Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 5/23/25

    May 23, 2025

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
    Friday, May 23 2024
    Santa Anita Park

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 2-The Old Nine

    Backups: 1-Unbreakable Trust.

Forecast: The Old Nine just broke his maiden for $50,000 over this course and distance last time out and is realistically spotted for a repeat in this $25,000 non-winners of two affair. Numbers-wise he’s a strong fit and his good stalking style should ensure a trouble-free journey. U. Rispoli stays aboard and knows him well.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 5-Goodnight Nellie

    Backups: 1-Maniea.

Forecast: Goodnight Nellie graduated at first asking in a maiden $50,000 dirt sprint and was visually pleasing in doing so. She’s logically protected in starter’s allowance company today, lands the cozy outside post, and seems perfectly spotted for a repeat score for a high percentage outfit. On pure numbers she might have to step it up a bit but with an extra half furlong to work with the daughter of Lord Nelson should be along in time.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 4-Big Bet
    ; 2-Fast Service.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Big Bet stretches out to a mile and looks nicely spotted for a major effort in this modest $5,000 seller for older horses. He’s probably most effective around two turns and should draft into a comfortable stalking position. Fast Service, a solid runner-up in the same race our top pick just finished third in, is the one to fear most and a “must use” in rolling exotic play.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 6-Aggro
    ; 5-Wishful Winker.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Aggro and Wishful Winker are hard to separate, so we’ll include both on our top line. The former is a fast-on-figures first-off-the-claim for S. Knapp (a good 18% with the angle but off J. Mullins, so there’s no guarantees) while the latter is lightly raced with steadily improving numbers and likely capable of producing another forward move. He’s exiting three sprints and projects to be on or near the lead throughout.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 6-Favor to You
    ; 1-Prime and Ready.
    Backups: none.

Forecast: Favor to You didn’t get the best of runs when graduating over this course and distance in mid-April and with another forward move the lightly raced filly can handle the one level raise in class. Drawn nicely outside, the P. D’Amato-trained sophomore lacks tactical speed but appears to be a prototype late-running sprinter so with some help up front can tag the speed close home. Prime and Ready is a genuine and consistent sort with two prior wins over the local lawn and solid numbers for the level. She’s listed as the 8/5 morning line favorite and logically so.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 4-Far Over Loaded
    ; 1-Master Jacques.
    Backups: 3-Pax a Punch.

Forecast: Far Out Loaded has hit the board in three of his last four starts and is overdue for a win in this low level maiden $8,000 claiming affair. The barn doesn’t inspire confidence but on pure form this grinder is as good as any. Master Jacques is intriguing. He’s a first-time gelding dropping to his lowest level ever and has numbers that fit. He’s not a quick sort and the rail is a concern but a little will go a long way against this group. Tread lightly or spread deeply.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 4-Beef Winslow

    Backups: 3-Heart Headed.

Forecast: Beef Winslow has returned to good form for the high percentage M. Glatt outfit and with clear sailing today should be able to produce a winning late kick. He’s a three time winner over the local lawn with recent speed figures that make him the one to beat, so at 3-1 on the morning line he’s a win play and strong push in the various rolling exotics.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 6-Princess Del Tigre
    ; 2-Smile Baby Smile.
    Backups: 4-Dorine’s Wild Cat.

Forecast: Here’s a wide open affair that demands a bit of coverage in rolling exotic play. Princess Del Tigre made the running and then weakened late in a similar first level allowance turf miler; today on the main track we’d like to see patient tactics employed. The T. McCanna-trained mare switches to K. Kimura and should be capable of dropping over early and then being produced late. Smile Baby Smile exits a series of solid efforts at the level and should fire another good shot. First or second in seven of 16 career starts, the A. Mathis-trained daughter of Smiling Tiger is another that might be most effective if held up early.

    __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 4-Burning Rubber
    ; 5-Adebayo; 3-Brother Tony.
    Backups: 6-My Hero; 8-Bazooka Charlie.

