    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Hawthorne - Race #5
#11 Foxxy Cleopatra Think she's going to hit hard while going second off the layoff and getting back to the grass. She ran a good one off the bench and should force the issue the whole way. The one to beat.
#3 Wanda Strong She has finished up well enough in some of those races in the past to think her cutback pace could play well with this crew. Think her baseline better stuff would keep her in the frame with the top choice.
#1 Ghaaleb's City She'll try the turf today with pretty honest form up and down the page, and she might work out an OK trip letting everything unfold in front of her while saving ground. Not impossible.
Race Summary Foxxy Cleopatra is back quickly after her layoff run last out, and she draws well to prompt the pace from the start.
    Hawthorne - Race #7
#6 Regained Power Not sure how excited you're supposed to be about the logical players in here, but this guy might be good for a thrill. His sprint pace should give him the front end, and that could lead to some discouraged chasers failing to make serious runs. Maybe.
#3 Remember the Affair Wouldn't be against taking an aggressive two-deep stand with these two midrange price players -- this one might be worth another look on the turf after a mild effort last out. Cozy spot for him if he has anything to offer.
#5 Even the Wind His better stuff makes him a main threat, and backers can point to a big run fresh last season. In the mix.
Race Summary Regained Power and Remember the Affair both have some appeal in a spot I don't love, but 'Power should be on a one-way send mission in hopes of simply running these off.
    Hawthorne - Race #8
#2 Dapper Dude Honest finisher ran a good one at 43/1 last out, and something similar would make him a handful with this crew at what may still be an OK price.
#5 Shady McGee He should be happy to not find Temper Tantrum in this spot today after chasing that one home in a couple recent tries, but I worry he's going to become a default kind of choice today.
#9 Wicked Surprise Forward player should be in a good spot turning for home, but I think he could be vulnerable to getting outkicked.
Race Summary Dapper Dude fits with some reliable recent form, and he has some finishing ability to that may help him get past a couple of more tactical types late.

      #3
      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Delaware Park - Race #1
#1 LIVING WATER (8-5) Should be long gone with a duplicate of latest, today’s Best Bet.
#3 MIDNIGHT GETAWAY (6-1) Rallied for third behind repeater in improved second start off layoff.
#5 NOTION TO TAPIT (10-1) Poor record, needs some pace flow, sheds 10 pounds on class drop.
Race Summary LIVING WATER Dueled and ‘dug in’ but settled for third in a similar spot at Penn National. The odds-on winner came back to win again in a romp. He is eligible for this spot by eight days, can maximize his speed from the rail and moves up on an off track. Bet to win and place and play 1-3 and 1-5 exactas.
      Delaware Park - Race #2
#7 GO ALICE GO (5-1) Right set-up, right price, shorter sprint distance should suit her well.
#4 DEVLISH GAL (4-5) Blew three stretch leads versus homebreds at Oaklawn, worked bullet locally.
#6 MATCH FIVE (7-2) Gets needed break from MSW company, just missed in lone try at this level.
Race Summary GO ALICE GO blew a clear stretch lead at 6-1/2F, then was unable to sustain a rally behind the 6-to-5 winner at 7F in a pair of improved efforts at Parx. The cutback to 6F and likely solid pace flow in front of her, make her worth a win and place bet. Also play a 4-7 exacta box.
      Delaware Park - Race #4
#2 PRIME MOTIVE (2-1) Plays catch-me-if-you-can in first long-distance try and second start with Lasix.
#4 AMAZING BERNIE (7-5) Landed minor awards in pair of six-horse routes out of town for higher tags.
#6 CARRY GRANT (5-1) Rallied into pair of ‘photos’ at one mile recently, needs alert start.
Race Summary PRIME MOTIVE raced evenly in a higher-tagged sprint to begin his 3-year-old season. The son of multiple Grade I-winning router Brody’s Cause goes long for the first time and could take some catching if he adapts. Bet to win and place and play 2-4 and 2-6 exactas.

