I don't like to wear anything that involves effort of being uncomfortable. Anytime I see someone that has gone to a lot of trouble, I always just think "why?" I don't care, I don't think they are bad people, I just wonder the motivation.

The 80's look thing, it is a lot of effort and it looks uncomfortable as hell. Same with most other "looks." Just put some fucking clothes on, I really don't understand the need to "express yourself" (through the current trend or whatever) and I have never understood the desire to stand out (or fit in) with clothes. Not knocking it, but the thought or desire just never formed in my mind.

I hear you, for the most part. I don't dress elaborately. Sometimes I DO see a style that I like--for instance, I liked Jack White's style when he appeared in that documentary "It Might Get Loud"--but to actually achieve that seems like a lot of work and it also doesn't seem particularly comfortable. But even with that said, while I'm mostly dedicated the jeans-and-t-shirt look (or sometimes the jeans-and-knit-shirt look) I still do things on my end to approach some semblance of style: I pick shirts that I like as opposed to just any old shirt, I try to pick jeans that actually look cooler than plain blue jeans, I keep my hair cut in a certain way, I wear my facial hair (or often times lack thereof) in a certain way, etc.

I guess part of this goes back to the old admonition from our parents to "take some pride in your appearance." And part of it is also to attract the opposite sex.
