Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    May 30, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card to begin the weekend. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

1-Chiapanecas (2-1)-Finally connected for a win in a quick mile after coming close in recent starts. Went gate to wire last week and now moves in a few spots. Faces 4 foes from the last field and is a strong double up possibility.
6-Easy To Please (6-1)-Won 2 back, then bumped up to face this kind and was stuck with post 7. Did pace the back half in 55.4 and should be closer to the leader turning for the wire this time. Best to respect at this price, Jordan Stratton has gate speed to use.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Kasha V (4-1)-Lost by a head in last in the first start without using Lasix. Doesn't have big gate speed but Jim Marohn should be able to work a smooth trip. Drops, and looks like a main player versus this kind.
5-PC Free Wheeling (3-1)-Beaten odds-on chalk was hung the mile in last and now gets needed class relief. Stratton may look to land on the point and make every call a winning one.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

5-Front Page Story (8-1)-Price shot raced against the Invites in the last 2 starts. Came 2nd from this post 2 back and lost to the program chalk 8-Walkin On Sunshine last time. Tonight, Pat Lachance has a post edge and was pace compromised in last.
6-Promiseland A (6-1)-Tried to go gate to wire in last and that trip fell short. Did work to get the top and that type of trip is not typical for this mare. Jason Bartlett sticks, will look for a stalking trip and the price is right to use.

    Race 9

1-Immigrant Am S (3-1)-Has only 1 win in 7 races this year but has shown some improvement in the last 2 starts. Bartlett does the steering for Engblom and should get a cozy trip. Will respect chances of taking the 1st picture on the Hilltop.
6-Cactustotheclouds (6-1)-Likes to get on the engine and play catch me if you can. That plan worked 2 back and Brent Holland will be out and rolling again. Could get the top when the wings fold but should be no worse than in the pocket. Will take a swing there will be enough gas left for the stretch drive.

    $2.00 Late Pick 4

    1,6/1,5/5,6/1,6
    Total Bet=$32

Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Knoe - Santa Anita - 5/30/25

      May 30, 2025

Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know”
      Friday, May 30 2024
      Santa Anita Park

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+
      Main Ticket: 6-Queen Bay

      Backups: 5-Copper Luna.

Forecast: Queen Bay, from the first crop of the brilliant Charlatan, breezed a furlong in :10 flat at the OBS March sale and looked terrific doing it, after which she brought $350,000 through the ring. She’s definitely acts like a win-early type and from her cozy outside draw should be capable of dominating from gate to wire. The S. Callaghan-trained juvenile is listed at 2-1 on the morning line but we suspect she’ll go quite a bit lower.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: B
      Main Ticket: 2-Auditory.

      Backups: 4-Rose of Jericho.

Forecast: Auditory crushed an outclassed $5,000 claiming field by more than seven lengths earlier this month, was promptly claimed, and is wheeled back by her new connections protected in this starter’s allowance dash for fillies and mares. Based strictly on speed figures the A. Harris-trained filly looks very much like a repeat winner.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 3: Post: 1:59 PT Grade: B
      Main Ticket: 2-Baldoro
      ; 1-Kawazaki (Ire).
      Backups: 3-Smooth Salute.

Forecast: Baldoro, just missed at this level in his first start since being claimed by L. Powell and a similar performance today should be good enough for a win. In the frame in nine of 11 career starts over the local lawn, this thoroughly genuine and consistent gelding is drawn nicely inside and can be tough on the front end or from a stalking position. In a five runner affair, the veteran gelding looks like the logical top pick. Kawazaki (Ire), a beaten choice in the same race our top pick exits, is another consistent sort who projects to have every chance from his favorable rail draw. His best puts him right there.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 4: Post: 2:29 PT Grade: C+
      Main Ticket: 2-Charmed Dream
      ; 1-Cooling Off.
      Backups: 5-Oscar Night.

Forecast: Charmed Dream, second in her last pair, is overdue for a win and may have found a field she can outrun in this low level maiden $12,500 claimer. This shortened trip of five and one half furlongs will be appreciated. Cooling Off got no play in her debut (35-1) but didn’t run badly after a slow start, closing some ground with interest but much too late. She adds Lasix today and seems likely to produce a forward move but needs to leave cleanly from the rail.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 5: Post: 2:59 PT Grade: B+
      Main Ticket: 5-La Ville Lumiere
      ; 6-Cara Rose.
      Backups: none.

