Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 12, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card, and the $1.00 Pick 5 starts in Race 5. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 6 and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on fast track.

    Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

1-Bullville Frank (5-1)-The Engblom trainee was bet down to 9/5 last time and went off stride in the first turn. It was an ugly weather night, Frank and my other choice broke stride early on. Went off as 3/2 chalk 2 back and tried to wire the field that night but came up a nose short. Yannick Gingras is back and looks like a main player with a smooth trip.
4-Final Cheeserecipe (8-1)-Makes the first start for the Burke barn and has bene claimed 6 times since Jan 30. Broke last week approaching the gate. This will be the first time going for the Burke barn since all the claiming action and gets a new pilot in Scott Zeron. Will look for improvement at a big number and wouldn’t be shocked if lands in the pocket.

    Race 7 (8:45 EDT)

2-Scribblers (7/2)-Has raced well but was in against a well-meant winner in the last 2 who is not in this field. This will be the 3rd straight try at this level and has finished 3rd and 2nd last week. Gingras should land on top when the wings fold and could be tough to tackle.
3-Trendy Teen (9/5)-Has raced well in the last 5 starts this year and steps up after a win. Has come within a nose of taking 3 straight pictures. Next stop on the comeback trail is the $50k claimers and Jason Bartlett can work an efficient trip and seal the deal.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

4-Dunkin (3-1)-Finally got off the schnide after bagging the first win in 10 races this year. Went gate to wire in a 1.25-mile race and there was never a doubt from start to finish. George Brennan is back and could try the same script here.
5-Nandolo N (5-1)-Jason Bartlett is between the pipes tonight and this race might set up for a closer. Should get a good trip with this post draw and could finish best of all at a solid price if the fractions are spicy.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Covered Bridge (7/2)-Lately, has raced the best when getting the top off the gate. Will look for that game plan and gets a new set of hands in Scott Zeron. Beaten chalk was somewhat paced compromised last time as the 1st half went in 58.1. Could control the mile and that might be the winning difference.
7-Diego N (4-1)-Peter Tritton veteran has looked really good in its US races and has won the last 2 going gate to wire. Not sure getting on the engine works here but could rally off cover like it did 3 back and still keep its win streak intact.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    1,4/2,3/4,5/1,7
    Total Bet=$32

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Thistledown - Race #2
#2 Collect Gold She took a nice step forward last time out and seems to be holding her better form a bit right now, and there are a couple of tough names in her running lines from those last several races.
#4 Vesper Martini Fresh face isn't meeting the deepest crew at first asking, and she appears to be working forwardly enough to think she might be ready to go. Check her out.
#7 Dollar Dance Her tendency to give away ground late in the lane is an issue, but she draws well to force the issue with a bit of pace. Not impossible, but guessing she'll get outfinished by at least one of them again.
Race Summary Collect Gold looks the part here, and I'm hoping she'll offer something close to 2/1 in a pretty modest looking field.
      Thistledown - Race #7
#7 Sgt York He's back fresh off a couple of solid running lines last year, and he traded decisions with an OK runner in those last couple starts. Interesting here if he's ready to roll.
#2 Hidden Ransom Think he's the other tough face in here -- he should get a perfect trip right up on the splits, and his form is pretty imposing once you draw a line through the route try.
#5 Sadie's Silver Kid Think there might be a bit of midrange price appeal here. He's back off the bench after turning in the best effort of his career, so I'm hoping he's ready to bring one of those better efforts that would keep him in the frame with these.
Race Summary Sgt York may not offer his 9/2 ML price, but I think he has a right to be tough here if he is ready to run off the layoff. Think he'll find an OK tracking spot.
      Thistledown - Race #8
#5 Catty Remark She's back to try winners after getting over the top last out, and her form is generally heading in a good direction right now. Wouldn't surprise right back. Owns some of the only finishing form in here.
#7 Special Collette She didn't back the debut score up at all when trying winners at Mahoning last month, but I'm guessing she's capable of something a bit better than that here.
#2 Bold Ruby She's not the most likely winner in here by any stretch, but I think she could find a decent spot while tucked in just behind some more committed forward players. Not impossible that she settles and finds a seam.
Race Summary Catty Remark should get a good setup in a spot with a few forward players, and she should be able to sit back and watch everything unfold a bit before launching a midpack rally.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #1
#4 IN BOND WE TRUST (9-5) Lands in dream spot off freshening to bounce back as twice-beaten fave.
#6 MR PELOTON (3-1) Two-time winner at 5-1/2F runs for cheapest price of his career.
#2 HAY SCOOBY DOO (8-5) Can maximize his speed at proven distance in repeat attempt.
Race Summary Hard to look past the favorites in this spot. IN BOND WE TRUST is re-united with Oklahoma-bred rivals and gets the nod after he was beaten favorite the last two times out. He tracked the dueling leaders two back but earned his top speed figure in defeat. Then he was ‘blocked into upper stretch’ and lacked a rally after he was free of traffic last out. Bet to win and place and play 4-2 and 4-6 exactas.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #2
#6 FUN AS ALL GIT OUT (5-1) Adds blinks, gets call by default against several other rivals who just met.
#2 SURE THING SAMURAI (6-1) Mild bid versus similar two back, lacked room in lane, gets Pusac.
#3 TAIL OF WHOA (9-5) Split rivals late to finish second as FANCY FREIDA came back to the pack.
Race Summary Trying to beat morning-line favorite FANCY FREIDA, who adds blinkers but who had everything her own way in the same spot two back and wilted on a clear lead in the final sixteenth. FUN AS ALL GIT OUT earned competitive speed figures at Sam Houston but had little to offer in her first start locally at 6F. She was bumped hard at the start two back at this distance, pressed a slow pace to the 3/8 pole and lacked stretch kick. She adds blinkers and should offer better than her 5-1 morning-line price, so bet to win and place.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #3
#7 GOLD MEMBER (2-1) Went down fighting as odds-on choice in shorter sprint, today’s Best Bet.
#4 BARREL THEIF (3-1) Has a win and two seconds in last six sprints for higher claiming tags.
#2 TEXAN FARMER (7-2) Hit board in 8 of 15 sprints at various tracks, makes seasonal debut.
Race Summary GOLD MEMBER ‘took command’ while 4-wide at the top of the stretch, braced for the challenge of the 7-to-5 winner but settled for second on the class drop to this level. He goes an extra half-furlong today, but a duplicate move should lead to the winners’ circle. Bet to win and place and play a 7/2, 4/ALL trifecta.

