lol, he really is. I think GSP is going to put him away within a few rounds. I don't think Shields will be able to close the distance on him. I was watching Shields on the countdown show, I think we will see a round of Shields shooting and missing my a mile, Demian Maia/Anderson Silva style... then GSP will poor it on and finish him off.

I really hope it is a competitive fight though. I would like to see how the grappling plays out.

My fear, is that he will smash the fuck out of Shields for a few rounds, and gets the idea in his head, that he should go out of his way to finish Sheilds to shut the haters up, and he gets subbed. If I didnt actually have a bet on him, I would say no chance it would happen, but now that My money is down, I am contemplating the what if's.

I don't see Shields as having that kind of submission game. He is a good positional grappler, but he not really what I would call a "slick" grappler. He doesn't just pull subs out of his ass, other than that guillotine choke. But with GSP's posture, I don't think he will get that on him. I mean, he couldn't sub Kampmann or Hendo, despite having them on the ground for extended periods of time. I said it before, I actually think GSP would beat him in a straight grappling match.

I think the biggest difference we're going to see here is the speed. GSP is fucking fast and Shields is slow, slow, slow.

That's one of the reasons I think he is going to be way short on his shots. Also, he just is not going to get close enough to set it up with his hands. GSP is going to keep him on the end of his jab... and Shields is going to have wade in to shoot, and he is going to eat a lot of shots. I really don't think Shields is going to be able to get close enough to shoot a decent shot... So he will have to resort to shoot and then fall back and dare GSP to come down, like Maia and Leites tried with Silva. GSP will probably oblige him later in the fight... but he will be too much.

This is exactly what is going to happen, you don't need to watch the fight now.

Yeah speed is going to be a factor here. I just can't see Shields getting inside for a clean takedown attempt because of the fact that GSP loves to strike from the outside with that karate base. He likes to wade in for a jab or a kick or use the superman punch to close in before he gets back out of dodge. Shields is going to be playing defense alot.

This was my first reaction when I heard the fight announced a long time ago. I just wonder if Shields is tough enough to make it to the end.

I was actually just thinking that. I was like, how do we know that GSP can avoid having Shields getting his hands on him when so many others have failed? But I agree, speed.

I refer back to Scientist, who referred to Silva/Maia.

Part of that was that Maia had no way to set up his shots... so he just had to dive in from like 5 feet away. It is really hard to get a deep shot without a setup. You can't just walk out and shoot and expect to get it. Just like anything else, you have to create the opening. I don't know how Shields can create an opening to get a good shot off. He is not going to be able to do what Kos did, winging haymakers that have to be addressed... he can try to do what Fitch tried, walk him down and press him on the cage, but we saw what happened there. But even Fitch threw punches that need to be paid attention to. Shields has literally the worst striking in the UFC at 170 IMO. There is no one he could beat in a striking affair in the entire division.
