Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 16, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yonkers Raceway begins the weekend with a 10-race card. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Gooden Quest N (6-1)-This mare gets good results when leaving from the inside. Gets a new set of hand with Pat Lachance taking the lines, fits, and should offer a square price.
4-Kiss My Cheek (7/5)-This is a competitive mare who took advantage of a hot fractions and took off in the 2nd half for the 2nd win in 9 starts this year. Looks like a major player and should get a smooth trip.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

1-Torrone (4-1)-The 0-11 record is an issue but takes a good drop to a competitive level. Should be in play from start to finish leaving from the rail. Brent Holland gets the most out this mare and can have in position to get a win.
2-Bontoni Delgato S (8-1)-Put in a qualifier at MR on 5-7 and the Mark Ford barn post 24% winners off a layoff. Fits with this kind and Yannick Gingras could look to get the point and play catch me if you can.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Vibrance (5/2)-Raced wide in last and was still able to roll by down the lane. Now bumps up but will respect chances of a double up in a race without a standout.
5-Katies Up (4-1)-This will be the 1st race in the Petter Engblom barn and raced well in last. Takes a meaningful drop and should be in play off the gate.
7-Talent To Spare A (8-1)-Bumps up after a sharp win and has some gate speed to get a decent seat off the gate. Could look to come off cover tonight and finish best of all.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

4-Creative Venture (7/5)-Doesn't usually leaves to get on the engine but did so last time. Worked to get the top and faded late in the mile. Could be sitting on a big try and doesn't need to lead every step of the way to beat this crew. Holland could work an efficient trip, and this time prove to be the best down the lane.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    1,4/1,2/1,5,7/4
    Total Bet=$24

Pimlico Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, May 16

      May 16, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

      PIMLICO LATE PICK 4
      Friday, May 16, 2025

The sun is setting fast on Pimlico Race Course’s storied 150-year history, but before the sun sets on Preakness weekend, racing fans can create their own memories, starting with the 50-cent Late Pick 4 Friday, May 16. More than $400,000 was bet on last year’s Black-Eyed Susan Day Pick 4 and with three graded stakes and 44 entries in this year’s sequence, it could trigger a big payout. And don't forget to play in Friday & Saturday's $20,000 Exacta-Thon with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet, where there's also a $10 Money-Back Special on win bets for the Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness Stakes.

Here’s a look at the Friday action:

PIM 10th race (4:07 p.m. EST) -- Thirteen 3-year-old fillies are scheduled to go post-ward in the $150,000 Miss Preakness Stakes in search of their first graded stakes victory. California invader VODKA WITH A TWIST is the class of the field and knocking on the door with two Grade I placings as a 2-year-old. She raced close up for 6F in her seasonal debut and ‘fought on’ to the quarter pole in the 1-1/16- mile Santa Anita Oaks despite early trouble. She worked a pair of 5F bullets since that start and should have plenty of pace to run at if she avoids a wide trip in her first start outside of post 6. STUNNER blazed 4 furlongs in :46.3 since her runner-up finish in the Grade II Beaumont at 7F. She was no match for three-peat winner Verity as the odds-on favorite on a sloppy track. FAMILY could be fastest away on the switch to the high-percentage barn of Saffie Joseph Jr., who won with two of the last four new acquisitions that he ran in graded stakes company. She is my top choice in here. Longshots G.W.’s GIRL and HIGH PAF get a spot on the ticket. G.W.’S GIRL proved versatile in a pair of minor stakes wins at this distance and was heavily bet before back-pedaling against STUNNER in the Beaumont. HIGH PAF takes a big jump in class, but she overcame slow starts with a pair of photo-finish victories and has the right running style for the top local barn of trainer Brittany Russell.

PIM 11th race (4:38 p.m. EST) -- The winners of the $100,000 The Very One this decade arrived from four different tracks and paid an average of $11.60 to win. More than half the full field in this year’s 5F turf sprint for fillies and mares arrive from various venues. The late-running LOON CRY is 7-for-11 on the lawn, a two-time stakes winner and a deserving favorite. She has navigated crowded fields before but has never raced this short of a distance. With a 40-percent chance of rain in the advance forecast, I’m going 8-deep in this leg.