Forecast: La Ville Lumiere ran a winning race in her debut but settled for second in a fast affair while well clear of the rest. She switches to grass today – the surface change shouldn’t be a problem – and appears ready to graduate at what surely will be a very short price. Cara Rose might be worth using on a ticket or two. A closing second in her debut, she has a right to step forward with that bit of experience behind her and her pedigree suggests she should be much more comfortable on grass. Numbers-wise, though, she has considerable ground to make up.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 6: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B-
      Main Ticket: 8-Pratchett
      ; 6-Cupid’s Crusader.
      Backups: none.

Forecast: Pratchett lands the cozy outside draw and projects to enjoy a soft pace stalking/pressing trip outside. His numbers are fast enough to win at this level and after a couple of months off should be primed to produce another forward move. Cupid’s Crusader is a one-paced grinder and may lack a winning punch, though he does have a few races in his chart that make him dangerous. We’ll include him on a few tickets while preferring Pratchett on top.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 7: Post: 4:00 PT Grade: B-
      Main Ticket: 3-Zombo Bombo
      ; 4-Magic Account.
      Backups: 9-Havoc.

Forecast: Zombo Bombo won from a lesser field in game style earlier this month and did so with a strong, vastly improved speed figure. If he doesn’t go backwards today, the son of Munnings can handle this one level step up in class. Magic Account is a solid fit on numbers and shows a healthy wok tab for his first start since February. He could easily be a better type off the bench.

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 8: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B
      Main Ticket: 6-Margarita Girl
      ; 7-Sugar Hi.
      Backups: 4-Wishtheyallcouldbe.

Forecast: Margarita Girl is a maiden who didn’t live up to expectations in a pair of outings last fall as a 2-year-old. She returns in an allowance race – not by choice but simply because she can’t get a maiden race to fill – and if she runs to her ability she can win despite being above her conditions. Sugar Hi won her debut at Saratoga back in 2023 but then went south. She has trained like she’s fit and ready for new trainer P. D’Amato so it wouldn’t be a surprise if she regains her best from for this red hot outfit. At 8-1 on the morning line, she’s a “must use.”

      __________________________________________________ ________
Santa Anita Race 9: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B
      Main Ticket: 1-Sexzie
      ; 7-Inner Fury (Ire).
Backups: 4-Ready to Dare; 9-Nakota (Ire).

Forecast: Let’s try a gamble with Sexzie in this maiden $50,000 turf miler for older fillies and mares. With the classic two-sprints-and-a-stretch out pattern, the M. Glatt-trained daughter of McKinzie certainly can be the controlling speed from the rail if they want her to be, and if she can shake looks early without undue pressure she can take this field a very long way. She is listed at 6-1 on the morning line and is quite intriguing at that number. Inner Fury may be the most dangerous of the closers. She switches to A. Fresu, who may decide to take her back early and then produce one late kick.

Santa Anita Pick 3 Analysis | Friday, May 30

        May 30, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

        SANTA ANITA LATE PICK 3
        Friday, May 30, 2025

With plenty of rain in the forecast, Penn National canceled its turf stakes action for Friday, two days ahead of time. Most tracks east of the Mississippi will likely have to deal with Mother Nature this weekend. So, let's head west and take a shot at the Santa Anita Pick 3, with good-sized fields that could remain intact under sunny skies and temperature in the 80s.

SA 7th race (4:00 p.m. EST) -- MAGIC ACCOUNT disappeared in the same spot when last seen three months ago, but he finished 1-2 in his prior five sprints at Santa Anita with an average 76 Beyer speed figure. He finished second to a pair of odds-on winners, including Mega Moon, who ran second in a $32,000 optional claimer Monday with an 89 Beyer. His work tab indicates readiness at a decent price. NAVY MAN swung 4-wide on the turn and ‘improved’ while posing no serious threat to a pair of next-out winners that included Jerry’s Spirit, who averaged an 85 Beyer in three consecutive victories. Trainer Steve Knapp is on fire of late, so use NAVY MAN on the ticket.

SA 8th race (4:30 p.m. EST) -- SHINING STAR won her first four races in Chile, three as the favorite, two in stake company and all in double-digit sized fields. She was well-beaten in a Grade I stakes, now arrives in California for the same owner. She’s in the capable hands of trainer John Sadler, who stands 18-for-90 since April 18 and 32/9-6-5 with new acquisitions in the last 25 months with an average $13.60 win mutuel. MARGARITA GIRL survived a front-end duel on the turn as the 3-to-5 favorite in her debut last fall but couldn’t contain 5-to-2 firster Non Compliant, who came back to win the Grade II Oak Leaf going a route of ground. She led into the stretch despite a troubled start in a follow-up turf sprint, now returns to the main track with Lasix for her seasonal debut. SUGAR HI romped as a debut favorite at Saratoga last fall but was well-beaten in four subsequent starts. She met three eventual $250k earners in her first start and has a solid work tab for her seasonal debut in a new barn. She is an inviting price at 8-1 on the morning line.

