Yeah he's got enough money where I'd be ok with being black.

So Roger is the best, Marcelo is right there (but currently probably 4th or 5th on the overall list). They have been on top the longest though. Rodolfo Viera is the current Absolute Champion, and he won Pan Ams this year too... I would put him at #2. Rafa Mendes is a lightweight, but he is top 5 for sure, he also has a very fun to watch style. Claudio Calasans is up there. Braulio has been injured, but he is top 10 no-gi. Bruno Malficine and Caio Terra are both very good roosterweights... Bruno won the last meeting at teh Worlds, but Caio got him at Pan Ams. Caio also beat a lot of 200# plus guys in the absolute, even though he only weighs 140. So that is pretty badass.
There are guys that I like to watch that have sort of retired or slowed down, and some of the guys I like just are not as good. BJJ is a lot like wrestling because of the tournament format, different gus are popping up and surprising all the time. Roger and Marcelo have managed to hand with the new class of guys, and they have been winning the longest, so they are 1 and 3 for me. But the most competitive match right now for Roger would probably be Rodolfo Viera. He might even beat him.2012: +19.33

Roger is the best, anyoe who says otherwise is just a hater. He has subbed everyone (including Xande and Jacare), and he has never been subbed. He has hasn't lost in 5 years, and he is an absolute champion in both the gi and no gi. You could argue Marcelo PFP is better, since he is so much smaller. Jacare has not competed in years, but when he was active, he was right there with them. I personally think he is a step down from Roger/Marcelo, but who knows if he would have kept competing. Xande is/was good, but not quite to Roger's level. He has been inactive as well. Popovitch is a beast, but he is not in the conversation.

As far as MMA, the only champions (Mundials or ADCC) that compete regularly are Roger, Jacare, and Werdum that I can think of. Werdum was ADCC champ, but he never won worlds. Mundials is still generally considered the most prestigious tourney in grappling. ADCC is by invite only, so there are oly a few matches to finals. I think Roger had to win 9 straight for worlds last year. I am sure there are others, but I ca't think of any right now.2012: +19.33

For ADCC: Monson, Rani Yahya.
Mundials: BJ Penn (oh yeah...), Andre Galvao, Gabriel Gonzaga, Vitor Ribeiro. Also, Pe de Pano is semi-active in MMA.
What do you think of the prestige level of the No-gi Mundials, relative to ADCC? Then we'd have to throw in Barnett.Comment

I was curious enough to look it up:

I forgot about Monson, Pe De Pano I thought about, but he isn't fighting. SHaolin, yes. Galvao- I honestly did not know he was a champion. I recalled him placing a few times, but I did not know he won his weight division. Gonzaga never won it though, he won Copa which is not the same. Heavyweight is so shallow in bjj. Barnett would have a good chance IMO in his weight class. If you look at all the absolute winners, almost none of them are HW's.2012: +19.33

Marcelo is just inventive and he is a master at taking the back and guillotine chokes. There is quote that goes something like "Most guys: if I don't get the choke, then what is the next move... Marcelo: there is no next move, I am going to get the choke."
Jacare stood out because of his athleticism. He was not as technical or smooth as Xande or Roger, but he had very good takedowns (that is how he beat Roger, he got a takedown, and then ran away for the rest of the match- though ROger did manage to break his arm even in defeat). He is explosive and quick and scrambles well.
Rafa Mendes is the new Marcelo, he is just making shit up out there. He does all sorts of inventive stuff, but has his basics down of course.
Popovitch is sort of like Jacare in that he is a physical specimen. He has a well rounded game, takedowns, passing, etc. He is not really a guard player either.
Rodolfo is just all around, he is also a freak athlete, has very good judo and very good passing skills. He mostly wins from top position.
Braulio is the reigning ADCC absolute champion. He is a guard player, and he has a killer reverse triangle, he got like 4 guys with it.
I have actually rolled with Braulio and Roger. Two totally different sensations of getting my ass beat. Braulio is not strong, I actually think I am considerably more powerful that he is, but I didn't even feel the sweep coming, and I was suddenly mounted. But up until then, I felt like I had some semblence of control over my fate. It was all a ruse of course, but he allows you to choose your demise. With Roger it was just a helpless feeling of domination and his mount is better than you would even think. Every time you breath in, he settles in lower and takes the space away, so after about 15 seconds, you just feel like you want out. BUt the usual tricks of shrimping or bridging are totally pointless. It is a matter of getting choked from mount, or giving your back and getting choked from the back.
Just for viewing pleasure, I recommend Rubens Charles (cobrinha), who is one the best guys over the last decade and has a fun style to watch.2012: +19.33