Forecast: This messy maiden claimer offers a number of possibilities, so we suggest you spread as deeply as your budget allows. Burning Rubber has rapidly improving speed figures, and with continued improvement could spring a mild surprise in this maiden $50,000 turf miler for older horses. The Flameway colt projects to be within striking range throughout and have every chance from the quarter pole home. Adebayo just finished first in a lesser maiden claiming affair but got disqualified. Though (in a sign of confidence) he’s being raised from $20,000 to $50,000, he’s a fit on numbers and should be quite competitive despite his 12-1 morning line. This will be his second start off a layoff and his grass form from last year wasn’t half bad. Brother Tony is re-equipped with blinkers and is a first time gelding while dropping from straight maiden company, so there are several reasons to expect improvement. He's been a money burner and certainly not one to trust but against this group he’s a solid contender.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

      May 23, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

2-Dire Straits (3/2)-Winner in 2 of the last 4 and took a picture last time in its Yonkers season debut. Jason Bartlett gets the nod, steps up and should get a cozy trip.
6-Vinny De Vie (8-1)-Tried to go gate to wire at Tioga and finished 2nd in last. The race before cashed a 2nd place check in a race at YR. Scott Zeron steers and should be headed to the top. Could be tough to tackle with a soft quarter. If the chalk wants the top, a pocket trip could work well also.

      Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Promiseland A (5-1)-Might offer some value and should be a player with an inside post draw. Does well racing near the top of the stack and Bartlett should be seeking that type of trip as soon as the wings fold.
7-Walkin On Sunshine (3-1)-Put in sharp effort to down the Invites last time. Used a 54.3 back half to roll by down the lane. The post draw helps the price and makes it a challenge. But best not to overlook the chances of another trip to the winner's circle.

      Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

7-Kiss My Cheek (4-1)-Went gate to wire at 2/5 in last and will take a swing that same plan can work here. Steps up, draws outside so could offer some value. Team Stratton entry looks for its 3rd straight picture, and if lands in a good early seat that could happen.

      Race 10 9:45 PM EDT)

1-Kat (3/2)-Recent form has been dull but has won 3 of 10 at YR and drops to a soft spot. Austin Siegelman should be racing at the top of the stack throughout. This is wake-up time and can win off that type of trip.
7-Chillin Bythe Pool (10-1)-This 6-year-old has some gate speed but picks its spots. Drops and this feels like an opportunity to blast out and get a close-up seat. Could be a player with an aggressive steer from Brent Holland and should offer a solid price.

      $2.00 Late Pick 4

      2,6/2,7/7/1,7
      Total Bet=$16

Churchill Downs Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, May 23

        May 23, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

        CHURCHILL DOWNS LATE PICK 4
        Friday, May 23, 2025

The Late Pick 4 pool at Churchill Downs last Friday exceeded $87,000. With 38 entries, four different trainers and jockeys won races. It could be more of the same this Friday, May 23, with large, competitive fields that shape up this way:

CD 6th race (3:18 p.m. EST) -- They’re coming from all parts of the country for this $127,000 entry-level allowance at one mile. SHOPPER’S REVENGE returns to his preferred surface and just missed a wire-to-wire victory in the same spot at Churchill Downs a year ago. TOUR PLAYER, an easy maiden winner here in the fall, returns to the barn of trainer Bob Baffert off a strong workout tab. MAP TO THE STARS is a consistent mid-80 Beyer type but goes beyond 7F for the first time. PALM TREE posted the top speed figure of his career to win off the claim, then just missed in a repeat try as the favorite. GAMBLERS TAIL seeks his third winning rally in a row. SHOW OF FORCE dueled a long way in a Grade III turf stakes at this distance, but must show more on the main track as he gets Lasix for his seasonal debut. Go deep in the opening leg.

CD 7th race (3:50 p.m. EST) -- With plenty of speed to the inside and out in this $80,000 optional claiming race, I’ll go with three runners likely to come from off the pace and enhance their $364,780 combined 6F bankroll. CAT ON TIME overcame troubled breaks and roared home for back-to-back victories in his first two sprint attempts since the first two starts of his career. He passed by TWO EAGLES RIVERS, who came back to win a $50,000 claimer and remains a threat off the claim despite an 0-for-10 record in 2X allowance company. ATTACHE is a model of consistency and a low-90 Beyer type at Churchill Downs, where he stands 4-for-8 with nearly a quarter million in earnings. He can also rate but was locked in a front-end duel last out at Oaklawn Park, where he finished between a trio of late runners in second.

