Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 2, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool begins in Race 5. The $2.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

4-Why Not Now (7/2)-The lightly raced 5-year-old has only 2 wins in 24 races since the start of 2024. The Alexander barn seems to be heating up and will look for a big effort tonight. Put in an even try last week but had missed a start and was slow off the gate. Should have a good chance to get a good early seat this week and be in striking range if Always a Thrill falters.
8-Always A Thrill (9/5)-Post 8 could be an issue but can’t say it will be. Has been in a zone, a cut above the rest and has won from out here before. Winner of 3 straight and 6 out of 7 at Yonkers this year is still the one to beat.

    Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Soho Firestone A (5/2)-Pulled away from age restricted Open Pacers and will need its best here but should be up to the challenge. Gets a new set of hands in George Brennan and he should be able to work a smooth trip.
3-American Dealer N (5-1)-Steps up off a nice try to come a close 2nd and had missed a start. Should fit with these and offer a square price.

    Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Mind Hunter (4-1)-Drops after being stuck with post 8 and 7 in the last 2 races. Should relish the company and can come with a big try leaving from the rail.
3-Hungry Angel Boy (2-1)-Put in a no-move mile from post 8 after shipping in from Saratoga. Lightly raced 5-year-old has had issues but recent form was good in the previous 3 starts. It's hard to figure this De Vita trainee who raced in the Borgata series in April. But this appears more like a spot where a picture could happen.

    Race 10 (9:45 PM EDT)

5-Maximus Red A (6-1)-Bumped up to this level last time and that was the 1st start for the Victoria Stratton barn. She has done well with this veteran in the past. Using at a solid price and expecting better in a race without a standout.
6-1-Draintheswamp A (4-1)-Was cashing checks against $40k claimers but hasn't taken a picture in a long time. Dropped to face $30K claimers in last and came 3rd to a couple of tough customers who are not in this field. Has hit the board in 4 of the last 5 starts and is not facing anyone tonight that has finished ahead.

    $2 Late Pick 4

    4,8/2,3/1,3/5,6
    Total Bet=$16

      #3
      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#3 Channel Me In She'll have to fire fresh today, but she's coming back in a spot with a couple potential stretchout players near the inside who will meet some confirmed route pace. Guessing the splits should be fair enough, and she seems like one of the more likely to run past horses late.
#5 Issa Vybe She has been a bit one-paced at best through two starts, but that may work well enough in a spot where a few of them figure to be stopping late. Tough to be enthusiastic here, but she fits.
#8 High Track Maybe she's best of the speed types with the outside draw to force the issue the whole way. Could see it, but the price may not be that exciting.
Race Summary Channel Me In might be able to get past some horses late here, and it feels like someone almost has to win this from off the pace.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#7 Cocktail Kisses Think she has a bit of midrange price appeal here with some fairly reliable form so far this year, and she should be in line for a great spying trip while watching everything unfold.
#1 Captain Courtney The talent is still here for her to land this at what is likely to be a short price after the good comeback run, and she presumably has some upside in the second start off the long break.
#3 Settling Storm Honest finisher rarely runs a bad one and seems to only have the question to answer about the new footing. One of the ones.
Race Summary Cocktail Kisses has really turned a corner this year, and she might be able to offer something better today than she did in her previous synthetic try.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#4 Joys of Summer She found her typical tactical spot and made a move before flattening out late in the comeback run, but she has some reasonable upside in the second start back. Tough if she sustains that run better today.
#7 Perfect Pink She has been in some spots that were generally tougher than this, and she handled the local footing nicely in that run last time out. In the mix.
#6 Momentous Miss She's got a class edge on this bunch with some decent runs here last season against better, but she went to the bench in mildly souring form and will need to bring something better fresh today.
Race Summary Joys of Summer may not offer all of that 12/1 ML price, but he's a good fit here after what looks like a useful tightener off the bench last out.

