan Schaub (7-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is expected to take place in early 2011.

Sources close to the event told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) verbal agreements are in place for the fight.

The bout could take place at UFC on Versus 3 on March 3 or UFC 129 on March 19, though neither show has been officially announced.

Schaub vs. Mir likely will be a featured main-card fight on whatever card it ends up being a part of.

Mir is coming off an impressive third-round knockout of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic in the headliner of September's UFC 119 event. In the four fights prior, he alternated between wins and losses. A TKO victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (for the interim belt) was followed by a TKO loss to Brock Lesnar (a title-unification bout). He responded with a submission win over Cheick Kongo but then suffered a quick KO loss to Shane Carwin.

Since a loss to Roy Nelson at The TUF 10 Finale, Schaub has posted three consecutive wins in the octagon. First came TKO wins over Chase Gormley and Chris Tuchscherer, and in October at UFC 121, he scored a dominating unanimous-decision win over Gabriel Gonzaga. A win over Mir could put him right at the top of the title picture in the heavyweight division.

He has a good shot but I don't think there is really a big difference in the standup between them. Schaub might have an edge, but the ground game is miles apart.

My brain tells me Mir will win, but my gut tells me Schaub via early KO.

He has a good shot but I don't think there is really a big difference in the standup between them. Schaub might have an edge, but the ground game is miles apart.

But Mir has to get it to the ground. And when was the last time he took a decent fighter down. Watching Mir ask a shot, worn out CroCop to go to the ground with him does not give me confidence in the fact that Mir can hang with a big, young, fastly improving fighter like Scaub.

^^^^^^^thats pretty much my thoughts. I love the guy, but he cant get a fight to the ground, unless he throws that bulls shit low kick and pulls guard.

I think Mir will beat him standing. For all his flaws, he has been doing pretty well striking at range. He got deathpunched by Carwin, but Schaub doesn't have that. Schaub will be trying to stick and move, I think Mir will catch him, Roy Nelson style. If not, he will get him down and tear his limbs off.

Schaub basically has to knock him out cold to get a stoppage, otherwise he could easily get Werdum'd trying to finish. He damn near got choked in the 5 seconds it was on the mat with GG.

But again, you can never be surprised if anyone blasts Mir out of the park.

yeah, I see that as his only path to victory.

But I think Mir could do the same thing, or he could KO him, or submit him, or win a ground oriented decision.

I just think Mir has many ways to win, and the only viable path for Schaub is just as likely for Mir IMO.

Famous last words. Mir is not near as good standing as you think he is. Once again, he was scared to death to stand with the extremely shot and slow CC. And Schaub is more than capable of knocking Mir out.

Of course Schaub will more than likely not sub Mir, but him TKO'ing or beating the shit out of Mir for 3 rounds is a very logical and probable outcome.

And what is going to happen when this thing hits the second round, and Schaub is still fresh and quick. And Mir is just plodding around the cage like he has concrete boots on like he was in the cro cop fight.