CD 8th race (4:22 p.m. EST) -- CROWN IMPERIAL and BLING were separated by 1-1/4 lengths when they finished behind repeat Grade III winner Queen Maximus (6-9, $448k) in the Unbridled Sidney Stakes on Kentucky Oaks Day. CROWN IMPERIAL ‘fought on under a long drive’ to finish second, earning top billing today. The ever-improving PAYNT YA LATER sprung a 13-1 allowance upset in her first turf test, holding off a trio of deep closers. She’s versatile enough to track from just off the pace and good enough to use on the ticket at a good price again.

CD 9th race (4:55 p.m. EST) -- METATRON’S MUSE takes a confident class hike after he ran away from the favorite to win in a one-mile race locally that produced 0-for-6 follow-ups. WINSTON WOLF was at his best at Churchill Downs as a 4-year-old last fall. He starts fresh off the claim with a pair of encouraging breezes. FIRST STRIKE’S 3-wide rally was disrupted when the winner came across and forced him to steady in his lone start on conventional dirt at Churchill Downs last fall. He hit his best stride with an easy win and a near miss from post 12 at Turfway Park, now returns to Churchill for his cheapest claiming tag. CAROLO RAPIDO seeks a repeat victory for trainer Eddie Kennealy, who won races at Keeneland, Fair Grounds, Hawthorne and Turfway Park from the last 14 horses he claimed.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        CD 6th Race: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9
        CD 7th Race: 5, 6, 8
        CD 8th Race: 2, 6
        CD 9th Race: 2, 3, 4, 6
        Cost: $84

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Santa Anita - Race #5
#4 Preem She feels like a bit of a reach, but she has never tried this kind of trip and brings some tactical turnback pace that can occasionally prove effective going short. Let's see.
#6 Favor to You Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here, but a bit worried that the price will be shorter than it realistically should be. Great draw to tuck in just behind for a tracking trip.
#1 Prime and Ready Interested to see how this one gets played compared to the one drawn outside -- but she should get a really great trip while right up close throughout from the fence. Could be convinced.
Race Summary Preem has some appeal at what should be a solid price, and I'm hoping she'll finish with a bit of punch while cutting back.
          Santa Anita - Race #8
#4 Dorine's Wild Cat Honest finisher fits well enough here, and the price should still be OK despite a couple of tough names in the recent running lines. Lots to like, I think?
#3 Raising Silver Not totally enthused here, but I think her better stuff keeps her in the frame with these. Shares with anything a bit better than that last one.
#6 Princes Del Tigre She meets a couple other forward players, but she has some speed and a pretty high ceiling -- wouldn't be surprising to see her drill these.
Race Summary Dorine's Wild Cat could come alive late at an OK price, and I will take her reliable form over a handful of other questions I have for the rest of them.
          Santa Anita - Race #9
#5 Adebayo He's back up in class while moving over to the turf again, and he was competitive enough at this kind of level in the past to think the rise won't be a huge deal breaker. You can follow me to the ATM if he's offering that 12/1 ML near post time.
#6 My Hero Suppose he's a player in here, but I don't love how he gives away ground late in his races, and I'm not excited about a potentially short price.
#8 Bazooka Charlie He could offer something better here with that experience under his belt, as he seemed to do some learning along the way in that even run. Expecting better.
Race Summary Adebayo was in the frame with similar in a handful of the higher-priced starts, so I'm not too worried about the rise off that cheaper try -- especially for turf.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Churchill Downs - Race #1
#3 CAROLINA CANDY (5-1) Gets pace to run at again, good value play in long sprint debut.
#5 BOLT ON THE ROCKS (2-1) Drew off on lead into the stretch, faces more pressure in here.
#7 ROSE ALABAMA (12-1) Steady work tab for seasonal debut, starts outside for the first time.
Race Summary CAROLINA CANDY stalked 4-wide, gained a short lead turning for home and finished third two starts back in the same spot at 6F. She rallied into torrid fractions last out but couldn’t stay with the runaway winner. She should get another dream setup in her first long sprint attempt. Bet to win and place and play 3-5 and 3-7 exactas.
            Churchill Downs - Race #2
#4 CAPTAIN GABE (2-1) Second to debut fave, experience could pay off against several firsters today.
#7 BAYTOWN DREAMER (9-2) Raced 4-wide, caught the 1-to-5 fave for third, added ground a plus.
#8 SPICE RUNNER (5-2) Debuts for Asmussen; dam was multiple stakes-placed sprinter, albeit on turf.
Race Summary CAPTAIN GABE bid 3-wide into the lane but was out-dueled by the 6-to-5 first-time starter in the final eighth of a strong debut. He breezed faster than 100 others in a 4F morning workout since then. Bet to win and place and play a 4-7/4,7,8/ALL trifecta.
            Churchill Downs - Race #5
#5 FRIAR LAURENCE (5-2) Two wins at CD, good fit for $50k, met several $400k-plus earners recently.
#6 HAPPY AMERICAN (3-1) Chased Grade III three-peat winner two back, was ‘going well at the end.’
#3 CHRINGO (2-1) Finished ahead of ‘Friar’ but behind a pair of quality rivals in shorter sprint.
Race Summary Morning-line favorites CHRINGO and FRIAR LAURENCE finished a half-length apart, behind the top two finishers who are a combined 14-for-61 with more than $1 million in earnings. FRIAR LAWRENCE has more long sprint experience and he last won at Churchill Downs, so make a win and place bet on him in the rematch.

