I just had an interesting encounter.

I was walking to the store and, just as I was approaching, I noticed in my peripheral vision that someone was walking on the sidewalk in front of the store. I didn't pay it any attention until I realized that whoever it was had stopped and was trying to block my way.

I looked up and it was this black dude staring right at me. He said, "What? You want something?"

I stopped and stared at him for a few seconds and then said, "I'm just going to the store."

He said, "Then get your bitch ass into the store." I instantly went into a mental mode where I sized the situation up and tried to figure out how to best handle it.

Ultimately I thought to myself that this motherfucker was CLEARLY crazy as shit, so I just walked by him toward the door and then he said something else--can't remember what it was--and I stopped and turned around and looked at him again. It was one of those moments where you think to yourself, "Should I push this or just let it go?"

After a few seconds, I reached for the door. He started walking, stopped, and then said, "You're my enemy for life, cracker. And don't let me catch your ass in these streets again." Then he walked away.

The situation was interesting in a few ways. For one, it was a reminder that genuinely crazy, non-rational people exist in the world. For another, it also brought a newfound awareness to my mind that self-defense situations really can happen, because I thought that one was REAL close. And it also causes you to wonder what sort of approach you would take in such a situation.
