Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 5/09/25

    May 9, 2025

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
    Friday, May 9, 2025
    Santa Anita Park

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 3-Outworker
    ; 5-Going Nowhere.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Outworker has little to beat in this state-bred maiden special weight turf miler, and a recent bullet five furlong workout (:59 3/5) indicates he’s ready to produce a forward move in just his fourth career start. The T. Yakteen-trained colt projects to inherit a cozy second flight, ground-saving trip and had every chance from there. Going Nowhere has gradually rising speed figures, with room for further improvement and is the one to fear most.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:32 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 4-Auditory;
    5-Crypto Crush.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Auditory hits rock bottom in this $5,000 seller and anything close to her best speed figure will be good enough. The route-to-sprint angle and the return to dirt are other positives factors that clearly make her the one to beat, though at 7/5 on the morning line she won’t be offering any real wagering value. Crypto Crush also turns back in trip, returns to dirt, and tackles much easier foes. She’s a contender by default in an empty affair.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 2:04 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 3-Dealers Special;
    4-Rastaman Vibe.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Dealers Special didn’t have much behind him but earned a confidence-building win over this course and distance last time out and returns after a couple of months off protected in a proper spot for a repeat score. The R. Baltas-trained gelding earned a career top number in that victory and shows a bullet workout since to remain right on edge. Rastaman Vibe is winless in 11 starts over the local lawn and certainly isn’t one to trust but on pure form could be a logical exacta partner with our top pick.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:34 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 4-Charley Pride;
    3-James J. Braddock.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Charley Pride is being tossed away in this maiden $12,500 claimer and is realistically spotted after failing to come close to justifying his blue blood pedigree. It’s simply time to win a race and move on. James J. Braddock is another big class dropper trying to find his winning level. He’s a fit on numbers and projects to be forwardly placed in what almost certainly will be a slowly run affair.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 3:05 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 6-Lamporghini
    ; 2-Danzingwith Maxine.
    Backups: 5-Song of Shadows.

Forecast: Lamporghini is a three time winner over this turf course but her recent form has been below her best, so this class drop into the allowance optional $20,000 state-bred claiming ranks is warranted. Her best race is good enough. Danzingwith Maxine has a gradually improving pattern, and with another forward move could be competitive on the raise after winning over this course and distance from starter’s allowance foes last time out. She employs a good stalking style and will have dead aim from the head of the lane to the wire.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:35 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 6-Pio Nono.
    Backups
    : 2-Last Call Paul.

Forecast: Pio Nono was well-meant in his debut but just fell short by a neck in a similar maiden $50,000 dash for state-bred foes and nothing more should be needed to earn his diploma in this modest affair in which the horse to fear most, Last Call Paul, is a 21-race maiden. The son of Catholic Boy gets an extra half furlong to work with and should be capable of wearing down the leaders in the final furlong as a recommended rolling exotic single.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 4:05 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 2-Sareeha (Ire);
    5-Runamileinmyshoes.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Sareena (Ire) is a professional race mare with winning form over the local lawn and though missing as the favorite in a similar event last time out gets a good spot to make amends from a comfortable inside draw that should ensure a ground-saving trip. Runamileinmyshoes is the one to fear most and will be hard to catch again if she’s allowed to dictate the pace without pressure, which certainly is a plausible pace scenario. Both should be included in rolling exotic play.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:35 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 5-Woodbine Way
    ; 6-Tessa (GB).
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Woodbine Way returns to her claim (and winning) level and seems reasonably solid in this $5,000 claiming abbreviated sprint for older fillies and mares. She was out of her element when overmatched by her new connections last time out but gets realistic today. Tessa (GB) finished a solid runner-up behind ‘Way when they squared off in early April should be in the fray once again.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 5:05 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket: 1-One of These Days (Ire)
    .
    Backups: 8-Naismith.

Forecast: In his first outing since October, One of These Days drops into a realistic spot for the money run, lands the good rail, and should have no excuses in this restricted (nw-2) $25,000 claiming turf router for older horses. The barn has solid stats with layoff runners and the work tab at Los Alamitos should have him fit enough. Anything close to his best race is simply better than these.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

      May 9, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card featuring the Blue Chip Matchmaker Final and the Borgata Pace Final. Those races are part of the $2 Late Pick 4 that starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Aardie B Miki N (6/5)-Comes into the Final with a perfect 4-4 record in Bluechip Matchmaker races. The price is what it is, and drawing the rail makes this a must use. Has the gate speed to get the top and knows how to finish off miles.
2-Walkin On Sunshine (4-1)-Got into the pocket from the 6-hole last time and finished behind the one above. Has the tactical speed to get the same trip and will need to find a way by the chalk. It won't be easy but if Miki loses this one has the best chance of taking a picture.

      Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

1-Verdun (8-1)-Pat Lachance should have this fine veteran in striking range and will be pace dependent, but the fractions should be hot. If the speed falters the 5-year-old can roll by them all. Loves Yonkers (27-13-7-4) and when not winning is usually in the hunt.
5-Mossdale Ben N (5/2)-Ben has won 7 of 9 at Yonkers and has never seen the top during the opening half mile. Super competitive 7-year-old has a pilot in Jordan Stratton that knows how tackle foes down the lane. Ben will probably race wide much of the mile but shouldn't be counted out.
8-Coaches Corner (4-1)-The post draw makes the price, and Jason Bartlett has no choice but to have the pedal down when the wings fold. Has the speed to land on top and could pull off an upset if its tank isn't drained in the opening quarter.

      Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

4-Creative Venture (7/2)-Started slowly, 12 lengths back at the 1st call and rallied to finish 3rd. Drops and hasn't been in this cheap in a long time. Gets a new pilot if Brent Holland and it could be "go" time when the wings fold.
5-Haloa (4-1)-Ships in from Philly and raced evenly in the 1ts race since 10-14. Bartlett steers the Engblom trainee in its Yonkers debut and will respect chances against a beatable field.

      Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

3-Kairakiconfidntl N (5/2)-Was driven aggressively off the gate while facing $20k claimers in last. That wasn't the usual game plan and faded down the lane. This field doesn't appear more difficult and gets a positive driver change in Anthony Napolitano taking the lines. Comes back in sequence this time rather than 3 weeks between races and could be sitting on a big try.
7-Big Bettor Hanover (5-1)-Team Stratton entry makes the 2nd start off a claim. Was handled conservatively in last but did go a 57.1 back half. Should be better in the 2nd race on the oval and has the gate speed to be put in play early in the mile.

      $2 Late Pick 4

      1,2/1,5,8/4,5/3,7
      Total Bet=$48

Pimlico Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, May 9

        May 9, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

        PIMLICO LATE PICK 4
        Friday, May 9, 2025

Pimlico Race Course, the second oldest track in America, readies for next week’s 150th running of the Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of thoroughbred horse racing’s Triple Crown. But fans looking to get a head start on the action can do so this Friday, May 9, as the meet begins with a nine-race card and a popular 50-cent Late Pick 4 wager that shapes up this way:

PIM 6th race (2:55 p.m. EST) -- REGAL MISS LILY spotted the field several lengths when she broke in the air in her debut, but she advanced quickly on the rail into contention on the turn. She couldn’t keep up with the lead trio – two who came back to win -- on a sloppy track. She should retain good betting value with a few high-profile barns represented and is a must use in the leadoff leg with the addition of blinkers. BRIGHTNESS chased the 4-1 winner in the 4-path and ‘kept on with good energy’ in an improved second start on a day when 3 of 4 dirt sprints were won in wire-to-wire fashion. Eric Camacho rode two horses for top trainer Brittany Russell in the last 3 years. Post Time won at first asking and blossomed into a Grade II winner, Breeders’ Cup runner-up and a millionaire. Silver Trinket ran second at 7-5 odds in her debut at this level. It’s a point worth nothing, but for value purposes, I’ll pass on MA MA MA MY MEKOMA in the Pick 4.

PIM 7th race (3:28 p.m. EST) -- SAKETUMI blew past the favored pace setter in a ‘key’ turf route two starts back, a performance that was bolstered when Major Thomas came back to win an allowance and place in a grass stakes race. He raced close-up behind a fast pace in a follow-up try on the lawn at 1-1/16 miles, but was no match for the deep closers. WISH ME HOME, a $268k turf earner with a 24/6-3-6 record, returns home for his seasonal debut and runs for the cheapest tag of his career. Classy 10-year-old BODE’S MAKER is reunited with trainer Jamie Ness, who won four consecutive turf routes when he first claimed the gelding three years ago. He is 7-for-16 on turf, 6-for-12 with Ness and a major player yet again. (Note: If the race is taken off the turf, add #3 YOUR ANALYSIS to the ticket.)