PIM 12th race (5:10 p.m. EST) -- PYRENEES reportedly will be scratched from his title defense in the Grade III, $250,000 Pimlico Special. Either way, PHILEAS FOGG will be a solo play in the Pick 4, albeit at a much shorter price than his 5-1 morning line. He was taken off the rail to stalk the pace in the 1-1/4-mile Excelsior Handicap at Aqueduct, inhaled the hellbent leader on the turn and drew away from the pursuing favorites for his fourth open-length, long-distance victory in five starts for trainer Gustavo Rodriguez.

PIM 13th race (5:44 p.m. EST) -- RUNNIN N GUNNIN, slowed by the pace when third in the Grade II Fantasy at Oaklawn Park, goes 1-1/8 miles for the first time as she looks to make amends in the featured Grade II Black-Eyed Susan. She left too much work to do as the top pair separated from the field, but her performance was enhanced when fifth-place finisher KINZIE QUEEN – one of her rivals today – won a $200,000 allowance and sixth-place Princess Aliyah returned to win a $200,000 stakes race. The daughter of 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner won the $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks at one mile in the race prior, before sixth-place finisher Maysam came back to win the Grade III Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita. AMARTH settled into a good stalking position in her one-mile seasonal debut in the Busher Invitational at Aqueduct. She swept to a brief lead on the turn and shook from the duel at the 16th pole before the winner rallied from far back. She was no factor in the Grade I Ashland last out. MARGIE’S INTENTION has two wins, two seconds and three 78 Beyer speed figures in four starts this year while facing eight next-out winners along the way.

      Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
      PIM 10th Race: 3, 4, 5, 6, 12
      PIM 11th Race: 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14
      PIM 12th Race: 1
      PIM 13th Race: 3, 4, 5, 8
      Cost: $80

Jeremy Plonk: $94K Carryover Pick 6 Analysis for Santa Anita Fri.

        May 15, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Santa Anita opens its racing week Friday with a $94,783 carryover in the traditional $2 pick 6. The sequence begins in Race 4 of 9 at approximately 5:34 pm ET. Let’s take a look at each leg.

Race 4: 2YO maiden special weight dirt sprint

Must Use: 2 Light One Up
Consider: 1 La Ville Lumiere, 6 Velvet Dream, 4 Fire Ile

Trainer Doug O’Neill hits 31% with May juveniles at Santa Anita over the past decade and is 24-45 in the exacta with such. His Light One Up worked well from the gate inside on video and should be ready-made. Slight edge over La Ville Lumiere, an expensive, sharp worker for Michael McCarthy, who rarely has early 2YOs like this in California with no success yet.

Race 5: NorCal-restricted allowance turf sprint

        Must Use: 1 Zeus’ War
        Consider: none

Big class edge here for Zeus’ War, whose NorCal experience includes the Pleanton Mile and Oakland Stakes, premier races on the former circuit. Local turf sprint form eliminates many of the question marks others possess.

        Race 6: claiming dirt mile

Must Use: 2 Super Max, 7 Asmodeus
        Consider: 4 Be Punctual, 6 Mici’s Express, 5 Damazio

Decent-enough options to consider 5-deep with bigger budgets, but give me a speed and a closer to get through this affair. Supermax rallied nicely to win last out at 20-1 and is 10-1 in the morning line for a John Sadler barn going very well right now while other ‘name’ brands in this race have been struggling locally of late. Among the early speeds, Asmodeus overcame a terrible post 10 last time and delivered on the Kentucky export’s first local bid. Only win of meet for Peter Miller so far, a good sign for the horse at least.

Race 7: Cal-bred turf sprint allowance

Must Use: 2 Tight Squeeze, 5 Rosa Parks, 7 Guiltyofhavingfun
        Consider: none

Lava Lucy will try to clear fast from the outside, but will be stretched too thin going 6-1/2 furlongs and give those first-over pressers Rosa Parks and Guilftyofhavingfun a great shot at inheriting the lead and control late. Tight Squeeze came out of a cannon late in her debut and will have to work out a trip from the inside while capable. Good options.

Race 8: maiden claiming dirt sprint

Must Use: 4 Petite Ange, 8 Babe Kelso
        Consider: none

Frankly, it’s a terrible bunch, and Petite Ange likely found a friendly enough group to graduate in her 15th start. Her dirt sprints actually are standouts vs. these unless rookie Babe Kelso has some game. Home-bred is out of a highly productive mare, but weak human connections statistically likely won’t attract much money. Won’t argue if you opt to single Petite Ange vs. doubling the cost of the ticket.