                  # 5 GOODNIGHT NELLIE 8/5
                  # 3 NANCI GRIFFITH 3/2
                  # 1 MANIAE 5/2
GOODNIGHT NELLIE could be the bet in here. Mathis has this filly running well and is a very strong selection based on the solid Speed Figures earned in sprint races recently. Should wake up with Lasix change (with second time Lasix) today. Must be given a chance - I like the numbers from the last outing. NANCI GRIFFITH - She has been travelling soundly lately while recording solid Speed Figures. Trainer boasts strong win figs at this distance and surface. MANIAE - Is a strong contender based on numbers put up as of late under today's conditions. This animal has a terrific win percent in dirt sprints.

                    # 4 A TWISTED COWGIRL 20/1
WHERE IS QUEEN B looks to be a strong contender. With a reliable 72 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's outing. Wagerers should note that this equine runs with second time Lasix today. Ought to be given a shot - I like the figures from the last contest. ITS A GOOD VALENTINE - Has to be considered based on the solid speed rating put up in the last affair. Bettors ought to take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. A TWISTED COWGIRL - She has been running admirably and the speed figs are among the best in this field. With a nice class fig average of 85, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this group.

                      Gulfstream Park - Race #3 - Post: 1:54pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $26,500 Class Rating: 62

                      Rating:

                      #3 SPLASH DIVE (ML=5/2)
                      #6 I LOVE IRELAND (ML=20/1)

SPLASH DIVE - The 58 last race speed figure looks mighty good on paper. I LOVE IRELAND - Bacallao Vega has this mare signed up for the right contest.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #7 NVDIA (ML=9/5), #2 ROYAL PRADO (ML=2/1),

NVDIA - You think this horse is going to be victorious just because she's always close. Just doesn't get the job done often. Multiple tries for this vulnerable equine at Gulfstream Park and still hasn't received her first victory here. ROYAL PRADO - Registered a most unsatisfactory speed rating in the last race in a $12,500 Maiden Claiming race on April 24th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that fig.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 SPLASH DIVE is going to be the play if we are getting 3/2 or better

                        Charles Town - Race #2 - Post: 7:32pm - Maiden Special - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $27,800 Class Rating: 68

                        Rating:

                        #7 I'M A COOL QUEEN (ML=9/5)

I'M A COOL QUEEN - Filly had the second fastest workout of the day prepping for this. We have lots of early speed with this thoroughbred. She could wire this field. Have to give this filly a chance. Ran a good contest last time around the track within the last thirty days. This filly notched a good rating of 67 in her last clash. That rating should be high enough to score today.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #1 REMY'S TOP GUN (ML=3/1), #5 MARILYN MOONROE (ML=7/2), #3 OUR MEMORIES (ML=6/1),

REMY'S TOP GUN - If she goes off near the M/L odds of 3/1, I'll have to pass. MARILYN MOONROE - 7/2 is just too low of a reward to take on most any animal that has run poorly in back to back races. Improbable for this less than sharp equine to do much this time around. The extended rest time is a troublesome sign. Mediocre speed rating in the last race at Charles Town at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't feel this horse will improve too much in today's race. OUR MEMORIES - 6/1 is just not enough of a price to take on this participant.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - I'M A COOL QUEEN - Playing the top earnings per start racer is an angle which won't steer you wrong in the long run. I'm betting on this one.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #7 I'M A COOL QUEEN to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though
