Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 19, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 with a $2,116 carryover rolls in Race 5, and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $2.00 Late Pick starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

1-Verdun (7/5) -This is the best horse but drawing the rail doesn’t help the cause as much as it would others. That said Pat Lachance knows well and if in striking range down the lane it could be picture time.
4-Humble A (3-1)-My take is George Brennan has the lead around the first turn, if not should be no worse than 2nd. Comes off a big win in an extra distance race and could stay good for another W.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Chase H Hanover (9/5)-ANap will have the pedal down and there won’t be any mystery. The Stratton trainee is in sharp form and will be looking to play catch me if you can. The short money line, in a tough race is an issue but can post a win if catches a breather on the front end.
3-Hemsworth N (7/2)-The Bako trainee has tactical speed, can blast out or look to come off cover. My guess is Scott Zeron gets a good early seat and hopes for some hot fractions. That might happen and could catch the leader with a well timed move.
5-Dunkin (4-1)-Winner of 2 straight is at the top of its game and might offer some value. The DiDomenico trainee has made it look easy but not sure he can go gate to wire here. Can win coming off cover, and it’s been a while but knows how to string pictures together.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-The Ideal Dancer A (3-1)-Jason Bartlett takes the lines tonight and he can get maximum effort out of this veteran. Skipped a start here, and before the previous race. Is a threat if dialed on high and will assume so. Should be in the mix at the wire with an inside post draw.
4-Steet Hawk N (5/2)-Steps up after making it look easy winning from post 8. Rolled by with a .55 back half and Yannick Gingras should provide a smooth trip again. Not sure how good the NZ invader can be at Yonkers but won’t let him beat me in only its 3rd US start.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Curbside Pickup (5/2)-Made its Burke barn debut a success by easily beating the $40k claimers leaving from post 5. Faces the $50k claimers here and it could be a more difficult challenge. But knows how to dance with this kind and drawing the rail should not hurt chances of winning right back.
4-Peace Out Posse (3-1)-Gingras is on rail horse, he should get the top and Jordan Stratton will be looking to stay in contact with the leader. If they don’t walk to the half the team Stratton entry should be in striking range to tackle the leader down the lane.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    1,4/1,3,5/2,4/1,4
    Total Bet=$48

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
#2 Mom's Tribute Nothing much from her through a couple starts so far, but the barn has landed wins both times they ran a horse like this locally the last couple years. Strictly a stat play.
#3 Souper Upgrade That turf form at Laurel stacks up well with this group and should transfer OK to this new synthetic footing. Enough to like -- just probably not the price.
#6 Bloody Colors Wave The Kentucky Downs try was dull, but something like the debut run might be enough to stay in the frame with this group. One of the logical ones.
Race Summary Mom's Tribute goes for a Bradford barn that hasn't missed from two similar starters here the last couple seasons, and I'm hoping the flat form will keep the price generous.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#7 Mor Spring Spirit I don't totally trust him here, but I'm hoping the price is fair. He looks like the attacking outside speed while racing fresh here and getting back over a surface he seemed to like last season. Ready to bounce back.
#9 Osprey He has honest enough form against some tougher groups, so one of his better tries would probably be enough to land this -- race shape may be fair for him.
#11 Good Directions They tried him in Grade II company last year to end a campaign that started with an easy debut score here last July. Dropped can hit hard at what I'm guessing will be a short-ish kind of price.
Race Summary Mor Spring Spirit was solid here last year, and he has some pace while drawn outside of a few other forward players.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#1 Bohemian Style Price might be just a touch better today while meeting a couple other logical players listed below, and he might find a really nice trip while just tucked in the pocket.
#6 Runningforjoy Any of his better tries would handle this crew, but he has been a bit flat late in his recent starts, and I worry he'll take some cash on class.
#11 Shnittker He lost a couple times against allowance crews when racing at short prices here last season, and he's back off the bench on a significant class drop. The one to beat, but get a look at him.
Race Summary Bohemian Style seems like an OK fit on class and form here, and he might find a really cozy spot along the inside from the rail draw.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #1
#7 HOT MIDDLES (3-1) Projects dream trip in bid for back-to-back allowance wins as a 3-year-old.
#6 DON’T MISS OUT (9-5) Ran 1-2-3 in allowance sprints, succumbed to duel in seasonal debut.
#1 FIRST ELKTON (9-2) Lightly-raced 5yo draws difficult post off layoff, rating tactics could work.
Race Summary HOT MIDDLES can parlay her consistently good form into six figures in Horseshoe Indianapolis earnings. She rallied 4-wide to romp in an entry-level allowance off a five-month layoff and could work out a similar trip today in a speed-laden field. Bet to win and place and play 7-1 and 7-6 exactas.
        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#2 LALILY (9-2) Good try for new barn against next-out repeater, good spot to maximize her speed.
#3 FREE PASSAGE (5-2) Bid to clear lead and finished second for a higher claiming tag in latest.
#1 MISS MAKENNA (2-1) Oaklawn invader was second at top of lane but no match for rallying fave.
Race Summary LALILY got caught 4-wide after she bobbled at the break and was passed by the favorite in her first start at this level. She can use her speed well with an alert start and her winning case strengthened when the winner came back to win a $7,500/nw2 sprint at Belterra Park. Bet to win and place.
        Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #6
#9 TAP TAP TAP IT IN (6-1) Couldn’t overcome trouble or a next-out repeat winner in comeback.
#2 WOODAZ (3-1) Found Indiana-bred competition to his liking, drew away in-hand, gets in light.
#10 JUSTHAPPYTOBEHERE (7-2) Late runner hit best stride late as a 3yo, returns as gelding.
Race Summary TAP TAP TAP IT IN got Lasix for the first time but bore in at the start, raced 4-wide and lacked stretch kick in an otherwise useful start after six months away. He draws wide again but has enough speed to get into prime forward position, perhaps just off a projected lively pace. The winner came back to win another allowance by 5 lengths as the favorite. Bet to win and place and play 9-2 and 9-10 exactas.