        Race 9: claiming turf mile

Must Use: 9 Empress Ellie, 1 Big Mama Sue, 2 Super Ellie
        Consider: none

Not much separates the trio here, including the likely shorter prices on all three, unfortunately. Empress Ellie is top choice off those autumn tries at this $25,000 claiming level at Del Mar and Santa Anita. Big Mama Sue failed at 1-to-2 odds last time vs. several of these in a common April 18 race after some early trouble. Fits back with a better trip and better price than last time. Super Ellie gets back to a realistic level second-off-the-claim for shrewd Mark Glatt barn. They took a bigger shot and didn’t stack up and now find more comfortable foes.

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Santa Anita - Race #5
#4 Golden River Turf is a question mark for this one, but he has a bit of pace in a race with what appears to be only one other serious forward type, and he could find a good spot up on the splits and stick around.
#2 Jerry's Spirit He's also got a touch of pace that should keep him in the frame early on with this group. Just like the top choice, turf is a question mark right now, but he seems competitive here on paper.
#1 Zeus' War He's the one with the proven turf sprint form right now, and he's probably just tactical enough to avoid getting outrun by the top pair early.
Race Summary Golden River has some midrange price appeal while moving over to the turf in a spot where he should find a great trip right up near the pace.
          Santa Anita - Race #7
#9 Musical Number Think this is a competitive race, so I'll take a midrange price shot with this one. The two-back turf run was pretty solid, and something similar might keep her in the picture today if she can get back to it on the surface switch.
#8 Lava Lucy She figures to be on the pace throughout here, but she hasn't seriously proven herself at getting past any horses, so she's likely in for a trip with at least a tiny bit of early company from a few stalls further inside.
#2 Tight Squeeze This one and the rail runner, #1 Wind Speed, both exit solid finishing scores at first asking, and either of them could land this right back.
Race Summary Musical Number seems in the mix if she's able to rebound just a bit today, and she might find a great spot just in behind a couple quicker players early.
          Santa Anita - Race #8
#8 Babe Kelso Will want to take a look at her on the tote and track ahead of this, but I wonder if she might be just quick enough to stay in the mix early in a race with a murky race shape.
#4 Petite Ange She has a touch of pace that should serve her well to find a forward spot in a race without much proven speed on paper, but she has already had her share of chances and is tough to trust at what might be a short price.
#6 Dixie Allure She showed a little bit of late interest last out and now gets some more class relief, and she isn't finding a whole lot to beat in here. One of the ones.
Race Summary Babe Kelso looks most intriguing to me of the debut runners, and I'm somewhat inclined to approach this as a race begging for a firster -- would want all three of them on the plays in a race with very little form to hang your hat on.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Pimlico - Race #2
#4 PANAMA CANAL (10-1) Has the ingredients to win long-distance turf test in debut.
#5 ABUNDANT LOVE (4-1) Finished ahead of two next-out MSW winners at Gulfstream.
#12 SOFTWARE (7-2) Unwound too late in grass sprint, barn excels with these types.
Race Summary PANAMA CANAL debuts for a barn in the midst of a 6-for-25 run with ‘first time turf’ starters. Her sire, English Channel, ranks No. 4 in North America this year in progeny turf earnings and her dam, La Extrana Dama, was 6-for-13 on the lawn and a G-I winner in Argentina. Bet to win and place and play 4-5, 4-10 and 4-12 exactas.
            Pimlico - Race #3
#10 CLASSIC JOKE (12-1) Farrior claim lacked room at key point, determined late run at winning fave.
#6 STRONSINO (5-2) First or second in last five starts, running up some big numbers for Ness.
#3 SAGRADA RAY (6-1) Can make good use of his speed off the claim at proven distance.
Race Summary CLASSIC JOKE stretched-out in distance for his third start as a 4-year-old and was hustled away from the outside post to a ground-saving position on the turf. He awaited room at the top of the stretch as the winning favorite was in full flight and closed furiously when free to finish second. He returns to the main track off the Farrior claim and is a must play at a tempting price. Bet to win and place and play a 10/3,6/ALL trifecta.
            Pimlico - Race #6
#2 TALL ORDER (6-1) Knows how to get his ‘photo’ taken, $200k turf bankroll in reach, great price.
#9 COAST ALONG (3-1) Good speed, good post to use it from, cutback to 5F should suit him well.
#3 TIDEWATER (7-2) Model of consistency averaged 82 Beyer in last five grass sprints.
Race Summary TALL ORDER rallied to win his last three turf sprints by two necks and a nose. His allowance victory last out off a three-month layoff was impressive. He steadied sharply into the turn, advanced in tandem with an outer rival to engage the leaders, surged clear in the stretch and dug in the prevail. He’s too good to pass up at 6-1 on the morning line. Bet to win and place.