SA 9th race (5:00 p.m. EST) -- TAVOLARA, keen to go early, dueled with INNER FURY to the quarter pole at 1-1/8 miles before the trip-sitting winner and deep-closing runner-up NAKOTA passed by both. TAVOLARA is a live longshot on the cutback to one mile with the addition of blinkers. INNER FURY adapted well to front-end tactics and held third, also earning a spot on the Pick 3 ticket. READY TO DARE gained late on the 3-to-5 winner three back at 6F, finished well two back at 6-1/2F after she lost valuable momentum into the far turn and should get plenty of pace to rally into in her second one-mile go-round.

        Suggested $3 Ticket
        SA 7th Race: 4, 5
        SA 8th Race: 3, 6, 7
        SA 9th Race: 4, 7, 8
        Cost: $54

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Santa Anita - Race #1
#3 Baby Needs Shoes Get a look at all of these youngsters on the track ahead of this, but I think this one might be ready to go with an appealing turf sprint pedigree.
#2 Can You Dream Not a whole lot from her in the debut, but she has that experience edge here and may have some upside on the move to the turf.
#1 Two Mountains Wonder if this one might be able to outrun her odds out of the box, but the rail draw could make things tricky.
Race Summary Fun turf sprint for the 2-year-olds, so take a look at all of them ahead of this. Baby Needs Shoes looks like the right place to start.
          Santa Anita - Race #5
#6 Cara Rose Think this race definitely came up as the tougher split compared to the opener, and this one gets the slight edge while moving to turf after finishing up with a lot of energy at first asking. Should be closer today.
#5 La Ville Lumiere She's the one to beat with a good debut under her belt, and she flashed speed that day that should give her a big jump on the top choice. Dangerous.
#2 Got the Ring Check her out in the paddock, but she's a fresh face landing in a tougher spot than if she went in the opener. Could be good enough to play with the top pair.
Race Summary Cara Rose and La Ville Lumiere bring solid debut efforts with them, but I'm hoping 'Rose will be a bit better price today with a less tactical trip waiting for her.
          Santa Anita - Race #9
#1 Sexzie Stretchout pace is only meeting some turf route speed further outside, so the front end is probably in play from the fence today. Would want a midrange price after a couple dull runs so far, but maybe the route run wakes her up.
#7 Inner Fury She's probably supposed to be tough here after a good run with similar last time out, and she has enough tactical speed to sit close early again here. Makes sense, but I'm just not that excited.
#4 Ready to Dare Maybe the move back around two turns will help her find something better, but her baseline stuff seems competitive with these for a piece.
Race Summary Sexzie can probably have a run for it from the fence, and there isn't a whole lot of depth in this spot if she's able to shake free at any point.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Santa Anita - Race #2
#3 CHOLLIMA (4-1) Winless long time, kept good company at SA this year, could break through today.
#2 AUDITORY (2-1) Ran away from five rivals who are a combined 5-for-74, but looked good doing it.
#1 HONORABLE GAL (3-1) Has speed and rail but won from off the pace in lone win on dirt.
Race Summary CHOLLIMA rallied 4-wide after a slow start to finish third in a shorter sprint at Los Alamitos. In her previous five starts at Santa Anita this year, she met next-out winners each time, three at the $8,000 claiming level and three with mid-60 Beyers. Bet to win and place and play a 2,3/1,2/7 Pick 3.
            Santa Anita - Race #3
#1 KAWAZAKI (8-5) Bumped into rail in deep stretch, probably costing him win as the favorite.
#2 BALDORO (2-1) Got the jump on Kawazaki at top of stretch, ran second, holds a tactical edge again.
#5 AMERICAN EMPIRE (12-1) Steady route numbers, needs some pace flow to be a factor.
Race Summary KAWAZAKI followed BALDORO on the inside until BALDORO swung 3-wide outside the longshot leaders and KAWAZAKI tried to split rivals in early stretch. KAWAZAKI hit the rail in the final sixteenth, losing all chance in what would have been a close finish. He gets the nod in the rematch with an eighth of a mile more to cover.
            Santa Anita - Race #4
#7 FIRECRACKER MOLLY (10-1) Takes magnified class drop in second start, worth a longshot stab.
#2 CHARMED DREAM (8-5) Second from on the pace two back and off the pace from post 10 in latest.
#5 OSCAR NIGHT (9-2) Need not be much; trainer is 2-9 in last year with maiden claiming firsters.
Race Summary FIRECRACKER MOLLY kept a busy 5F work tab but trailed throughout in her debut for $50,000. The top two finishers class dropped from the MSW ranks and the half-mile split in the 6-1/2F race was faster than a same-day starter allowance and MSW sprint at 5-1/2F. Bet to win and place and play 7-2, 7-4 and 7-5 exactas.