        #4
        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #1
#1 OKIE DEN DEN (4-1) A win and three seconds at this level since March 25, sheds 7 pounds.
#2 J D FACTOR (2-1) Dueled through fast fractions and just missed in first start for Ness.
#8 STARLORD (7-2) Ran 1-2-3 with Paco aboard, draws outside, rivals are combined 13-138.
Race Summary OKIE DEN DEN upstaged a string of runner-up finishes with a 7F victory at the same level last out. He pressed the pace and edged clear but rallied from farther off the pace in three prior starts. He gets in light-weighted and gets the call for a win and place bet. Also play 1,2 with 2,7 daily doubles.
        Parx - Race #2
#2 BOOK RUNNER (3-1) Won after voided vet claim, then chased winner and held third in follow-up.
#7 THIRSTY PAPPY (9-2) Faded from close-up for higher tag, stretches out, can rate.
#4 AULA (2-1) Plays to a steady beat in route races at Parx, won on fast and ‘good’ tracks this year.
Race Summary BOOK RUNNER steps up for a hot claim barn and tries to turn the tables from a recent long-distance matchup against speedy DR BAYTER. Believe he can do so at a distance which he earned more than half of his $112k dirt bankroll. Bet to win and place and play 2-4 and 2-7 exactas.
        Parx - Race #7
#6 GAMESTONKS (9-2) Classy 6-year-old back in good form cycle, gets in light-weighted.
#2 SISTER SUPREAM (3-1) Should face more pressure than in allowance win, romped in prior $16k try.
#3 PEACH PERFECT (5-1) Won 3 of last 5 starts going away in longer route race, value remains.
Race Summary GAMESTONKS rallied wide in the stretch and blew past next-out, wire-to-wire winner Photo Finish (5-17, $133k) in the final sixteenth to live up to odds-on favoritism. She sheds 5 pounds and is reunited with Martinez, who was aboard for one of Gamestonks’ seven victories on a fast track. Bet to win and place and play 6-2, 6-3 and 6-7 exactas.

Race 7 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $32600 Class Rating: 66

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 122 LBS.
              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 5 KING'S SPIRIT 5/2
              # 7 DESERT POWER 5/1
              # 6 DEPUTY TRAMON 12/1
KING'S SPIRIT is the top bet in this race. Exhibits the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 50 speed rating which is one of the top in this group. With Flores controlling the reins on him, this colt ought to be able to break out sharply in this competition. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group in his last affair. DESERT POWER - His 52 average has this gelding with among the best Equibase Speed Figures in this competition. Make a note that this one runs with second time Lasix today. DEPUTY TRAMON - Is a strong contender based on numbers recorded lately under today's conditions. This horse could shock this group at a solid price.

                Thistledown - Race #1 - Post: 12:50pm - SO - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,000 Class Rating: 91

                Rating:

                #3 DR JACK FLYER (ML=9/2)
                #5 PANTHERA'S FATE (ML=5/2)

DR JACK FLYER - Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. You always have to be on the lookout for revenue generating jockey/trainer combos; we have one right here. PANTHERA'S FATE - A gelding like this one, almost always on the board, usually makes an excellent trifecta key horse. Urieta brings him back again. I advocate you stick with this hot gelding.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SWEEPING GIANT (ML=8/5), #6 BIG POPPER (ML=7/2), #4 STAR SHOPPING (ML=8/1),

SWEEPING GIANT - Hasn't raced or had any morning drills since May 8th. Not much value on this morning-line favorite. BIG POPPER - A bit of a lackluster effort when this gelding finished fourth. This sustainer will probably be rallying much too late to make an impression in this affair. Improbable that the speed rating he earned on May 17th will be enough in this event. STAR SHOPPING - Speed figures of 86/66/57 are headed the wrong way.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #3 DR JACK FLYER to win if you can get odds of 2/1 or more

                  # 5 DARK TIMBER 7/2
I have to support DAZZLING TRUTHS here. I like the jock on this gelding - very good chance to win the race. Is a contender - given the 83 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race. He should be given a chance given the competitive speed figs. AL LOVES JOSIE - Should best this group here, showing very strong figures of late. Mendez will most likely be able to get this gelding to break out early for this event. DARK TIMBER - Looks strong against this group and ought to be one of the front-runners. Ought to be given consideration here if only for the solid speed figure posted in the last outing.

                    Prairie Meadows - Race #5 - Post: 5:48pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 56

                    Rating:

                    #4 BEAUTIFUL BREEZE (ML=5/1)
                    #1 SOPHIE'S GIRL (ML=4/1)

BEAUTIFUL BREEZE - Looking at today's class figure, this thoroughbred is meeting an easier bunch than in the last race at Turf Paradise. The improved Equibase speed figures over the last 3 races is solid. Kenney drops her in this contest fit and ready to go. SOPHIE'S GIRL - Look at this pattern of improvement. 37/40/46 are the last three Equibase speed figs.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ESCAPE MAP (ML=3/1), #2 RANCH REBEL (ML=7/2), #7 MISS MARY (ML=9/2),

ESCAPE MAP - Hasn't been on the Prairie Meadows oval in the last three weeks. Cause for some concern. RANCH REBEL - This filly hasn't had any strong efforts in sprint affairs in the last sixty days. This questionable contender hasn't been coming close at the finish recently. Finished seventh in her most recent race with a common speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. MISS MARY - I'd like to see better recent efforts with morning line odds of 9/2. Today's event is 6 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a short distance race in the last couple of months.