PIM 8th race (4:01 p.m. EST) -- TRES ARIES ran a scare into the 3-to-5 winner at 7F as her three-race winning streak ended. She takes another confident class hike for trainer Claudio Gonzalez, who excels with claims and is 18-for-102 the last three years on the sprint-to-route angle. Her uncoupled stablemate, ROSIEONTHERIVER, rallied for photo-finish victories at three distances in her last six starts. MISCHIEF IN MOTION arrives from Tampa Bay Downs off an impressive second-out victory going long for the first time. She stalked the pace under a ‘snug hold’ and took command when asked. The $525,000 sales buy is working forwardly for her return from a three-month layoff.

PIM 9th race (4:34 p.m. EST) -- DARK LUTE disappeared as a debut favorite in an 11-horse field at Turfway Park, but can’t be discounted as the lightweight in a field of unproven routers. His stablemate, MAMBA MINDSET, draws the rail and has three recent third-place finishes to summon, the latest at 6F when finishing behind the two favorites who both returned with victories. GOLD ASPEN failed at 5-2 odds or less in his last five starts and is difficult to take as one of a handful of underperformers in this barn. TYSON’S DELIVERY, the son of 2018 Breeders Cup Classic winner Accelerate, goes long for the first time and can use his speed well after chasing the 1-to-9 winner last out. PARLAY FOR DESTINY was eased as a beaten favorite repeater, but he is a good fit on his best effort and a 2nd-of-68 workout in :48-1/5 since his last start is a good sign.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        PIM 6th Race: 1, 5
        PIM 7th Race: 8, 9, 11
        PIM 8th Race: 2, 3, 6
        PIM 9th Race: 1, 4, 6, 7
        Cost: $36

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Santa Anita - Race #1
#7 Non Domicile Guessing we'll see something a bit better this time around as the blinkers come off for this second career start. Reasonable upside today.
#5 Going Nowhere Mild worry about the way he has given away some ground late in his last two, but he should be in line for another good trip right up near the top in a spot without much serious speed.
#3 Outworker His dirt form is OK and might stack up well enough if he can transfer something similar over to the turf. Could get a similar trip to Going Nowhere while moving around two turns.
Race Summary Non Domicile didn't show much at first asking, but he can come forward today with that race under his belt.
          Santa Anita - Race #5
#3 Ultimate Hy Toss her last and the turf form is pretty reliable, and she has been drawn out on the AE list a couple of times in recent racing days. Dangerous with this group.
#7 Baby Kristen Outside pace could force the issue the entire way, and there are a couple races on her page that seem like they might be competitive here.
#2 Danzingwith Maxine Her baseline stuff is competitive here, and she's already starting to pull together some pretty reliable turf form. In the mix.
Race Summary Ultimate Hy can be forgiven for her last, and she has some finishing appeal while cutting back to this turf sprint. Think she's the right one, and maybe Baby Kristen can stick around for a piece.
          Santa Anita - Race #7
#6 Omnipotent Not sure she's the most likely winner in here, but I think several of them have a chance in this spot, and she should get an OK trip today. Midrange price chance.
#7 Khinjani She's back on the drop out of Grade III company, and her closing kick might be potent at this shorter kind of trip than she has typically handled.
#2 Sareeha She should be in a good spot turning for home, and she has been pretty competitive when racing in this kind of allowance spot.
Race Summary Omnipotent was no match for Sareeha a couple starts back, but she might be a bit tighter now than she was in that spot going second off a long layoff.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Pimlico - Race #1
#3 DOOR GUNNER JOE (10-1) Drops for return, dam handled the turf well, price shot in weak field.
#1 EFFICACY (8-5) Made up- 8 lengths in final half-mile of higher-tagged grass sprints.
#7 MY LUCKY VALENTINE (2-1) Met 2-to-5, 2-1 and 5-2 winners in his last four starts on main track.
Race Summary Taking a longshot stab on DOOR GUNNER JOE, who returns from a seven-month layoff as a gelding and in a new barn. He stepped it up a notch for a :48-2/5 workout two weeks ago and his dam, Ten Coins, finished second in MSW company in her only two starts on turf, one going a route of ground at Monmouth. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-7 exactas.
            Pimlico - Race #2
#6 MIDNIGHT RENEGADE (4-1) Good rush after poor start at 7F, same move on cutback works well.
#7 BEACH COWBOY (3-1) Out-dueled the favorite before the top pair passed by in the stretch.
#5 ABUELO PAPS (8-5) Returns from long layoff with 18-38 in-money record and $235K bankroll.
Race Summary MIDNIGHT RENEGADE, squeezed back to last as the favorite, rushed up 4-wide to engage the leaders into the turn. He led briefly approaching the stretch but drifted out and lacked further kick. He shortens up in distance off the re-claim by Gaudet. Bet to win and place and play 6-2, 6-4, 6-5 and 6-7 exactas.
            Pimlico - Race #4
#6 DEWY’S BEAST (2-1) Could shift into ‘Beast Mode’ and carry speed to victory in this barn.
#3 RAPIDITY (5-2) First or second in all three starts in 2025, use in all gimmick wagers.
#1 WOODLINE (8-1) Consistent form in Charles Town allowance ranks, the latest in a 2-turn sprint.
Race Summary DEWY’S BEAST was out-dueled by the 7-1 winner and caught by the odds-on favorite for the place spot in a 7F sprint at Keeneland. All that could change quickly, however, as he returns to a distance at which he stands 8/2-1-2 and makes his first start off the Farrior claim. Bet to win and place.