            Race 2 - Claiming - 7.5f on the Turf. Purse: $19000 Class Rating: 76

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 121 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $20,000, FOR EACH $2,500 TO $15,000 2 LBS.
            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 3 STAR ANISE 5/2
            # 5 QUIET MELODY 12/1
            # 9 CHARLUCHE 10/1
STAR ANISE is my choice. Could beat this field given the 75 Equibase Speed Figure garnered in her last outing. Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this horse look very strong in this contest. This animal has a very good winning percentage in turf sprints. QUIET MELODY - She looks decent in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint.

              Charles Town - Race #8 - Post: 10:17pm - Maiden Claiming - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,700 Class Rating: 42

              Rating:

              #4 AIM TO PLEASE (ML=5/2)
              #6 RUNAWAY GOLD (ML=9/2)

AIM TO PLEASE - Maldonado rode this horse for the initial time in the last race and comes right back this race. Another way to assign class is earnings per start. This horse has the highest in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish. The 42 most recent race speed figure looks sound on paper. RUNAWAY GOLD - I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. Sub-par try last time out at Charles Town was due to the off-going (she finished eighth). Will do better in this event with the benefit of a fast track.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #10 SING ME TO SLEEP (ML=3/1), #9 TINA'S BACK (ML=4/1),

SING ME TO SLEEP - This horse just hasn't looked ready of late. I find it hard to bet on any racer in a sprint race at 3/1 when she hasn't shown any on the board results in sprints in the last two months. TINA'S BACK - This entrant has no victories at Charles Town. Tough for this closer horse to get up today. Without a hot pace to stir things up, the lone front speed is going to make it awfully hard to get the job done. Will be tough for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - AIM TO PLEASE - I'm making a wager on this one today. An easier spot is going to make a big difference. Will be strong today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #4 AIM TO PLEASE to win. Have to have odds of at least 2/1 or better though

                Thistledown - Race #3 - Post: 1:50pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,400 Class Rating: 54

                Rating:

                #2 GRAY TORMENTOR (ML=9/2)
                #5 WEEKEND RETREAT (ML=2/1)

GRAY TORMENTOR - I like to bet on this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a strong race within the last thirty days. Took a significant drop in class rating in the last race at Thistledown. Returning to a similar class level in today's race. Should do well today. WEEKEND RETREAT - This jockey and handler's equines have been generating a positive return on investment. That last contest must not have been too hard on this gelding for him to be able to race again so quickly. He has the highest earnings per race. Take a good look at this one. Have to make this gelding a contender; he comes off a sharp contest on May 19th.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #4 PAYMASTER GENERAL (ML=5/2), #6 NATIONAL STORY (ML=3/1), #1 COLORFUL LAD (ML=6/1),

PAYMASTER GENERAL - Don't feel this less than sharp equine will do much running in today's event. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class rating. NATIONAL STORY - Ran his best speed fig last time out, but the 'off conditions' may have had something to do with it. May bounce off of that last extreme effort. COLORFUL LAD - Could be tough for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put him on the likely underpriced contenders list. I don't think this less than sharp equine likes running on the inside, certainly not out of the number one post.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 GRAY TORMENTOR on the win end if we get at least 2/1 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,5]
                TRIFECTA WAGERS: None

Race 2 - Maiden Claiming - 330y on the Dirt. Purse: $17500 Class Rating: 64

QUARTER HORSE 330Y, FOR ACCREDITED LA BRED MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 126 LBS.; OLDER, 128 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $20,000.
                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 BILLIES RUNNIN GOLD 2/1
                  # 3 OUR GRATEFUL HEART 3/1
                  # 4 AMTRACK 4/1
BILLIES RUNNIN GOLD has a decent shot to take this race. I think having Garcia ride this filly is a smart move. Appears to have a competitive class edge based on the most recent company kept. Has put up solid Equibase Speed Figures in short races in the past. OUR GRATEFUL HEART - He should have a strong outing versus this softer lot. Must be carefully examined here on the basis of the figs in the speed department alone. AMTRACK - Looks very good against this group and should be one of the early speedsters. The Equibase Speed Figure of 51 from his last affair looks strong in here.