                  # 5 SS ONE CHANCE FANCY 7/2
                  # 4 CHILE TRUE FIRE 9/2
                  # 10 ASC JETTAZOOM 20/1
SS ONE CHANCE FANCY has a formidable shot to take this race. Has to be worth a bet based on the sire's (Im a Fancy Pyc) offspring solid win rate - 19 percent. There is a very good chance that this entry's late pace will improve on Lasix. As of late this conditioner has produced quite good gains for wagerers with this barn's first asking entries. CHILE TRUE FIRE - Competitive edge in the sire's baby race win rate. Look for a very strong pace improvement from this animal who enters on Lasix today. Don't overlook this animal as the conditioner has produced formidable profits with 1st time starters. ASC JETTAZOOM - Camacho has been terrific with two year olds, winning at a 18 percent rate. With a +29 ROI, this rider and trainer duo has produced respectable dividends recently for players. Has some interesting handicapping angles which make this one a bet.

                    Penn National - Race #1 - Post: 5:45pm - SO - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 77

                    Rating:

                    #4 BUZZ ADAMS (ML=6/1)

BUZZ ADAMS - I think this gelding is ready to run a good one. He's had enough outings since the layoff and should be fit.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 AU SOME WARRIOR (ML=2/1), #5 GOLDEN COOKIE (ML=5/2), #6 MR. GEORGIE (ML=7/2),

AU SOME WARRIOR - Tough to back a three-year old meeting the older ones for the first time. Probably needs more racing experience. Hasn't raced or had any works since Mar 17th. Not much value on this chalk horse. When scrutinizing today's class figure, he will have to earn a better speed rating than in the last race to vie in this dirt sprint. GOLDEN COOKIE - The speed figure last time out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's race. Mark this racer as a vulnerable contender. MR. GEORGIE - The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this thoroughbred as a likely underpriced equine.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 BUZZ ADAMS to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better

                      # 1 HOLLYGROVE 20/1
                      # 6 STUNNER 4/1
FAMILY is my choice. Looks decent to be on the front end at the first call. Could best this group of animals based on the speed figure - 105 - of her last contest. Could provide positive gains based on very strong recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 99. HOLLYGROVE - Ought to be given a shot - I like the numbers from the last competition. Sound average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this equine a contender. STUNNER - Always seems to be close up at the wire. Always tough to beat Cox and Prat working together, winning 37 percent of their races.

                        Belterra Park - Race #2 - Post: 1:05pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,500 Class Rating: 52

                        Rating:

                        #1 OBI KENOBI (ML=4/1)
                        #2 GUESS AGAIN (ML=7/2)

OBI KENOBI - Barker drops him down to this class. You don't need too much more data to figure that this horse should have a chance to win at this level. This gelding notched a good speed figure of 48 in his last affair. That fig should be good enough to triumph this time. GUESS AGAIN - Always watch out for the longer priced equine when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Looking at today's class rating, this pony is up against an easier bunch than in the last race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #3 COASTLAND (ML=9/5), #5 MR. REDLEGS (ML=9/2), #4 HE IS DYNAMIC (ML=5/1),

COASTLAND - Today's contest is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a sprint event in the last couple months. Not the greatest of signs. Didn't end up on the board on May 3rd after the long layoff. Be doubtful of this animal this time out. MR. REDLEGS - Today's contest is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a sprint affair in the last couple months. Not the greatest of indicators. Awfully difficult to play this less than sharp equine when he hasn't been showing any fighting spirit lately. HE IS DYNAMIC - Never really did much at all in the last race on May 9th. Hard to wager on in today's event. Can't bet on this racer in today's sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance race recently.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 OBI KENOBI to win if we can get at least 2/1 odds
                        EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,2]