              # 1 IT'S A RAINY DAY 8/1
GOLD MEMBER is the strongest bet in this race. Will almost certainly compete solidly in the early speed contest which bodes well with this group. Could beat this group given the 67 Equibase Speed Fig put up in his last outing. The average class figure of 59 makes this entrant hard to beat. BARREL THIEF - Appears to have a respectable class edge based on the most recent company kept. Has performed admirably recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 62 avg Equibase Speed Fig. IT'S A RAINY DAY - Ran a sharp last race.

                # 10 NOW AND LATER 10/1
KITODAN looks solid to best this field. Could provide positive profits based on formidable recent Speed Figures with an average of 96. Walsh has one of the strongest winning percentages in this field with entries running at this distance and surface. Ran a very strong last race. RISK MANAGER - Lately Ramos has been scorching which may give the edge to this horse. Has been running soundly lately and will most likely be up on the front end early on. NOW AND LATER - This horse has been consistently racing well in his latest outings.

                  Parx Racing - Race #5 - Post: 2:28pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 42

                  Rating:

                  #2 MIA COUNTING (ML=5/1)
                  #6 LADY AMELIE (ML=5/1)

MIA COUNTING - The jock and handler combination have a profitable ROI when they combine forces. Was in a $15,000 Maiden Claiming race at Parx Racing last time around the track. That race had a class rating of 56 and she is moving down today. A certain win candidate. LADY AMELIE - Faced tougher last time around the track at Parx Racing. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker field, so I will put this animal on my list of contenders. This filly notched a good figure of 29 in her last event. That speed fig should be good enough to score today.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #4 DON'T POST IT (ML=5/2), #5 PERSUASIVE (ML=3/1), #3 R SPECIAL (ML=9/2),

DON'T POST IT - Apr 16th is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. PERSUASIVE - This filly finished out of the top three on Feb 23rd and wasn't close to victory last time around the track either. 3/1 is not offering enough value for any horse in a sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint race of late. R SPECIAL - Today's event is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance clash in the last 60 days. Not the greatest of signals. When checking today's Equibase class figure, she will have to notch a better fig than in the last race to vie in this dirt sprint.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 MIA COUNTING to win if you can get at least 3/2 odds

ROMANIAN PRINCE - This gelding is almost always on the board. The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of handler Zielinski. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. This campaigner coming off a good effort in the last 30 days is a serious competitor in my humble opinion. WIN HERBIE WIN - When this jockey and trainer combine forces you have to take a look. Fernandez and Cline have been great together. Earnings per race is something that I think can be a very valuable selection factor. This thoroughbred is ranked number one in this field. Carrying 7 pounds less this race. Trainer has him in a good spot.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 REIGNING DREAM (ML=9/5), #4 CLEAN MACHINE (ML=3/1),

REIGNING DREAM - Tough to like the downward flow (79/76/71) of speed ratings. CLEAN MACHINE - This gelding hasn't had any recent success in sprint events. I find it hard to wager on him in this contest. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put him on the likely underpriced contenders list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - WIN HERBIE WIN - Cline is giving Lasix to this horse. A chance at a big improvement should be expected.
