Since you guys are talking stocks, what is a reasonable rate to expect on a mutual fund? What about having someone invest your money..is it safe? I keep seeing these guys on TV for stealing their investors cash.

It is pretty safe, IMO. A "reasonable" rate of return is probably about 8% over time. Historically, the S&P has returned around 10% annually. Some years you lose 40%, some years you make 40%, but it has always averaged around 10%. But that was the past, doesn't mean it will be that way going forward. I plan my retirement on a 10% expectation though.

That said, some mutual funds return A LOT more than that. But they carry additional risk too. Some return less, with almost no risk. But a moderate strategy will probably get you about 10%.