                  Race 6 - Claiming - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $12700 Class Rating: 77

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE IN 2025. THREE YEAR OLDS, 126 LBS.; OLDER, 128 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $4,000.
                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 SHE'S RESILIENT 8/1
                  # 3 ADIOS MUCHACHAS 3/1
                  # 6 BOHEMIAN JIGGLES 10/1
SHE'S RESILIENT is my pick and could score at a price in here. Has been running soundly and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Valenzuela will probably have this mare in excellent position to win the affair. Garnered a decent speed rating last time out. ADIOS MUCHACHAS - Aguilar should be able to get this filly to break out sharply in this race. Could best this field based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 74 - of her last contest. BOHEMIAN JIGGLES - Has run soundly when moving a dirt sprint race.

                    # 1 YOU JUST GOT MOONED 3/1
                    # 8 MI BELLA REINA 6/1
                    # 3 MW B CAUSE IM SEXY 7/2
YOU JUST GOT MOONED is my choice. Overall the speed figures of this pony look strong in this competition. Rodriguez has one of the most favorable winning percentages in this group of horses with entries running at this distance and surface. Change in Lasix (with second time Lasix) may be the key to a return to the races. MI BELLA REINA - Ran a sharp last race. The average class figure alone makes this one a contender. MW B CAUSE IM SEXY - Has respectable Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager for this event. This pony enters today's race on Lasix.

                      Santa Anita - Race #9 - Post: 5:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $33,000 Class Rating: 83

                      Rating:

                      #8 TAVOLARA (ML=8/1)
                      #9 NAKOTA (IRE) (ML=3/1)
                      #7 INNER FURY (IRE) (ML=5/2)

TAVOLARA - Trainer Gaines gave this filly a good stiff workout. Last one was 2nd fastest of the day. Have to give this horse a long hard look. In recent races, has posted the best speed figs on the turf at this distance. 'Blinkers On' is a time-honored positive angle in handicapping the races. This magnificent animal has a lot of class. A good sign in a race on the grass like we have today. NAKOTA (IRE) - Last time out on the sod, this horse was solid. Anything close right here, and this one should win. This pony coming off a good effort in the last 30 days is a serious competitor in my opinion. This horse already beat the chalk horse last time out at Santa Anita. This filly's last speed rating is high enough to score here, I'll wager on her back again this time out. INNER FURY (IRE) - I like to play this handicapping theory, a thoroughbred coming back off a solid effort within the last month. I cannot ignore the fact that this filly is working extremely well.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #4 READY TO DARE (ML=9/2), #1 SEXZIE (ML=6/1), #5 LADY LOLLIPOP (ML=8/1),

SEXZIE - Tough to play any horse to turn things around if there is no wager value to taking the chance. This filly garnered a fig in her last affair which likely isn't good enough today.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #8 TAVOLARA is the play if we get odds of 7/2 or better
                      EXACTA WAGERS: Box [8,9]

                        Century Mile - Race #4 - Post: 7:45pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 67

                        Rating:

                        #4 BAKFIRE BABY (ML=9/5)

BAKFIRE BABY - Gonzalez comes to race after getting to know the mare in the last event. Sophisticated selectors will tell you that this animal has strong pace. Have to make this mare a contender; she comes off a nice race on May 9th.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #2 OUT FRONT (ML=5/2), #7 GO MAMA (ML=3/1), #3 EYESPYMYLITTLEEYE (ML=4/1),

OUT FRONT - On a downward sequence. Speed figures keep decreasing. Unlikely that this horse will finish better than she did last time when ending up third. GO MAMA - The third place finish in the last race was not that great. Tough to play this steed this time. Make her show you something in a short distance race before you bet on her in a race of 6 furlongs. If you keep betting these kind of 'hanger' types, you're going to be frustrated most of the time. EYESPYMYLITTLEEYE - Hard to invest in a runner that lays up for a long time then doesn't land in the money off the long layoff. Won't be easy for this entrant to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put her on the questionable challengers list.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 BAKFIRE BABY is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better
                        EXACTA WAGERS: None