              # 2 SPICE ICE 7/2
VILLAGE CAT is the most favorable wager in this race. Earning some nice paychecks in dirt sprint contests. Has run soundly when running a dirt sprint race. Recently Bracho has been sizzling which may give the edge to this mare. TALE OF THE LYON - Aviles will probably be able to get this mare to break out early in this contest. Is tough not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figs which have been competitive - 51 avg - of late. SPICE ICE - Has to be given a chance versus this group of horses in this race displaying respectable numbers lately and an average speed fig of 51 under similar conditions. Expect a speed boost today from this equine going off blinkers.

                Rating:

                #5 ENFORCER (ML=2/1)

ENFORCER - As long as Adorno keeps this racer off the pace, I have to believe this one could be a big winner.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #3 EDDIE W (ML=4/1), #6 FIRST MONEY (ML=9/2), #7 KEITHSENDSHELLOOOO (ML=5/1),

EDDIE W - Improbable for this thoroughbred to make an impact with no recent success in a short distance event. FIRST MONEY - The fourth place finish position in the last event was not the greatest. This gelding hasn't had any strong efforts in sprint events in the last two months. KEITHSENDSHELLOOOO - Hard to keep stabbing at this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 ENFORCER is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better

                  # 11 SHAKE IT BABY 7/2
                  # 8 SEEMS TO WHISPER 5/1
O SHAUGHESEY is the best wager in this race. Could provide positive gains based on quite good recent speed figures with an average of 69. Negron has an excellent ROI over the past month (+98) which ought to help players with this choice. Will probably go to the front end and may never look back. SHAKE IT BABY - With Batista getting the mount, watch out for this racer. Has a solid record at the distance and surface, which makes me lean toward this filly. SEEMS TO WHISPER - Should definitely be given a shot for this event if only for the very good Equibase Speed Figure earned in the last race. She has been running soundly and the speed figures are among the most respectable in this group of horses in this race.

                    Louisiana Downs - Race #1 - Post: 4:05pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $8,500 Class Rating: 63

                    Rating:

                    #1 HEAT LIGHTNING (ML=2/1)

HEAT LIGHTNING - Looking at the information on all of these horses, this is the only one to stalk. Worth a long look at this animal. This animal may have too much power on the grass for the rest of the field. Turning for home, he could put these away.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CASTLE GAP (ML=5/2), #4 CLASSIC SENSATION (ML=4/1), #7 CRUE'S N CONTROL (ML=9/2),

CASTLE GAP - 5/2 is too low of a price to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back outings. This gelding registered a speed figure in his last event which likely isn't good enough today. CLASSIC SENSATION - 51/29/21, are the dropping speed figs for this steed. CRUE'S N CONTROL - Speed ratings tell a tale of deteriorating physical condition.