                  Pimlico - Race #4 - Post: 1:48pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $30,000 Class Rating: 85

                  Rating:

                  #1 WOODLINE (ML=8/1)
                  #6 DEWY'S BEAST (ML=2/1)
                  #3 RAPIDITY (ML=5/2)

WOODLINE - This gelding usually does his best running late. Look for him back of the pack early in the race and finishing strongly on the tiring speed horses. DEWY'S BEAST - The rider and trainer combination here have a high win pct when they team up. I think the shorter distance will help this gelding stay the distance. This gelding is in fine form. Finished third on Apr 16th. Dropping down in class rating points from his April 16th race at Keeneland. Based on that data point, I will give this animal the edge. RAPIDITY - A repeat of that latest effort on April 11th where he recorded a speed fig of 79 looks lofty enough to score in this event. I like to bet on this handicapping angle, a pony coming back off a nice contest within the last thirty days. This horse is utmost in EPS (earnings per start). He looks sharp in today's clash.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 IT'LL DO (ML=3/1), #4 BERMUDA RUN (ML=6/1),

IT'LL DO - When checking today's class figure, he will have to garner a much better speed figure than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint. BERMUDA RUN - The eighth place result in the last affair was not the greatest. Don't feel this mount will do much running today. That last speed rating was pedestrian when compared with today's class rating. Recent lessening speed figs of 81/67/53 give a clue that this animal may be going off form.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 WOODLINE to win at post-time odds of 4/1 or better

                    # 5 MONEY IN MOTION 2/1
                    # 7 CONTRABANDISTA 7/2
                    # 6 LIONS NOT SHEEP 3/1
I think MONEY IN MOTION is a very good choice. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the strongest class figs of this group. Has run soundly when travelling a dirt route race. Always hard to beat Arnett and Birzer working together, winning 23 percent of their races. CONTRABANDISTA - Reason to like this gelding as he has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days. Ought to be given consideration based on the solid speed fig posted in the last affair. LIONS NOT SHEEP - With Bacon aboard him, this gelding should be able to break out early in this competition. Last time out, this gelding was up against a stronger field.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 1 NIGHT TRIX 3/1
                      # 3 ALPINE ASH 2/1
                      # 4 MAY B BETTER 7/2
NIGHT TRIX looks to be a very good contender. Could provide positive gains based on strong recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 61. Medina's ROI over the last month automatically makes this equine a strong contender. Will probably go to the front end and should never look back. ALPINE ASH - With a nice class rating average of 64, has one of the strongest class advantages in this field. Her 51 average has this filly with among the top speed figures in this contest. MAY B BETTER - When a conditioner brings any animal back this soon it is a positive sign. Must be given a chance based on the decent Equibase Speed Figure garnered in the last affair.

                        Century Mile - Race #3 - Post: 7:15pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,500 Class Rating: 78

                        Rating:

                        #5 BURNLEY (ML=3/1)

BURNLEY - Gelding has shown some speed. This shorter distance should be better for him. Gelding looks like the lone speed here. He may turn the race into a procession. Hasn't run at today's distance recently but does have a figure earned last time he tried this trip good enough to win.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #1 LAHUN (ML=5/2), #3 INDEPENDENCE NEIGH (ML=4/1), #4 DIVAANY (ML=5/1),

LAHUN - I normally try to beat this kind of chalk. Extended layoff and no drop in level of competition. This horse doesn't have a tenacious demeanor. Often finishes in the place and show spots. Finished first in his most recent race with a pedestrian fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this group. INDEPENDENCE NEIGH - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in short distance contests in order to wager on him. DIVAANY - Awfully difficult to play this runner when he hasn't been showing any signs of life lately.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 BURNLEY on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more
